2 CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX FEBRUARY 10, 2013 FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Can you remember a time when you were touchy and perhaps even difficult to live with a few years ago? Look at that area of your life today. Has anything changed? Is the condition at all improved? Did you perhaps resent an injury done to you in the past? Are you still harboring that same old grudge today? A dozen years ago did you have a bad temper that inflicted unhappiness to family and/or friends? How about now. Is that temper under any better control today? The sad thing is that we can tolerate conditions like that year after year. These are some of the chronic sicknesses of the human soul. Our Catholic discipleship is not a static condition. It is rather a living relationship. And like all relationships it is either growing or it is dying. It is either expanding or shrinking. No one of us remains at the same level of childishness throughout all his or her adult years. One either changes the direction of his or her life and grows up and becomes a mature adult, or else he or she regresses further and further into childishness. A selfish person does not stop and stay on the same plateau of self-seeking. He or she either opens their mind to the truth that there are bigger and more important things in this world than one s own needs and wants, or else that person becomes more and more self-centered with the passing of time. Whatever else our Christian faith is, it is not sitting down with folded hands and waiting for laziness. It is not sitting down with folded hands and waiting for God to solve our problems and shape up our lives. The only kind of faith that makes any real difference in our personal lives is the kind that we act upon. As we are about to enter into the holy season of Lent take a look at your own life today. Has your Catholic faith made any real difference in your life? Are you spiritually, morally, and emotionally stronger and healthier than you were even a year ago? If not, why not! Jesus is not going to mold and strengthen our lives by some kind of magic. We become better in the fine act of living in much the same way we become better at anything. For example, how does one become better in baseball? One works at it. Much practice makes for a better player! So how does one build a Christ-like life? One works at it. But we are not left to our own devices. We have the presence and help of the Master, Jesus Himself. But we need to do the work. In this Lenten season we are encouraged to practice our faith. The next time someone happens to irritate you, instead of blowing your stack like you may have in the past, try being more Christ-like. Exercise some patience. Your patience muscles are probably flabby and soft from lack of practice. Being Christ-like takes work and practice. The point is the only faith that works is the faith that we work at. God is not going to do for us what we could and should do for ourselves. So do you really and truly want to change for the better? Are you serious about being more Christ-like? Just reach out and ask Jesus for help. Through the sacraments, through prayer, through bible sharing you can truly become more Christ-like. Jesus can and wants to heal our chronic sicknesses of our soul by showing us how it is done. He is waiting for you to approach Him. He wants to show you the way. Lent is here. Let Him show the way to you. ST. THERESA S CARD PARTY MAY 23, 2013 AT THE VILLA BARON MANOR GOING BACK TO THE 80 S The Card Party committee is in the process of getting the Card Party under way for May and as they have done in the past years, they are asking for donations. Almost everyone receives something for Christmas that they don t want or can t use it s inevitable. We would be happy to take them off your hands. We can use anything that is NEW OR UNUSED such as picture frames, candle sets, wallets, etc. Thank you for your consideration and all you do to help make the card party a success! Please remember only NEW UNUSED AND UNOPENED ITEMS will be accepted. Please bring your donations to the Rectory. There will be more information to follow. ST. THERESA FEAST COMMITTEE The feast committee will be holding its Annual Fat Tuesday meeting on Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at 7:30PM in the rectory meeting room. All committee members are asked to attend. As always these meetings are open to all parishioners and local residents. Feel free to join us if you d like to see how this committee works, bring up any ideas or just get involved. We are always looking for new suggestions and good help. HOLY NAME SOCIETY The Holy Name Society is having their monthly meeting on Thursday, February 14 th at 8:00PM in the large Rectory meeting room. Refreshments will be served. Please attend this meeting and new members are always welcome.

3 FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME IRISH FOOTBALL (GAELIC FOOTBALL) Try-Outs for Irish Football will be held on Saturday, February 9 th from 11:00AM to 2:00PM in St. Theresa s school gym plus practices will be on February 16, 23 and March 2 from 8:00AM-10:00AM. JOSEPH S SEMINARY HOLY HOUR FOR VOCATIONS The office of Vocations will be HOSTING A Holy Hour for Vocations on Thursday, February 28, 2013 at 7:00PM at St. Joseph s Seminary. This event is open to all and we will be joined by diocesan seminarians and CFRs. To help in planning, please RSVP. Light refreshments to follow. For more information please call the Office of Vocations at St. Joseph s Seminary at Wednesday, February 13, 2013 is Ash Wednesday. It is a day of strict fast and abstinence. Ashes will be distributed after each of the morning masses 8:00AM and 9:00AM and in the afternoon at a 3:00PM service and after the 7:30PM Mass. THERE WILL BE NO HOLY HOUR ON ASH WEDNESDAY. ACTIVE PARISHIONER STATUS We receive many requests for parishioners to be Godparents or sponsors for the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation and to rightfully enjoy the number of services offered at St. Theresa Church. Part of the request is to be able to verify that a person is an active parishioner of St. Theresa s. An active parishioner is: properly registered in the parish, faithfully attends Mass on Sundays and Holy Days, participates in parish activities and ministries when possible and Uses the parish envelope system for donations. These are the main factors that will be considered in making the determination MASS BOOK The mass book for 2014 will open on Wednesday, February 20 th..we will begin at 10:00AM in the large Rectory meeting room. Please use the outside staircase leading down to the meeting room. The cost of a mass intention is: $15.00 for a weekday mass, $25.00 for Saturday evenings, Sundays & Holy Days, because of the limited amount of masses available each person may have only THREE intentions. Please No Exceptions. Only those who come in person may book Masses. If you cannot attend at this time you may mail your requests to the Rectory with your choice of dates and times. Be sure to include your home phone number. ST. THERESA CABARET The St. Theresa Cabaret will be on April 6 in the school auditorium. If you would like to join the fun and sing with us, please stop by the school cafeteria on February 12 for auditions. The auditions will be held from 7:00PM-8:30PM. You must be 21 and over to audition. Every Friday during Lent we will be having the Stations of the Cross at 7:30PM. PLEASE SAVE THE DATE ST. THERESA ALUMNI REUNION APRIL 27 TH Searching for alumni! We are always looking for New Members. If you are interested please come to our meeting. A Valentine's Day Blessing Love, the Bible says, is patient. May you never lose your temper with the one you love, but be patient as God was with his people. Love, the Bible says, is never boastful. May you cherish your love as a masterpiece of God, and not as a trophy to be displayed. Love, the Bible says, is never selfish. May you always be generous to your love, with time, with affection, with encouragement and assistance. For as Christ loved the Church, so we should love our beloved. As Mary was devoted to her Son, so we should be devoted to those we love. And as God loved and sacrificed for the world, so may we always be to those we love.
