2 C S. T, B FROM THE DESK OF FATHER DERIVAN: PARISH FINANCIAL REPORT Last week I presented the Pastoral Report for our parish. The Pastoral Report is the report sent to the Cardinal s Office every year by the pastor of every church. It is called, in Latin, status animarum, which means the state of souls. Obviously that refers to the spiritual aspects of the parish which are always most important. We are not a business. We are not even just another nonprofit organization. We are the Church and we exist for the sacraments and the spiritual welfare of our people, particularly our children. I hope you read last week s Pastoral Report. I was proud to send it on you behalf to the Cardinal and proud to present it to you. Likewise today I am proud to present to you the Financial Report for our parish, likewise sent to the Cardinal s Office. Our fiscal years runs from September 1, 2015 through August 31, I think it is important for you to see how your support is helping our parish to fulfill our mission to be God s family of faith in our community. Without your generous help, nothing that we do would be possible. You deserve a great deal of credit for your support of our church. It shows your love for the Lord Himself and your love for the Catholic Church. As you can see, we depend very much on your Sunday contributions which amount to over 50% of our annual income. Thank you for your faithful use of the Sunday envelopes. I am particularly edified when older parishioners (and some younger ones) come into the rectory with their church envelopes because they were away on vacation or even homebound or in the hospital. What a beautiful testimony of love for St. Theresa Church! One item which I wish to encourage this year is the expansion our Alumni Association. We want to reach out to alumni and former parishioners (even if they did not attend our school) to keep them informed about our parish and to invite them to help us with their support. Please encourage alumni and former parishioners to update their information. Information about this is found below. Let me thank you once again for your faithful help. Father Grippo always told me about the generosity and faithfulness of St. Theresa s parishioners. I shall tell him how right he is. Father Thomas B. Derivan ST. SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SCHOOL SPONSORSHIPS We are making this appeal to parishioners (past and present), alumni and friends of St. Theresa s Parish. We have a School Sponsorship Program in our school. In this, the sponsor offers to help pay a needy student s tuition in whole or in part. Students are selected by the pastor and the principal particularly because of some unforeseen circumstance that has happened to the family where the child would otherwise not be able to continue in our school. The sponsorship makes it possible for a child to continue to benefit from a good Catholic education at St. Theresa s School. We ask you to consider becoming a School Sponsor. Full Sponsorship is $5,200 and partial is $2,600. If you are interested, please contact our principal Mrs. Fanelli at or Father Derivan at or drop into our School Office. Your sponsorship makes a difference in a child s life. We were also able to give away over 400 pieces of clothing to individuals living in homeless shelters. Hope for Us would like to thank everyone at St. Theresa s Church who made this possible. It is greatly appreciated. Also pictures of Hope for Us 2nd Annual Toy Giveaway are available on our website: trusthope.org. Wishing you all the best and a Happy New year. From Our Children: To the wonderful people at St. Theresa Church and School: You did it again! Your beautiful gifts were welcomed and appreciated by all in our Christmas celebrations because they represented the heartfelt giving of so many. The gifts were used for needy families, for children who visited mothers at Taconic and Bedford Hills state prisons, and for children who attended our festive Christmas party. You have helped us express the deeper meaning of Christmas for our families. Know how grateful we are!

4 JANUARY 15, 2017 A MESSAGE FOR PARENTS ABOUT SOCIAL MEDIA: Dear Parents: As we begin a new year, I thought it would be good to share with parents some thoughts about being alert to problems that may be affecting our children through the use of Internet, text messaging, social media, etc. We live in an instant communications age. That is both good and bad. Obviously parents want to be able to contact their children, especially in case of emergency. But the bad side features the many dangers that our children are now exposed to. Among these dangers are the following (which I have seen myself): * Some youngsters foolishly put information on social media sites, including personal informationeven cellphone numberswhich is accessible to predators. Obviously parents have a rightand a dutyto monitor their children s use of social media. Better to be safe then sorry! * Home computers should be in family space, not secluded in the child s bedroom. You should be able to see what your child is seeing on the Internet. * Some children are using phones and social media too often and too late, even well past bedtime. Parents should set rules on this and also on the amount of time allowed for video games. * Parents should be alert to the improper use of text messages. Some messages are simply crude, unacceptable, and often morally offensive. You should look at the messages on your child s phone. If he or she has a problem with this, probably there is a problem with the messages. Much of this text messaging can create many problems now and in years to come (when these messages can come back to haunt them). The danger here is immense and can lead to serious legal problems, as well as personal danger. * Parents should insist that the cell phone is not an entertainment instrument, but an instrument of communication when necessary. It is advisable to you to have a cellphone with limited numbers availablejust parents and emergency contacts. Why are children calling one another, sometimes for hours at a time, when they have just seen one another school? They need your direction on what the cellphone is for. * Some children are foolish in giving out their cellphone numbers to others indiscriminately. The parent should know who has the child s number. You should check the phone regularly. * Many children are simply careless in handling their cellphones and other devices. Parents spend hundreds of dollars on these items, only to have the child misplace them. The child should be trained in the proper care of cellphones and other devices. In our school these items are checked upon the child s arrival in school. Both children and parents must be alert to potential problems in the use of technology. It is one of the most serious issues facing families today. And correspondingly children must learn that their parents concern about this is for their own good. Good communication between parent and child is the key. Our late Cardinal Egan used to say that there are three words that adults must keep in mind in raising children Alert, alert, alert. May the Lord give you the wisdom you need always to be an alert parent. Sincerely in Our Lord, Father Thomas B. Derivan JANUARY 20 ST. FABIAN POPE AND MARTYR (C.250) Fabian was a Roman layman who came into the city from his farm one day as clergy and people were preparing to elect a new pope. Eusebius, a church historian, says a dove flew in and settled on the head of Fabian. This sign united the votes of clergy and laity, and he was chosen unanimously. He led the church for fourteen years and died a martyr s death during the persecution of Decius in AD 250. Saint Cyprian wrote to his successor that Fabian was an incomparable man whose glory in death matched the holiness and purity of his life. In the catacombs of Saint Callistus, the stone that covered Fabian s grave may still be seen, broken into four pieces, bearing the Greek words, Fabian, bishop, Martyr. We can go confidently into the future and accept the change that growth demands only if we have firm roots in the past, in a living tradition. A few pieces of stone in Rome are a reminder to us that we are bearers of more than twenty centuries of a living tradition of faith and courage in living the life of Christ and showing it to the world. We have brothers and sisters who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith, as the First Eucharist Prayer puts it, to light the way for us.

5 PRAYER FOR OUR COUNTRY As we prepare for the Inauguration of our new President this week, let us offer this prayer which is based on the prayer of our country s first bishop, Archbishop John Carroll, written in 1791: We pray, thee O Almighty and Eternal God! Who through Jesus Christ hast revealed Thy glory to all nations, to preserve the works of Thy mercy, that Thy Church, being spread through the whole world, may continue with unchanging faith in the confession of Thy Name. We pray Thee O God of might, wisdom, and justice, through whom authority is rightly administered, laws are enacted, and judgment decreed, assist with Thy Holy Spirit of counsel and fortitude the president of these United States, that his administration may be conducted in righteousness, and be eminently useful to Thy people over whom he presides; by encouraging due respect for virtue and religion; by a faithful execution of the laws in justice and mercy; and by restraining vice and immorality. Let the light of Thy divine wisdom direct the deliberations of Congress, and shine forth in all the proceedings and laws framed for our rule and government, so that they may tend to the preservation of peace, the promotion of national happiness, the increase of industry, sobriety, and useful knowledge; and may perpetuate to us the blessing of equal liberty. We pray for the governor of this state, for the members of the assembly, for all judges, magistrates, and other officers who are appointed to guard our political welfare, that they may be enabled, by Thy powerful protection, to discharge the duties of their respective stations with honesty and ability. We recommend likewise, to Thy unbounded mercy, all our brethren and fellow citizens throughout the United States, that they may be blessed in the knowledge and sanctified in the observance of Thy most holy law; that they may be preserved in union, and in that peace which the world cannot give; and after enjoying the blessings of this life, be admitted to those which are eternal. Finally, we pray to Thee, O Lord of mercy, to remember the souls of Thy servants departed who are gone before us with the sign of faith and repose in the sleep of peace; the souls of our parents relatives, and friends;, of those who, when living, were members of this congregation, and particularly of such as are lately deceased. To these, O Lord, and to all that rest in Christ, grant, we beseech Thee, a place of refreshment, light, and everlasting peace, through the same Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Savior. Amen ORDINARY TIME OF THE CHURCH YEAR: Today we begin the Ordinary Time of the Church s Liturgical Year, a time which extends from now until Lent and then resumes after Pentecost until the end of the Church Year on the Feast of Christ the King. Why Is Ordinary Time Called Ordinary? Ordinary Time is called ordinary not because it is common but simply because the weeks of Ordinary Time are numbered. The Latin word ordinalis, which refers to numbers in a series, stems from the Latin word ordo, from which we get the English word order. Thus, the numbered weeks of Ordinary time in fact represent the ordered life of the Churchthe period in which we live our lives neither in feasting (as in the Christmas and Easter seasons) or in more severe penance (as in Advent and Lent), but in watchfulness and expectation of the Second Coming of Christ. It s appropriate, therefore, that the Gospel for the Second Sunday of Ordinary Time (which is actually the first Sunday celebrated in Ordinary Time) always features either John the Baptist s acknowledgment of Christ as the Lamb of God or Christ s first miraclethe transformation of water into wine at the wedding at Cana. Thus for Catholics, Ordinary Time is the part of the year in which Christ, the Lamb of God, walks among us and transforms our lives. There s nothing ordinary about that! WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHURCH UNITY The annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity begins Wednesday, January 18, and concludes Wednesday, January 25. The Week of Prayer (formerly called the Church Unity Octave) was begun by the Graymoor Fathers to encourage Christian Churches to emphasize their unity in Christ. The theme of the Week of Prayer this year is: Reconciliation The Love of Christ Compels Us (2 Corinthians 5:1420). Please make it your special intention in your prayers this week that Christian ChurchesCatholic, Protestant, Episcopalian and Orthodox may work towards reconciliation so that, in Jesus words, all may be one, as you Father are in me and I in you (Jn 17:21). Prayer For the Christian Unity Eternal Father, we praise you for sending your Son to be one of us and to save us. Look upon your people with mercy, For we are divided in so many ways, And give us the Spirit of Jesus to make us one in love. We ask this gift, loving Father, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. HOLIDAY: This Monday we observe the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We celebrate Dr. King s commitment to the advancement of human rights and dignity and his commitment to nonviolence. How much we need to remember the legacy of Dr. King who prayed that his children would be judged not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. We as Catholics must continually be reminded of our commitment to racial harmony and mutual respect. Likewise we must remember Dr. King s legacy of nonviolence. Even though crime statistics have gone down in our city, we are well aware of crime stalking our own neighborhood where the elderly are particularly vulnerable. Pray that violence will be overcome by human respect. Pray that even those who turn to violence will have a change of heart and a change of their violent ways. May the example of Dr. King help us all to live in respect for one another as God s children.
