3 VICTIM ASSISTANCE Liturgy of the Word Jesus heart was moved with pity (Mark 6:34). The Greek word Mark uses, esplagchnisthe, is formed from the word splagchna, which is the word used to refer to the inner organs of the body. So this pity is literally a visceral form of compassion. Imagine, if you will, the feeling you get in your gut when you see or hear something especially moving. This is what drove Jesus to drop everything and attend to the crowds of followers. What moves you to feel a visceral form of compassion toward others? What then do you do? SAVE THE DATE MONDAY September 17, 2018 Why Do We Baptize Babies? Baptism is the gateway to life in the Spirit, the Church, and the other Sacraments. It makes sense that it be conveyed as early as possible. While a child obviously cannot consciously choose Baptism, parents can choose for the baby. In so doing, they accept the priceless gift of becoming a child of God. Truly, truly I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God (John 3:5). Thank you! R.C.I.A. PROGRAMS ST. JOSEPH S, NEW PALTZ RCIA for children ages 8-12 is a 3 year program for children who have not received their sacraments at the usual time and for teenagers years old. Classes are held on Monday evenings from 6:30 8:00 p.m. in the church hall. 5 St. Joseph s Parish Celebrates 150 th Anniversary November 17, 2018 Mass at 5:00 p.m. Timothy Cardinal Dolan, Celebrant The formal beginning of our Parish began with the arrival of Reverend James Dougherty, the first pastor. Just as the history of Kingston is a story of struggle of the people who made up the community, the history of St. Joseph s is also one of struggle. There was opposition from the very beginning within the Kingston community. Father Dougherty s records indicate that the first collection received support from Catholics as well as Protestants and Jews. $1,310 was donated by Protestants and Jews making the total collection $4,175! The second collection netted $8, for completion of the church and again many contributions were from people of other faiths. Many of us today think of ecumenical cooperation as a result of Vatican II and are surprised to learn that it did exist prior to that conference. It was simply community spirit in a free society.
