THERESA, BRONX DECEMBER 2, 2012 FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT As we begin this holy season of Advent can you remember as a child the anticipation you felt as you sensed Christmas approaching. It was indeed such an exciting time of year. For some reason, adults seemed to be a little happier and less fussier than usual. Music filled the air; packages were made ready to be placed under the tree; secrets were being whispered from person to person at home and on the phone. Sometimes the excitement would build until you would think you were going to burst. Perhaps as adults we have since discarded that kind of anticipation as just a childish fantasy. But I hope not, because this sense of anticipation during this holy season isn t altogether without scriptural precedent. For example, there is recorded in the New Testament of a meeting between the Virgin Mary and her cousin Elizabeth. Mary had traveled from her home in Nazareth into the hill country of Judea to visit Elizabeth. Both women were pregnant. Elizabeth was to give birth to John the Baptist; and Mary, of course would become the mother of our Lord. The house where they met was absolutely alive with excitement. To put it into human terms, those two women were looking forward to Christmas and sensed the joy of the presence of the Lord in their midst. A lot of Christmases have come and gone since Jesus was born in Bethlehem. We live in a world where there is too much sadness and a critical shortage of hope and joy. Look around! You can see it everywhere. How many people in this city or nation or for that matter, in this world do you know whom you can say are genuinely happy? Or what percentage of your day is characterized by a genuine sense of joy? An honest answer to either of these questions would probably reveal how badly we need the Christmas message. It is a season when, at least for a little while, we are confronted and challenged by the concept of God. All around us we see that the decorations are bright and beautiful. The music is happy. Smiles seem to come a little easier and stay a little longer. All of which reminds us God is here! This, of course, is not to say that all of our problems are solved or forgotten. They are not. They are very real, and we know it. But so did Mary and Elizabeth. All of their heartaches were not behind them. Elizabeth s child would eventually have his head cut off and served on a silver platter to a decadent and drunken crowd. Mary s child would live only 33 years and then be nailed to a cross. Those two women still had to deal with real problems. Their hearts would literally break within them. But they both had a great faith and trust in a God who loved them and would be with them all through their lives even in the moments of great worry and sorrow. Yet they looked forward to that first Christmas that would bring the Lord of All to be born among us and be present to us and remain with us forever. They were able to understand that God is bigger than all of their problems and that He would be there for them in all moments of life. So you have heavy burdens that you are carrying this Christmas time? But realistically that is not all of it. You also have lots of good things lots of blessings! I hope that during this holy season of Advent 2012 we could let the good loom larger than the bad. Know the message of this season God is with you. Understand that Jesus is at work in your life, and in this world, and He is bigger than all of our difficulties and problems. We need to catch enough of the spirit of Christmas joy that will refresh us and carry us into the coming year. That s a very real possibility that I hope becomes true reality in your life. This Christmas let us remember and celebrate the reality that God is indeed with us. Fear not! ST. THERESA CHOIR NEWS There will be a Memorial Mass on Monday, December 3 rd at 7:30PM for deceased choir members of the St. Theresa and St. Frances de Chantal choirs. We will be remembering Anne Leicht, Terry DePasquale and Rose Scott from the St. Theresa Choir and Christine Connelly and Evelyn Cocharelli from the St. Frances de Chantal choir. All are welcome. ST. THERESA ALTAR SOCIETY The Altar Society will be meeting on Wednesday, December 12 th at 7:30PM in the large Rectory meeting room. ST. THERESA S GIVING TREE The Giving Tree is our parish opportunity for sharing. The tree will be located at the Altar of St. Joseph. The tree will have tags hanging on it. These gifts are collected for the needy. We ask you to remove a gift tag, purchase the item (new items only) and return it UNWRAPPED with the gift tag on it and place it under the tree. All gifts should be in by December 16 th... THE HOLY NAME SOCIETY The Holy Name Society will be meeting on Thursday, December 13th at 8:00PM in the Small Rectory Meeting Room. Refreshments will be served.

3 FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT A LETTER FROM THE ARCHDIOCESE Local Boards for the three pilot regions and the ad hoc Reconfiguration Committees for the six non-pilot regions, comprised of laity and clergy in parishes across the Archdiocese of New York, have completed their evaluations of the current status and long-term viability of the regionalized elementary schools in the respective regions. The review included all relevant data, including enrollment, financial, academic and local demographics, and ensured their decisions will result in financially healthy schools. The long-term goal of regionalization is to maintain sustainable, excellent local school options for families wishing a Catholic education. The emphasis placed on this local decision-making process was outlined in Pathways to Excellence, the strategic plan for Catholic schools published in October 2012 and developed to assure a vibrant future for Catholic education. Under that plan, most parish elementary schools will align into geographic regions governed by Boards. As a result of this local evaluation, 26 elementary schools were identified as at-risk of closing in June Given the catastrophic effects of Hurricane Sandy on Staten Island, consultations with the Staten Island Board are continuing and no announcement about Catholic schools on Staten Island will be made until after the New Year. In addition to the elementary schools, the Office of the Superintendent of Schools, after consultation with school leadership, has determined that St. Agnes Boys High School in Manhattan is also at-risk of closure in June In the next step of this process, pastors and principals of the at-risk elementary schools will be invited to meet with members of the local Board of Reconfiguration committee in their region to discuss the combination factors that led the school to be selected and review next steps. Final decisions by the local Boards and Reconfiguration Committees will be made in January 2013, in consultation with the Archdiocese of New York. Our region consists of the East and Northeast Bronx. In our region there are 22 Catholic elementary schools. Five of these 22 elementary schools have opted out of the region. St. Theresa is one of those five schools that will remain parish based. Unfortunately four Catholic elementary schools in our region are marked at risk. However every parish in each region will be taxed to help support the remaining regional Catholic schools. We will keep you informed as the process unfolds, and additional information is available on ST. THERESA CHURCH SENIOR CITIZEN FELLOWSHIP GROUP St. Theresa Church Senior Citizen Fellowship Group is sponsoring a SKIN CANCER SCREENING on December 8, 2012 from 12:30PM to 2:30PM. It will take place in the St. Theresa Rectory Meeting Room. The cost is FREE. This courtesy is being offered by Dr. Eugene J. Whang, M.D., Board Certified Dermatologist with an office located in the Bronx. If interested please contact the Rectory at to register. Registration is preferred but not necessary. OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE Come celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Saturday, December 8 th at 6:30PM, with Mass in Spanish and Mariachi music. After the Mass we will continue our celebration with delicious food, and music in the gym. On Wednesday, December 12 th at 5:30AM we will sing Las Mañanitas a Mexican tradition of singing birthday songs to O.L. of Guadalupe. A traditional Mexican breakfast will be served after the Mañanitas in the large rectory meeting room. ZUMBA Zumba has been cancelled for the month of December. Sorry for the inconvenience we will keep you informed when Zumba will begin again in January. CONFESSIONS are heard every Saturday from 4:00PM- 5:00PM or by appointment in the Rectory. ST. THERESA SCHOOL S ONGOING EFFORT TO HELP OUR TROOPS St. Theresa School has been collecting items for our troops stationed in Afghanistan. Mrs. Fitzgerald our 6 th grade teacher is the moderator of this effort, she has a personal interest since her son Christopher is stationed there. The families have donated items such as candy, DVD movies/music, blankets, gloves, hats, underwear, instant soup, coffee, and snacks for the troops to enjoy! We are reaching out to you the kind parishioners of St. Theresa parish to help us in our effort. You can donate items, but if going to the store is difficult we can use monetary donations to mail the packages, it cost $12.90 to mail each box. You can place your donation in an envelope and label it For the Troops and place it in the collection basket on Sunday. You are always welcome to drop by the school and bring your donations. Thank you for always supporting the school in its efforts to teach the children about kindness, and caring for others. St. Theresa School is still collecting empty ink cartridges, and old cell phones for recycling. Please drop them off at the school or rectory, also we are collecting box tops not only can you cut out box tops for us, but if you shop on line go to and a percentage of what you spend on line will benefit St. Theresa School.
