2 CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX JANUARY 6, 2013 THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD Commonly people think of Jesus as one who brings peace to individual lives and unity to human relationship. Many a troubled spirit has found serenity through faith in Jesus, and many a broken relationship has been healed by His presence. These are truths to which some who read this article could testify to and for which all can be glad. However there is another side to the story, which must also be told. Jesus is not all sweetness and charm as it were. His impact on our human life can be, and often is, deeply disturbing and sharply divisive. We misunderstand both Jesus and His message if we see Him as one who walks the world and into lives always soothing troubled waters. If we take a closer look at the gospels we will discover that Jesus seldom if ever touched the life of any person without bringing disruption and change into that life. Zaccheus was a tax collector in Jericho, one of the most prosperous men in town. He was set for life and apparently content with his ill-gotten wealth, up until he met Jesus. Then things began to change. Convicted in conscience of wrongdoing, he could no longer live in comfort while others lived in want. Half of everything he owned would go to the poor. The other half would be used to settle some old accounts. He would search out the people he had cheated and repay them with interest. One encounter with Jesus brought that kind of disruption into his old way of life and a great change into the life of Zaccheus from then on. But there are many other examples of this. Jesus never got a hold on any person without disturbing, disrupting, and rearranging that person s life. This truth needs to take hold of some of us today. Whenever Christianity becomes only sweetness and soothing and nothing else, then it has drifted a long way from Jesus Himself. For Jesus was and continues to be the most disturbing and demanding figure that ever walked across the stage of our human experience. Try to imagine Jesus walking among us today in 2013 in your home, in your school, in your workplace. I have little doubt that to some deeply troubled soul, He would whisper peace. But to many others who are at ease with the status quo or who are unwilling to let go of the old way of life, the old habits and friends that will not allow us to change or move on with our life, He would make us uneasy and restless. Jesus wanted and continues to want it clearly understood that following Him was not, and is not, and never could be a matter of comfort and convenience. Jesus said, Anyone who does not take up his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. The cross which is the sign of our faith has never been and can never be a symbol of ease and convenience. We need a faith that will challenge the very best within us, and we have such a faith in Jesus who will continue to disturb and disrupt our lives so that each and every one of us can change for the better and be the very best person possible. Please allow Jesus to do that for you! ST. THERESA S HOME SCHOOL ASSOCIATION BINGO St. Theresa s Home School Association will be having Bingo on Friday, January 11, 2013 in the school cafeteria. The doors will open at 7:00PM. This Bingo is for ADULTS ONLY. Please bring a few friends and have some fun and with a little luck you could be a winner. Please continue to share the peace and joy of our faith with others. There are so many out there that are in the need of Jesus. Can you be for all of us a living sign to all our parishioners and neighbors, and tell them for us we need them and love them. Someone may hear and accept the invitation from you and return home to worship the Lord with us. So please invite a friend, relative, or neighbor to come with you to Church next Sunday. God will do the rest. Let us share our treasure of faith with others. Fr. Grippo and the Rectory staff would like to thank all who sent cards or gifts and good wishes during this holiday season. We would also like to send a big thank you to all those who have done a beautiful job in decorating the Church during Advent and Christmas and also a warm word of thanks to Gino Segreti, and Sonny and all members of the Altar Society for making our church look so wonderful. Also the Altar and Holy Name Societies would like to thank all who donated to the Giving Tree and the Coat Drive. Your generosity has made so many people have a Merry Christmas this year. May god bless you for all you do for our parish and community EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Eucharistic Adoration takes place every Wednesday afternoon from 4:30 to 5:30PM and on First Friday from 7:30 to 10PM. As we try to reach each and every volunteer by letter it is not always possible. If you have volunteered in any capacity during the year, whether it be the Feast, Sports, Scouts, Ushers, Food Pantry or any of the ministries and did not receive a letter please come join us as we gather to celebrate our parish community. Gratefully, Tony Felicissimo President ACTIVE PARISHIONER STATUS We receive many requests for parishioners to be Godparents or sponsors for the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation and to rightfully enjoy the number of services offered at St. Theresa church. Part of the request is to be able to verify that a person is an active parishioner of St. Theresa s. An Active Parishioner is: Properly registered in the Parish Faithfully attends Mass on Sundays and Holy Days Participates in parish activities/ministries when possible Uses the parish envelope system for donations These are the main factors that will be considered in making the determination. REMINDER TO ALTAR SERVERS Please be sure to check your schedules each week for the Mass you are assigned to serve. If you cannot serve the Mass you have been assigned please make sure you find a replacement. When you are at Mass on Saturday or Sunday please check in the sacristy to see if we need your help serving Mass.
