2 CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX MARCH 2, 2014 EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Every one of us who happens to have the responsibility knows that there are two ways to clean house. One is routine and regular; the other is major and seldom. In the first you sweep the floors, vacuum the carpets, wash the dishes, make the beds, secure the bathrooms, and dust the furniture. The second way includes all of the above but goes a bit further. You also move the furniture in order to get at the dirt that has accumulated under and behind. You clean out the refrigerator and throw away all of the moldy food. You rearrange the pantry and put new paper on the shelves. You straighten the closets and give away or put away the old and out of season clothes. Then, as time permits, you go to the attic or basement and dispose of all the needless junk that has collected there across the months. In most parts of the country this latter procedure is called Spring cleaning. When Winter is over and the warm weather arrives, you open the doors and windows, let in the fresh air and get your house extra clean. With the passing of time excess baggage, useless junk, and plain dirt tend to accumulate in out of the way places. If you need any proof of that go look in your hall closet. Most hall closets are alike. There was a day when they were neat, clean and not overcrowded. Then the process began. First, it was some extra coat hangers. Then some clothes that were too tight, but you were sure you would lose enough weight to wear them next season. Next, a couple of gift boxes that you didn t need right then but would sometime soon. Then there were a few pairs of shoes that you planned to give to St. Vincent De Paul Society, as soon as you got together enough things to make it worth the trip. On and on it goes; here a little, there a little; nothing big or dramatic. You never made a clear cut decision to turn your hall closet into a junkyard; nevertheless, it happened. Now you re almost afraid to open the door, lest you get buried in an avalanche of the trash and treasure that have collected. Well, it isn t too difficult to see a likeness between our lives and that hall closet. Both of them tend to get cluttered in ways that we never planned nor deliberately pursued. How many of us today are leading overcrowded lives and wondered when and how it happened? Do you have time to play with your children; to talk with your spouse; to enjoy your friends? How about prayer, mass, sacraments, meditation? Whatever happened to that time? There was a time when you found or made room to talk with God and think about your life. There was a time when you made more time for the children, your spouse and your friends. Now something else has filled that space. What is it, and is it more important than the things that used to be there? Honest answers to questions such as these would probably tell us that we are in need of a spiritual Spring cleaning. Every life has only so much space and so many hours. If we let nature take its course, then the bad could crowd out the good or the good will crowd out the bad. At some point perhaps Lent is such a point - we can take charge of our own lives, decide what is really important, hold on to what is good, and throw the rest away. MASS BOOK 2015 MASS BOOK FOR 2015 The mass book for 2015 is open. Please come to the Rectory from the hours of 9:00AM to 5:00PM. The cost of a mass intention is: $15.00 for a weekday mass, $25.00 for Saturday evenings, Sundays & Holy Days, because of the limited amount of Masses available each person may have only THREE intentions. Please NO exceptions. If you cannot come in person, you can mail your requests to the Rectory with your choice of dates and times. Be sure to include your phone number. CONFESSIONS are heard every Saturday from 4:00PM-5:00PM or by appointment in the Rectory. This Wednesday, March 5th is Ash Wednesday. It is a day of strict fast and abstinence. Ashes will be distributed after each of the morning 8:00AM &9:00AM Masses, in the afternoon at a 3:00PM service and after the 7:30PM Mass. THERE WILL BE NO HOLY HOUR THIS WEDNESDAY BECAUSE IT IS ASH WEDNESDAY.

3 EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME THE ALTAR SOCIETY LENTEN MISSION Just a reminder the Altar Society will sponsor a Lenten Mission on Monday, March 10th, Tuesday, March 11th and Wednesday, March 12th. The Lenten Mission will include Adoration, an explanation of how the Ten Commandments transition into our everyday life. And there will be a question and answer session. More information will follow in the coming weeks. Get Rid of The Cabin Fever! The Feast Committee will be holding its next meeting on Tuesday March 4th at 7:30PM in the Rectory meeting room. Come and enjoy some of the Fat Tuesday desserts & goodies, see how plans are coming along for our July event, and get involved. Remember, Feast committee meetings are open to all members of our Parish & community. ST. ANTHONY NOVENA The St. Anthony Novena begins on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at 7:00PM. Come join the other devotees for the 13 week Novena as they petition, praise and thank God for all the blessings received through the intercession of St. Anthony. A MEMORIAL MASS IN MEMORY OF MRS. MARY EVELYN OTTERSTEDT MARCH 8, 2014 As many of you know on February 8th Sr. Martha s mom passed away. Many of Sr. Martha s friends at St. Theresa were unable to be with her during the wake and funeral. Therefore a memorial mass will be offered here at St. Theresa on Saturday, March 8, at 11:00AM. All are most welcome. We are accepting donations for the Sisters of the Presentation in memory of Sr. Martha s mom. Please bring your donation to the Rectory office. LENTEN REGULATIONS 2014 ASH WEDNESDAY & GOOD FRIDAY are days of FAST AND ABSTINENCE All other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence FASTING: Fasting is the act of doing with less. In the Catholic Church, those ages must fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. On such days, those fasting may eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength. However, together, the smaller meals should not equal a full meal. Eating between meals is not encouraged, but liquids are allowed. It is important to understand that the Church excuses certain people from these obligations such as the elderly and the sick. ABSTINENCE: Abstinence is the act of doing without or avoiding something.. Particular days of abstinence during Lent are Fridays, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. As canon law states, Catholics over the age of 14 are expected to abstain from the eating of meat on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays throughout the Lenten Season. STATIONS OF THE CROSS Fridays during Lent we will be having the Stations of the Cross at 7:30PM and every Wednesday during Lent there will be a ST. THERESA S CARD PARTY COMMITTEE It is that time again our Card Party Committee is in the process of getting the Card Party underway for May as they have done in the past years. Almost everyone receives something for Christmas that they don t want or can t use...it s inevitable. We would be happy to take them off your hands. We can use anything that is NEW OR UNUSED such as picture frames, candle sets, wallets etc. Thank you for your consideration and all you do to help make the card party a success!
