2 CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX FROM THE DESK OF FATHER DERIVAN: Each Sunday or Saturday evening when you come to Mass during Advent, we light one more candle of the Advent Wreath. It reminds us that the weeks of Advent go by quickly and we must use them well. As an old rhyme puts it, First one, then two, then three, then four /And then the Lord Jesus is at the door. The candles remind us, of course, of the weeks of Advent. But I like to think that each of the candles of the Advent Wreath also reminds us of the main persons of Advent, those people who speak God s word of Advent to us. The first candle reminds us of Isaiah the prophet, that great man of God who lived eight hundred years before Jesus and told the people that one day a child would be born for us, a son given to us, upon whose shoulders dominion would rest, and they would call Him Wonderful Counselor, God the Hero, Father Forever, Prince of Peace. The third candle, which we light next week, is the pink candle, reminding us of Our Blessed Mother, to whom Advent belongs so specially. The fourth candle reminds us of good St. Joseph, that just man who welcomed Mary and Jesus to his home and to his heart and shows us how to do the same. But I skipped, of course, the second candletoday s candle. It belongs to one who stands tall in the Bible, in the history of salvation, and in the annals of human history. He was called John, John the Baptist. How can we possibly talk about him? Cousin of Jesus, prophet of the desert, preacher of repentance, baptizer at the Jordan River. Kings and important people, as well as the simple ordinary people who longed for God and longed for truth, all of them came to hear John. His words were electrifying. He spoke the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. He called King Herod an adultererand that was the truth. He told people they were sinners in need of forgivenessand that was the truth. He told the world to prepare the way for the One who was to come, the One who would save the worldand that was the truth. St. John the Baptist died as a martyr for telling the truth. In life and in death, truth was what he was all about. Dear friends, St. John the Baptist stands before us and before the world and continues to challenge us with the truth. If John were standing here today as he stood at the Jordan River, what would he have to say? He would still call us sinners, in need of contrition, in need of forgivenessand he would tell us that if we think we are not sinners, we are not telling the truth about ourselves. John would tell us that we have more to do to prepare Christ s way in the world of todaythat we have to fight hard to withstand temptation, to overcome materialism, to be truly spiritual people in a world that tries to steer us away from God and the truth. I wonder what John the Baptist would have to say about our societywhere abortion is permitted and human life is cheapened; where children are exposed to sensuality in music, in television, in the Internet, everywhere, growing up in a society that says anything goes. I wonder what John would say in a world where people say they are too busy for God, too busy for Church, too busy to obey the commandments. I wonder what St. John the Baptist, the prophet of truth, would say in a society where so many people really do not want to face the truth about themselves, about the quality of their lives, about the way they treat their neighbor, about the way they treat God? I suppose we do not really have to wonder what St. John the Baptist would say about all of this. He would tell the truth. He would tell people to look into the mirror of their lives and ask them to see God standing by their side. He would tell them to prepare the way of the Lord and make a straight path for God to their hearts. Two thousand years have come and gone since St. John the Baptist preached at the Jordan River. But in a sense he still preaches today. He stands before good people like yourself and says, Keep up what you are doing. Never be discouraged. Never be afraid. Truth will win out. For Jesus is coming. Let us take John s Advent message with us today. Let his candle on the Advent Wreath remind us that our lives must burn brightly with truth. May St. John the Baptist who feared no one, only God, teach us how to live Advent and to live Christian lifealways ready, ready to live the truth, ready to prepare the way for Christ the Lord. Father Thomas B. Derivan THE GIVING TREE The Giving Tree is our parish s opportunity during this Advent season to share the joy of Our Savior with those in need. 3 PRAYER FOR ADVENT Lord Jesus, stir up my heart this Advent with a lively desire for your coming. Though I am tempted to settle for the illusions of happiness, strengthen me to seek the real thing in you. Amid the sometimes frantic pace of preparation for Christmas, give me a joyful sense of your presence. When I am faced with the darkness of suffering and death, remind me that you were born because we desperately needed a Savior and that we have your promise of eternal life. Amen. SOLEMNITY OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION: This Thursday, December 8, is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Our Blessed Mother Mary when we remember that she was conceived without sin. It is a holyday of obligation. Our country is under the special patronage of the Immaculate Conception. Our Masses on Thursday will be at 8:00AM, 9:00AM, 10:30AM, 12Noon (with Adoration) and an evening Mass at 7:30PM PETITION BOOK Have you noticed our Petition Book in the vestibule of the Church? Every Saturday before the 5:00PM Mass, the petitions entered into the book for that week are brought up to the altar of the Blessed Mother, where they remain for all the weekend Masses. Please pray for these intentions. PRAYER TO OUR BLESSED MOTHER WRITTEN BY POPE FRANCIS Mary, Virgin and Mother, you who, moved by the Holy Spirit, welcomed the word of life in the depths of your humble faith As you gave yourself completely to the Eternal One, help us to say our own yes to the urgent call, as pressing as ever, to proclaim the good news of Jesus. Filled with Christ s presence, you brought joy to John the Baptist, making him exult in the womb of his mother. Brimming over with joy, you sang of the great things done by God. Standing at the foot of the cross with unyielding faith, you received the joyful comfort of the resurrection, and joined the disciples in awaiting the Spirit so that the evangelizing Church might be born. Obtain for us now a new ardor born of the resurrection, that we may bring to all the Gospel of life which triumphs over death. Give us a holy courage to seek new paths, that the gift of unfading beauty may reach every man and woman. Virgin of listening and contemplation, Mother of love, Bride of the eternal wedding feast, pray for the Church, whose pure icon you are, that she may never be closed in on herself or lose her passion for establishing God s kingdom. Star of the new evangelization, help us to bear radiant witness to communion, service, ardent and generous faith, justice and love of the poor, that the joy of the Gospel may reach to the ends of the earth, illuminating even the fringes of our world. Mother of the living Gospel, wellspring of happiness for God s little ones, pray for us. Amen. Alleluia! SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 8 FEAST OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION A feast called the Conception of Mary arose in the Eastern Church in the seventh century. It came to the West in the eighth century. In the eleventh century it received its present name, the Immaculate Conception. In the eighteenth century it became a feast of the universal Church. In 1854 Pius IX gave the infallible statement: The most Blessed Virgin Mary, in the first instant of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege granted by almighty God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the savior of the human race, was preserved free from all stain of original sin. It took a long time for this doctrine to develop. While many Fathers and Doctors of the Church considered Mary the greatest and holiest of the saints, they often had difficulty in seeing Mary as sinlesseither at her conception or throughout her life. This is one of the Church teachings that arose more from the piety of the faithful than from the insights of brilliant theologians. Even such champions of Mary as Bernard and Thomas Aquinas could not see theological justification for this teaching. Two Franciscans, William of Ware and Blessed John Duns Scotus, helped develop the theology. They point out that Mary s Immaculate Conception enhances Jesus redemptive work. Other members of the human race are cleaned from original sin after birth. In Mary, Jesus work was so powerful as to prevent original sin at the outset. In Luke 1:28 the angel Gabriel, speaking on God s behalf, addresses Mary as full of grace (or highly favored ). In that context this phrase means that Mary is receiving all the special divine help necessary for the task ahead. However, the Church grows in understanding with the help of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit led the church, especially nontheologians, to the insight that Mary had to be the most perfect work of God next to the Incarnation. Or rather, Mary s intimate association with the Incarnation called for the special involvement of God in Mary s whole life. The logic of piety helped God s people to believe that Mary was full of grace and free of sin from the first moment of her existence. Moreover, this great privilege of Mary is the highlight of all that God has done in Jesus. Rightly understood, the incomparable holiness of Mary shows forth the incomparable goodness of God. [Mary] gave to the world the Life that renews all things, and she was enriched by God with gifts appropriate to such a role. It is no wonder, then, that the usage prevailed among the holy Fathers whereby they called the mother of God entirely holy and free from all stain of sin, fashioned by the Holy Spirit into a kind of new substance and new creature. Adorned from the first instant of her conception with the splendors of an entirely unique holiness, the Virgin of Nazareth is, on God s command, greeted by an angel messenger as full of grace (cf. Luke 1:28). To the heavenly messenger she replies: Behold the handmaid of the Lord, be it done to me according to thy word (Luke 1:38)

5 DECEMBER 6 FEAST OF ST. NICHOLAS St. Nicholas, a bishop in 4thcentury Turkey, is one of the saints most revered among Orthodox Christians. To this day Christians tell stories of his concern for the poor. Once Bishop Nicholas heard a poor man had too little money for his three daughters to marry. Secretly at night he tossed bags of his own money through the poor man s window. Another story remembers how Nicholas helped his people during a famine as the wharf ships loaded with grain arrived en route Rome. Bishop Nicholas asked the captain for grain to keep his people from starving. The captain insisted the grain belonged to the emperor, who would punish him for shorting the amount of grain in the shipment. Nicholas suggested that he take just a little grain for the poor from each ship. The captain finally agreed. When he arrived in Rome, the emperor s soldiers weighed the grain and found not a kernel missinga miracle of justice. Celebrate St. Nicholas s feast day by having family members put a shoe outside their doors before going to bed on December 5th. Imitate St. Nicholas and put a small gift or piece of candy in each shoe. AMBROSE BORN 339/340DIED 397 St. Ambrose was born in Trier in Germany. He was sent to Rome to study law. While he was practicing law in the Roman courts, he was appointed governor of the area around Milan. Because he was governor, Ambrose was asked to preside over the election of a new bishop for Milan. There was a great argument over the election. Ambrose went to the church and began to speak to the people. Suddenly they began to call out, Let Ambrose be bishop! To his amazement, both sides in the dispute agreed that he should become the bishop. Ambrose did not want to do this. Although his family was Christian, he had not yet been baptized. However, the people insisted, and a few days after his baptism, Ambrose was ordained a priest and consecrated bishop of Milan. Ambrose gave his share of his family s wealth to the poor and urged others to do the same. As a bishop, Ambrose became famous for his preaching. People came from far away to hear his sermons. One of those who came to listen was Saint Augustine. In the time of Ambrose, there were many people who followed the teachings of a man called Arius. Arius taught that Christ was not God. An early council of Christian churches in the year 325 proclaimed that this doctrine was false and that people who taught it or believed it were in error. One of the Arians was the Empress Justina. She ordered Ambrose to hand over his church to the Arians for the Easter services. Ambrose refused, saying: A bishop cannot give up the temple of God. The empress sent soldiers to take over the church, but Ambrose s people would not let this happen. As a result there was a big riot, and finally the troops withdrew. However, Justina didn t give up. She had the court order Ambrose to appear before the emperor to debate with the Arian bishop. Ambrose knew that this was a trick to arrest him and put him in prison. Therefore he and his people remained within the church which was surrounded by soldiers. They prayed and sang hymns and psalms. Ambrose preached, telling the people that the emperor is a member of the Church and is not above the Church. Finally the soldiers left and the court dismissed the order. This was not the only time Ambrose had a dispute with the emperor. When some soldiers were killed in a riot, Emperor Theodosius, for revenge, told his troops to kill everyone in sight. About seven thousand people were murdered. Ambrose announced that unless the emperor did public penance for such a terrible crime, he would not be allowed to come to the Eucharist and to be part of the Christian Church. When the emperor agreed to do the penance, the people were astounded, for no one ever told an emperor what to do, nor did an emperor ever admit that he was wrong. St. Ambrose was a man of prayer as well as of action. His writings include catechism lessons to the newly baptized on baptism, confirmation, and the Eucharist. Other writings were the sermons that he preached.
