THERESA, BRONX FROM THE DESK OF FATHER DERIVAN When Monsignor Mario Ponsiglione built this church after the tragic fire which destroyed the first St. Theresa Church, he certainly took care of every detail. When you get a chance, just look around the church and see the beauty that is in this house of Godstatues, pictures, even the altar itself. There are so many beautiful things here if we take the time to see them. For instance something you may not know is that Monsignor placed the names of the priests serving here when the church was dedicated on the back part of the altar, one of them my dear friend Father Herbert D Argenio, one of the finest priests ever to serve in our Archdiocese. Those names are a constant reminder to us priests of the men of God who served here in the past. And then there are the windows. Our church has beautiful windows. They are works of art. When Bishop Walsh was here for Confirmation a few weeks ago, he mentioned to me how delighted he always is to visit here and to reflect on the windows. And one of those windows draws our special attention today. It is the third window on the right side of the church. It depicts the feast we are celebrating today, the Feast of Pentecost, celebrating that day when the Holy Spirit came to the apostles fifty days after Easter, appearing in the form of wind and fire, wind to blow away their fears and fire to put them on fire with the zeal to spread the gospel to the ends of the earth. I like to call this the birthday window. When you have a birthday, you like to have a picture of those celebrating together. This window is a picture of a birthday, the birthday of the Church, the birthday of Christians, our birthday as followers of Our Lord Jesus Christ. On this birthday of the Church, think about and pray about our Churchnot just our church right here, but the Church of Jesus throughout the world, the Church of Pope Francis and Cardinal Dolan, the Church of great bishops and priests, but at the same time the Church that is made up of goodbelieving and goodliving people like yourselves, the Church of mothers and fathers and grandparents, the Church of children and grandchildren, the Church of the joyful and the Church of the sorrowful, the Church of people with their many ups and downswhich of course means all of us. Let me tell you about a great man of the Church. Many of you remember the late John Cardinal O Connor. I have great affection for Cardinal O Connor. I have his portrait displayed in the rectory. We celebrated his anniversary of death just a few days ago on May 3rd when God called him home eighteen years ago. Cardinal O Connor served as a parish priest, then a navy chaplain for 27 years, then bishop and cardinal, the comforter of those afflicted with AIDS, and the great defender of the unborn children. At one Ordination Mass Cardinal O Connor preached to the newlyordained priests about the Church, the Church they were about to serve. I think his words are a beautiful reflection for us on this birthday of the Church. Let me share his words with you: The Church is younger than the springtime, but she counts her years in centuries. The Church is not the Church triumphant. This is the Church of this world, the Church of God s people, God s people who are strong and holy, God s people who are weak and sinful; God s people who are good and generous, God s people who at times are selfish and demanding. These are God s people, not yet a fully risen people, not yet a perfect people. These are the people of the Church. I give you one mandate: love our Church, love God s people. Love them for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health. Love them until death after which our Church will be transfigured in glory. Those words were addressed by Cardinal O Connor years ago to newly ordained priests. Those words take on special meaning for us this week. For on Saturday, May 26th, another new priest will be ordained, Father Louis Masi, our St. Theresa favorite son. How blessed our parish is to have one of our own becoming a priest! The soontobe Father Louis is a graduate of our school, a great helper over the years to Father Grippo and myself, and an inspiration to all our young people to follow the Lord s call even as he did. I have no doubt that the words of Cardinal O Conner will live in Father Louis heart: Love our Church, love God s people. Wherever he will serve as a priest, he certainly will bring the love of Jesus there. On this Pentecost Sunday, as we celebrate the birthday of the Church, the Lord is giving the Church of New York a birthday present. And his name is Father Louis Masi. Congratulations, Father Louis! And remember, you always belong to St. Theresa s. Father Thomas B. Derivan Father Louis will celebrate his First Mass here next Sunday, May 27th at 2:15PM. There will be a reception following in the auditorium, sponsored by the Altar Society. PENTECOST PRAYER Father of light, from Whom every good gift comes, send Your Spirit into our lives with the power of a mighty wind, and by the flame of Your wisdom open the horizons of our minds. Loosen our tongues to sing Your praise in words beyond the power of speech, for without Your Spirit man could never raise his voice in words of peace or announce the truth that Jesus is Lord, Who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

3 PENTECOST SUNDAY A MESSAGE FROM POPE FRANCIS FOR THE FEAST OF PENTECOST: The feast of Pentecost makes us relive the Church s beginnings. The Book of the Acts of the Apostles tells that, 50 days after Easter, in the house where Jesus disciples were, suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house...and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit (2:24). The disciples are completely transformed by this outpouring: fear is supplanted by courage, imperviousness gives way to the proclamation, and all doubt is driven away by faith filled with love. It is the baptism of the Church, which thus began her journey in history, guided by the power of the Holy Spirit. This event, which changes the heart and life of the Apostles and the other disciples, is immediately felt outside the Upper Room. Indeed, that door kept locked for 50 days is finally thrust open and the first Christian Community, no longer closed in upon itself, begins speaking to crowds of different origins about the mighty works that God has done (cf. v. 11), that is to say, of the Resurrection of Jesus who was crucified. Each one present hears his own language being spoken by the disciples. The gift of the Holy Spirit restores the linguistic harmony that was lost in Babel, prefiguring the universal mission of the Apostles. The Church is not born isolated, she is born universal, one, and Catholic, with a precise identity, open to all, not closed, an identity which embraces the entire world, excluding no one. Mother Church closes her door in the face of no one, no one! Not even to the greatest sinner, to no one! This is through the power through the grace of the Holy Spirit. Mother Church opens, opens wide her doors to everyone because she is mother. The Holy Spirit at Pentecost pours into the hearts of the disciples and begins a new season: the season of testimony and fraternity. It is a season which comes from above, comes from God, like the tongues of fire that rest on the head of each disciple. It was the flame of love which burns all harshness; it was the tongue of the Gospel which surpasses manmade borders and reaches the hearts of the multitudes, without distinction of language, race or nationality. As on that day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit is poured our constantly even today on the Church and on each one of us so we may step outside of our mediocrity and our imperviousness and communicate to the entire world the merciful love of the Lord. Communicating the merciful love and the fire of the Holy Spirit, so that while we proclaim Jesus risen, living and present in our midst, we may warm our heart and also the hearts of the peoples drawing near to Him, the way, truth and life. Let us entrust ourselves to the maternal intercession of Mary Most Holy, who was present as Mother in the midst of the disciples in the Upper Room: she is the mother of the Church, the mother of Jesus became mother of the Church. Let us entrust ourselves to Her that the Holy Spirit may descend in abundance upon the Church of our time, fill the hearts of all the faithful and kindle in them the fire of his love. May 24, 2015 THIS MONDAY FEAST OF MARY, MOTHER OF THE CHURCH Pope Francis has decreed that Catholics around the world will mark the feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church on the Monday after Pentecost each year, which is this Monday, May 21. The Gospel reading for the feast recounts how from the cross Jesus entrusted Mary to his disciples as their mother and entrusted his disciples to Mary as her children. Pope Francis approved the decree after having attentively considered how greatly the promotion of this devotion might encourage the growth of the maternal sense of the Church in the pastors, religious and faithful, as well as a growth of genuine Marian piety, the decree said. Blessed Paul VI in 1964 had formally bestowed the title of Mother of the Church on Mary, but recognition of her motherly care for the Church and for believers had already spanned centuries. Honoring Mary as Mother of the Church on the day after Pentecost also highlights for Catholics that Mary was present with the disciples on Pentecost, praying with them as the Holy Spirit descended. Mary, from the day of Pentecost, has never ceased to take motherly care of all of us as individuals and as members of the Church of her Son. Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for us. HOMEBOUND If any member of your family or if any of your neighbors are Homebound and would like to receive Holy Communion at home, please call the Rectory so that a Priest or Eucharistic Minister might visit them. HANDICAP ENTRANCE TO THE CHURCH The side entrance to the Church on Pilgrim Avenue will be open every Sunday for anyone who is handicapped or in a wheelchair. Also this same entrance will be opened every weekday until 9:30AM.

4 MAY 20, 2018 MAY 21 BLESSED FRANZ JÄGERSTÄTTER ( ) Called to serve his country as a Nazi solider, Franz eventually refused, and this husband and father of three daughtersrosalie, Marie and Aloisiawas executed because of it. Born in St. Radegund in Upper Austria, Franz lost his father during World War I and was adopted after Heinrich Jagerstatter married Rosalia Huber. As a young man, he loved to ride his motorcycle and was the natural leader of a gang whose members were arrested in 1934 for brawling. For three years he worked in the mines in another city and then returned to St. Radegund, where he became a farmer, married Franziska and lived his faith with quiet but intense conviction. In 1938, he publicly opposed the German Anschluss, annexation, of Austria. The next year, he was drafted into the Austrian army, trained for seven months and then received a deferment. In 1940, Franz was called up again but allowed to return home at the request of the town s mayor. He was in active service between October 1940 and April 1941, but was again deferred. His pastor, other priests, and the bishop of Linz urged him not to refuse to serve if drafted. In February 1943, Franz was called up again and reported to army officials in Enns, Austria. When he refused to take the oath of loyalty to Hitler, he was imprisoned in Linz. Later he volunteered to serve in the medical corps but was not assigned there. During Holy Week Franz wrote to his wife: Easter is coming and, if it should be God s will that we can never again in this world celebrate Easter together in our intimate family circle, we can still look ahead in the happy confidence that, when the eternal Easter morning dawns, no one in our family circle shall be missingso we can then be permitted to rejoice together forever. He was transferred in May to a prison in Berlin. Challenged by his attorney that other Catholics were serving in the army, Franz responded, I can only act on my own conscience. I do not judge anyone. I can only judge myself. He continued, I have considered my family. I have prayed and put myself and my family in God s hands. I know that, if I do what I think God wants me to do, he will take care of my family. On August 8, 1943, Franz wrote to Fransizka: Dear wife and mother, I thank you once more from my heart for everything that you have done for me in my lifetime, for all the sacrifices that you have borne for me. I beg you to forgive me if I have hurt or offended you, Just as I have forgiven everything...my heartfelt greetings for my dear children. I will surely beg the dear God, if I am permitted to enter heaven soon, that he will set aside a little place in heaven for all of you. Franz was beheaded and cremated the following day. In 1946, his ashes were reburied in St. Radegund near a memorial inscribed with his name and the names of almost 60 village men who died during their military service. Blessed Franz was beatified on October 26, His feast day is May 21st, the day of his baptism. CHRISTIANS ARE THE PEOPLE OF THE SPIRIT Meaning We call Pentecost the birthday of the Church. On this day the ascended Jesus sent the promised Counselor by pouring the Holy Spirit on his disciples (John 16:7). Filling the house with a sound of wind, the Spirit energized the disciples, showing them the meaning of the Old Testament and how Jesus life and death fulfilled it. Just as important, the Spirit pushed the disciples into the street, baptizing them with power to bring this Truth to all the people of the world. The Gift of the Spirit Throughout Scripture, the Holy Spirit is both a gift of Jesus and the Spirit of Jesus himself. In the New Testament, this Spirit of God descended on Jesus at his baptism (Matt. 3:16). On Pentecost the Spirit descended on Jesus followers to give them power, as he had promised (Luke 24:29). In the Book of Acts, the Spirit that guided the apostles was called the Spirit of Jesus. Peter called the Day of Pentecost the realization of Joel s prophecy about the outpouring of the Spirit (Acts 2:1621) a gift promised not only to the Pentecost disciples, but to you and your children and to all that are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to him (Acts 2:39). Pentecost the Fulfillment of Easter The Day of Pentecost completes the Easter Season because, through the gift of the Holy Spirit, the disciples were able to understand the meaning of Jesus suffering, death and resurrection. The end of the Easter Season opens the door to the liturgical Season of Ordinary Time, dozens of weeks that carry us from Pentecost Sunday to the First Sunday in Advent. Pentecost, meaning 50th day is a Christian festival with Jewish roots. For Jews, Pentecost was the Feast of Weeks, celebrating the end of the grain harvest. The Jewish Pentecost also celebrated the giving of the Law and the founding of the Jewish faith community. Early Christians gave thanks in their Pentecost for the fruits of the Spirit, as well as the founding of the Church, the successor to the Old Testament community. Tongues of fire appeared to hover over the disciples on Pentecost as a sign of the Lord s presence and power. In Old Testament times, fire was often a sign of God s presence and holiness, which might purify or punish. John the Baptist talked about a baptism with the Holy Spirit and with fire which Jesus would bring. Red, the liturgical color for Pentecost Day, traditionally reminds us of the offering of lifelives of Christian martyrs gone before us and our own livesin the service of Our Lord. 5 MAY 22 SAINT RITA OF CASCIA b. 1381, Roccaporena, Italy d. May 22, 1457, Cascia, Italy The Saint of the Impossible was a miracle baby. Legend has it that an angel appeared to Amata Ferri and told her that after twelve years of childless marriage she would bear a daughter and name her Margherita. All her life she would be known as Rita. When Rita was only a few months old, her parents left her in a basket under a shady tree while they cut wheat in nearby fields. A peasant who had cut his hand was looking for help when he saw bees swarming around the baby s mouth. He brushed them away and his wound was suddenly healed. This miracle of the bees was the first of many in Rita s life. At sixteen, Rita wanted to enter a convent, but her elderly parents insisted that she marry the wealthy Paolo Mancini. They were together for eighteen years, and Rita bore two sons, but she suffered from Paolo s violent temper. He beat her and broke all her wedding china. Paolo s rages made many enemies and one night, while returning from nearby Cascia, he was murdered. When a neighbor brought Rita the news, she responded: May God pardon the murderers, as I have already forgiven them. Her sons were not as generous. They had inherited their father s temper and joined his family in a vendetta. Rita lived in fear that her sons would die like their father. Instead, they were taken during an epidemic. Rita was consoled by the knowledge that they died in a state of grace. She next sought to join the Augustinian Order, which appealed to her because members were not cloistered but moved around freely to help the sick and afflicted. They did not admit widows, however Rita pleaded with the prioress to make an exception, but after two interviews the prioress still rejected her. (It is possible that the nuns did not want to antagonize Rita s violent inlaws.) Then one night, three great saints appeared to Rita in a dream: John the Baptist, Augustine of Hippo, and Nicholas of Tolentine. By the light of the moon they led Rita to the convent. She knocked at the gate but everyone was asleep. The next thing Rita knew, she was sitting in the convent chapel. When dawn arrived, the nuns marched in for morning prayers. They saw Rita but said nothing. Finally the prioress arrived, but she could tell that Rita was as surprised as everyone else. Bowing to the will of God, she allowed Rita to take her place among them. The convent s novicemistress tried to test Rita s vocation. She once ordered Rita to water a dry, dead stick every day until it blossomed. Rita obediently watered the branch until it miraculously sprouted green leaves. Six centuries later, the Vine of Saint Rita still blooms in the convent courtyard. The Sisters harvest the grapes, and the leaves are dried, powdered, and given away to the faithful. Rita had been a nun for more than two decades when she was so moved by a homily on the Passion of Christ that she stood before a crucifix and begged Christ to allow her to share his pain. Suddenly, a piece of thorn fell from the crucifix and embedded itself in Rita s forehead. The wound brought her terrible suffering for fifteen years, and it is the reason that Rita is usually represented with a crown of thorns over her nun s veil. Rita was bedridden during the last winter of her life. A visiting cousin asked if she wanted anything. Rita yearned to smell a rose from her parents garden, but it was January and her cousin considered this impossible. She returned to their village and discovered that a single rose was blooming exactly where Rita said it would be. She brought it to Rita, who gave thanks to God for this sign of his love. She died a few months later. Today the annual celebration at Rita s shrine in Cascia includes a blessing of motorbikes. The riders gather in front her shrine to ask Rita s protection and to offer red roses. From her miraculous birth to the fragrant rose at her deathbed, Rita proved that with faith nothing is impossible. to PRAYER Come, Holy Spirit, Replace the tension within us with a holy relaxation. Replace the turbulence within us with a sacred calm. Replace anxiety within us with a quiet confidence. Replace the fear within us with a strong faith. Replace the bitterness within us with the sweetness of grace. Replace the darkness within us with a gently light. Replace the coldness within us with a loving warmth. Replace the night within us with your light. Straighten our crookedness. Fill our emptiness. Dull the edge of our pride. Sharpen the edge of our humility Light the fires of our love. Quench the flames of our lust. Let us see ourselves as You see us that we may see You as You have promised.. and be fortunate to hear Your word; Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God (Mt, 5:8) Virginia Garey Food is now being collected for our Food Pantry.
