2 CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX FROM THE DESK OF FATHER DERIVAN: Once again we emphasize the importance of having a Health Care Proxy, a person to whom you designate permission to make decisions for you in life threatening illnesses when you are unable to do so. Such a person (spouse, child, neighbor or friend) should faithfully follow your desire and your direction in such matters as the continuation or discontinuation of life prolonging techniques. Since the time of Pope Pius XII, the Church has made the distinction between ordinary and extraordinary means of preserving life. Ordinary means (such as nourishment, acceptable health procedures, use of drugs that have a reasonable likelihood or helping the person) are mandatory. Extraordinary means (experimental procedures, drugs or treatments) are not. Your Health Care Proxy should be familiar with your wishes and should have a copy of the proxy form that you fill out. We have printed in our bulletin several times a standard Health Care Proxy form issued by our Archdiocese. We present it here for your use again. If you have any questions about this, please see one of our priests. Father Thomas B. Derivan Making Decisions at the End of Life Moral Principles Decisions regarding the medical care of gravely ill person have great moral significance. They require us to face the reality of suffering and death, in the light of faith, confident in the redemptive power of our suffering united to the Cross of Christ, with the sure hope of the resurrection. No matter how grave a patient s ailment or incapacity, they always remain a person, made in the image and likeness of God, and precious in his sight. It is always wrong to deliberately cause the death of an innocent person, either by our direct actions or by failing to perform a duty. The fundamental distinction that should be borne in mind is whether medical treatment is ordinary, which is morally obligatory, or extraordinary, which is morally optional and can be declined. What are extraordinary treatments? According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, they are medical procedures that are excessively burdensome, dangerous, or disproportionate to the expected outcome. If you decline such treatments, you are not causing death. Instead, you are refusing over-zealous treatment and acknowledging the inevitability of death. (Catechism, no. 2278) Even if death is imminent, we must always provide the ordinary care owed to a sick person nutrition, hydration, cleanliness, warmth, etc. Death from an underlying cause, such as cancer, must at some point be accepted, but a person should never die from starvation or dehydration. On this subject, Pope John Paul II has said, I should like particularly to underline how the administration of water and food, even when provided by artificial means, always represents a natural means of preserving life, not a medical act. Its use, furthermore, should be considered, in principle, ordinary and proportionate, and as such morally obligatory Ordinary care would also include providing a sick person with painkillers, even at the risk of shortening their life. In this case, death is not willed as either an end or a means. (Catechism 2279) Living Wills Much is heard about living wills - a specific instruction on a particular course of medical treatment, usually with regard to life-sustaining treatment. They are also known as advance directives. There are many problems with living wills. They are inflexible, and tie the hands of your doctors and loved ones. Because it s impossible to foresee your exact medical situation, they are inherently vague and can be confusing to doctors. Most living will forms that are generally available are actually refuse treatment forms that create a presumption in favor of death. For these reasons, we strongly recommend that you avoid a so-called living will. Instead, we recommend that you appoint a Health Care Proxy. Health Care Proxies Under New York State law, a Health Care Proxy allows you to choose someone you trust to make medical decisions for you, if you can t do it for yourself. It only takes effect if you are incapacitated and it lapses if you recover. You should choose someone as your Proxy whom you trust to act in your best interests, according to your moral values. You should give your Proxy specific instructions about your Catholic values, especially about assisted nutrition and hydration. You do not need a lawyer to appoint a Health Care Proxy-all you need is to have two witnesses to your signature. A sample Health Care Proxy form is available on the Family Life/Respect Life Office website, at

3 FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 14 ST. KATERI TEKAKWITHA ( ) HER PATHWAY TO SAINTHOOD Kateri Tekakwitha was a young Mohawk woman who lived in the 17th century. The story of her conversion to Christianity, her courage in the face of suffering and her extraordinary holiness is an inspiration to all Christians. Follow us as we share with you the life of Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, the first Native American Saint in the United States of America. Many private miracles have already centered around Blessed Kateri, known as the Lily of the Mohawks and the holy grounds at the National Shrine of Blessed Tekakwitha located in Fonda, New York. The shrine was founded in honor of Kateri, for it was here that she was baptized on Easter Sunday, April 5, 1676, and lived her teenage years. Kateri was born in 1656 of an Algonquin mother and a Mohawk chief in the Mohawk fortified village of Canaouaga or Ossernenon (modern day Auriesville) in upstate New York. When she was only 4 years old her parents and brother died of smallpox. Kateri survived the disease, but it left her face badly scarred and her eyesight impaired. Because of her poor vision, Kateri was named Tekakwitha, which means she who bumps into things. Kateri was taken in by her uncle who was bitterly opposed to Christianity. When she was 8 years old, Kateri s foster family, in accordance with Iroquois custom, paired her with a young boy whom they expected she would marry. However, Kateri wanted to dedicate her life to God. Her uncle distrusted the settlers because of the way they treated the Indians and who were responsible for introducing smallpox and other deadly diseases into the Indian community. When Kateri was ten, in 1666, a war party composed of French soldiers and hostile Indians from Canada destroyed the Mohawk strongholds on the south bank of the Mohawk, including Ossernenon. The surviving Mohawks moved to the north side of the river and built their fortified village about half a mile west of the present village of Fonda. Kateri lived in Caughnawaga, site of the present Shrine, for her next ten years. When Kateri was 18 years of age, she began instructions in the Catholic Faith in secret. Her uncle finally relented and gave his consent for Kateri to become a Christian, provided that she did not try to leave the Indian village. For joining the Catholic Church, Kateri was ridiculed and scorned by villagers. She was subjected to unfair accusations and her life was threatened. Nearly two years after her baptism at the Kateri Shrine in Fonda she escaped to the Mission of St. Francis Xavier, a settlement of Christian Indians in Canada. The village is known for her gentleness, kindness, and good humor. On Christmas Day 1677 Kateri made her first Holy Communion and on the Feast of the Annunciation in 1679 made a vow of perpetual virginity. She also offered herself to the Blessed Mother Mary to accept her as a daughter. During her time in Canada, Kateri taught prayers to children and worked with the elderly and sick. She would often go to Mass both at dawn and sunset. She was known for her great devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and to the Cross of Christ. During the last years of her life, Kateri endured great suffering from a serious illness. She died on April 17th, 1680, shortly before her 24th birthday, and was buried in Kahnawake, Quebec, Canada. Kateri s final words were, Jesus Mary I love you. Witnesses reported that within a few minutes of her death, the pock marks from smallpox completely vanished and her face shone with radiant loveliness. Before her death, Kateri promised her friends that she would continue to love and pray for them in heaven. Both Native Americans and settlers immediately began praying for her heavenly intercession. Several people, including a priest who attended Kateri during her last illness, reported that Kateri had appeared to them and many healing miracles were attributed to her. Fifty years after Kateri s death the first convent for Indian nuns was established in Mexico. They have prayed daily for Sainthood for Blessed Kateri. Their prayers and the prayers of countless other Catholics have been answered. Pope Benedict XVI canonized St. Kateri on October 16, 2012 first Native American saint and model for all American Catholics. JULY 17 SERVANT OF GOD FRANCIS GARCÉS AND COMPANIONS Government interference in the missions and land grabbing sparked the Indian uprising which cost these friars their lives. A contemporary of the American Revolution and of Blessed Junipero Serra, Francisco Garcés was born in 1738 in Spain, where he joined the Franciscans. After ordination in 1763, he was sent to Mexico. Five years later he was assigned to San Xavier del Bac near Tucson, one of several missions the Jesuits had founded in Arizona and New Mexico before being expelled in 1767 from all territories controlled by the Catholic king of Spain. In Arizona, Francisco worked among the Papago, Yuma, Pima and Apache Native Americans. His missionary travels took him to the Grand Canyon and to California. Friar Francisco Palou, a contemporary, writes that Father Garcés was greatly loved by the indigenous peoples, among whom he lived unharmed for a long time. They regularly gave him food and referred to him as Viva Jesus, which was the greeting he taught them to use. For the sake of their indigenous converts, the Spanish missionaries wanted to organize settlements away from the Spanish soldiers and colonists. But the commandant in Mexico insisted that two new missions on the Colorado River, Misión San Pedro y San Pablo and Misión La Purisima Concepcion, be mixed settlements. A revolt among the Yumas against the Spanish left Friars Juan Diaz and Matias Moreno dead at Misión San Pedro y San Pablo. Friars Francisco Garcés and Juan Barreneche were killed at Misión La Purisima Concepción (the site of Fort Yuma). In the 18th century the indigenous peoples of the American Southwest saw Catholicism and Spanish rule as a package deal. When they wanted to throw off the latter, the new religion had to go also. Do we appreciate sufficiently the acceptable adjustment our faith can make among various peoples? Are we offended by the customs of Catholics in other cultures? Do we see our good example as a contribution to missionary evangelization? On a visit to Africa in 1969, Pope Paul VI told 22 young Ugandan converts that being a Christian is a fine thing but not always an easy one.

4 JULY 15, ST. THERESA FEAST Our 19th Annual Summer Festival is just days away. It will be held from July 22nd to the 26th. So tell your family and friends to save the date and make plans for a fun filled celebration. WELCOME Each year since the inception of the feast we have had a catchphrase that is the underlying theme of that years feast. The catchphrase is seen on the t-shirts of the volunteers and is the theme around which the religious observances are based. We have chosen as our theme this year Welcome. It is our way of reminding us that as Catholics our doors are open to all. What better way to say Welcome then to invite a friend or relative that has been away from the church for a while to accompany you the Feast. Make a stop in the Church and say a prayer, light a candle or attend one of the evening masses. It might be all that person needs to return to The Lord. RELIGIOUS SERVICES - Our religious observance schedule has been finalized. Each night we will have opening prayers, Holy Hour and Mass. Our procession through the streets with the statue of St. Theresa will take place on Sunday July 26th immediately after the 5:00pm Mass. We will have a concert in the Church by the combined St. Theresa, St. Frances De Chantal and Our Lady of the Assumption Choirs following the procession. VOLUNTEERS-We would like to thank those parishioners that have signed up to help us during our feast. Volunteers are reminded to stop by the school auditorium on Wednesday, July 15th between 7:30-8:30pm to pick up their t-shirts. If you cannot make it that night we will be back in the auditorium distributing t-shirts on Monday night July 20th between 7:30-8:30pm. It s not too late to sign up. Whatever amount of time you can give will be greatly appreciated. Fellow parishioners will be outside of church before and after all of the weekend Masses. Stop by to see how you can help. It takes all of us working together to keep our parish the spiritual center of our community. RAFFLE-As part of our feast we will once again hold our Grand Raffle. Take the raffle tickets to your place of employment or a family gathering and ask a number of people to share in the $ cost of a ticket and ultimately share the $30, grand prize. For those of you that are not on our mailing list you can pick up a ticket or two in front of the church today. Raffle tickets are also available on the parish web-site. Just click on the Feast link. 5 A SUMMER BLESSING FOR CHILDREN May our loving God watch over you and keep alive in your heart all that you have learned this year. Keep your mind on God. Remember to pray often and to celebrate your faith, at home with your family, and at Mass with your faith family. Keep your faith in God. Let all the joys of summer remind you of God s goodness. never forget that God is always with you, no matter what. May the God of all creation, who comes to us in Jesus, and lives among us in the Holy Spirit, keep you safe, happy, and holy this summer and always. Amen. MASSES IN PLACES YOU ARE VISITING FOR VACATION During vacation time if you need to find out the location of the nearest Catholic Church in places where you are visiting, consult which will give you the location, Mass times and other information. SUMMER ATTIRE With summer here it is natural for us to pull out our warm weather clothing and don shorts and flip-flops. It is now the time to think about a dress code appropriate for attending Mass. Let us keep foremost in our minds that upon entering the church, we enter the house of God and come into the real presence of Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. While our interior disposition of reverence is most important, it should also be evident in modesty and reverence in our dress and actions. We should not be wearing shorts of any kind, halter-tops, flip-flops, short skirts, or clothing that exposes the back or midriff. While some of these items may be appropriate for picnics or other outdoor activities, they are not appropriate for the worship of God in church. May we give due honor, respect and glory to God by showing our reverential love for Him and our fellow parishioners through our modest attire and good example as we worship in His presence. ST.
