2 C S. T, B FROM THE DESK OF FATHER DERIVAN: Fifteen years ago today, the date September 11 became a day of tragedy. We probably all remember exactly where we were on that terrible day when we heard the news of two planes crashing into the World Trade Center. September 11 became a date forever imprinted in our minds, one that we pray that we and our children will never see again. We must never forget that day. Our children thankfully, did not witness it. But we adults did and that memory will always be there. But something else must remain in our memories, something more powerful than tragedy. What we must never forget is the goodness of that daythe goodness of ordinary people just going to work, as they always did, not realizing that tragedy would come; the goodness of people helping one another when tragedy struck, emergency rescue personnel, of course, but also ordinary citizens, just helping one another to get through to safety; the goodness of families being strong, even though they lost fathers or mothers, sons or daughters; the goodness of Americans coming together as one in prayer and in mutual support. That was the goodness of September 11, 2001, a goodness that came out of tragedy, a goodness that tragedy could not overcome. It was a goodness that came from faith, from trust in God, and from a love that showed itself in action. We must continue to live in that goodness. We must not let the goodness of September 11 fade away with the passage of time. Our best honor to those who lost their lives on that day is simply to live good lives, to do as they did and would have continued to do, if they had the chance. Our best honor to them is to keep bringing goodness into our own lives and into the lives of others and not to wait for tragedy to happen to help our neighbor. The best way for us to conquer the evil that brought about September 11 is to make sure that we bring forth more goodness into our daily living, into our families, into our places of work, into our apartment buildings and neighborhood blocks. Love your children and grandchildren with a deeper love. Be a stronger friend, a more concerned fellowworker, a true neighbor. Then we are truly honoring the victims of that fateful day. May we overcome evil with goodness, not only on the 15th anniversary of September 11, 2001, but on every day that we live. Father Thomas B. Derivan IN MEMORY OF THE WORLD TRADE CENTER VICTIMS THEY ARE NOT FORGOTTEN At the rising of the Sun and at its going down, THEY ARE NOT FORGOTTEN At the blowing of the wind and the chill of the Winter, THEY ARE NOT FORGOTTEN At the opening of the buds and in the rebirth of Spring, THEY ARE NOT FORGOTTEN At the blueness of the skies and in the warmth of Summer, THEY ARE NOT FORGOTTEN At the rustling of the leaves and in the beauty of Autumn, THEY ARE NOT FORGOTTEN At the beginning of the year and when it ends, THEY ARE NOT FORGOTTEN When we are weary and in need of strength, THEY ARE NOT FORGOTTEN When we are lost and sick of heart, THEY ARE NOT FORGOTTEN When we have joy we crave to share, THEY ARE NOT FORGOTTEN When we have decisions that are difficult to make, THEY ARE NOT FORGOTTEN When we have achievements that are based on theirs, THEY ARE NOT FORGOTTEN As long as we live, they too will live for they are now a part of us. THEY ARE NOT FORGOTTEN. By Franciscan Friars

3 TWENTY FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME The following prayer was offered by our Retired Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI when he visited Ground Zero during his Apostolic Journey to New York on April 20, 2008: PRAYER OF HIS HOLINESS BENEDICT XVI at Ground Zero April 20, 2008 O God of love, compassion, and healing, look on us, people of many different faiths and traditions, who gather to remember a scene of incredible violence and pain. We ask you in your goodness to give eternal light and peace to all who died there the heroic firstresponders: our fire fighters, police officers, and emergency service workers, along with all the innocent men and women who were victims of this tragedy simply because their work or service brought them there on September 11, We ask you, in your compassion to bring healing to those who, because of their presence there that day, suffer from injuries and illness. Heal, too, the pain of stillgrieving families and all who lost loved ones in this tragedy. Give them strength to continue their lives with courage and hope. God of peace, bring your peace to our violent world: peace in the hearts of all men and women and peace among the nations of the earth. Turn to your way of love those whose hearts and minds are consumed with hatred. God of understanding, overwhelmed by the magnitude of this tragedy, we seek your light and guidance as we confront such terrible events. Grant that those whose lives were spared may live so that the lives lost on that day may not have been lost in vain. Comfort and console us, strengthen us in hope, and give us the wisdom and courage to work tirelessly for a world where true peace and love reign among nations and in the hearts of all. Amen WORLD MISSION SUNDAYSECOND COLLECTION Today is World Mission Sunday. Our second collection today will be taken up to support the missionary efforts of the Church throughout the world. As our Holy Father said in his Message for this Sunday, World Mission Sunday affords us the opportunity to reach out to the least of Christ s brethren through missionaries in every part of the world. There are two patron saints of the missions. One is St. Francis Xavier, a great missionary, who brought the gospel to the people of the Far East. But the other patron of the missions is a saint who never went to the missions, but who united her prayers and sacrifices for the missions and for missionaries, the great St. Theresa of the Child Jesus. On this Mission Sunday, we recall that we are to be like St. Theresa. We may never actually go to the missions as St. Francis Xavier did. But nonetheless we canand mustbe mission people as St. Theresa was. Your prayers at Mass, your sacrifices, your material support both in this collection which is for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith and also in other missionary causes that you assistall of these things show your love for the missions. We thank you for your generosity today. Those who have come into contact with Christ cannot keep Him for themselves. They must proclaim Him, Pope Benedict XVI has said. Thank you for proclaiming Jesus to those who are waiting to come to His love. BIBLE STUDY SEPTEMBER 14, :30PM Every Wednesday night at 7:30 PM in the Rectory Dining Room a group gathers seeking to grow closer to Christ by meditating on the Holy Scripture. Please come and be nourished by the Word of God. Everyone is invited to attend.

4 SEPTEMBER 16 ST. CORNELIUS & ST. CYPRIAN In the middle of the third century, the Church was still being persecuted. The fierce persecution of Emperor Decius claimed the life of Pope St. Fabian. The Church was without a pope for nearly a year. A holy priest of Rome, Cornelius, was elected in 251. He accepted because he loved Christ. He would serve the Church as pope even if his ministry would cost him his life. That is why Pope Cornelius was so greatly admired throughout the world. The bishops of Africa were especially outspoken in their love and loyalty to the pope. Bishop Cyprian of Carthage sent him letters of encouragement and support. Cyprian had been a convert at the age of twentyfive. He had astonished the Christians of Carthage by pledging a vow of perpetual chastity right before his baptism. He had eventually became a priest and in 249 a bishop. Bishop Cyprian greatly encouraged Pope Cornelius by reminding him that during the present persecution in Rome not a single Christian had given up the faith. St. Cyprian s writings explain the love that Christians should have for the whole Church. This love should be for the pope as well as for the local diocese and parish. Cyprian wrote a scholarly work on the unity of the Church. This remains an important topic for all times, including our own. Pope St. Cornelius died in exile at the port of Rome in September, of 253. Because he suffered so much as pope, he is considered a martyr. St. Cyprian died five years later during the persecution of Valerian. He was beheaded at Carthage on September 14, 258. Together they share a feast day to remind us of the unity that the Church should always enjoy. This unity is a mark of the presence of Jesus who is the Center. Let us pray for unity among people of different cultures, races, nations, and religions. BLESSED FRANCESCO BONIFACIO Priest and Martyr ( ) SEPTEMBER 11 Having aspired to the priesthood from his childhood, Francesco Bonifacio, of Piran, Slovenia, was ordained a priest at the age of twentyfour. In 1939, he was appointed pastor of a church in Villa Gardossi (near Buje, Croatia). Over the years that followed Father Bonifacio supported and defended his people who were suffering at the hands of both the Nazi invaders and the Communist Liberation Front of the Yugoslav regime. He strengthened and upheld their faith in the face of a concerted campaign of atheistic propaganda from the Communists. Father Bonifacio encouraged many young people to participate in the lay apostolate known as Catholic Action. He became a target of the Communists hatred, who despised him for his priesthood. Father Bonifacio was returning home after hearing confessions on September 11, 1946, when he was arrested by a band of Liberation Front soldiers and policemen. They took the thirtyfouryear old priest into the woods, where they tortured him and slew him, dumping his body in a ravine. CONFESSIONS: Are heard every Saturday from 4:00PM to 5:00PM or by appointment in the Rectory. SEPTEMBER 11, 2016 SEPTEMBER 14 TRIUMPH OF THE CROSS We celebrate our gratitude and love for Jesus through our respect for the cross. The cross was once the greatest symbol of shame. Criminals who died by the sword were spared the branding of crucifixion. Jesus chose to do the most for us to obtain our salvation. He took on the suffering of the cross. With that suffering came the shame. The cross has become the most sacred Christian symbol. When the cross has the image of the suffering Christ on it, that cross is called a crucifix. The crucifix on our bedroom wall and the crucifix or cross around our neck are important. They remind us that Jesus paid a price for us. For centuries relics of the true cross have been cherished by devout Christians. It is believed that Emperor Heraclius recovered pieces of wood from the cross of Jesus in 629. He and his group of pilgrims honored the relics and invited all the people in the area to join them. Even before that time, Christians honored and loved the symbol of the cross. The word cross can also mean the sufferings that come our way. When we accept them lovingly and with patience as Jesus did his cross, we become crossbearers like Jesus. We consider what the symbol of the cross means to us Christians. We might like to say the following short prayer today: We adore you, O Christ, and we praise you, because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world!
