2 CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX FROM THE DESK OF FATHER DERIVAN: Throughout the Church Year, we have beautiful feast days. Of course we think of the beauty of Christmas and the beauty of Easter. But certainly one of the most beautiful feasts of the Church Year is the one we celebrate today, in Latin called Corpus Christi, the Body of Christ. In a sense, every Sunday, indeed every day is a celebration of the Body of Christ, a celebration of the great mystery of the Lord giving His very self to us under the form of bread and wine. But the Church gives us two special feasts of the Holy Eucharist, one Holy Thursday, the night of the Last Supper when Jesus gave His apostles Holy communion for the first time; the other, today s feast, the Feast of Corpus Christi when we pay special honor to Our Lord s presence in the Holy Eucharist. Where would we be without this beautiful Sacrament? Where would we be without Holy Communion? Without Holy communion, we grow spiritually weak; with Holy Communion, we have the strength of Jesus himself. Without Holy Communion, we are easily defeated by our problems; with Holy Communion, we have the strength to go on. Without Holy Communion, we feel very much alone. With Holy Communion, we are united with the Son of God Himself who promised to be with us always even to the end of time. Every time we receive Holy Communion, Jesus is fulfilling that promise to be with us always. Every time we receive Holy Communion, Jesus is in us and we are in Him. Our retired Pope Benedict XI has written about the phrase that we use receiving communion. How often we say precisely that, I am receiving communion at Mass. The words to receive communion, referring to the act of eating the Bread of the Eucharist, are beautiful and very eloquent. In fact, when we do this act we enter into communion with the very life of Jesus, into the dynamism of this life which is given to us and for us. From God, through Jesus, to us: a unique communion is transmitted through the Blessed Eucharist. We are never closer to Jesus than when we receive Holy Communion. But the Pope goes further in his explanation of the term to receive communion. While the Eucharist unites us to Christ, it also opens us to others, makes us members of one another: we are no longer divided but one in him. Eucharistic communion not only unites me to the person I have beside me, but also to our distant brethren in every part of the world. The Pope says that it is no accident that the great saints who served others are also great saints of the Eucharist. Those who recognize Jesus in the sacred Host, recognize him in their suffering brother or sister, in those who hunger and thirst, who are strangers, naked, sick or in prison; and they are attentive to every person, they work in practice for all who are in need, nourished by Holy Communion. The great Mother Theresa of Calcutta, now Blessed Mother Theresa, was invited by a communist country to bring her sisters to serve the poor, but they told her they would not allow her sisters to have a chapel with the Blessed Sacrament present in the tabernacle. Mother Theresa refused to send her sisters. Her reasoning was this: no Eucharist, no strength to do God s work. Without the Eucharist, her sisters could not do their beautiful works of charity. The government gave in. The sisters had their chapel with the Blessed Sacrament and the poor people had the sisters to help them. This Feast of Corpus Christi is the Church s invitation to us to renew our love and devotion to Our Lord in Holy Communion, to appreciate this sacred gift more and more. The sad fact is that many Catholics have lost their wonder and amazement at Jesus coming to us in Holy Communion. They may not pay attention to what is happening at this altar and on every altar throughout the world. They may receive Holy Communion almost without thinking. I remember the story of a non-catholic man who was invited by his Catholic friend to come to church with him. Communion time came and the Catholic explained that we believe Holy Communion is Jesus, His living self given to us. The non-catholic man said, Well, I do not believe that. But if I did, I would crawl on my hands and knees to receive God in your church every Sunday. We can learn from that non-catholic man. We can learn from him that nothing should get in our way of receiving Communion. Nothing should get in our way of loving Holy Communion. Nothing should get in our way of hearing Jesus speak to us every time we receive Him in this beautiful Sacrament, saying to our hearts those beautiful words, Behold I am here. Behold I am with you always even to the end of time. Father Thomas B. Derivan THE RECEPTION OF HOLY COMMUNION On this Feast of Corpus Christi, we do well to remind ourselves about some things connected with the proper reception of Holy Communion: To receive Holy Communion worthily, a Catholic must be free from mortal sin and fast for one hour from food or drink (not water or medicine) before the time of receiving Communion. If a person has mortal sin he or she must go to Confession before receiving Communion. Venial sins are forgiven by our own acts of contrition or penance. Persons who are not Catholics do not receive Communion because they are not in union with the Church. (Nor should Catholics receive Communion in non-catholic churches.) this is not to disparage non-catholic persons who are always welcome to join us in Mass. But it does recognize the fact that Communion means union with the Catholic Church in faith. Catholics may receive Communion either on the tongue or in the hand. If receiving on the tongue, answer Amen when the priest says The Body of Christ and open your mouth slightly. If receiving in the hand, form your hands one over the other like a cross, then answer Amen when the priest says The Body of Christ, then immediately place the Sacred Host in your mouth using the bottom hand. Do not take the host from the priest s fingers; rather, let the priest place the Host in your hand. Do not go back to your seat while holding the Sacred Host; instead, receive the Host immediately by placing it in your mouth. You may, of course, chew the Sacred Host. You should spend some time after Communion in private, personal prayer. Sometimes we need to be reminded that we should avoid distractions when receiving Holy Communion. Our focus should be on the Lord whom we are about to receive. Block out all other thoughts from your mind. Be ready to receive Our Lord with joy. Let us remember that when we receive the Sacred Host, we are receiving the whole Christ, Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity.

3 CORPUS CHRISTI-MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST JUNE 13 ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA This very popular saint was born in Portugal in He was baptized Ferdinand. He received an excellent education from the Augustinian friars and joined the order. When he was twentyfive, his life took an exciting turn. He heard about some Franciscans who had been martyred by the Moors in Morocco. These friars were St. Berard and companions. We celebrate their feast on January 16. From then on, Ferdinand felt a strong desire to die for Christ. He joined the Franciscans. This order was very new. St. Francis himself was still alive. Ferdinand took the name Anthony. He went off to Africa to preach to the Moors. But he soon became so sick that he had to return to Italy. No one in his new religious order realized how brilliant and talented he was. They were not aware of how much education he had received. He never spoke about himself. So the Franciscan superiors assigned him to a quiet friary in Italy. There he washed pots and pans. One day, at a large gathering of priests, Anthony preached a marvelous sermon. From then on, until he died nine years later, St. Anthony preached all over Italy. He was so popular that people even closed their stores to go to hear him. St. Anthony is frequently called on in times of physical as well as spiritual needs. Many miracles have taken place through the intercession of St. Anthony. Large numbers of people have obtained favors by praying to him. That is why he is called the wonder-worker. The statue of St. Anthony shows him with Baby Jesus because Baby Jesus appeared to him. Other pictures show St. Anthony holding a bible. This is because he knew, loved and preached the Word of God so well. In fact, St. Anthony was so well educated especially in Sacred Scripture that Pope Pius XII proclaimed him the Evangelical Doctor, or Doctor of Sacred Scripture. St. Anthony died at Arcella, near Padua, Italy, on June 13, He was thirty-six. He was proclaimed a saint by Pope Gregory IX one year later. Sometimes we want to be recognized for the good things we do or know how to do. It could be that we won t always receive much attention. That is when we can ask St. Anthony to teach us how to be satisfied. We can ask him to help us concentrate on what we can give in this life, not just what we can get. NOVENA PRAYER TO ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA O Holy St. Anthony, gentlest of Saints, your love for God and charity for His creatures, made you worthy, when on earth, to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought, I implore you to obtain for me (request). The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even so, you are the Saint of Miracles. O gentle and loving St. Anthony, whose heart was ever full o human sympathy, whisper my petition into the ears of the Sweet Infant Jesus, who loved to be folded in your arms; and the gratitude of my heart will ever be yours. Amen Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be. ST. ANTHONY SAINT OF MIRACLES O Holy St. Anthony, reach down from heaven and take hold of my hand. Assure me that I am not alone. You are known to possess miraculous powers and to be ever ready to speak for those in trouble. Loving and Gentle St. Anthony, reach down from heaven I implore you and assist me in my hour of need. Obtain for me (mention your request here). Dearest St. Anthony, reach down from heaven and guide me with thy strength. Plead for me in my needs. And teach me to be humbly thankful as you were for all the bountiful blessings I am to receive. Amen The Feast committee will be providing coffee, juice, and other goodies next Sunday, June 14th in front of the Church from 9:30am until 12:15pm. Please make plans to stop by and enjoy! JESUIT MISSION APPEAL: Each year a missionary group is assigned to our parish for the Mission Cooperative Appeal which will be taken up as the second collection at Mass next weekend. This year Father Matthew Cassidy S.J. will be speaking at all of our masses on behalf of the Jesuit missions. The Jesuits are the largest missionary society throughout the world, serving on every continents, bringing the Gospel of Jesus to the ends of the earth. We are happy to welcome Father Cassidy and we ask your generous help in next weekend s second collection for the missions. 4 JUNE 7, ST. THERESA FEAST Plans are underway for our 19th Annual Summer Festival, 19 years of Faith, Family & Fun celebrated in the streets around our church. This year it will be held from July 22nd to the 26th. So tell your family and friends to save the date and make plans for a fun-filled celebration. VOLUNTEERS-Our Feast has been successful in the past because of the help and support of many of our parishioners who volunteer their time and services. This year will be no different. We can really use your help and fellowship. We hope that you will join us as a volunteer this year. As our feast continues to grow, and as we try to initiate new features, we are in need of more and more volunteers and the ideas that they bring with them. If you volunteered in the past we thank you for your efforts and hope that you will be able to help us this year. If you have not helped in the past please give us a try this year. Whatever amount of time you can give will be greatly appreciated. Fellow parishioners will be outside of Church before and after all of the weekend Masses. Stop by to see how you can help. It takes all of us working together to keep our parish the spiritual center of our community. THIS YEAR S THEME-Each year since the inception of the feast we have had a catchphrase that is the underlying theme of that year s feast. The catchphrase is seen on the t-shirts of the volunteers and is the theme around which the religious observances are based. We have chosen as our theme this year Welcome. It is our way of reminding us that as Catholics our doors are open to all. Raffle-As part of our feast we will once again hold our Grand Raffle. 5 WELCOME! BROTHER SAUL We are blessed that Brother Saul is with us during these weeks. As you know, Brother Saul is from Bolivia, completing his first year of Theology at St. Joseph s Seminary in preparation for the priesthood in our Archdiocese. The fact that the Cardinal sends a seminarian to our parish is a great compliment to you our parishioners who have always had great love for priests and seminarians. Brother Saul has quickly become a part of our parish, in our school, in our Bible Class, and in the many other activities of our parish. He will be with us until the beginning of July WEDDING ANNIVERSARY COUPLES: Next Sunday at the 12:15PM Mass we will honor couples who are celebrating their 25th or 50th wedding anniversaries this year. Our parish is honored to do so. May Our Lord continue to bless these couples and all married couples as they witness to Christ s Abiding presence in their marriage. HOME MISSION COLLECTION: The second collection today will be for the Church s Missions among African American and Native American people of our country, commonly called the Home Missions. There are so many places where there is no Catholic presence - no resident priest, no organized Catholic community. Your generosity helps in the training of future priests for these missions and also assists the missionary efforts of priests, religious brothers and sisters, and lay people in serving the Lord and His people in the Southern and Western parts of our country. Thank you for your generosity in today s Home Mission Collection. PRAYER FOR THE AMERICAN MISSIONS God our loving Father, all of Your people are precious in Your eyes, yet we beg You specially to bless the people of our own country with the gift of faith and the hope of salvation. We pray for those who preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ in America s Great cities and little villages, and who bear witness to You in a thousand different places. Give them wisdom and courage, Lord, when they are weary, and joy in their generous ministry. May their message of truth and justice, love and service go forth through all the land, until America is what she strives to be: one nation under God. Through Christ our Lord. Amen Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, Patroness of our country Pray for us. Friday After Corpus Christi Solemnity SACRED HEART Devotion to the heart pierced on Calvary is nearly as old as Christianity, but it has undergone many changes over the centuries. Patristic writers saw in the blood and water issuing from the crucified Lord s side (John 19:34) the fulfillment of his promise to give living water (John 4:13-14; 7:37), the fountain from which the Spirit flows upon the Church. Medieval piety placed less emphasis on Jesus heart as the source of grace and moved toward more personal and sentimental devotion. The public cult celebrated today began in the 17th century, when St. John Eudes pressed for a liturgy (Mass and Office) of the Sacred Heart. Toward the end of that century St. Mary Margaret Alacoque received visions of the Lord exposing his heart and urging public devotion. Her apparitions gave impetus to the devotion and shape to its purpose: to offer reparation for human ingratitude, especially indifference to the Blessed Sacrament. Pius VI saw the devotion as a means of refusing the Jansenist heresy, which rejected the doctrine that Christ died for all. Clement XIII first granted the petition for a liturgical observance to the Polish bishops and the Roman Archconfraternity of the Sacred Heart in Pius IX extended the observance to the universal Church in 1856 and late in the 19th century Leo XIII raised its rank to a feast. Popular devotion includes the nine First Fridays and the enthronement of an image of the Sacred Heart in homes as a sign that love is the Christian way of life. A Jewish midrash on the Exodus account of Moses encounter with God compares the burning bush to the human heart: the only created thing which can burn without being consumed. Yet nothing seems to be harder for human beings to believe in than unconditional love love which is neither deserved nor earned. The Sacred Heart of Jesus, aflame with an unquenchable fire, stands today against lingering traces of Jansenism as a powerful symbol of Christ s unquenchable love for the whole human race. Quote: whoever does not love does not know God. Why? Because God is Love. What more can be said, my Brothers? If one did not find one word in praise of love through this epistle, nor the least word throughout all the other pages of Scripture, and we heard only this one word from the voice of the Spirit of God: Because God is Love, we should seek for nothing more (St. Augustine, Homily on the First Epistle of St. John) ST. THERESA S BLOOD DRIVE Our parish is sponsoring a Blood Drive on Sunday, June 14 from 8:30am to 2:30pm in the school auditorium. All persons from age 17 to 76 who are in good health and who do not have any medication or health situation that would prevent donating blood are invited to participate. Each pint of blood helps three other persons, so therefore this is a great act of charity. Volunteers will be outside of church today to help you to register to donate blood. Please consider doing so.

6 THIS WEEK S ALTAR BREAD IS IN LOVING MEMORY OF JOHN MARRO LOVE, YOUR SISTER ADELINE & RALPH Please continue to share the peace and joy of our faith with others. Someone may hear and accept the invitation from you and return home to worship the Lord with us. So please invite a friend, relative, or neighbor to come with you to Church next Sunday. God will do the rest. Let us share our treasure of faith with others. 2ND TIME: Donald Vincent Orrico & Mary Elizabeth Kelley ST.
