2 CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX FROM THE DESK OF FATHER DERIVAN The readings of today s Mass for this first Sunday of Lent speak about two temptations. The first is the story of Adam and Eve, totally blessed by God in the garden, but tempted by the devil to want more. The devil always does two things: first, he lieshe tells Adam that if he eats of the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden, he will not die, in fact he will become as great as God. The Bible calls the devil the father of lies, and he certainly is. But the second thing the devil always tries to do is to tempt people to want more. It is always that way. We are always tempted to want more than we have and when we give in, when Satan gets the best of us, we realize that we wind up with nothing at all, even as Adam and Eve did. Then there is the second story of temptation, the one we hear in the gospel today. Make no mistakeit is a real temptation. Our Lord Jesus is physically weakened by forty days of fasting. St. Matthew says so simply, He fasted for forty days and forty nights and afterwards he was hungry. We have the same two tactics of the devil in this story as he tried in the story of Adam and Eve. We have Satan s lies and we have his attempt to have Jesus want more. Remember, Our Lord in His human nature was experiencing this temptation. He allowed Himself to experience the temptation of Satan, to show us how evil temptation is and to show us how to conquer it. First, Satan speaks his lies and his lies are a bending of the truth. He tells Jesus to change stones into bread, in other words that his time of fasting should be over. Then he tells Jesus to do something dramatic, to throw himself down from the temple and let the angels catch him, even though Jesus had come not for spectacular displays, but for humble service of His Father. And thirdly Satan says he will give Jesus all the kingdoms of the world if he falls down and worships him. Satan lies in saying the world belongs to him; Jesus says the world belongs to His Father. Satan had tried his first tactic, trying to convince Jesus of his lies. But Satan losesthe Son of God, the Lord of Truth, sends the father of lies on his way, all the while telling us that we must do the same. Satan also tried his second tactic, trying to convince Jesus to want more, more than the Father wantedto satisfy His physical hunger, to do magic tricks and make people believe in Him, and ultimately to deny His Father by worshipping the devil himself. Jesus refuses to give in. He refuses to be someone that He is not. He remains His Father s Son. He remains God s obedient servant. He remains our loving Savior who was ready to die for us. My dear friends, it is no accident that the Church gives us these two stories of temptation at the very beginning of Lent. The Church is teaching us important lessons that we should not give in to the father of lies; that we should not let the devil or anyone or anything else tempt us to want more than the Father wants for us; that we should remember who we arelike Jesus, we are God s obedient sons and daughters, not the playthings of Satan or anyone else. Is Satan real today? Of course he is. Unfortunately he is so real that people think he isn t around. The great Christian author CS Lewis wrote a book called The Screwtape Letters, a fictional account of an older devil giving instructions to his nephew who was just starting out on his devilish ways. And Screwtape says that the greatest sign of the devil s success today is the fact that so many people do not believe he exists. Then he has fertile ground to tempt and succeed. Does Satan exist? Of course he does. We see so much of his work of darknesspeople tempted to abuse children, to abort babies, to be unfaithful to their spouse, to hurt their neighbor. But can the devil force us to do evil? Of course not. The silliest statement in the English language is, The devil made me do it. Adam tried to say that and how foolish he was. The devil can only tempt. He can do nothing else. Only we can give in to his lying temptations. Only we human beings can commit sin. Only we can let the devil win. Lent began just the other day. Unfortunately for many people it probably ended on the day it began. As the ashes were washed away, so too was Lent. Our retired Pope Benedict once said, Each year Lent offers us a providential opportunity to deepen the meaning and value of our Christian lives. Let us make this Lent count. Let us become stronger in our battle against temptation. Let us conquer Satan at his own game. May each day of Lent help us to become strongerstronger in our battle against evil and stronger in our love for Our Lord Jesus Christ. Father Thomas B. Derivan THE CARDINAL S APPEAL 2017 The 2017 Cardinal s Appeal is now underway in our parish and throughout the Archdiocese. The Appeal, as you know, is the major fundraising effort of the Archdiocese to support the pastoral, educational and social programs of the Church of New York. Your help in the Appeal will certainly be thankfully received by Cardinal Dolan as he continues to serve all of us in our Archdiocese. Our aim this year is to ask every parishioner and every family to make an Appeal offering. We ask you to make the special sacrifice of making you Appeal offering. We ask every person to help us reach our goal of $71,500. Let you Appeal offering be your way of thanking God for His gifts to you and or your sharing your gifts with those in need. Your sacrifice in the Appeal will represent your love for the Lord Jesus and for the least of His brethren, particularly during the Season of Lent. You either have received or will receive a special letter from Cardinal Dolan about the Appeal. Your Appeal offering may be placed in the regular collection on Sunday at Mass, brought to the Rectory, or sent directly to the Appeal Office. Please pray for the success of the Appeal, in our parish and throughout our Archdiocese. WEDNESDAY LENTEN MASS: Beginning this Wednesday we will have a special Mass at 6:00PM. This will be followed by the Stations of the Cross and will conclude with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Hopefully this time will be helpful to parishioners coming home from work. Parents of children in our CCD classes may wish to come early for this Mass and Stations. Please note: Stations this year will be on Wednesdays, not Fridays. We will also have Stations of the Cross on Thursdays after the 12:00 Noon Mass with Eucharistic Adoration and Benediction. Come to adore the Lord. REMINDER If you have a Sunday Mass offered for a loved one and are present at the Mass and would like to bring up the Offertory Gifts to the Altar please let one of the ushers know before the Mass begins.

3 FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT LENT AND THE FAMILY Would you like to make Lent more meaningful this year? Well, if your answer is yes, the following are some family activities that will help you to reach that goal and, as a bonus, will bring your family closer together guaranteed. At the beginning of Lent have each family member pick out one day during Lent that will be his or her special day. On their special day each member will be expected to be especially helpful, kind and complimentary to the other members of the family. Donate time to serve the needy in your area. Maybe you could help serve in the food pantry or other charities site or help out at a local food shelf. If this is not possible, make a donation of food or money and, as a family, take it to the food shelf or other charitable organization of your choice. Ask each family member to be responsible for a Prayer Before Meals for one week of Lent. Encourage the members to write a prayer of his or her own. Encourage each member of the family to give up something for Lent. The sacrifice should be something of value but also reasonable. Giving up television for the entire Lenten season would be very difficult for a child but for a week would be achievable. Attend Daily Mass together one day a week and/or make a visit to the Blessed Sacrament. Share a poverty meal of one or two basic foods several times during Lent. Talk about how it must feel to have such a small amount of food for every meal. Figure out how much money was saved by having poverty meals and contribute that amount to the food program at church. Pray the Rosary together. Make sure everyone knows what each decade is about. Scourging at the pillar may take some explanation. Take turns being the leader. Make the Stations of the Cross together. Take turns explaining the action at each station. Good luck to you. May this coming Lent be the most satisfying you ve ever had. MARCH 9 ST. DOMINIC SAVIO St. Dominic Savio was born in northern Italy in One day when he was just four, he disappeared and his mother went to look for him. Dominic was in a quiet corner on his knees, hands joined in prayer. At five, he was an altar boy. When he was seven, he received his First Holy Communion. On that day, Dominic chose a motto for himself. He promised Jesus in his heart, Death, but not sin!. And he prayed every day to be true to his promise. When he was twelve, Dominic went to the school run by St. John Bosco in Turin, Italy. Dominic missed his family, but he was happy to be at Don Bosco s school. Here he would learn everything that he would need to become a priest. That was his great goalto become a priest. He was a good student, but fun, too. He was the kind of person Don Bosco and the students knew they could depend on. Once Dominic broke up a fight between two angry boys. He was armed only with a crucifix. Another time, Dominic noticed a group of bigger boys huddled in a circle. He worked his way through to see what was so interesting and found pornographic magazines. He grabbed them and ripped them up. The boys had never seen Dominic so angry. Oh, what s so wrong with looking at these pictures anyway? one of the boys blurted. If you don t see anything wrong, Dominic said sadly, this is even worse. It means you re used to looking at dirty things! Dominic began to feel sick. He was sent home to his family to get better. But even in his hometown, his health did not improve. He grew worse instead and received the last sacraments. He began to realize that he would not be going back to Don Bosco s school. His great hope of becoming a priest was not to be. Just before he died, he tried to sit up. He said to his father, I am seeing wonderful things. He rested his head on thepillow and closed his eyes. Dominic died in 1857; he was fifteen years old. We can make many wonderful plans and set great goals for our life. But Dominic Savio reminds us that we don t know how long we have on this earth. He never did become a priest, but he, became a saint. That is because he tried his best to live by the motto he set for himself. Death, but not sin. We can ask Dominic to help us live his motto, too.

4 A REFLECTION FROM POPE FRANCIS FOR THIS SUNDAY: Each year, the Gospel of the First Sunday of Lent sets before us the narrative of the temptation of Jesus, when the Holy Spirit, having descended upon him after his Baptism in the Jordan, prompts him to confront Satan openly in the desert for 40 days, before beginning his public ministry. The tempter seeks to divert Jesus from the Father s plan, that is, from the way of sacrifice, of the love that offers itself in expiation, to make him take an easier path, one of success and power. The duel between Jesus and Satan takes place through strong quotations from Sacred Scripture. The devil, in fact, to divert Jesus from the way of the cross, sets before him false messianic hopes: economic wellbeing, indicated by the ability to turn stones into bread; a dramatic and miraculous style, with the idea of throwing himself down from the highest point of the Temple in Jerusalem and being saved by angels and lastly, a shortcut to power and dominion, in exchange for an act of adoration to Satan. These are the three groups of temptations: and we, too, know them well! Jesus decisively rejects all these temptations and reiterates his firm resolve to follow the path set by the Father, without any kind of compromise with sin or worldly logic. Note well how Jesus responds. He does not dialogue with Satan, as Eve had done in the earthly paradise. Jesus is well aware that there can be no dialogue with Satan, for he is cunning. That is why Jesus, instead of engaging in dialogue as Eve had, chooses to take refuge in the Word of God and responds with the power of this Word. Let us remember this: at the moment of temptation, of our temptations, there is no arguing with Satan, our defense must always be the Word of God! And this will save us. In his replies to Satan, the Lord, using the Word of God, reminds us above all that Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God (Mt 4:4; cf. Dt 8:3); and this gives us the strength, sustains us in the struggle against a worldly mindset that would lower man to the level of his primitive needs, causing him to lose hunger for what is true, good and beautiful, the hunger for God and for his love. Furthermore, he recalls that It is written, it is written, You shall not tempt the Lord your God (v. 7), for the way of faith passes also through darkness and doubt, and is nourished by patience and persevering expectation. Lastly, Jesus recalls that It is written. You shall worship the Lord your God and him only you shall serve (v. 10); i.e., we must rid ourselves of idols, of vain things, and build our lives on what is essential. Jesus words will then be borne out in his actions. His absolute fidelity to the Father s plan of love will lead him after about three years to the final reckoning with the prince of this world at the hour of his Passion and Cross, and Jesus will have his final victory, the victory of love! Dear brothers and sisters, the time of Lent is a fitting occasion for us all to make a journey of conversion, by sincerely allowing ourselves to be confronted with this passage of the Gospel. Let us renew the promises of our Baptism: let us renounce Satan and all his works and seductions in order to follow the path of God and arrive at Easter in the joy of the Spirit. March 9, 2014 MARCH 5, 2017 LENT AT ST. THERESA S CHURCH Sunday Masses 7:30AM, 9:00AM (Italian), 10:30AM (Family), 12:15PM, 1:30PM (Spanish) and 5:00PM Weekday Masses 8:00AM and 9:00AM Wednesday at 6:00PM with stations of the Cross (beginning Wednesday, March 8) Thursday at 12:00Noon with Adoration & Stations Confessions Every Saturday from 4:00 to 5:00PM Special Lenten Reconciliation Monday, April 10 with confessions from 3:00 to 9:00PM Stations of the Cross Wednesdays after the 6:00PM Mass Thursdays after the 12Noon Mass Living Stations of the Cross Wednesday, April 5th at 7:00PM Lenten Family Night Friday, March 31st at 7:00PM Scripture Class with Fr. Joseph Wednesdays at 7:30PM in the Rectory Eucharistic Devotion Thursdays after the 12Noon Mass First Fridays, Holy Hour from 7:30 to 8:30PM Fast and Abstinence Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. All Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence. However Cardinal Dolan has dispensed us from the fast on March 17th, The Feast of St. Patrick. Fasting limits a person to one full meal and two lighter meals for those from ages Abstinence means no meat is allowed for those 14 and older. Reasons of health or work can excuse, in which case some other form of sacrifice should be substituted ( acts of charity, additional prayers, etc. A PRAYER FOR LENT Lord, Holy Father, show us what kind of man it is who is hanging for our sakes on the cross, whose suffering causes the rocks themselves to crack and crumble with compassion, whose death brings the dead back to life. Let my soul break apart with compassion for his suffering. Let it be shattered with grief at my sins for which he dies. And finally let it be softened with devoted love for him. St. Bonaventure CONFESSIONS are heard every Saturday from 4:00PM to 5:00PM or by appointment in the Rectory.

5 SACRED JOURNEYSTATIONS OF THE CROSS I. Pilate Condemns Jesus To Death Lord, how strange it is to see you in this position, you who refused to condemn anyone. You defended the outcast, healed the sick, and raised the dead. You, of all people, should have been spared such a fate. Yet, somehow through this paradox you save the world. II. Jesus Takes Up His Cross Lord, it is never easy to take up a cross, yet you do it with amazing courage and grace. We tend to bear our crosses grudgingly, resentfully, even angrily. Show us the way to take up our crosses with the love that gives hope and meaning to life. III. Jesus Falls The First Time Lord, this first fall no doubt taxed you a great deal, but it also spoke of the riches you possess. You were not going to quit on us. You would not quit on truth or love. Like gold tested in the furnace, you would be true to the very end. IV. Jesus Meets His Mother Lord, mothers often seem to meet us in those hard, bitter moments of life. Perhaps Fathers meet us best in triumphthis is my beloved son in whom I am well pleasedbut mothers meet us on the way of the cross. Thank you for the grace of motherhood. V. Simon of Cyrene Helps Jesus Carry The Cross Lord, why is it that we so often have to be asked, even forced, to help those in need? Open our eyes to see those who suffer and give us willing hands to help carry their crosses gladly. May no one ever have to carry a cross alone. VI. Veronica Wipes The Face Of Jesus Lord, you began your ministry in a desert and it seems that you end it in one too. Veronica s simple act is like cool water to quell the heat and dryness of human hatred. May we too be the water of compassion for those who walk the desert of the cross. VII. Jesus Falls The Second Time Lord, when I feel down or defeated, there is often no logic to it. Sometimes, life just gets to be too much for me. By falling, you have shown us how to be human. Show us also how to be Godlike in rising to our feet and going on. VIII. Jesus Meets The Women Of Jerusalem Lord, the smallest hurt sometimes causes Me to close in on myself and shut others out. How remarkable it is that, in the midst of your passion you thought of others before yourself. Grant in the miracle of such a generous heart and spirit. IX. Jesus Falls The Third Time Lord, some onlookers may have rejoiced to see you fall once more. At times we seem to celebrate downfall. We look on like spectators of sport and perhaps some part of us cheers. Help us not to glory in defeat, but to uphold each other toward victory in you. X. Jesus Is Stripped Of His Garments Lord, this moment signifies the totality of your gift to us. Once the soldiers tore off your clothes, all remnants of your divinity appear stripped away and your utter humanity is laid bare. Because of such unreserved love, now it is we who seek to put on Christ. XI. Jesus Is Nailed To The Cross Lord, we witnessed your hands healing the sick and feeding the poor. Perhaps it is human folly at its worst that we could find nothing better to do with those hands than nail them to a cross. By some miracle, you used this very helplessness to touch the world forever. XII. Jesus Dies On The Cross Lord, you who were eternal became finite, giving away you own life so that we might live more fully. Still, we often cling to life rather than giving it away. Teach us the wisdom to lose our lives for your sake so that we may keep them forever. XIII. Jesus Is Taken Down From The Cross Lord, the utter joy of cradling a newborn child is one day matched by the crushing sadness of holding the lifeless body of one you love. Give us the heart of Mary so that we may embrace death as faithfully as life and so be witness to the resurrection. XIV. Jesus Is Laid In The Tomb Lord, we have buried our dead and we know what it is to be entombed ourselvesabandoned, defeated, or violated. By the power of your cross, may the dead find eternal life and may we too come forth from the dark places where we have been buried. (from All Saints Press)
