2 CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX FROM THE DESK OF FR. DERIVAN: Several years ago, on October 16, 2002 our late Pope John Paul II, now Saint John Paul, wrote a beautiful message to the people of the Church. It is called simply The Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Pope wrote beautifully about the Rosary, calling it the school of Mary, saying that in the Rosary we echo the prayer of Mary herself. He said that when we pray the Rosary we look with Mary on to the face of Jesus. To use the Pope s words, No one knows Christ better than Mary; no one can introduce us to a profound knowledge of his mystery better than his Mother. In that special message on the Rosary, Pope John Paul gave us a new set of mysteries. We have had the Joyful, Sorrowful and Glorious Mysteries and to this the Pope added the Luminous Mysteries or the Mysteries of Light, concentrating on gospel stories of His public life. The Pope admits that certainly the whole mystery of Christ is a mystery of light for He is the light of the world. But certain gospel moments show us the light of Jesus shining forth in a special way. One of these Mysteries of light is the gospel we have just heard, the gospel of the wedding feast of Cana where Our Lord performed His first miracle, changing water into wine. What a magnificent gospel! It is a story filled with Jesus and filled with Mary. Our Blessed Mother is concerned about the young married couple when the wine runs out at their wedding feast. And all Mary does is report the fact to Jesus, They have no more wine. No explanation, nor long story, just the fact. And then she tells the waiters, Do whatever he tells you. Pope John Paul says that in this story Mary is like the teacher, teaching the waiters and teaching us to Do whatever Jesus tells you. Dear friends, Our Blessed Mother Mary is still telling us to Do whatever Jesus tells you. Let me mention three points about today s gospel, these points in which Mary is helping us to follow Jesus her Son. The first is the obvious one about this gospel. This gospel is about marriage and Mary is inviting us to do what Jesus wants in appreciating the dignity and beauty of Christian marriage. To say the least, marriage has suffered in our society today. Our media certainly do not portray marriage as the holy union of husband and wife, a union that is, as the Church teaches, faithful, fruitful and forever. Our Blessed Mother Mary today is inviting married couples and couples who are preparing for marriage to do what Jesus asks of them, to make their home a place in which Jesus is always the hidden guest, strengthening the married couple by His love, strengthening the family by His grace. The second point from the gospel: how much both Mary and Jesus value that young couple whose wedding feast they were celebrating. We do not know the names of that husband and wife at Cana, but we do know that each of them, like each of us, was precious in the eyes of Jesus and of His Mother. The wedding feast of Cana is called by Pope John Paul a mystery of light; we could also call it a mystery of life. It reminds us that every person s life is precious, that the Lord Jesus is concerned with every person s need, whether that need was the need of that bridal couple in Cana or the much more important need of an unborn baby s right to life. This week we observe sadly the anniversary of the tragic Supreme Court decision allowing abortion on demand in our country. In those forty years, over fifty million children have been denied the most basic of human rights, the right to be born. As we hear the gospel today, Our Blessed Mother Mary is telling us to do whatever Jesus tells us to protect unborn life and to help others to appreciate the sanctity of every human life. And a final thought from the gospel: When Mary says to us, Do whatever Jesus tells you, she is encouraging us to do what Jesus wants us to do in love and service of others, even as He loved and served the married couple at Cana of Galilee. This week we observe the feast of St. Marianne Cope. You will remember that she was canonized along with St. Kateri Tekakwitha. Both of them are our latest American saints. St. Marianne lived here in New York State, served as a hospital administrator in Syracuse, then heard the call to serve the leper people of the Hawaiian island of Molokai. She did what Jesus told her, serving those poor people in His name. Her way of looking at her life was simple. She said this, My heart bled for these people and I was anxious and hungry to help put a little more sunshine into their dreary lives. As we listen to this gospel today, just as the Lord Jesus put sunshine into the hearts of that married couple by His miracle, may we do the same by our simple acts of charity to those who need our love and care. We do not know what happened to that married couple at Cana. Hopefully they filled their lives with love of marriage, love of life and love of others. May we do the same. May we open our hearts to Jesus miracles of love shown to us each day and may Mary His Mother keep on telling us her children, Do whatever Jesus tells you. Father Thomas B. Derivan The week extending from January 18th to January 25th is observed each year as a special week of Prayer for Unity in the Church. Started by the Graymoor Friars, this Week of Prayer reminds us of the necessity to pray for the unity of Christ s Church. Sadly we see so many divisions with so many different church groups. We must pray, in the words of Our Lord, that all may be one. Let us make this our particular intention during Church Unity Week. The Exchange Club of Yonkers is having their Annual One Nation Under God Dinner Gala, honoring Fr. Robert Grippo, on Friday April 29th at the VIP Country Club in New Rochelle, NY. Cocktails begin at 6:30PM. Dinner tickets are $95.00 per person. For more information please call Ann Muro

3 SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME A SAD ANNIVERSARY This Friday, January 22nd, is the 43rd anniversary of the tragic Supreme Court decision Roe vs. Wade allowing abortion on demand in our country. Since then millions of unborn children have been denied the most basic of human rights the right to be born. On Friday thousands of people of all faiths and even no faith will join in the annual March for Life in Washington, affirming that every child s life is sacred. I encourage you on that day to come to Mass or to say your rosary praying that one day soon the life of the unborn will be respected and cherished. Our choice of words often affects the way we think. Those who favor abortion, for instance, have changed certain words and this has affected many people s thinking: Instead of the word abortion, those who favor this call it simply termination of a pregnancy. That sounds so much better! It does not really sound like what it is-the actual taking of the life of an unborn child. Termination is not as emotionally charged as abortion or the taking of an unborn life. But it is! To terminate a life is to end it. To terminate a life is to make a choice for death, not life. Those who favor abortion speak of the fetus, not the unborn child. While of course fetus is a technical scientific term and certainly has its place in the discussion, it seems far more distant than the term unborn child. Yet that is what this fetus is! It-or more appropriately, he or she-is an unborn child, with all the physical and genetic makeup that the child will have as an adult. Science has helped us to understand the beautiful complexity of human development, from the fertilized ovum to the born child-one continuous path of growth. Do not let the word fetus confuse you. This is a child, a human being, one of us. It is nothing more and certainly nothing less. Pro-abortionists speak of a the right to choose and a woman s right to her own body. Those terms sound positive. However, they are not. The right to choose should mean the right to make correct choices, not just any choice to suit one s pleasure. We do not say that a person who intends to inflict harm on another person has a right to choose. That would be foolish. The right to choose, in this case the woman s choice to take the life of her unborn child, prevents someone else having a choice, namely the unborn child. It is the denial of the most basic civil right of all, the right to be born. A woman s right to her own body does not allow her or anyone else - doctor, nurse, counselor, anyone-to deny the right of the unborn child to his or her body. The right of one (namely the mother) must not deny the right of the other (namely the unborn child). Finally, those in favor of abortion declare that people who favor the right to life are imposing their viewpoints on others. It should really be the other way around-pro-abortionists are imposing their viewpoint, particularly on the unborn child, and this results in the tragic loss of that unborn child s life. Far from imposing our viewpoint, we are defending the right of the child to be born. If someone were attacking a loved one of ours, someone would be foolish to say that we were imposing our viewpoint if we tried to stop them. So too is it true in the matter of legalized abortion. The defense of life is an obligation. And not to defend life is to allow the greatest imposition of all-imposing death on a child who has the Right to life. It is good for us to reflect on these things as we observe the tragic Roe vs. Wade anniversary. Let us not fall into the trap of becoming comfortable with legalized abortion. Let us call it what it is-the taking of unborn life. Let us be careful in our conversations with others that we use the right language, not the words and phrases that pro-abortionist would like us to use. Let us never give up until the day comes when the right to life of every unborn child will be respected once again in our country, which speaks of the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for all. May that include all the unborn. Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the unborn, pray for us. Father Thomas B. Derivan RESPECT FOR LIFE PRAYER God of life and love, you created us in your image and sent your Son to bring us life. Instill in us a respect for all life, from conception to natural death. Empower us to work for justice for the poor. Nourish us that we may bring food to the hungry. Inspire us to cherish the fragile life of the unborn. Strengthen us to bring comfort to the chronically ill. Teach us to treat the aging with dignity and respect. Bring us one day into the glory of everlasting life. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen 2016 ST. THERESA FEAST The next meeting of the Feast Committee will be held on Tuesday, January 19th at 7:30PM in the large rectory meeting room. This year will be our 20th event. Our feast committee wants it to be a special one. To do so they need the support of many of our parishioners like yourself. Your thoughts, ideas, and help are the things that are necessary to make our 20th Annual Feast one that our parishioners and friends will remember for a long time. Please attend this special meeting to see how you can help.

4 JANUARY 17, 2016 ATTENTION ALUMNI AND FORMER PARISHIONERS! We are in the process of updating our list of alumni of St. Theresa s School and former parishioners of our parish. We want them to know about the good things that are going on at our parish and our school. We ask you to contact family members or friends to ask them to help us update our list. They may do so in any of the following ways: Filling out the form below and sending it to the Rectory (or asking you to drop it by); Calling the Rectory to update the information ing the information found below. Thank you for your help with this. UPDATE OF INFORMATION FOR ALUMNI/FORMER PARISHIONERS Name If alumnus, year Address Telephone DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. HOLIDAY: SCHOOL SPONSORSHIPS We are making this appeal to parishioners (past and present), alumni and friends of St. Theresa s Parish. We are having a School Sponsorship Program in our school. In this, the sponsor offers to help pay a needy student s tuition in whole or in part. Students are selected by the pastor and the principal particularly because of some unforeseen circumstance that has happened to the family where the child would otherwise not be able to continue in our school. The sponsorship makes it possible for a child to continue to benefit from a good Catholic education at St. Theresa s School. Recipients are chosen by the principal and the pastor according to need. We ask you to consider becoming a School Sponsor. Full Sponsorship is $5,100 and partial is $2,550. If you are interested, please contact our principal Mrs. Fanelli at or Father Derivan at or drop into our School Office. Your sponsorship makes a difference! REMINDER If you have a Sunday Mass offered for a loved one and are present at the Mass and would like to bring up the Offertory Gifts to the Altar, please let one of the ushers know before the Mass begins. Tomorrow we observe the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We celebrate his commitment to the advancement of respect for human rights and dignity and his commitment to non-violence. How much we need to remember his legacy today. We as Catholics must be continually reminded of our commitment to racial harmony and mutual respect. Likewise we must remember Dr. King s commitment to non-violence. Our country and our world have suffered so much from violence and terrorism. Pray that violence will be overcome by mutual respect. Pray that even those who turn to violence will have a change of heart and a change of their violent ways. May the example of Dr. King help us to live in respect for one another as God s children. MANY THANKS We are most grateful to all our wonderful parishioners who have sacrificed so generously by increasing their weekly Sunday Contributions. Please know that your weekly increase is for the betterment of St. Theresa Parish, for the building up and improvement of our parish. We are most grateful to all of you who have helped to make a difference in our community. Please continue to help us in order to keep St. Theresa Parish the vital, growing parish that it is.

5 JANUARY 23 ST. MARIANNE COPE ( ) Though leprosy scared off most people in 19th-century Hawaii, that disease sparked great generosity in the woman who came to be known as Mother Marianne of Molokai. Her courage helped tremendously to improve the lives of its victims in Hawaii, a territory annexed to the United States during her lifetime (1898). Mother Marianne s generosity and courage were celebrated at her May 14, 2005 beatification in Rome. She was a woman who spoke the language of truth and love to the world, said Cardinal Martins, who presided at the beatification Mass in St. Peter s Basilica, called her life a wonderful work of divine grace. Speaking of her special love for persons suffering from leprosy, he said, She saw in them the suffering face of Jesus. Like the Good Samaritan, she became their mother. On January 23, 1838, a daughter was born to Peter and Barbra Cope of Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany. The girl was named after her mother. Two years later the Cope family immigrated to the United States and settled in Utica, New York. Young Barbara worked in a factory until August 1862, when she went to the Sisters of the Third Order of Saint Francis in Syracuse, New York. After profession in November of the next year, she began teaching at Assumption parish school. Marianne held the post of superior in several places and was twice the novice mistress of her congregation. A natural leader, these different times she was superior of St. Joseph s Hospital in Syracuse, where she learned much that would be useful during her years in Hawaii. Elected provincial in 1877, Mother Marianne was unanimously re-elected in Two years later the Hawaiian government was searching for someone to run the Kakaako Receiving Station for people suspected of having leprosy. More than 50 religious communities in the United States and Canada were asked. When the request was put to the Syracuse sisters, 35 of them volunteered immediately. On October 22, 1883, Mother Marianne and six other sisters left for Hawaii where they took charge of the Kakaako Receiving Station outside Honolulu; on the island of Maui they also opened a hospital and a school for girls. In 1888, Mother Marianne and two sisters went to Molokai to open a home for unprotected women and girls there. The Hawaiian government was quite hesitant to send women for this difficult assignment; they need not have worried about Mother Marianne! On Molokai she took charge of the home that St. Damien DeVeuster (d.1889) had established for men and boys. Mother Marianne changed life on Molokai by introducing cleanliness, pride and fun to the colony. Bright scarves and pretty dresses for the women were part of her approach. Awarded the Royal Order of Kapiolani by the Hawaiian government and celebrated in a poem by Robert Louis Stevenson, Mother Marianne continued her work faithfully. Her sisters have attracted vocations among the Hawaiian people and still work on Molokai. Mother Marianne died on August 9, 1918 and was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on October 21, The government authorities were reluctant to allow Mother Marianne to be a mother on Molokai. Thirty years of dedication proved their fears unfounded. God grants gifts regardless of human short-sightedness and allows those gifts to flower for the sake of the kingdom. Soon after Mother Marianne died, Mrs. John F. Bowler wrote in the Honolulu Advertiser. Seldom has the opportunity come to a woman to devote every hour of 30 years to the mothering of people isolated by law from the rest of the world. She risked her own life in all that time, faced everything with unflinching courage and smiled sweetly through it all.
