2 CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX FROM THE DESK OF FATHER DERIVAN The Church gives us many beautiful feasts to celebrate. But today s feast is different. It was given not just by a Pope or other Church authority. It was given by the Lord Himself to Saint Faustina Kowalska when He appeared to her in a series of visions in the 1930 s. Our Lord asked her to become the appeared to her in a series of visions in the 1930 s. Our Lord asked her to become the apostle of His Divine Mercy, a Mercy that flows forth from His pierced heart, as we see in the beautiful Divine Mercy image portrayed in our church. Devotion to the Divine Mercy has become one of the most popular devotions in the Church. If you have not incorporated it into your life, the Lord is inviting you to do so today, reminding us that His mercy knows no bounds, His mercy extends to every personthe greatest saint and the greatest sinner. Our Holy Father Pope Francis has made the proclamation of God s mercy the hallmark of his ministry as Pope. On this feast of Divine Mercy, the Pope used today s gospel to explain the tremendous mercy of Jesus. The Pope drew attention to two special parts of the gospel passage. The first one is this. St. John writes, Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book. The Pope explains, The Gospel is the book of God s mercy, to be read and reread, because everything that Jesus said and did is an expression of the Father s mercy. Not everything, however, was written down; the Gospel of mercy remains an open book, in which the signs of Christ s disciples concrete acts of love and the best witness to mercy continue to be written. We are all called to become living writers of the Gospel, heralds of the Good News to all men and women of today. We do this by practicing the corporal and spiritual works of mercy, which are the hallmarks of the Christian life. But sadly so many people do not turn to the mercy of Jesus. And why? The Pope draws our attention to a second part of the gospel of todayand that is the fear of the disciples, who gathered behind closed doors. Sadly so many people live in fear and close their hearts, even to the mercy of Jesus. Not me, they say. My sins are too many and too long. How can Jesus possibly show mercy to me? Our Lord on this Divine Mercy Sunday wants those people to know that they are wronghis mercy is especially extended to them. But He needs us to help them overcome fear and open their hearts to His merciful love. In those beautiful words, Pope Francis is asking us to be apostles of mercy, just as the Lord Himself asked St. Faustina to be. In our own lives, in our families, in our relationships with friends and neighbors and coworkers, we are to be the apostles of Jesus mercy helping them to understand, as the psalm says, His mercy endures forever. The Pope says, Christ, who for love entered through doors barred by sin, death and the powers of hell, wants to enter into each one of us to break open the locked doors of our hearts. We see before us a humanity that is often wounded and fearful, a humanity that bears the scars of pain and uncertainty. Being apostles of mercy means touching and soothing the wounds that today afflict the bodies and souls of many of our brothers and sisters. Sister Faustina is rightfully recognized as the great apostle of the Divine Mercy. But I think we can say that we now have another apostle of mercy and that is our beloved Holy Father. He says that from the moment he was elected Pope, he was determined to bring the message of mercy to the world. Let me give you again his beautiful words, Truly, God s mercy is forever; it never ends, it never runs out, it never gives up when faced with closed doors, and it never tires. In this forever we find strength in moments of trial and weakness because we are sure that God does not abandon us. He remains with us forever. Let us give thanks for so great a love, which we find impossible to grasp; it is immense! Let us pray for the grace to never grow tired of drawing from the well of the Father s mercy and bringing it to the world. Let us ask that we too may be merciful, to spread the power of the Gospel everywhere, and thus to write those pages of the Gospel which John the Apostle did not write. For truly His mercy endures forever. Father Thomas B. Derivan SPECIAL THANKS FOR HOLY WEEK AND EASTER: We thank all who have made our celebration of Holy Week and Easter so beautiful: of course our priests, Father Joseph, Father Charles, Father Imbelli and Father Gomez who is observing his first Holy Week and Easter here; our Altar Society and ladies; committee for the beautiful decoration of the sanctuary; our ushers, Eucharistic Ministers and lectors, and our many Altar Servers. We thank our Leader of Song Donna Liello and our Children s Choir Director Gina Gentile. And most of all thank you, our faithful parishioners, for participating so beautifully and reverently in all our Holy Week services and making Easter such a beautiful celebration of the Resurrection of Our Lord. May the Risen Lord continue to guide you and give you his Easter grace now and always. Also this same entrance will be opened every weekday until 9:30AM. 3 DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY THE DIVINE MERCY MESSAGE AND DEVOTION: ABC The message of The Divine Mercy is simple. It is that God loves us all of us. And, He wants us to recognize that His mercy is greater than our sins, so that we will call upon Him with trust, receive His mercy, and let it flow through us to others. Thus, all will come to share His joy. The Divine Mercy message is one we can call to mind simply by remembering ABC: A Ask for His Mercy. God wants us to approach Him in prayer constantly, repenting of our sins and asking Him to pour His mercy out upon us and upon the whole world. B Be merciful. God wants us to receive His mercy and let it flow through us to others. He wants us to extend love and forgiveness to others just as He does to us. C Completely trust in Jesus. God wants us to know that the graces of His mercy are dependent upon our trust. The more we trust in Jesus, the more we will receive. This message and devotion to Jesus as The Divine Mercy is based on the writings of Saint Faustina Kowalska, an uneducated Polish nun who, in obedience to her spiritual director, wrote a diary of about 600 pages recording the revelations she received about God s mercy. Even before her death in 1938, the devotion to The Divine Mercy had begun to spread. Today as we celebrate the Feast of the Divine Mercy, make it your aim each day to spend time to learn more about the mercy of God, to learn to trust in Jesus, and to live your life as merciful to others, as Christ is merciful to you. (From the Marians of the Immaculate Conception) A PRAYER FOR DIVINE MERCY O Greatly Merciful God, Infinite Goodness, today all mankind calls out from the abyss of its misery to Your mercy to Your compassion, O God; and it is with its mighty voice of misery that it cries out. Gracious God, do not reject the prayer of this earth s exiles! O Lord, Goodness beyond our understanding, Who are acquainted with our misery through and through, and know that by our own power we cannot ascend to You, we implore You: anticipate us with Your grace and keep on increasing Your mercy in us, that we may faithfully do Your holy will all through our life and at death s hour. Let the omnipotence of Your mercy shield us from the darts of our salvation s enemies, that we may with confidence, as Your children, await Your final comingthat day known to You alone. And we expect to obtain everything promised us by Jesus in spite of all our wretchedness. For Jesus is our Hope: Through His merciful Heart as through an open gate, we pass through to heaven. American Turners New York 748 Clarence Avenue Bronx, NY APRIL 8, 2018 FEAST OF DIVINE MERCY During the course of Jesus revelations to Saint Faustina on the Divine Mercy He asked on numerous occasions that a feast day be dedicated to the Divine Mercy and that this feast be celebrated on the Sunday after Easter. This Feast was granted to the Universal Church by Pope John Paul II on the occasion of the canonization of Sr. Faustina on 30th of April, This Sunday is now called Divine Mercy Sunday and it is an invitation to the Christian world to face, with confidence in divine benevolence, the difficulties and trials that mankind will experience in the years to come. Concerning the Feast of Mercy Jesus said: Whoever approaches the Fountain of Life on this day will be granted complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. (Diary 300). This Feast emerged from the very depths of My mercy, and it is confirmed in the vast depths of my tender mercies. (Diary 420). On one occasion, St Faustina heard these words: My daughter, tell the whole world about My Inconceivable mercy. I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fount of My mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. On that day all the divine floodgates through which grace flow are opened. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet. My mercy is so great that no mind, be it of man or of angel, will be able to fathom it throughout all eternity. Everything that exists has come forth from the very depths of My most tender mercy. Every soul in its relation to Me will contemplate My love and mercy throughout eternity. The Feast of Mercy emerged from My very depths of tenderness. It is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My Mercy. (Diary 699). Yes, the first Sunday after Easter is the Feast of Mercy, but there must also be deeds of mercy, which are to arise out of love for Me. Your are to show mercy to our neighbors always and everywhere. Your must not shrink form this or try to absolve yourself from it. (Diary 742)

5 ST. MARIA FAUSTINA KOWALSKA ( ) St. Faustina s name is forever linked to the annual feast of the Divine Mercy (celebrated on the Second Sunday of Easter), the Divine Mercy chaplet and the Divine Mercy prayer recited each day at 3:00PM by many people. Born in what is now westcentral Poland (part of Germany before World War I), Helena Kowalska was the third of 10 children. She worked as a housekeeper in three cities before joining the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy in She worked as a cook, gardener and porter in three of their houses. In addition to carrying out her work faithfully, generously serving the needs of the sisters and the local people, she also had a deep interior life. This included receiving revelations from the Lord Jesus, messages that she recorded in her diary at the request of Christ and of her confessors. At a time when some Catholics had an image of God as such a strict judge that they might be tempted to despair about the possibility of being forgiven, Jesus chose to emphasize his mercy and forgiveness for sins acknowledged and confessed. I do not want to punish aching mankind, he once told St. Faustina, but I desire to heal it, pressing it to my merciful heart (Diary 1588). The two rays emanating from Christ s heart, she said, represent the blood and water poured out after Jesus death (John 19:34). Because Sister Maria Faustina knew that the revelations she had already received did not constitute holiness itself, she wrote in her diary: Neither graces, nor revelations, nor raptures, nor gifts granted to a soul make it perfect, but rather the intimate union of the soul with God. These gifts are merely ornaments of the soul, but constitute neither its essence nor its perfection. My sanctity and perfection consist in the close union of my will with the will of God (Diary 1107). Sister Maria Faustina died of tuberculosis in Krakow, Poland, on October 5, Pope John Paul II beatified her in 1993 and canonized her seven years later. Her feast day is October 5th. Devotion to God s Divine Mercy bears some resemblance to devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In both cases, sinners are encouraged not to despair, not to doubt God s willingness to forgive them if they repent. As Psalm 136 says in each of its 26 verses, God s love [mercy] endures forever. Four years after Faustina s beatification, John Paul II visited the Sanctuary of Divine Mercy at Lagiewniki (near Krakow) and addressed members of her congregation. He said: The message of Divine Mercy has always been very close and precious to me. It is as though history has written it in the tragic experience of World War II. In those difficult years, this message was a particular support and an inexhaustible source of hope, not only for those living in Krakow, but for the entire nation. This was also my personal experience, which I carried with me to the See of Peter and which, in a certain sense, forms the image of this pontificate. I thank divine providence because I was able to contribute personally to carrying out Christ s will, by instituting the feast of Divine Mercy. Here, close to the remains of Blessed Faustina, I thank God for the gift of her beatification. I pray unceasingly that God may have mercy on us and on the whole world (Quote from the Chaplet of Divine Mercy). PRAYER OF ST. FAUSTINA O Lord, I want to be completely transformed into Your mercy and to be Your living reflection, O Lord. May the greatest of all divine attributes, that of Your unfathomable mercy, pass through my heart and soul to my neighbor. Help me, O Lord, that my eyes may be merciful, so that I may never suspect or judge from appearances, but look for what is beautiful in my neighbors souls and come to their rescue. Help me, that my ears may be merciful, so that I may give heed to my neighbors needs and not be indifferent to their pains and sorrows. Help me, O Lord, that my tongue may be merciful, so that I should never speak negatively of my neighbor, but have a word of comfort and forgiveness for all. Help me, O Lord, that my hands may be merciful and filled with good deeds, so that I may do only good to my neighbors and take upon myself the more difficult and toilsome tasks. Help me, that my feet may be merciful, so that I may hurry to assist my neighbor, overcoming my own fatigue and weariness. My true rest is in the service of my neighbor. Help me, O Lord, that my heart may be merciful so that I myself may feel all the sufferings of my neighbor. I will be sincere even with those who, I know, will abuse my kindness. And I will lock myself up in the most merciful Heart of Jesus. May Your mercy, O Lord, rest upon me. O my Jesus, transform me into Yourself, for you can do all things.
