2 CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX FROM THE DESK OF FATHER DERIVAN: Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Dear friends, those are the words of the time-honored hymn that we sing this week. They remind us of the suffering of Jesus. They remind us that He was crucified for our sins. They remind us that, as the hymn goes on, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble, when we remember Jesus dying for us. But those words remind us of something else, something we should keep in mind during this Holy Week. In a sense, we can answer the question Were you there when they crucified my Lord? by saying Yes, I was there or even more appropriately Yes, I am there. Of course, we were not there physically in Jerusalem two thousand years ago for the first Holy Week. But in a deeper sense, we are there with Him this Holy Week. Or at least we should be. We should put ourselves spiritually in the great events of this week. We should put ourselves into today, Palm Sunday. We should spiritually be there when the people of Jerusalem acclaimed Jesus as their King. We should make Jesus more and more the King of our lives. We should be with Him on Palm Sunday. We should put ourselves into Holy Thursday. Spiritually we should sit with the Lord and His apostles as He gave them Holy Communion, His very self, for the first time. We should be with Him on Holy Thursday. We should put ourselves into Good Friday. We should be with Our Lord as He is arrested, condemned to death, sent forth to be crucified. We should be with Our Blessed Mother Mary and St. Veronica and Simon of Cyrene and the women of Jerusalem, all of whom accompanied Him in His suffering. We should be on the hill of Calvary with Mary and Mary Magdalene and St. John as He offered His life on the Cross for us. We should hear His words of forgiveness, spoken to the Good Thief and the soldiers - and even to us. We should be with the Lord Jesus on Good Friday. We should put ourselves into Holy Saturday. We should join those good people who mourned the death of their Lord, but we should also be watching and waiting, knowing that the Resurrection of the Lord is coming. We should be with the Lord Jesus on Holy Saturday. And then we should put ourselves into the Easter Vigil Mass on Holy Saturday night and into Easter itself. We should be spiritually there as the Lord conquers sin and death itself, as He rises to new life and invites us to rise with Him too. We should be with the Lord Jesus in His Easter glory. We can truly answer the question, Were you there? by saying during this week, Yes, Lord, I am here. Make your best effort to join in these holy days, the days of our salvation. Make effort to join in our solemn Masses and other services. Make this a special week of being with Jesus. In this Year of Mercy especially, invite others to join you in our church. Make this a Holy Week for them too, especially if they have been away from the Lord or His Church. May the Lord bless you during this Holy Week. May you truly be here with Jesus Our Lord. 3 PALM SUNDAY LENTEN RECONCILIATION MONDAY, MONDAY, MARCH 21ST This Monday, March 21, is Lenten Reconciliation Monday throughout our Archdiocese. At the request of Cardinal Dolan, every church will have the opportunity for confession tomorrow from 3:00PM to 9:00PM. Our church will be open tomorrow at these hours and our priests will be available for individual confessions. If you know someone who has been away from Confession or you have been hesitant about coming to Confession yourself, this is a beautiful opportunity to do so. Let us always remember that the Lord Jesus, our Good Shepherd, is waiting for each of us with forgiving love. Some material on going to Confession is found below: SOME POINTS FOR ADULTS PREPARING FOR THE SACRAMENT OF PENANCE (CONFESSION) In His goodness, Our Lord has given us the Sacrament of Penance (also called Confession or Reconciliation). The beautiful thing about confession is that we know our sins are forgiven. We have Jesus word to His apostles, Whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven. Whatever sins we have, big or small, are forgiven if we are truly sorry. Please keep that in mind as you prepare for Confession. If you are a little unclear about how to go to confession, do not worry. Remember, the priest is there to help you. Remember even more, Jesus is there to forgive you. 1. Make the Sign of the Cross and say, Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. It has been...since my last Confession. (Say how long it has been). If this is your first time coming to Confession, simply say, This is my first Confession. 2. Simply confess your major sins (mortal sins, like missing Mass deliberately, being unfaithful in marriage, using drugs, seriously hurting a person, having an abortion, etc.) and any other lesser sins (venial sins like loss of patience, anger, hatred, prejudice, etc.) which you want the Lord to help you with. 3. Listen to the priest as he gives you a penance (prayers to say or something to do). 4. Recite an Act of Contrition (see below). Then listen to the priest s prayer of forgiveness (absolution). thank the priest and make the Sign of the Cross before you leave the confessional. You may wish to use one of the following as an Act of Contrition. You may wish to take this into the confessional with you. O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended you and I detest all my sins because of your just punishment, but most of all because they offend you, my God, who are all-good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve with the help of your grace to sin no more and to avoid the near occasions of sin. Amen OR My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with Your help, to do penance, to sin no more and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and dies for us. In His name, my God, have mercy. Amen OR Lord Jesus Christ, be merciful to me, a sinner. OR The Our Father is also an Act of Contrition. A few final reminders: 1. In some confessionals, you may either go behind the screen or face-to-face. This is marked outside. There is a light in the confessional. You must wait until the priest opens the window, since he is hearing the Confession of the person on the other side. While you are waiting, thank God for helping you come to Confession. 2. If you have any trouble, just ask the priest to help you. He will be glad to do so. 3. Keep your confession short and to the point. There is no need to go into long explanations. 4. If you have a question, feel free to ask the priest. 5. Speak softly-loud enough for the priest to hear you, but not loud enough for anyone else to hear you. 6. Remember the priest is bound by the seal of confession not to mention anything you say in Confession. 7. After Confession, if the priest gave you prayers to say, do so. Thank God also in your own words by the gift of His forgiveness in this beautiful sacrament. 8. Remember that your sins are forgiven. Do not think about them again. They are removed by God s grace. Think ahead to how you can live a better Christian life. SUPPORT OUR ADVERTISERS - Please support our advertisers; it is their support that makes this bulletin possible, and when you visit them, please let them know that you read their advertisement in St. Theresa s bulletin. REMINDER If you have a Sunday Mass offered for a loved one and are present at the Mass and would like to bring up the Offertory Gifts to the Altar, please let one of the ushers know before the Mass begins.

4 MARCH 20, 2016 MEDITATIONS ON THE TRIDUUM The Easter Triduum, marking the days of Jesus passion and resurrection, is the most important time of the church year. It begins with the evening Mass of Holy Thursday, reaches its high point in the Easter Vigil, and closes on Easter Sunday evening. Prepared by the days of Lent, Christians celebrate on these holiest of days the saving work God has accomplished in Christ. From the events remembered these days, so sorrowful and so joyful, the church learns the deepest lessons. In rites and words the mysteries of Jesus final hours are with us again, his passion, his cruel suffering, his rising from the dead. And we discover the answer to age-old questions: Does God love us? Is God merciful? Does God care for us? We have only to look and learn from Jesus Christ. These are days for fixing our eyes on the holy mystery of his cross and filling our ears with the words of his gospel. Nowhere else does God s love appear so vividly. In the love Christ showed for a sinful world we find the beginning of our church, the source of our sacraments, the key to understanding the human story, and our hope for eternal life. Holy Thursday - The Easter Triduum begins with Mass on Holy Thursday evening, when Jesus sacramentally anticipated the gift he would make of himself on the cross. His command to serve others is dramatically recalled this night in the ceremony of the washing of the feet, which he performed in the supper room for his disciples. Like the Paschal lamb, killed and eaten by the people, according to the Old Testament account read from Exodus this evening, he is a sign of God s salvation. Good Friday - The Good Friday rites center around the reading of the Passion of Jesus. With simple dignity that story is retold, followed by prayers for the entire world, for this powerful mystery brings blessings to the world. According to ancient tradition, an image or relic of the cross is venerated this day, and the sacrament of Christ s love for his church is received. It is a day of fasting and quiet mourning. The Easter Vigil - The Easter Vigil is the high point of the Easter Triduum celebrating the passion and resurrection of Jesus. With a rich display of symbols, rites and readings, the church in worship expresses her faith in the mystery that brings her into being. Light Conquers Darkness - The vigil opens with a service of light. Like the Jewish Passover, our Easter celebration coincides with the beginning of spring, when the sun offers new warmth and earth is ready to flower again. Our words lent (from the Middle-English word for spring, lengthening days ) and Easter (possibly Germanic or Anglo-Saxon in origin, signifying the east, the rising sun ) point to the long tradition of seeing this holy mystery through signs of the natural world. The lighting of the fire and the Easter candle go back to rites that long preceded Christianity. The candle, carried with loving reverence and lyrically praised in word and song, is a sign of Christ, the light of the world, and celebrates the victory of light over darkness that humanity has ever longed for. God s Love Endures Forever a series of readings recalls the great interventions of God in history, from creation to the redemption of Israel from Egypt, and ends with the story of Jesus resurrection. The great alleluia proclaims with quiet joy the triumph of God s Son. Those preparing for Baptism then receive the sacraments of initiation. The blessed water sprinkled over others signifies the blessing of new life. Rejoice! This night says as it brings before us the deepest symbols of our hopes and fears. the darkness, sign of evil and death, has been overcome by light. A lamp, a candle has been lit; a fire is enkindled in our hearts; a nourishing water flows through our lives; a baptism destroys what is unclean and brings to life again. Rejoice! This night says to all creation. The Word who made all things, as a new Adam, freshly proclaims God s promise of life. All creation celebrates God s love. by Victor Hoagland, C.P. Feast Committee News Students Grants Each and every year the Feast Committee provides grants totaling $1,000 to parish students who best demonstrate the qualities of the heart of our parish - its many volunteers and helpers. This year we have decided to open up the nomination process of these awards to the adults in our community. You are able to recommend a child of our Parish in grades 6th thru 8th that you feel goes above and beyond when it comes to being of service to others. You will fill out a short form indicating why the child merits consideration. The child will be asked to write an essay telling us how service to others has made me a better person. Copies of the nomination form can be found in the back of the Church or on the parish website at: Nominations forms and essays must be submitted to the rectory by April 10th, the winners will be presented at a 10:30 Sunday Mass shortly thereafter. Design the Feast T-Shirt Contest - The Feast Committee would like to thank all those 4th thru 8th grade parish students that participated in our T-Shirt Contest. The winner will be announced in a few weeks. If you would like to get involved with the planning of the Feast please feel free to stop by any of the feast committee meetings. The next meeting will be Tuesday, April 5th at 7:30PM in the Rectory Meeting room. CATHOLIC BETHLEHEM CHRISTIAN FAMILIES Representatives from Catholic Bethlehem Christian Families will be here on the Weekend of April 9th & 10th, 2016 after all Masses, to ask for your help for the people of the Holy Land in Bethlehem. These families, sixty years ago, made up 18% of the population. Due to recent events in the Middle East, it has caused these families to face devastating economical strain, and caused the population to decrease to less than 2% in the Holy Land. These families have relied on the income from their sales of religious hand carved olive wood artifacts. So we have come to the USA to try to help support these families by bringing their articles here to sell in the USA. All the proceeds from sales will be sent back to the families of the Holy Land so that they may be able to keep their homes and provide for their families. The last few years were very tough for the Christian families, and this is the only source of income for them.

5 THE SPIRITUAL AND CORPORAL WORKS OF MERCY Pope Francis encourages us to concentrate on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy during this Holy Year. Father John Peter Cameron applies this to the Stations of the Cross: First Station: Jesus Is condemned to Death Bear patiently those who do us ill: You accept injustice so that mercy can set me free. Second Station: Jesus Takes Up His Cross Admonish sinners: Your acceptance of your cross moves me to reflect, convert, believe. Third Station: Jesus Falls the First Time Counsel the doubtful: Your fall amends my doubt that humility is key to loving God. Fourth Station: Jesus Meets His Mother Comfort the afflicted: When Mercy meets the Sorrowful Mother joy begins to be reborn. Fifth Station: Simon Helps Carry the Cross Feed the hungry: In the heft of your cross Simon discovers that he hungers for you. Sixth Station: Jesus Meets Veronica Give drink to the thirsty: You slake the thirst of one who helps you with the gift of your face. Seventh Station: Jesus Falls a Second Time Instruct the ignorant: You show that wisdom comes from accepting what befalls us. Eighth Station: Jesus comforts the Women Welcome the stranger: Even in your Passion you are shelter for the afflicted and homeless. Ninth Station: Jesus Falls a Third Time Visit the imprisoned: Your fall bespeaks your desire to reach those held captive, the ensnared. Tenth Station: Jesus Is Stripped of His Garments Clothe the naked: The indignity you endure is the promise of my dignity to be restored. Eleventh Station: Jesus Is Nailed to the Cross Heal the sick: These wounds are windows revealing the redemptive meaning of suffering. Twelfth Station: Jesus Dies on the Cross Forgive offenses: No inflicted savagery can silence your undying desire for our forgiveness. Thirteenth Station: Jesus Body is Taken Down Pray for the living and the dead: Your mission of mercy proclaims life is changed not ended. Fourteenth Station: Jesus is Laid in the Tomb Bury the dead: Burial is an act of confiding of looking to the future with hope. Father Peter John Cameron, O.P.
