2 CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX APRIL 17, 2011 PALM SUNDAY OF THE LORD S PASSION The first public event that Jesus attended with His disciples was a wedding. It took place in a small Galilean village called Cana. for a man, planning to change the world, that seems a strange way to start by attending a wedding in a country town. As weddings go, it was apparently quite an occasion. To the bride and groom and their families, it was doubtless one of the major events of history. All weddings are special to someone. Your own wedding past or future was or will be special to you. So were or will be the weddings of your family members and close friends. But let s face it for most people, weddings are rather ordinary events. The sheer repetition of the event tends to make it ordinary. But Jesus did not feel that way about this wedding. It was important enough to Him that He was willing to leave whatever He was doing in order to be there. Jesus did not see this wedding as an ordinary event. I think that His capacity for finding the special in the ordinary. Things that were commonplace to most people were, for Him, alive with beauty and meaning. Jesus saw wild flowers, blooming on the hillside. To the average eye, they were grass of the field. To Him, they were symbols of divine providence. He was confident that if God would dress wild flowers in radiant splendor, he would surely provide clothing for His children. Somewhere on the street or in a temple court, He saw the body of a dead sparrow. It was such a common sight that most people never noticed, but Jesus did. In His heart He knew that God had seen and felt its fall. Then He said to His disciples, Do not be afraid, you are more valuable than many sparrows. Jesus was not only a student of nature He was also a keen observer of people. He saw possibilities in ordinary men and women that no one else had ever noticed. A poor widow, dropping two copper coins into the temple treasury was, to Him, the ultimate example of sacrificial giving. A blind beggar behind the city gates of Jericho, was worthy of His time and attention. A condemned thief, dying on a cross, was in His clear vision, a suitable resident for paradise. One of the major differences between Him and us was this we see people in broad generalities and regard them according to their functions. The person who delivers our mail is a mail carrier. The person who brings our coffee is a waiter or waitress. Jesus looked upon people as individual children of God, regardless of what their roles if life might be. He saw the specifics. He could see the special in the ordinary. Can we do that? I hope so, because there is not true greatness without it. If we cannot feel the love of God in the place where we are, it is doubtful we could feel it anywhere. If we cannot see the worth and beauty of the people around us, it is doubtful that we could see the qualities in anybody. Allow me to offer a suggestion for each of us during the remaining days of Lent. Don t wait for some. spectacular event. Don t search for exceptional people. Instead, let us follow the example of Our Lord, and find the special in the ordinary. All are welcome. PASCHAL CANDLE This year s beautiful Paschal candle has been donated in memory of Mary Miele. Mary had been a parishioner along with her beloved husband George for many years. This donation was made by Mary s nieces and nephews: Donna Licandro, Anthony & Louise Licandro, Lorraine & Danny LoParco, Joan & Mike Tomossi & Helene Miele. The candles used during the Easter Vigil this year have been donated by Fran Ricco, in memory of the deceased and living members of the Ricco, Sangiovanni, and Melisi Families.

3 PALM SUNDAY OF THE LORD'S PASSION ST. THERESA S ANNUAL CARD PARTY UNDER THE SEA WEDNESDAY, APRIL 18 TH 7:00 PM VILLA BARONE MANOR It is that time again to come together as a parish family to enjoy and celebrate one another s company at our 55 th Annual Card Party Under the Sea. The Card Party will take place on Wednesday, May 18 th from 7:00 PM 11:00 PM at the Villa Barone Manor. The evening includes and Open Bar, Dinner with choice of two entrees, Dessert and Coffee. The price per ticket is $ There will be wonderful prizes and other surprises. So please bring lots of relatives and friends for a truly fun-filled night out! Tickets are available at the Rectory. Come and enjoy a night of friends, food and fun and maybe win a prize. 50 TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY Couples celebrating their 50 th Wedding Anniversary anytime during 2011 are invited to attend the Annual Golden Wedding Jubilee Mass with Archbishop Dolan at the Cathedral of St. Patrick on Sunday, May 22, 2011 at 2:00 PM. PALM CROSSES The Altar Society will be selling Palm Crosses today before and after each Mass. Each cross is $12.00 and is beautifully decorated. What a wonderful way to celebrate the victory of Christ s ultimate sacrifice. As always thank you for your support. PETITION BOOK Have you noticed our Petition Book in the vestibule of the Church? Every Saturday, before the 5pm Mass, the petitions entered in the book for that week are brought up to the altar of the Blessed Mother, where they remain for all the weekend Masses. Please pray for these intentions. CALLING ALL ALUMNI CLASS OF 1959 TO 2001 Calling all St. Theresa School alumni from there will be an all years Reunion on Saturday, May 7, We want to bring you and your classmates back together to reminisce about experiences here, remembering our faculty and clergy, and reflecting on how St. Theresa has influenced your life. Your evening begins with a Mass at St. Theresa s Church at 5:00 PM, then we move to the school where tours will be conducted by our 8 th Graders, the Class of We will then proceed to the school auditorium where appetizers, dinner, beer and wine will be served. We have a wonderful band for your listening or dancing pleasure, lots of old photos and we ll be taking today photos to remember the evening. PELHAM BAY TAXPAYERS There will be a General Meeting of the Pelham Bay Taxpayers on Monday April 18, 2011 in the school cafeteria.
