3 THIRTY SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ NOVEMBER 6, 2016 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Since an election is looming, as we have all been sufficiently reminded by now, I thought I would share with you one of my favorite political stories. It involves one of the most colorful figures in our history. Theodore Roosevelt campaigned with a zest few office seekers ever equaled and none surpassed. Each New Year s Day of his presidency he would invite the public to drop by the White House for a handshake. In 1907 s session he greeted 8,150 people, at a rate of 50 a minute, a world s record. It was not his only skill for pleasing voters. A group of Kansas farmers once came to Roosevelt s Oyster Bay home for an arranged visit. The dresseddown president greeted them with his famous smile and hearty voice: I m dee-lighted to see you, but I m very busy putting in my hay now. Come down to the barn and we ll talk things over while I work. When they got there, there was no hay on the ground. So the president shouted to his hired man: James! Where s the hay? James stuck his head out of the loft and replied: I m sorry, sir, but I just ain t had time to throw it back since you forked it up for yesterday s delegation. In life we often find it helpful and even necessary to please people. But there is only one before whom we stand in direct immediacy in all our thoughts and actions. That is the one Psalm 139 speaks of when it says: Where can I go from your spirit? From your presence where can I flee? I hope that, when we go to the polls this Tuesday, we will have regard for the God-given values we have been called to hold, and will make our choices in light of wellformed consciences. As is always the case in presidential elections, many important issues are at stake, and our lives will change depending on how they are settled. Msgr. We appreciate all your prayers and "prayers in action" demonstrated through your generosity in purchasing the olive wood religious articles that were available. Thank you. Many Christian Palestinian will soon be hard at work to replenish what you've purchased and more. This in turn creates a virtuous cycle of simple commerce, all because you chose to participate. One of the major problems we face as Christian Palestinians is the lack of awareness about us. I pray that we continue to leave a positive impression on you regarding our community. Peace, Rami Qumsieh, KHS YEAR OF MERCY SERIES JOIN US FOR TWO SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS AT SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH 1. SAINT AUGUSTINE: Mercy in the Fathers of the Church NOVEMBER 15 Msgr. David Hubba with Ana Posadas will offer a presentation on Saint Augustine ( The Preacher of Mercy ) as we continue our Year of Mercy series. The beautiful witness of the Church s greatest early saints and their writings abundantly confirm the Scriptural examples of God s mercy. Pope Francis believes that we can learn to be more merciful through these saints experiences of mercy. The talk will take place on Tuesday, November 15 at 9:15 am in the Jackson Room (in the lower church). There is NO COST and everyone is welcome! 2. CORPORAL AND SPIRITUAL WORKS OF MERCY NOVEMBER 19 Members of the Saint Joseph Social Concerns Committee will be presenting another topic of the Year of Mercy series. "The Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy" will be presented in conjunction with the Legion of Mary's Third Saturday Prayer which will be held on Saturday, November 19 after the Mass in Mary's Chapel. 5 THIRTY SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ NOVEMBER 6, 2016 SALUTING TWO VETERANS AND THEIR SERVICE TO OTHER VETS Joe Potenzano, a parishioner of Our Lady of Visitation in Paramus, has been a member of the Father Washington Chapter of the Catholic War Veterans since He has visited our parish on numerous occasions on behalf of our vets and has always been impressed with our parishioners generosity and support. He kindly offered to share his experiences with us and give us some insight into the CWV. Joe served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict (from ) attaining the rank of Corporal. After his discharge, he worked as a draftsman and went back to school graduating from FDU in 1964 with a degree in mechanical engineering. He worked one year at the Navy Yard in Philadelphia and then at Kellogg, an industrial plant. When he took a job at the Picatinny Arsenal in Dover, he was able to use his Army training. He worked in the rocket propulsion lab designing miniature rockets for artillery. Joe worked over a dozen years as an aerospace and then artillery systems engineer. He retired from Dover in 1988 and started his own firm as a consulting engineer to the Army. He wrote two books on artillery published by the Army. Joe, a single, very young 86-year-old, has welcomed his involvement in the CWV, which has not precluded his participation in other activities he also enjoys, like singing in the OLV choir (which he s done for 39 years). Serving as Third Vice-President of our CWV chapter, Joe cites the common experience veterans share We were part of it and we can recognize what these men and women did and acknowledges the great satisfaction he receives in helping our veterans and their families Kurt Strobach is a longtime parishioner of Saint Joseph and the Commander of the Fr. Washington Chapter of the CWV. Kurt served in the U.S. army during the Viet Nam War. Drafted in 1969, he served as a squad leader and a platoon leader and became head clerk of his Company. In September 1970 he was sent to Viet Nam along with 200 other new recruits. When their plane touched down, they could see bright flashes of light and black smoke and feel the vibrations of explosions not far off. They had to crawl on the hot tarmac carrying their heavy duffel bags along with them. Kurt served as the head clerk in a Military Police Combat Unit. Because there was a massive downsizing of troops at that time, Kurt s unit was involved in calling in air strikes and making long-range patrols with the infantry. He quietly recalled some terrifying experiences and spoke of sights, sounds and smells that remain in his memory. (continued above) 5 After Viet Nam, Kurt spent four years in the Army Reserve. He found support from other veterans as they each struggled to return to civilian life. Kurt was employed as a data analyst for a bank and then returned to college while also working as a freelance artist. He worked in risk analysis and loss control at A.I.G. and then started his own company KES Signs Systems (designing signage for office buildings). He met his wife Pat in 1978 and together they have two daughters and two grandsons. In 1987 Kurt s military service again came to the forefront of his life when he joined the Air National Guard and went on several assignments to Iraq, Kuwait and Bahrain. Like Joe, Kurt is steadfast in his commitment to serving his fellow veterans who unselfishly answered the call to serve our country. As President Reagan said of the Catholic War Veterans in 1984, There have never been any sunshine soldiers or summer patriots in your ranks, and I have the deepest admiration for your commitment to serve both God and country. The SJS PTO will be hosting a continental breakfast and program for our military heroes. If you served in the U.S. Military and would like to attend our celebration, please let us know by November 7. You should call our school secretary at and let her know you will be attending and in what branch of the military you served. On the day of the celebration, our veterans should plan to arrive a few minutes early as the program will begin promptly at 9:00 am with an opening prayer. VETERANS DAY NOVEMBER 11 Heavenly Father, on this day, help us remember those who gave of themselves to keep us safe and secure. Enkindle in our consciences a desire to serve those who served their country selflessly. Give us the grace to aid those who have given aid and protection to us and others both here and overseas. Let us never forget the causes for which they fought or the bravery they showed on the battlefield. May we be always be mindful of those who paid the price for our freedom, just as your Son gave his life to free us from the bondage of sin. Amen.
