2 Addressing the Christians of Milan some time during the last quarter of the fourth century, their bishop, St. Ambrose (a man who merited St. Augustine s total admiration during the time he was struggling about committing to the Faith), reminded them about the importance of the season of Lent, saying the sacred days are drawing near, the acceptable of which it is written; Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation (2 Cor. 6, 2). And so you must bemore earnest in prayer and in almsgiving, in fasting and in All of us are called to our own Lenten spiritual journeys this week, beginning with Ash Wednesday s robust sign of our mortality and our need for repentance. Gerhard Podhradsky has clearly and briely pointed out the importance of these days in writing that As a time during which the faithful should give themselves to prayer and hear the Word of God with greater attentiveness, Lent serves as a preparation for the paschal mystery; this it does both by calling people to repentance and, more especially, by reminding them of, or preparing them for, their baptism. SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ The Church has long viewed Lent as an opportune time for us to receive the Sacrament of Penance (Reconciliation), and recommends this beautiful encounter with God s mercy to all of us. St. Ambrose did so, urging his people to recall the astonishing success the terriied Jonah experienced when he inally cooperated with God s summons to preach repentance to the fearsome Assyrians: [B]elieve irmly, that if in these days you have made a thorough confession of your sins, and done penance as we have told you, you shall receive from Our Most Merciful Lord the pardon of all your offenses; as did the Ninivites, who earned deliverance from their aflictions by doing penance in sackcloth and ashes (Jn. 3). So you also, following their example, if you cry out with all your heart to the Lord, you will invoke His mercy on you, so that serene and joyful you will celebrate the day of the Lord s resurrection, and thus blessed, you will after this life cross over to your heavenly home, by the grace of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Does this sound like an invitation to be given a low priority or to be nonchalantly ignored? Msgr. David Hubba 2 The Franciscan Friars of the Renewal will offer three nights of prayer and relection with emphasis on conversing with the Lord, forgiveness and God s mercy. You may be familiar with the Friars from their EWTN program Sunday Night Prime which is broadcast every Sunday at 8:00 pm. The Friars also recently received pontiical recognition from Pope Francis. In addition to the talks (conducted before the exposed Blessed Sacrament), the Friars will provide music for each evening, the opportunity for Confession, and a Eucharistic healing procession on the inal night. They will also make available for purchase books by Fr. Benedict Groeschel and Fr. Andrew Apostoli.

4 Lent is the time for the faithful to be ever more attentive to the word of God and prayer, to prepare themselves by penance for the renewal of their baptismal promises at Easter. 1. The days of both Fast and Abstinence during Lent are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence. (If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigilon Holy Saturday nightas the paschal fast to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily His On a day of, one only (1) full meal is permitted, and two (2) smaller meals, which, if added together, would not exceed the main meal in quantity. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast. SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ On a day of, no meat may be eaten. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of The obligation to observe the laws of Fast and Abstinence substantially, or as a whole, is a serious Obligation. The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary selfdenial as The time for fulilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty) extends from the First Sunday of Lent, March 5, 2017 to The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, June 11, Operation Rice Bowl, created by Catholic Relief Services, has been a Lenten tradition of Saint Joseph Parish for many years. The money collected will help many who are hungry in our own country and throughout the world. Cardboard rice bowls are available at the doors of the church (or at the Parish Ofice/Rectory). All donations (in the form of a check made out to Saint Joseph Church do NOT return actual rice bowl or coins) must be dropped off or sent to the Religious Education Ofice located at 105 Harrison Street, New Milford, NJ by Wednesday, April As we mark the start of our Lenten journey this year, a time of both relection and anticipation, let us relect on those good priests who have walked with us through the years on previous Lenten journeys. Their service to the Church and her people has given us all comfort and support that can never be forgotten. Through a contribution to the Archdiocesan Collection for Retired Priests, we can say a very strong "thank you" and ensure that they will receive the comfort and support that they deserve. We hope you will be generous in the Ash Wednesday collection for the retired priests of the Archdiocese of Newark. Individual confessions are regularly heard every Saturday from 5:00 pm in the Reconciliation Room in the Upper Church (near the main entrance). There will be a Communal Penance Service here at Saint Joseph Church on Monday, March 27 at 7:30 pm. We will also be welcoming parishioners from St. Peter the Apostle parish at that celebration of the Sacrament. The Stations (or Way) of the Cross is a Catholic devotion during which the faithful make a spiritual pilgrimage of prayer through meditating on the chief scenes of Christ s sufferings and death images of which are typically hung on the walls of the church. The Stations of the Cross will be held at Saint Joseph Church EVERY FRIDAY IN LENT (except Good Friday) at 2:00 pm with the schoolchildren and again at 7:00. All are welcome to attend.

Be of One Mind: share each other s troubles with mutual affection; be compassionate and humble 1 Peter 3:8 As Catholics, we are called to serve our neighbors with compassion and humility. The Sharing God s Blessings Annual Appeal offers each of us the opportunity to share in the troubles endured by our brothers and sisters in Christ by funding ministries and programs which provide social, educational and spiritual support to thousands of people each year. May we grow in faith, hope and love; inspire us to be generous in supporting the Sharing God s Blessings Appeal; and allow us to see the face of Jesus in all those we serve. Adapting to life after the death of a loved one often takes more time than we expect. Recognizing that by virtue of our baptism into the Christian faith we are called by Jesus to minister to one another, our parish community of Saint Joseph will offer a Bereavement Support Group led by Sister Joseina Morales and Kurt Strobach for our brothers and sisters who have lost a loved one through death. (Parishioners from other churches are also welcome.) The purpose of the group is to provide opportunities for mutual healing in a conidential, educational and spiritual environment.
