3 THIRTY FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ NOVEMBER 5, 2017 St. Martin of Tours (c to 397), whose feast is Saturday, was an ex-roman soldier who later became a monk and then a bishop in what is now France. His renown was due in large measure to the (c. 397) biography of him by Sulpicius Severus, which passes on a number of accounts of his healing miracles and of his victorious encounters with the devil. The first edition of Butler s Lives of the Saints records that One day, when Martin was praying in his cell, the devil came to him environed with light, clothed in royal robes, with a crown of gold and precious stones upon his head, and with a gracious and pleasant countenance, told him twice that he was Christ. Humility is the touchstone which discovers the devil s artifices in all which a spirit of pride reigns. By this the saint after some pause discerned the evident mark of the angel of darkness, and said to him: The Lord Jesus said not that he was to come clothed with purple and crowned and adorned with a diadem. Nor will I ever believe him to be Christ who shall not come in the habit and figure in which Christ suffered and who shall not bear the marks of the cross in his body. At these words the fiend vanished, and left the cell filled with an intolerable stench. John Henry Newman, in commenting on this incident, wrote that (continued above) FROM THE PASTOR S DESK The application of this vision to Martin s age is obvious; I suppose it means in this day, that Christ comes not in pride of intellect, or reputation for philosophy. These are the glittering robes in which Satan is now arraying. Many spirits are abroad, more are issuing from the pit; the credentials which they display are the precious gifts of mind, beauty, richness, depth, originality. Christian, look hard at them with Martin in silence, and ask them for the print of the nails. The cross will always be the mark that authenticates Jesus Christ, since it is the utmost proof of his great love for us. And all who wish to follow the Lord have to be ready to take up that portion of it that God assigns for us to bear. How can we ever forget the strong words of St. Paul: The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are called, Jews and Greeks alike, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. (1 Co 1, ) Msgr. David Hubba EACH OF US ARE CALLED We all have a call to further the kingdom of God, whether that is as a priest or deacon or for that matter a married or a single person. Each has a call from God and the community to live out our lives in service to another. What is your call? In Latin, the word vocare means to call, to name, or to invoke. As Catholic Christians, we believe that God through the community calls each of us into work for the kingdom of God. NOVEMBER 5-11, A PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS Let us pray... God, who called to the people of Israel, hear our prayer. You have called each of us to be the hands and feet of your Son our Lord Jesus Christ. Help us to tune our ears to your call, the small voice that is always asking us to help spread your good news. We humbly ask that you endow us with the knowledge and skills to help others to see that you are Lord and God. We ask this through Christ our Lord and brother, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen.

4 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ EUCHARISTIC ADORATION NOVEMBER 8 SHAWL MINISTRY MEETING NOVEMBER 14 Because the first Wednesday of the month is the Solemnity of All Saints, adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will be held on Wednesday, November 8 in Mary s Chapel (lower church) from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. The Legion of Mary invites you to attend. Saint Joseph s Shawl Ministry will meet on Tuesday, November 14 from 2:004:00 pm in the Parish Life Center on Grove Street. All knitters & crocheters are welcome to join us in making shawls or bring your current yarn project and spend a relaxing afternoon with us. Our ministry has shawls available for those experiencing illness, confinement, bereavement, or other situation. MONTHLY PRAYER WITH MARY NOVEMBER 11 The Monthly Prayer with Mary will be held on Saturday, November 11. MATT 23:12 Jesus gave His life to serve, not to be served. Putting others needs before our own needs is a sign of becoming a mature disciple, of following Jesus example. Humility is really a sign of a strength. By putting others needs first we declare to the world that we are putting our complete trust in God. When we align our thoughts and actions with God s plan for us, the result is joy and peace.
