2 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ JOIN US THIS FRIDAY! 100TH ANNIVERSARY MIRACLE AT FATIMA OCTOBER 13 OUR LADY OF FATIMA SHRINE SPARKLES FOR THE ANNIVERSARY In 2009, as part of his Eagle Scout project, Kevin Walters,a graduate of Saint Joseph School, constructed (with the assistance of Boy Scout Troop 142) the beautiful shrine to Our Lady of Fatima that stands to the left of our church s main entrance. (Kevin and his troop also built the bench dedicated to pastor emeritus Fr. George Reilly that was placed opposite the shrine for prayer and contemplation). Over the last eight years, the much-loved shrine has been impacted by extreme weather conditions. Parishioner Kurt Strobach (who is co -chair, along with Pat Fakharzadeh, of the Fatima Anniversary celebration), thought that the 100th Anniversary of the apparitions was the perfect time to restore the shrine to its original glory. Kurt scrubbed and sanded the shrine, removing any traces of mold or mildew. He resealed joints with silicone caulking. Three thin coats of cedar stain were applied and gold paint was used to highlight the cross and trim. Kurt, an artist, then painted a beautiful backdrop for the shrine on hardboard illustrating the dancing sun of the Fatima miracle. (See cover.) Please come see our beautifully restored shrine to Our Lady of Fatima when we celebrate the 100th Anniversary on Friday, October 13 at 6:00 pm. 6:00 PM AT OUR GROTTO This coming October 13 commemorates the final apparition of Our Lady of Fatima as well as the great "Miracle of the Sun" that took place in Fatima, Portugal on October 13, Our Lady, who appeared to three shepherd children, left us a message to pray always, pray the Rosary, read Scripture, and receive the Sacraments so that we can grow closer to her Son. GUEST SPEAKER: Let us try to live this message by joining our parish in a special program on Friday, October 13 at 6:00 pm in the Grotto next to the church (on Harrison Street) that will include an outdoor rosary procession plus an indoor Fr. John Quill program in the Upper Church with Retired chaplain of a guest speaker, music, and Bergen Regional prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. Refreshments will follow (at approx. 7:15 pm) in Mary s Chapel. In planning our event, it would be helpful to knowhow many parishioners will be attending. CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF THE DIACONATE This Sunday, October 8, 2017, marks the kick-off of the celebratory Year of the Deacon the 50th anniversary of the restoration of the permanent diaconate. Saint Joseph is blessed to have Deacon George Montalvo as both our Deacon and Director of Religious Education. The role of permanent deacon is an important one. A deacon may administer the sacraments of Baptism and Marriage; preside at benedictions, Communion services and funeral services. A deacon may assist the bishop at confirmation and the priest at the Eucharist. He may proclaim the Gospel at Mass and often preaches the homily. (Unlike priests, deacons cannot celebrate the Eucharist or administer the sacraments of Reconciliation or Anointing of the Sick.) For more information about the Permanent Diaconate of the Archdiocese of Newark go to St. Stephen (shown opposite), mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles, was one of the first deacons in the early Church at Jerusalem. As is recounted in Acts, the Twelve decided to ordain seven deacons to see to the care of some of the Greekspeaking widows who were being neglected. Stephen was the oldest. He is also traditionally venerated as the first martyr of Christianity. Please keep Deacon George and all the deacons of our diocese in your prayers throughout this coming year. 2 ST. 3 TWENTY SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ OCTOBER 8, 2017 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK A number of journalists covered the events of October 13. The ones from the secular newspapers manifested especially sharp skepticism, including the reporter for O Seculo, Avelino de Almeida, a lapsed Catholic and onetime seminarian whose story for that very morning asserted that the pilgrims were surely in for a terrible disappointment instead of the miracle they anticipated. Going to Fatima, in Fr. Jaki s words, as someone thinking that miracles do not happen, he saw things very differently when he wrote his next dispatch for his paper s edition of October 15. At noon, the anticipated time of Mary s appearance, after a morning of heavy, pounding rain, Almeida reported: Friday is the hundredth anniversary of the Miracle of the Sun, which marked Our Lady s final appearance at Fatima, once just a remote place of fields where sheep were cared for and now one of the world s great Marian shrines. In 1917 Portugal s government was in the hands of men who confidently predicted that their policies would extirpate Catholicism within two years. They ordered Catholic schools to be closed, seized churches and other Catholic properties, and sent the Cardinal Archbishop of Lisbon into exile. It was also a time when many nations were convulsed by the horrors of World War I. Fr. Stanley Jaki, the Benedictine monk who was the greatest scholar in the history of Seton Hall University, wrote God and the Sun at Fatima, a major book on the events that occurred there, one that used his expertise in both of the areas of study in which he held doctorates, theology and physics. I have drawn on his book for most of this piece. Beginning on May 13, 1917, Mary appeared to three simple shepherd children: Lucia Santos, age 10, and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Martos, ages 8½ and 7. Mary asked the children to meet with her on the 13th day of the next five months. The encounters duly followed, except the one expected in August, which was delayed until August 19 because the chief government official of the rural area arrested the children to pressure them to admit that their story was a fabrication. He treated them harshly, threatening them with death and cruelly locking them up in a jail cell with criminals, but they refused to be shaken into false denials. All three children saw Our Lady, although only the two girls heard her, and Lucia alone spoke to her. Their meetings took place at an oak tree in a place known as the Cova da Iria. Mary urged them to pray the Rosary daily, to honor her Immaculate Heart, and to offer fervent prayers imploring people to repent their sins. And on three occasions she promised that a miracle would occur during her final appearance on October 13. As word about the visionaries experiences spread, 70 people joined the children on June 13. On July 13, the number rose to 2,000, prompting powerful anti-catholic elements in Portugal to take further actions, including the malicious kidnapping of the children. (While it was taking place, 5,000 people gathered at the Cova for the appearance they expected.) For September 13, 10,000 made the journey. By October 13, a vast crowd of pilgrims made their way to Fatima, a number that has been variously estimated as 40,000 to 100,000. (continued above) [Lucia] states that the Lady has again spoken to her and the still dark sky high up suddenly begins to clear; then the rain stopped and we could see that the sun was going to light up the place, which had been steeped in grey all morning as if it were winter. And for ten minutes as the sun shone, it behaved like a fiery wheel in motion. As Almeida wrote: The sun trembles, the sun makes brusque movements, never seen before, and beyond cosmic laws the sun danced as the typical expression of the peasants put it. This description Almedia used became the headline of his account: The sun danced at midday in Fatima. The expression has since become the famous summary of that day s miracle, the promised authentification for Mary s messages. Two weeks after this article, Almeida wrote a follow-up saying, in Father Jaki s summary, that no one would ever deprive the Cova of it s newly gained fame. Happily, Avelino de Almeida regained his faith. He died in 1932 at age 59, fortified by the Church s sacraments. Francisco and Jacinta Marto were declared to be saints by Pope Francis this past May 13, the hundredth anniversary of Our Lady s initial appearance to the three children. Because Lucia outlived her cousins by many decades, dying only in 2005, her cause for sainthood is still pending but is strongly expected to succeed. I hope you will join us this Friday at 6:00 when we will gather at the grotto near the left side of church to observe the hundredth anniversary of Mary s last appearance at Fatima. Our parishioners Pat Fakharzadeh and Kurt Strobach have organized its events and recruited the volunteers that will make it possible. First we will pray a processional Rosary, one stop being at the Fatima shrine Kurt refurbished just recently. Then we will go into the church for Exposition and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, and a talk by Father John Quill. Finally, we will enjoy some refreshments and fellowship. It will be a beautiful tribute to our Blessed Mother, Our Lady of Fatima. Msgr. David Hubba 3
