OUR LADY OF FATIMA 100 YEARS LATER The year 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady to three shepherd children at Fatima, Portugal, where the Blessed Mother appeared once each month from May 13 until Oct. 13, The message of Fatima highlights many central truths and devotions of the Catholic faith: the Trinity, the Eucharist, penance, the Rosary and sacrifices for the conversion of sinners. In 2002, Pope St. John Paul II added the May 13 feast of Our Lady of Fatima to the general Roman calendar. It is estimated that some 4-5 million people visit Fatima each year, and more are expected for the centennial year, including a visit by Pope Francis, who plans to travel to Portugal to celebrate the 100-year anniversary. 4 On May 10 of 1869 the construction crews of two railroads joined their tracks at Ogden, Utah to form the Union Pacific Railroad, a project that greatly speeded the opening of the American West. But an even more amazing engineering feat, given the methods then available, was the rapid building of a 1700-foot-long tunnel to bring water, a crucial and scarce resource, from the Gihon Spring (outside Jerusalem s walls) to the Pool of Siloam (inside its southeastern wall) during the reign of Judah s King Hezekiah. The urgency, which arose from fear of an imminent invasion by the army of Assyria s dreaded ruler Sennacherib in 701 BC, led to the assigning of two separate excavation teams to complete the project. They started from opposite directions and planned to meet somewhere in the middle. Their task was made even more difficult when the tunnel took a twisting path, either because of natural obstacles or, perhaps, because burials there had to be respected. But eventually the two digging parties achieved the intended connection. In the tunnel, the workers etched an inscription, found in 1880 by a boy who was playing in the water. It reads: SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ The boring through is completed. And this is the story of the boring: while yet they plied the pick, each toward his fellow, and while yet there were three cubits to be bored through, there was heard the voice of one calling to the other that there was a hole in the rock on the right hand and on the left hand. And on the day of the boring through the workers in the tunnel struck each to meet his fellow, pick upon pick. Then the water poured from the source to the pool twelve hundred cubits, and a hundred cubits was the height of the rock above the heads of the workers in the tunnel. (See, in connection with Hezekiah s tunnel, 2 Kgs 20, 20; 2 Chron. 32, 30 and 2 Kgs 18, ) In this Sunday s Gospel selection we encounter Jesus s healing of a man who was blind all his life (Jn 9, 1-41), an incident that occurs at the Pool of Siloam. Mining all its riches would be impossible, but since we are quickly approaching Easter, a time when the Church is very attentive to the enormous importance of Baptism, it would be good for us to note that the greatest modern Catholic interpreter of John s Gospel, (continued above) FROM THE PASTOR S DESK 4 Father Raymond Brown, saw strong baptismal overtones in this passage. Observing that Temple worshipers at the feast of Tabernacles used waters from Siloam, Brown recalled that during this festival Jesus had described himself as the source of living water for those who believe in him (Jn 7, 37-38). And the healing of the blind man is the result of his having been washed in the water, something Baptism accomplishes spiritually for its recipients. Brown also pointed out that the early Church liked to use the Jn 9 text to help prepare people who were soon to be baptized at the Easter Vigil. Msgr. 5 FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT ~ MARCH 26, 2017 COMMUNAL PENANCE SERVICE MONDAY, MARCH 27 How great is the mercy of the Lord, and his forgiveness for those who return to him! (Sirach 17:29) When he was asked why he became a Catholic, G. K. Chesterton, the great English writer, replied: To get my sins forgiven. Jesus came to earth for that purpose. You shall call his name Jesus [ Savior ], for he will save his people from their sins (Mt1:21). And the Church, since she is his Body, continues his work. Therefore, the Church s purpose on earth is to extend through time and space this kingdom of forgiveness. Not merely forgiveness, but Christ s forgiveness. How important is forgiveness? Eternally important! Refusing to forgive and be reconciled with God is to hold on to sin. Reconciliation is not only a sacrament of forgiveness, but of strength. We receive not merely mercy for our sins, but the power of the Holy Spirit to overcome them in the future as we cooperate with God s grace. RITE OF WASHING OF FEET HOLY THURSDAY, APRIL 13 Parishioners are needed to be part of the rite of foot washing at the Mass of the Lord s Last Supper on Holy Thursday, April 13.
