(JOSHUA 5:12) Over the forty years that the Israelites journeyed through the desert, God provided them with manna to eat. As soon as they were able to enjoy the fruits of the Promised Land the manna ceased. 3 In his novel Brideshead Revisited, Evelyn Waugh s central character Charles Ryder, a first-year student at Oxford, has spent all his available money, and then some, in high living (and extensive drinking) in a social circle considerably above his own well-off upbringing. He comes home to his displeased father s house for summer vacation and has an extended war with him, hilariously described by Waugh and expertly acted by Sir John Gielgud in his role of Mr. Ryder in the highly praised 1981 TV miniseries production of the novel. Charles s father first speaks of the fancy food and classy wines he says he will order for his son s stay which he has no intention of actually providing then asks Charles about how he plans to spend the long vacation: On travel? Or perhaps on excursions to the theater? The son answers: One of the problems of the vacation is money, Father. Oh, I shouldn t worry about a thing like that at your age. You see, I ve run rather short. Yes? said my father without any sound of interest. In fact I don t quite know how I m going to get through the next two months. Well, I m the worst person to come to for advice. I ve never been short, as you so painfully call it. Their battle escalates when Charles invites a bland acquaintance over for dinner, whom Mr. Ryder disconcerts throughout it by treating him as though he were an American, explaining various British terms and (continued above) FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT~ MARCH 6, 2016 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK customs. At their next dinner, the father retaliates by asking over an ensemble of excruciatingly dull and unlikable guests to partake of exceptionally insipid food. Later, he promises Charles that he will host many such evenings so that his son s summer won t lack diversions. Charles soon takes advantage of an opportunity to leave his father s house for a chance to visit his closest Oxford friend in Italy. The whole scene is a kind of antithesis to the Parable of the Prodigal Son. There the father s great joy at getting his younger son back, even when the son has behaved like a selfish fool, causes the father to shower him with every most lavish evidence of mercy, even when the dutiful older son complains about it. As the late Father Henri Nouwen writes so splendidly in his book The Return of the Prodigal Son: He does not simply offer more than can be reasonably expected from someone who has been offended: no, he completely gives himself away without reserve. Both sons are for him everything. In them he wants to pour out his very life. The way the younger son is given robe, ring, and sandals, and welcomed home with sumptuous celebration, as well as the way the elder son is urged to accept his unique place in his father s heart and to join his younger brother around the table, makes it very clear that all boundaries of patriarchal behavior are broken through. This is not the picture of a remarkable father. This is the portrayal of God, whose goodness, love, forgiveness, care, joy, and compassion have no limits at all. Msgr. David Hubba NEW HOPE Inc. VISITS THIS WEEKEND TO SPEAK AT ALL MASSES New Hope Incorporated, a pregnancy resource center that was started 31 years ago operating first out of volunteers homes and then from an office in Englewood, has now moved to Westwood, NJ. Its all-volunteer staff provides help for single first-time mothers and their babies including subsidies for housing, daycare, education and counseling. New Hope s mission is to help young mothers attain emotional stability, parenting expertise, physical wellbeing, spiritual serenity and growth, financial security and a meaningful career. Mentors work with young moms for three years unique in outreach programs. (continued above) In turn, the women sign a contract to abide by the rules set forth in order to remain in the program. Volunteers from New Hope will be at all the doors of the church this weekend to answer any questions and to accept any donations. 4 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ SOCIAL CONCERNS MEETING MARCH 10 "The presence of Christ is ministered to each other and becomes tangible in the community, especially when it is gathered for worship or engaged in some work of service to those in need." (Fr. Thomas Keating) Our Saint Joseph Social Concerns Committee will meet Thursday, March 10 at 7:30 pm in the Saint Joseph Lower School Library. We would love to have you join us! All are welcome. SOCIAL CONCERNS BINGO & BASKETS APRIL 14 The Bingo and Basket fundraiser for our Brother/Sister Parish, St. Joseph in Jersey City, will take place on Thursday evening, April 14 in the Saint Joseph Lower School Gymnasium. The doors will open at 6:00 pm and Bingo will begin at 7:00 pm. We are presently collecting gifts for our Tricky Tray Baskets. We will gratefully accept any gift you would like to donate to help make this a successful event for the school children of St. Joseph in Jersey City. Please call Pat DeNicolo at or Joan Murray at PARISHIONERS NEEDED RITE OF WASHING OF FEET HOLY THURSDAY, MARCH 24 Parishioners are needed to be part of the rite of foot washing at the Mass of the Lord s Last Supper on Holy Thursday, March 24. If you are interested in participating please call the parish office at and leave your name, phone # and address with our parish secretary Gerry. We will need 12 individuals (including men, women, teens and older children) for this centuries old ritual enactment of the sign that Jesus gave us (in his own washing of the feet of his disciples at the Last Supper) that we must love one another. LENTEN COMMUNAL PENANCE SERVICE MARCH 9 Saint Joseph Parish will join with St. Peter the Apostle Parish for a communal Penance Service on Wednesday, March 9 at 7:30 pm at St. Peter s Church (445 Fifth Ave., River Edge, NJ). The priests of both parishes will be in attendance. Come celebrate the sacrament of forgiveness in this Jubilee Year of Mercy as we prepare for Easter. ASCPG TO SELL IRISH SODA BREAD NEXT WEEKEND The American Special Children s Pilgrimage Group, that sponsors an annual Easter week pilgrimage to Lourdes, France for children and young adults with special developmental and physical needs, will be selling Irish soda bread after Masses next weekend (March 12-13). 5 FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT~ MARCH 6, 2016 JOIN US MARCH NEXT WEEKEND!...as Friar Johnpaul Cafiero, OFM, a Franciscan Priest of the Sacred Heart Province of Chicago/St.Louis leads us in reflections on the last seven words of Jesus in his engaging and informative style. Born and raised in the New York Metro area, Friar Johnpaul is the oldest of an ltalian/polish Catholic family. He is a former police officer who has worked as a counselor and chaplain at the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center in Chicago. His work has included counseling with gang members and their families while working closely with the police gangcrimes Unit of the Chicago Police Dept. Coming from an alcoholic family himself, Friar Johnpaul has worked extensively with Adult Children of Alcoholics both in private therapy and in the 12 Step Programs. This work has brought him to minister to survivors of physical and sexual abuse as well. As a follower of St. Francis of Assisi, Friar Johnpaul's love of the poor and outcasts is only surpassed by his love of the scripture. This comes through his many speaking and preaching engagements. Friar Johnpaul has lectured and preached internationally. He is a pastoral associate and preacher at Holy Family Parish in Inverness and serves as chaplain for the IL State Police. ON MY HONOR Members of both Saint Joseph Brownie Girl Scouts (Troop 5571) and Saint Joseph Cub Scouts (Pack 142) recently completed the requirements to earn the following religious awards: the Girl Scouts Family of God medal and the Cub Scouts Parvuli Dei (or Child of God) medal. 6 OUR ANNUAL BEEFSTEAK DINNER ANOTHER BIG SUCCESS! The SJS Gym was filled with parishioners last Saturday enjoying delicious, tender slices of beef served by Nightingale s, the area s premier beefsteak banquet company, great music (by our own Peter Greco), and wonderful company. Thank you to the Committee for planning such a well done event and to all the folks who joined us for the food, fun and fellowship. We couldn t have done it without you! The names of the lucky winners of our 50/50 raffle were called at the dinner and will be announced in next week s bulletin. We will also have photos in next week s bulletin! YOUTH GROUP UPDATE Our Youth Group has begun working on the Passion Play that will be presented in church at 7:30 pm on Good Friday.
