He calls some to marriage, some to the priesthood, and others to religious life or to live as generous single people. Fully living our own vocationsand teaching young people how to discern God s call-is a serious duty, but also a joyful one. Today begins National Vocation Awareness Week, which was instituted by the U.S. Bishops in 1976, and is now celebrated the first week of November. This year, the beginning of the week falls on All Saints Day-a happy coincidence, because a vocation, in its fullest sense, is our path to heaven and sainthood. During this week, please pray about how God is calling you to live your vocation more deeply. Encourage the young people in your life-children, grandchildren, students and friends-to be open if God calls them to priesthood or religious life. 7 St. Ann s Parish Solemnity of All Saints November 1, 2015 You may have heard that on September 8 th, 2015 Pope Francis issued an apostolic letter which modified the process for the declaration of nullity of marriage commonly known as an annulment. This document takes effect on December 8 th, 2015, the opening of the Year of Mercy. Cardinal Dolan recently sent a letter to all priests explaining what this will mean for us in New York. Please allow me to share with you a few highlights of the changes: First of all, it is critical that we remember that the Pope has not changed any of the grounds for an annulment. He is not relaxing the law as to what qualifies for an annulment. What he is doing is streamlining the process to make it easier for people to get an answer in a shorter period of time. He is specifically reducing the number of steps necessary in order to go through the process. The most significant change is the elimination of an automatic mandatory review of an affirmative decision issued by the Tribunal. In the past, anytime the Tribunal ruled that a marriage was null and void that decision automatically had to go to a second tribunal to see if they came up with the same decision. The Pope is eliminating this step, which should remove several months of time from the process. He is also introducing a shorter process for an annulment, which we might want to call the fast track. This process will be available in situations where both parties in the marriage are cooperating with the annulment process and the substantive proofs and arguments for the marriage being declared null and void are evident and overwhelming. This will not apply to all annulments, but only those where we re basically dealing with an open and shut case. Finally, and certainly most appealing to everyone, the Holy Father is eliminating all fees for the annulment process. In addition to the immediate result of exercising as much charity as possible to those in need of an annulment whose finances are restricted, it will hopefully prevent anyone from thinking they are buying an annulment and will silence any of the critics of the annulment process who claim that only those with enough money can get an annulment. This means that after December 8 th, 2015 all annulments that are submitted will be processed free of charge. All of this is in keeping with what Pope Francis has repeatedly said about trying to cut through the red tape and make processes such as annulments more available to the people. He is following through on one of the things that he first mentioned when he became Pope, and hopefully this change will be good news for many people. As of now, the Archdiocese is holding off until December 8 th from accepting any new annulment cases, so if you wish to apply for an annulment, please wait until then.
