Psalm 46:10 Busy is new popular. We have a love/hate relationship with being busy. We chafe against confines of our overloaded schedules. We think of friends we would love get ger with, but n we sigh after we check our calendars. We could probably squeeze m in next month. At same time, if we re not as frenetically busy as we think we should be, we can begin feel lazy and ashamed. If we reduce our pace at all, surely that would mean we are tumbling wards lives of sloth. The voice within often prevents us from slowing down. In addition, many of us secretly fear that if we ok our foot off accelerar at all, our lives would simply spin out of control. So, we find ourselves trapped. We hate being so busy, but we don t have freedom do anything about it. In this predicament we find ourselves in, Sabbath is God s great gift us. It is an invitation more accurately, it is a command from God sp. In fact, word Sabbath actually means sp. On Sabbath, we sp, exhale, celebrate, and receive new life from God. This weekly rest is become a foundational and satisfying rhythm for our lives. But, Sabbath is significantly more than a useful weekly practice that enables us get some much-needed rest. The Sabbath is an invitation for us enter in God s rest. It is an opportunity for us rejoice in and receive what God has done for us both in creation and in salvation. In or words, Sabbath is both a practice that shapes our weekly rhythms and a vital disposition of our hearts. Sabbath is a grace-filled and Christ-centered way of being in world. Let us worship!

3 FOR REFLECTION The spiritual rest which God especially intends in this commandment [ covenant command keep Sabbath holy] is that we not only cease from our labor and trade but much more that we let God alone work in us and that in all our powers do we nothing of our own. Martin Lur, Treatise on Good Works Unless orwise noted, all Scripture quotations are from The Holy Bible, English Standard Version (ESV ), copyright 2001 by Crossway, a publishing ministry of Good News Publishers. Used by permission. All rights reserved....we can truly learn how rest only when we are genuinely freed by God's grace. Our Sabbath observance will not give us genuine rest if we use it merely as an excuse be workaholics rest of week. Only in sure knowledge that we don't have manufacture our success in life by our own efforts can we have freedom not be continuously working at making our way. Redemption of spirit releases us and calls us away from struggles of heart. Grace, indeed, lets us rest in peace. Marva Dawn, Keeping Sabbath Wholly: Ceasing, Resting, Embracing, Feasting

5 LECTIO SACRA Mark 2:23-28 NRSV One sabbath he was going through grainfields; and as y made ir way his disciples began pluck heads of grain. The Pharisees said him, Look, why are y doing what is not lawful on sabbath? And he said m, Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need of food? He entered house of God, when Abiathar was high priest, and ate bread of Presence, which it is not lawful for any but priests eat, and he gave some his companions. Then he said m, The sabbath was made for humankind, and not humankind for sabbath; so Son of Man is lord even of sabbath. Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been practice of church for thousands of years have portions of bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need be shaped by all of God s word. The word of Lord! Thanks be God! INTERLUDE Musical interludes are included in our service in order provide space for reflection and worship. Standing CONFESSION OF SIN Gracious God, in a world of distractions which compete continuously for our attention, we confess how we have been bad stewards of our time, ignoring your Spirit within our midst. Forgive us, loving Far. We confess minutes, hours, days, when we have chosen busy ourselves with idols of our hearts, irreverently bowing down before m instead of before you. Forgive us, loving Far. Confession of sin happens within context of relationship, both with God and each or. We confess ger, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ. And in both our busyness and our boredom, we confess you how we have struggled accept true rest which your gospel so freely and abundantly offers us: in disbelieving in your mercy, we have pushed you away out of shame; in disbelieving your goodness, we have strived in our own strength make better lives for ourselves; in disbelieving in your provision, we have sought idols help us feel safe. Forgive us, loving Far. We confess when we have done se things knowingly and recklessly, and when we have done se things inadvertently and out of ignorance. Forgive us, loving Far. (silent prayer of confession) 2

O Lord, hear voice! Let your ears be attentive voice of pleas for mercy! Praying through Psalms each week teaches us how pray, using prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, re will be pauses for reflection. If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? But with you re is forgiveness, that you may be feared. I wait for LORD, soul waits, and in his word I hope; soul waits for Lord more than watchmen for morning, more than watchmen for morning. (continued) 4

15 SERMON TEXT Matw 11:20-12:14 [20] Then he began denounce cities where most of his mighty works had been done, because y did not repent. [21] Woe you, Chorazin! Woe you, Bethsaida! For if mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, y would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. [22] But I tell you, it will be more bearable on day of judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you. [23] And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted heaven? You will be brought down Hades. For if mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. [24] But I tell you that it will be more lerable on day of judgment for land of Sodom than for you. [9] He went on from re and entered ir synagogue. [10] And a man was re with a wired hand. And y asked him, Is it lawful heal on Sabbath? so that y might accuse him. [11] He said m, Which one of you who has a sheep, if it falls in a pit on Sabbath, will not take hold of it and lift it out? [12] Of how much more value is a man than a sheep! So it is lawful do good on Sabbath. [13] Then he said man, Stretch out your hand. And man stretched it out, and it was resred, healthy like or. [14] But Pharisees went out and conspired against him, how destroy him. [25] At that time Jesus declared, I thank you, Far, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden se things from wise and understanding and revealed m little children; [26] yes, Far, for such was your gracious will. [27] All things have been handed over me by Far, and no one knows Son except Far, and no one knows Far except Son and anyone whom Son chooses reveal him. [28] Come me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. [29] Take yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. [30] For yoke is easy, and burden is light. [1] At that time Jesus went through grainfields on Sabbath. His disciples were hungry, and y began pluck heads of grain and eat. [2] But when Pharisees saw it, y said him, Look, your disciples are doing what is not lawful do on Sabbath. [3] He said m, Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, and those who were with him: [4] how he entered house of God and ate bread of Presence, which it was not lawful for him eat nor for those who were with him, but only for priests? [5] Or have you not read in Law how on Sabbath priests in temple profane Sabbath and are guiltless? [6] I tell you, something greater than temple is here. [7] And if you had known what this means, I desire mercy, and not sacrifice, you would not have condemned guiltless. [8] For Son of Man is lord of Sabbath.
