We all know what it feels like to ask yourself this question. Whether you re second-guessing a job you took, a relationship you find yourself in the middle of, or what you ordered for lunch, you know the sensation of having the sinking feeling that you might have made a mistake. Being a disciple of Jesus is no different. The Gospel of Luke was written to a man named Theophilus. We don't know a lot of details about Theophilus, but he appears to be a Christian who is having second thoughts about the life of discipleship he has embarked upon. This is how Luke addresses him in the book s beginning: [I ve written this for you], Theophilus, that you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught. Apparently, Theophilus is questioning his decision to become a Christian. Living in a culture that is marked by ruthless power politics, a relatively weak and often hidden church, and an almost incessant questioning and dismissal of the Christian faith, it is easy to envision Theophilus asking questions like: Is this Jesus story really true? Is God really faithful to his promises? What does true discipleship look like? Luke went to great lengths researching and crafting his gospel to answer questions like these. He wrote it so that people like Theophilus, and us, might have confidence that God is at work in the world and in our lives through Jesus Christ. To be a disciple of Jesus is to be on the right path the path of salvation, which to Luke and his original audience meant healing or wholeness. So, whether you re a new Christian, a seasoned saint, or someone investigating Jesus for the first time, Luke is a great book for you to dive into. Let us worship. 3 REFLECTION QUOTES The passion of Christ is the victory of divine love over the powers of evil, and therefore it is the only supportable basis for Christian obedience. Once again, Jesus calls those who follow him to share his passion. How can we convince the world by our preaching of the passion when we shrink from that passion in our own lives? On the cross Jesus fulfilled the law he himself established and thus graciously keeps his disciples in the community of his suffering. The cross is the only power in the world which proves that suffering love can avenge and vanquish evil. But it was just this participation in the cross which the disciples were granted when Jesus called them to him. They are called blessed because of their visible participation in his cross. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, A Testament to Freedom Revenge and retaliation always perpetuate the cycle of anger, fear and violence. Coretta Scott King Well, you almost had me fooled Told me that I was nothing without you Oh, but after everything you've done I can thank you for how strong I have become 'Cause you brought the flames and you put me through hell I had to learn how to fight for self And we both know all the truth I could tell I'll just say this is "I wish you farewell" I hope you're somewhere prayin', prayin' I hope your soul is changin', changin' I hope you find your peace Falling on your knees, prayin' Kesha, Praying, from the album Rainbow

4 Please silence all mobile phones and electronic devices for the duration of the worship service. FOURTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST Seated Projected liturgy: We're beginning to project our liturgies (prayers, lyrics, readings, etc...). This is in addition to (not in replacement of!) our printed orders of worship. Worship is not simply cerebral, and a more open and upright posture (not just staring down at our individual orders of worship) while praying and singing can strengthen our sense of community as the body of Christ. As we strive to engage both our heads and our hearts in worship, we pray that projected liturgy will free our bodies and hearts to more expressively glorify the triune God in our services. WELCOME David Gungor, Ian Cron, and John Arndt 2015 The Brilliance PRELUDE Brother Text in bold is read together by the entire congregation. Plain text is read by one of the worship service leaders The small symbols you will see throughout these pages correspond to a "Key to Liturgy" that you can pick up in the lobby to engage children in the elements of our worship service. Our worship begins each week with a call to worship. We are gathered here today because God, our Creator, desires to have a relationship with us. Whether we realize it or not, he is the one calling us to himself today and every day. CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 112:1-5 (NIV) Praise the Lord. Blessed are those who fear the Lord, who find great delight in his commands. Their children will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed. Wealth and riches are in their houses, and their righteousness endures forever. Even in darkness light dawns for the upright, for those who are gracious and compassionate and righteous. Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely, who conduct their affairs with justice. O For A Thousand Tongues To Sing Standing Charles Wesley, 1739 Carl Gläser, 1828 arr. L. Mason, 1839 O for a thousand tongues to sing My great Redeemer s praise, The glories of God and King, The triumphs of his grace! He breaks the power of canceled sin, He sets the prisoner free; His blood can make the foulest clean, His blood availed for me. My gracious Master and God, Assist me to proclaim, To spread through all the earth abroad The honors of thy name. He speaks, and, listening to his voice, New life the dead receive, The mournful, broken hearts rejoice, The humble poor believe. Jesus! the name that charms our fears, That bids our sorrows cease; Tis music in the sinner s ears, Tis life, and health, and peace. 1

5 LECTIO SACRA Exodus 12:1-14 Seated The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, This month shall be for you the beginning of months. It shall be the first month of the year for you. Tell all the congregation of Israel that on the tenth day of this month every man shall take a lamb according to their fathers' houses, a lamb for a household. And if the household is too small for a lamb, then he and his nearest neighbor shall take according to the number of persons; according to what each can eat you shall make your count for the lamb. Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male a year old. You may take it from the sheep or from the goats, and you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month, when the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill their lambs at twilight. Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been the practice of the church for thousands of years to have portions of the bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God s word. Then they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses in which they eat it. They shall eat the flesh that night, roasted on the fire; with unleavened bread and bitter herbs they shall eat it. Do not eat any of it raw or boiled in water, but roasted, its head with its legs and its inner parts. And you shall let none of it remain until the morning; anything that remains until the morning you shall burn. In this manner you shall eat it: with your belt fastened, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand. And you shall eat it in haste. It is the Lord's Passover. For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the Lord. The blood shall be a sign for you, on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you, when I strike the land of Egypt. This day shall be for you a memorial day, and you shall keep it as a feast to the Lord; throughout your generations, as a statute forever, you shall keep it as a feast. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! INTERLUDE Lamb Of God Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection and worship. Jess Alldredge 2011 Grace Church Seattle 2

6 Confession of sin happens within the context of relationship, both with God and each other. We confess together, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ. CONFESSION OF SIN From The Worship Sourcebook God of love and justice, we long for peace within and peace without. We long for harmony in our families, for serenity in the midst of struggle. We long for the day when our homes will be a dwelling place for your love. Yet we confess that we are often anxious, we do not trust each other, and we harbor violence. We are not willing to take the risks and make the sacrifices that love requires. Look upon us with kindness and grace. Rule in our homes and in all the world; show us how to walk in your paths, through the mercy of our Savior. Amen. Standing (You are invited to confess your sins silently) RECEIVING OF GRACE Psalm 103:8-13 The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. He will not always chide, nor will he keep his anger forever. He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us. As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him. May the peace of Christ be with you! And also with you! 3

7 PRAYING THE PSALMS Psalm 119:33-48 Teach me, O Lord, the way of your statutes; and I will keep it to the end. Give me understanding, that I may keep your law and observe it with whole heart. Lead me in the path of your commandments, for I delight in it. Incline heart to your testimonies, and not to selfish gain! Turn eyes from looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways. Confirm to your servant your promise, that you may be feared. Turn away the reproach that I dread, for your rules are good. Behold, I long for your precepts; in your righteousness give me life! Praying through the Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using the prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, there will be pauses for reflection. Let your steadfast love come to me, O Lord, your salvation according to your promise; then shall I have an answer for him who taunts me, for I trust in your word. And take not the word of truth utterly out of mouth, for hope is in your rules. I will keep your law continually, forever and ever, and I shall walk in a wide place, for I have sought your precepts. I will also speak of your testimonies before kings and shall not be put to shame, for I find delight in your commandments, which I love. I will lift up hands toward your commandments, which I love, and I will meditate on your statutes. 4

Grace Kids During Worship (formerly known as Sermon Time Activity) meets in Fellowship Hall #1 during the first service sermon. INTERLUDE Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying debt, bearing punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen. OFFERING The offering is a way for members and friends of Grace Church Seattle to support the church s mission and ministry. If you are our guest today, please feel under no compulsion to give. Please let us know you ve joined us today, as well as any comments or prayer requests, by placing your welcome card in the offering basket. MUSICAL OFFERING Brother Lyrics are provided below for reflection. When I look into the face Of ene I see brother, I see brother. Forgiveness is the garment of our courage; the power to make the peace we long to know. Open up our eyes to see the wounds that bind all of humankind. May our shuttered hearts greet the dawn of life with charity and love. Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all need and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the author and perfecter of faith. Amen. Prayer for Those Searching for the Truth Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen. 6

10 PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Seated, Standing, or Kneeling Merciful Father, give grace to your church, that she would be a faithful witness to the healing power of Christ, bringing hope and the forgiveness of sins to all peoples. May those gathered here continue to be richly blessed by the proclamation of your Son s healing word. (Please pray silently for the church.) Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Righteous Lord, fill us with your Spirit amidst the difficult and challenging problems in our city and nation: gentrification, homelessness, lack of affordable housing, mental illness, mass incarceration, racial justice, loneliness, immigration, the unborn. Grant us your Spirit of wisdom, compassion, and justice. Lead us, the people of this congregation, to live lives of kindness, and sacrificial love. May we be your agents of justice and healing on earth. Let your light shine through us, our Lord! (Please pray silently for the church.) Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Standing Compassionate and healing Father, our world is broken, and we are broken. Let your justice roll down like waters, and your righteousness like an ever-flowing stream. Bind up the bleeding, comfort the broken-hearted, make straight that which is bent. Amen! 7

16 PARISH FELLOWSHIPS Since our congregation draws from a wide geographic area, the parish model provides a way for people to connect with people who live near them. There is the greatest opportunity for organic connection and time together when people are proximate to one another. We want to establish and grow community groups within each parish, and we also hope that quarterly parish fellowships provide a natural way to reach out to neighbors who aren t part of the Grace community. 19 SERMON TEXT Luke 6:27-36 (NIV) [27] But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, [28] bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. [29] If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them. [30] Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. [31] Do to others as you would have them do to you. [32] If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. [33] And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. [34] And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. [35] But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. [36] Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. 16
