Psalm 95:6 No matter who you are a committed follower of Jesus, a person curious about Christianity, or a skeptic of spirituality God is calling you to worship him. Wherever you are on the journey, we hope that you feel welcomed and at home. Perhaps you have never been to church (or not in a long time) and fear that you will not know what to do, how to act, or what to say. Be assured: God s grace is for people just like you. In our congregation, we follow an ancient liturgical pattern in our worship, drawing from the wisdom of Christians who have gone before us. Every Sunday we renew our commitment to God, offer him our prayers and gifts, confess our sins, receive forgiveness, hear from God s word, and celebrate the Lord s Supper together. We find worshipping this way liberates us from our culture's obsession with that which is novel. We have also found worshipping this way to be deeply and profoundly formative over time. If you are not used to worship, or not used to worshipping in this manner, give yourself some time to get acclimated. We also make every effort to explain things as we go along. Although we are committed to worshiping in this manner, we realize that the danger of liturgical worship is that it can become an empty ritual. We understand that, at its heart, worship is profoundly relational. It encompasses both our relationship with God and our relationship with one another. Every week we gather to meet with God, strengthen our ties to one another, and welcome strangers into our congregation. For these reasons, although our worship is structured and informed by ancient practices, we also strive for it to be warm and personal. In all of this, our great confidence is that God enjoys meeting with us. Let us worship! 4 Please silence all mobile phones and electronic devices for the duration of the worship service. Text in bold is read together by the entire congregation. Plain text is read by one of the worship service leaders The small symbols you will see throughout these pages correspond to a "Key to Liturgy" that you can pick up in the lobby to engage children in the elements of our worship service. FIRST SUNDAY IN LENT CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 96:14 O sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth! Sing to the LORD, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day. Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples! For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; he is to be feared above all gods. Standing Our worship begins each week with a call to worship. We are gathered here today because God, our Creator, desires to have a relationship with us. Whether we realize it or not, he is the one calling us to himself today and every day. 5 LECTIO SACRA Romans 5:1219 Seated Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come. Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been the practice of the church for thousands of years to have portions of the bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God s word. But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man's trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. And the free gift is not like the result of that one man's sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. For if, because of one man's trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. For as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! INTERLUDE Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection and worship. CONFESSION OF SIN Standing Our Father, you tell us to be in the world To love you and our neighbor. To pursue justice. To seek the welfare of our city. To make disciples of all nations. Forgive us for the times we have despised the world. When we have coveted our neighbors' possessions. When we have looked on those in need with contempt. When we have withdrawn from those around us. Confession of sin happens within the context of relationship, both with God and each other. We confess together, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ. Forgive us for the times we have selfishly used the world. When we have been ruled by selfambition. When we have not been good stewards of the world s resources. When we have had a posture of taking instead of giving. (Continued on next page ) 2

6 Forgive us for the times we have blended into the world. When we have not lived distinctly Christian lives. When we have been apathetic to those in need. When we have sinfully sought the approval of others. When we have been ashamed of your name. Forgive us and renew us. (You are invited to confess your sins silently) RECEIVING OF GRACE Adapted from Psalm 130 If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? But with you there is forgiveness, that you may be feared. Our heavenly Father, in his great mercy, has given his own Son to die and to rise from the dead for us, and for his sake forgives us all our sins. May the peace of Christ be with you! And also with you! 7 PRAYING THE PSALMS Psalm 32 (NIV) Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the one whose sin the Lord does not count against them and in whose spirit is no deceit. Praying through the Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using the prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, there will be pauses for reflection. When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy on me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer. Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, I will confess my transgressions to the Lord. And you forgave the guilt of my sin. Therefore let all the faithful pray to you while you may be found; surely the rising of the mighty waters will not reach them. You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance. I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you. Do not be like the horse or the mule, which have no understanding but must be controlled by bit and bridle or they will not come to you. Many are the woes of the wicked, but the Lord s unfailing love surrounds the one who trusts in him. Rejoice in the Lord and be glad, you righteous; sing, all you who are upright in heart! 4

8 Henry Francis Lyte 1846 Justin Smith 2007 Justin Smith Music Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen. Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the author and perfecter of my faith. Amen. Please let us know you ve joined us today, as well as any comments or prayer requests, by placing your welcome card in the offering basket. AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Apostles Creed What is it that we, the people of God, believe? We believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Standing The Apostles Creed is the oldest summary of Christian beliefs. It has been used in some form since at least the 3rd Century. Catholic refers to the true Christian church at all times and in all places. 10 THE SACRAMENT OF COMMUNION Seated Allergenfree communion elements (wafer ingredients: organic brown rice flour, organic white rice flour) are available at the center of the communion table. To partake, please dip in the wine cup on the table, then proceed through the line. Prayer for Receiving Communion Lord Jesus, your perfect life, death, and resurrection are the source of all blessing in this life and the life to come. As I eat this bread and drink this cup, renew me in the joy and glory of knowing and serving you. I come to this table on the basis of your merit only and not my own. As you have completely and fully offered yourself for me, I now completely and fully offer myself to you as a living sacrifice. Amen. Charles Wesley, 1739 Carl Gläser, 1828 arr. L. Mason, 1839 Communion, also called the Lord s Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal of Christians. We invite all baptized followers of Jesus Christ who acknowledge their sins against God and their neighbors and confess their need for the grace of Christ to partake of this meal. If you are a Christian and haven t been baptized, please talk with one of our pastors. We would be honored to baptize you. We hope that this time is helpful to you as you consider your relationship with Jesus Christ and with his people, the church. If you would like prayer during communion, intercessors will be available at the front of the sanctuary to pray with you. Women s Retreat 2017 March As children we often imagine life to be a series of one graduation after another sort of a straight line up leading to more and more happiness and fulfillment. There is often very little preparation for navigating the unexpected twists and turns that life takes, and we can find ourselves confused and uncertain about how to make sense of it all. The story of God is filled with women just like us who had hopes and dreams and found themselves in the midst of a story much bigger than (and very different from) their own plans. During our women s retreat this year we will talk about some of the common seasons we travel through as women and what it looks like to stay engaged with our own hearts and with the heart of God. We will also hear from three women who are in different seasons of life about the unique challenges and gifts of their season as well as the ways they have encountered God s love and invitation to them. You won t want to miss this amazing time together! Babes in arms (not crawling yet) are welcome. Today is the last day to register! To register, visit the connection center in between first and second service, or go to New community group in Greenwood A new community group has started in Parish 2 (Greenwood/Crown Hill) and would love to invite anyone who is interested to join them. The group meets on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month at 10 a.m. If you are interested in more information or attending the group, contact James Baker at jam@jbaker.org. 9 Intro To Grace Friday, March 24th and Saturday, March 25th Intro to Grace is a Friday night/saturday course offered semiannually for people who want to learn more about the vision and ministry of Grace Church Seattle. The course does not obligate you to become a member, but is necessary for membership, and it is where you will learn about the process of becoming a member. The 24th is a dinner at the Haralson home, starting at 7pm, and then the 25th will be a session at the church office from 93. Contact our Ministry Administrator, Catie Stroethoff at catie@graceseattle.org to register. We will be praying through the Psalms while sharing good food and time together. We would love to have you join us! If you are interested or would like more information, please contact Jennifer McCauley at jenben77@gmail.com. (Space limitation for kids). Adult Christian Formation Series Continues Today To many of us, the Bible can be daunting and seemingly impossible to understand. Or, for others, we can become so familiar with the story of God that it becomes somewhat disconnected from the reality of our daytoday lives. God s story is a compelling description of the reality of our human existence, and it is has everything to do with our life here and now. During this 10week class, Understanding and Living God s Story: Connecting our Head and Heart, John Haralson and Debbie Smith will retell the big story of God and connect the story to the practical issues and questions we face as we live the other six days of the week. This will be a great class for people who are new to faith as well as those who have been a Christian all their life! WAYS TO GET CONNECTED Parish fellowships What is a parish? A parish is a neighborhood or collection of neighborhoods that are proximate to each other. Each parish has a parish captain who is responsible for coordinating quarterly parish fellowships for the people who live within the parish. These fellowships are a great opportunity for new people to connect with others from Grace and for regular attendees and members to get together for an informal time of fun and fellowship together. To be added to your parish list, contact your parish captain (see page 11) or our Ministry Administrator, Catie Stroethoff at catie@graceseattle.org. Community groups What is a community group? A community group (CG) is a small group of up to 12 adults plus children that commit to journey together for the year (SeptemberMay) for the purpose of growing in relationship with God and each other. Community groups are located throughout the city, and are hosted and led by various members of the Grace community. CGs spend time in some form of study/ discussion and prayer as well as fellowship. 14 PARISH FELLOWSHIPS Since our congregation draws from a wide geographic area, the parish model provides a way for people to connect with people who live near them. There is the greatest opportunity for organic connection and time together when people are proximate to one another. We want to establish and grow community groups within each parish, and we also hope that quarterly parish fellowships provide a natural way to reach out to neighbors who aren t part of the Grace community. 15 SERMON TEXT Acts 10:129, 3435 [1] At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion of what was known as the Italian Cohort, [2] a devout man who feared God with all his household, gave alms generously to the people, and prayed continually to God. [3] About the ninth hour of the day he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God come in and say to him, Cornelius. [4] And he stared at him in terror and said, What is it, Lord? And he said to him, Your prayers and your alms have ascended as a memorial before God. [5] And now send men to Joppa and bring one Simon who is called Peter. [6] He is lodging with one Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea. [7] When the angel who spoke to him had departed, he called two of his servants and a devout soldier from among those who attended him, [8] and having related everything to them, he sent them to Joppa. [9] The next day, as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the housetop about the sixth hour to pray. [10] And he became hungry and wanted something to eat, but while they were preparing it, he fell into a trance [11] and saw the heavens opened and something like a great sheet descending, being let down by its four corners upon the earth. [12] In it were all kinds of animals and reptiles and birds of the air. [13] And there came a voice to him: Rise, Peter; kill and eat. [14] But Peter said, By no means, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is common or unclean. [15] And the voice came to him again a second time, What God has made clean, do not call common. [16] This happened three times, and the thing was taken up at once to heaven. The next day he rose and went away with them, and some of the brothers from Joppa accompanied him. [24] And on the following day they entered Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his relatives and close friends. [25] When Peter entered, Cornelius met him and fell down at his feet and worshiped him. [26] But Peter lifted him up, saying, Stand up; I too am a man. [27] And as he talked with him, he went in and found many persons gathered. [28] And he said to them, You yourselves know how unlawful it is for a Jew to associate with or to visit anyone of another nation, but God has shown me that I should not call any person common or unclean. [29] So when I was sent for, I came without objection. I ask then why you sent for me. [34] So Peter opened his mouth and said: Truly I understand that God shows no partiality, [35] but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. [17] Now while Peter was inwardly perplexed as to what the vision that he had seen might mean, behold, the men who were sent by Cornelius, having made inquiry for Simon's house, stood at the gate [18] and called out to ask whether Simon who was called Peter was lodging there. [19] And while Peter was pondering the vision, the Spirit said to him, Behold, three men are looking for you. [20] Rise and go down and accompany them without hesitation, for I have sent them. [21] And Peter went down to the men and said, I am the one you are looking for. What is the reason for your coming? [22] And they said, Cornelius, a centurion, an upright and Godfearing man, who is well spoken of by the whole Jewish nation, was directed by a holy angel to send for you to come to his house and to hear what you have to say. [23] So he invited them in to be his guests. 12
