ORDER OF WORSHIP Sunday, August 17, :00 am and 11:00 am graceseattle.org

S U M M E R P S A L M S : L E A R N I N G T O P R A Y Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before LORD, our Maker! Psalm 95:6 When we were young, our parents taught us certain patterns of speech. Our parents would teach us to say please, thank you and I m sorry. They knew lifelong importance of becoming skilled in se language forms and heart dispositions. They also knew that we were not born with ability to talk in this way. We had to learn how to do it. It works same way with God. Wher you are a Christian or not, you were not born with innate ability to know how to speak with God. Like children, we have to learn how to speak with God. We learn this language same way we learn any or languages: by hearing and repeating speech of ors. This is how Psalms are a great gift to us. God gave us Psalms to teach us how to pray. They are prayers of or people that we first hear. We n take those prayers into our own mouths and begin to repeat m. This is how we learn to dialog with God. In Psalms, we learn how to say to God, thank you!, you are simply amazing! and I am ready to follow you. We also learn how to cry out to God and say, why? and where have you gone? and I m sorry. The Psalms prepare us to engage with God in every possible life circumstance. Let us worship! WORSHIP SERVICE Sundays, 9:00 am and 11:00 am Meeting in Volunteer Park Seventhday Adventist church building (1300 E Aloha St). NURSERY Available for 6 months to 2 years during worship service. Located in Chapel, next to Sanctuary (upstairs). GRACE KIDS During Worship Service (9:00 am 12:30 pm) (23 years) Room 117 (45 years) Room 119

FOR REFLECTION I used to write I used to write letters I used to sign my name I used to sleep at night Before flashing light settled deep in my brain But by time we met By time we met times had already changed So I never wrote a letter I never took my true heart, I never wrote it down So when lights cut out I was lost standing in wilderness downtown Now our lives are changing fast Now our lives are changing fast Hope that something pure can last Hope that something pure can last Arcade Fire, We Used to Wait, from album The Suburbs "I saw a monk sitting perfectly still beneath a tree. 'How is it that you can wait so patiently in moment? I can't seem to get used to idea of doing nothing.' He broke into a grin. 'You've bought into cultural myth that when you're waiting you're doing nothing. I hope you'll hear what I'm about to tell you. I hope you'll hear it all way down to your toes. When you're waiting, you're not doing nothing. You're doing most important something re is. You're allowing your soul to grow up. If you can't be still and wait, you can't become what God created you to be.'" Sue Monk Kidd, When Heart Waits Take delight in LORD, and he will give you desires of your heart. Psalm 37

Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been practice of church for thousands of years to have portions of bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God s word. LECTIO SACRA I Thessalonians 5:111 Now concerning times and seasons, brors and sisters, you have no need to have anything written to you. For you yourselves are fully aware that day of Lord will come like a thief in night. While people are saying, There is peace and security, n sudden destruction will come upon m as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and y will not escape. But you are not in darkness, brors and sisters, for that day to surprise you like a thief. For you are all children of light, children of day. We are not of night or of darkness. So n let us not sleep, as ors do, but let us keep awake and be sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, are drunk at night. But since we belong to day, let us be sober, having put on breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet hope of salvation. For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us so that wher we are awake or asleep we might live with him. Therefore encourage one anor and build one anor up, just as you are doing. The word of Lord! Thanks be to God! Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection and worship. INTERLUDE O R D E R O F W O R S H I P 2

CONFESSION OF SIN Almighty and merciful God, we have sinned against you, S T A N D I N G in thought, word, and deed. We have not loved you with all our hearts. We have not loved ors as you have loved us. We are truly sorry. Adapted from A New Zealand Prayer Book Confession of sin happens within context of relationship, both with God and each or. We confess toger, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ. In your mercy, forgive what we have been, help us to amend what we are, and direct what we shall be. That we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, through Jesus Christ our Savior. (You are invited to confess your sins silently.) RECEIVING OF GRACE Colossians 1:1214 God has qualified us to share in inheritance of saints of light. God has delivered us from domain of darkness and transferred us to kingdom of in whom we have redemption, forgiveness of our sins. May Lord be with you! And also with you! his beloved Son, O R D E R O F W O R S H I P 3

PRAYING THE PSALMS Commit your way to Lord; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteous reward shine like dawn, your vindication like noonday sun. Be still before Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in ir ways, when y carry out ir wicked schemes. Psalm 37:511, 2529 (NIV) Praying through Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, re will be pauses for reflection. Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret it leads only to evil. For those who are evil will be destroyed, but those who hope in Lord will inherit land. A little while, and wicked will be no more; though you look for m, y will not be found. But meek will inherit land and enjoy peace and prosperity. I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen righteous forsaken or ir children begging bread. They are always generous and lend freely; ir children will be a blessing. Turn from evil and do good; n you will dwell in land forever. For Lord loves just and will not forsake his faithful ones. Wrongdoers will be completely destroyed; offspring of wicked will perish. The righteous will inherit land and dwell in it forever. O R D E R O F W O R S H I P 5

S E R M O N T E X T 1 Do not fret because of those who are evil or be envious of those who do wrong; 2 for like grass y will soon wir, like green plants y will soon die away. 3 Trust in Lord and do good; dwell in land and enjoy safe pasture. 4 Take delight in Lord, and he will give you desires of your heart. 5 Commit your way to Lord; trust in him and he will do this: 6 He will make your righteous reward shine like dawn, your vindication like noonday sun. 7 Be still before Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in ir ways, when y carry out ir wicked schemes. 8 Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret it leads only to evil. 9 For those who are evil will be destroyed, but those who hope in Lord will inherit land. 10 A little while, and wicked will be no more; though you look for m, y will not be found. 11 But meek will inherit land and enjoy peace and prosperity. 12 The wicked plot against righteous and gnash ir teeth at m; 13 but Lord laughs at wicked, for he knows ir day is coming. 14 The wicked draw sword and bend bow to bring down poor and needy, to slay those whose ways are upright. 15 But ir swords will pierce ir own hearts, and ir bows will be broken. 16 Better little that righteous have than wealth of many wicked; 17 for power of wicked will be broken, but Lord upholds righteous. 18 The blameless spend ir days under Lord s care, and ir inheritance will endure forever. 19 In times of disaster y will not wir; in days of famine y will enjoy plenty. 20 But wicked will perish: Though Lord s enemies are like flowers of field, y will be consumed, y will go up in smoke. 21 The wicked borrow and do not repay, but righteous give generously; 22 those Lord blesses will inherit land, but those he curses will be destroyed. 23 The Lord makes firm steps of one who delights in him; 24 though he may stumble, he will not fall, for Lord upholds him with his hand. 25 I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen righteous forsaken or ir children begging bread. 26 They are always generous and lend freely; ir children will be a blessing. 27 Turn from evil and do good; n you will dwell in land forever. 28 For Lord loves just and will not forsake his faithful ones. Wrongdoers will be completely destroyed; offspring of wicked will perish. 29 The righteous will inherit land and dwell in it forever. 30 The mouths of righteous utter wisdom, and ir tongues speak what is just. 31 The law of ir God is in ir hearts; ir feet do not slip. 32 The wicked lie in wait for righteous, intent on putting m to death; 33 but Lord will not leave m in power of wicked or let m be condemned when brought to trial. 34 Hope in Lord and keep his way. He will exalt you to inherit land; when wicked are destroyed, you will see it. 35 I have seen a wicked and ruthless man flourishing like a luxuriant native tree, 36 but he soon passed away and was no more; though I looked for him, he could not be found. 37 Consider blameless, observe upright; a future awaits those who seek peace. 38 But all sinners will be destroyed; re will be no future for wicked. 39 The salvation of righteous comes from Lord; he is ir stronghold in time of trouble. 40 The Lord helps m and delivers m; he delivers m from wicked and saves m, because y take refuge in him.
