2 SUNDAY SCHEDULE 1300 E Aloha St First Service 9:00 am ONE WORSHIP SERVICE 9:00 AM Nursery 6 months 2 years Toddlers (2&3): Room 117 PreK: Room 119 LENT 2019 We seem to live our lives not in peace, but in pieces. Jonathan Chaplin, Living with Integrity in a Splintered World Most of us know that we should make some changes to our lives, but we often never get around to them. Many of us would like to eat better, exercise (at least a little), pray more, and read Scripture more. But somehow these things all seem to get pushed to the back burner so we can focus our attention and energy on what has been called the tyranny of the urgent. This is the gift of the season of Lent, the 40day period of time leading up to the 7week Easter Season that begins on Easter Sunday. The church, in its wisdom, knows how we can tend to get offtrack over the course of a year. So, every spring, we are invited to enter into the disciplines of the Lenten season so that we might get back on course (for disciplines, think intentional practices). This means that Lent is not a time to pretend like we re spiritual superstars. Truth be told, when we begin to engage or, reengage in spiritual disciplines like fasting, morning and evening prayer, tithing, and corporate worship, we quickly begin to see how much opposition we have in our own hearts towards doing the very things that will help us grow as followers of Christ. In other words, we actually need the reboot opportunity that Lent offers every year precisely because we re not spiritual superstars. Also, it s important to know that the appropriate posture to take towards these disciplines is progress and growth, not shame and guilt. We re not doing them so that we can persuade God that he can finally accept us as his children. Instead, we pick up these practices with the hopes that God will bless us with new growth and new experiences of his mercy and goodness. So, we invite you to join the leaders at Grace and enter into Lent this year. We have put together a brief guide (available at the Welcome Center) that we prayerfully hope will help you make progress in your life with God. Each week has a Scriptural and thematic focus that will go along with Sunday s sermon text. May God bless you over the upcoming weeks. Let us worship! 3 REFLECTION QUOTES Money can't buy you happiness, but it can buy you a yacht big enough to pull up right alongside it. David Lee Roth Our daily lives are filled with these small choices small at first, but over time, becoming a deep dependence on strategies that preserve our sense of action while minimizing our sense of risk. The church once enumerated seven deadly sins lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy, and pride. Most of them are ways of pursuing authority without vulnerability. Sex without commitment (lust), food without moderation (gluttony), goods without limit (greed), anger without compassion (wrath), and above all the pursuit of autonomous, godlike power (pride) all these are forms of what Scripture calls, most comprehensively, idolatry, the use of created things to pursue godlike power without risk or limit...all these are just variations on the promises that accompanied the very first idol, the fruit proffered by the serpent in the Garden: "You will be like God" unlimited authority and, "You will not die" none of that vulnerable creaturely dependence. 4 Please silence all mobile phones and electronic devices for the duration of the worship service. Text in bold is read together by the entire congregation. Plain text is read by one of the worship service leaders The small symbols you will see throughout these pages correspond to a "Key to Liturgy". Our worship begins each week with a call to worship. We are gathered here today because God, our Creator, desires to have a relationship with us. Whether we realize it or not, he is the one calling us to himself today and every day. FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT WELCOME CALL TO WORSHIP From The Worship Sourcebook; Based on Isaiah 43:1921 Lord God, in this season of Lent we look forward to our remembrance of Jesus death and our celebration of his resurrection. We pray that your Spirit will renew in us today our anticipation for these events and our awareness that Jesus death and resurrection are a sure source of hope and life. In the power of Jesus name we pray. Amen. Let us worship God, who has done great things. We rejoice in our God, who made a way through the desert of this world. Let us worship God, who has caused streams of mercy to flow in the wasteland. We are the people God has formed through Christ; we worship him, and we rejoice! Let us worship God in spirit and in truth. We praise God for the grace that has saved us. Alleluia! We rejoice! 5 LECTIO SACRA Luke 4:113 Seated And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry. The devil said to him, If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread. And Jesus answered him, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone. And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, and said to him, To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours. And Jesus answered him, It is written, Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been the practice of the church for thousands of years to have portions of the bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God s word. You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve. And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, for it is written, He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you, and On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone. And Jesus answered him, It is said, You shall not put the Lord your God to the test. And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time. This is the Word of the Lord Thanks be to God! INTERLUDE Lord, Who Throughout These Forty Days Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection and worship. 6 Confession of sin happens within the context of relationship, both with God and each other. We confess together, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ. CONFESSION OF SIN Adapted from The Worship Sourcebook Most merciful God whose Son, Jesus Christ, was tempted in every way, yet was without sin, we confess before you our own sinfulness; we have hungered after that which does not satisfy; we have hoarded the gifts you have given us; we have compromised with evil; we have doubted your power to protect us. Forgive our lack of faith; have mercy on our weakness. Restore in us such trust and love that we may walk in your ways and delight in doing your will. Amen. 7 RECEIVING OF GRACE Based on Psalm 91:1415 (NRSV) Those who love me, I will deliver, says the Lord; I will protect those who know name. When they call to me, I will answer them; I will be with them in trouble, I will rescue them and honor them and show them salvation. Receive the good news of the gospel: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. May the peace of Christ be with you! And also with you! HYMN OF GOD S LOVE Amazing Grace Amazing grace! How sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found; Was blind, but now I see. Through many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come; Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home. John Newton, 1779 New Britain, 1831 (last stanza author unknown) Twas grace that taught heart to fear, And grace fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed. PRAYING THE PSALMS Psalm 91:12, 916 When we ve been there ten thousand years, Bright shining as the sun, We ve no less days to sing God s praise Than when we d first begun. He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, My refuge and fortress, God, in whom I trust. Praying through the Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using the prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, there will be pauses for reflection. Because you have made the Lord your dwelling place the Most High, who is refuge no evil shall be allowed to befall you, no plague come near your tent. For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone. You will tread on the lion and the adder; the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot. (Continued on the next page). 4

9 WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS Seated PASSING THE PEACE As recipients of God's grace, we gladly receive peace from him. In response to his grace, we also extend that grace to one another with a handshake or a hug. Traditionally, Christians have greeted one another during this time in the service with the phrase, "May the peace of Christ be with you" and receive back the greeting "And also with you." GOSPEL LESSON Cultivating Financial Dependence Deuterono 26:114 Rev. John Haralson Sermons can be streamed and downloaded at graceseattle.org/resources. Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying debt, bearing punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen. Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all need and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the author and perfecter of faith. Amen. INTERLUDE Prayer for Those Searching for the Truth Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen. OFFERING The offering is a way for members and friends of Grace Church Seattle to support the church s mission and ministry. 10 PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE: A LENTEN PRAYER Based on Psalm 121 Maker of heaven and earth, you are our help; we lift our eyes to you. As we walk this Lenten journey, you watch over our coming and our going both now and forevermore. You are our shade and our protection; you keep us from all harm. We ask that you strengthen and guide us as we do your work in your world. Convict us of our disobedience, and enable us to obey your call in our lives. Open our ears to the cry of the poor. Teach us to seek and to do justice, to stay in the path of understanding, to pursue righteousness and love in the strong name of your Son, our Savior. Amen. Standing Henri A. 11 THE SACRAMENT OF COMMUNION Seated Communion, also called the Lord s Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal of Christians. We invite all baptized followers of Jesus Christ who acknowledge their sins against God and their neighbors and confess their need for the grace of Christ to partake of this meal. If you are a Christian and haven t been baptized, please talk with one of our pastors. We would be honored to baptize you. We hope that this time is helpful to you as you consider your relationship with Jesus Christ and with his people, the church. If you would like prayer during communion, intercessors will be available at the front of the sanctuary to pray with you. The Sursum Corda The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is meet and right to do so. Prayer for Receiving Communion Lord Jesus, your perfect life, death, and resurrection are the source of all blessing in this life and the life to come. As I eat this bread and drink this cup, renew me in the joy and glory of knowing and serving you. I come to this table on the basis of your merit only and not own. As you have completely and fully offered yourself for me, I now completely and fully offer self to you as a living sacrifice. Amen. Allergenfree communion elements (wafer ingredients: organic brown rice flour, organic white rice flour) are available at the center of the communion table. To partake, please dip in the wine cup on the table, then proceed through the line. It is right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: The Sursum Corda (Latin: Lift up your hearts ) is an opening dialogue in the Eucharistic liturgy of the Christian Church and dates back (at least) to the third century. This text encourages the church to come with thankfulness and joy to the Lord s table. It is an invitation to join the voices of the church with the heavenly host, who are continually proclaiming the Father s glory (Isaiah 6:13; Matthew 21:9). 8

19 SERMON TEXT Deuterono 26:114 [1] When you come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance and have taken possession of it and live in it, [2] you shall take some of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which you harvest from your land that the Lord your God is giving you, and you shall put it in a basket, and you shall go to the place that the Lord your God will choose, to make his name to dwell there. [3] And you shall go to the priest who is in office at that time and say to him, I declare today to the Lord your God that I have come into the land that the Lordswore to our fathers to give us. [4] Then the priest shall take the basket from your hand and set it down before the altar of the Lord your God. [5] And you shall make response before the Lord your God, A wandering Aramean was father. And he went down into Egypt and sojourned there, few in number, and there he became a nation, great, mighty, and populous. [6] And the Egyptians treated us harshly and humiliated us and laid on us hard labor. [7] Then we cried to the Lord, the God of our fathers, and the Lord heard our voice and saw our affliction, our toil, and our oppression. [8] And the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with great deeds of terror, with signs and wonders. [9] And he brought us into this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. [10] And behold, now I bring the first of the fruit of the ground, which you, O Lord, have given me. And you shall set it down before the Lord your God and worship before the Lord your God. [11] And you shall rejoice in all the good that the Lord your God has given to you and to your house, you, and the Levite, and the sojourner who is among you. [12] When you have finished paying all the tithe of your produce in the third year, which is the year of tithing, giving it to the Levite, the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow, so that they may eat within your towns and be filled, [13] then you shall say before the Lord your God, I have removed the sacred portion out of house, and moreover, I have given it to the Levite, the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow, according to all your commandment that you have commanded me. I have not transgressed any of your commandments, nor have I forgotten them. [14] I have not eaten of the tithe while I was mourning, or removed any of it while I was unclean, or offered any of it to the dead. I have obeyed the voice of the Lord God. I have done according to all that you have commanded me. 16
