Worship Service Sundays 1300 E Aloha St First Service 9:00 AM Second Service 11:30 AM Nursery 6 months-2 years Grace Kids 2s: Room 117 3s: Fellowship Hall (FH) 4-5 years: Room years: Room 103 (first service sermon time) Christian Formation 10:30 AM Kindergarten: Room 103 1st-2nd grade: FH 3rd-4th grade: Room 110 5th-6th grade: Room 217 Youth: Room 102 Adult: Sanctuary Advent 2015 God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. I John 1:5 In elementary school, we learn that ordinary light can be split up into many colors (seven, to be exact). All of these colors combine wonderfully to give us the full spectrum light we experience each day in the rays of the sun. Full spectrum light is full, complex, and rich. It brings life and flourishing everywhere it travels. Take it away, and the world would eventually be enshrouded in death. Each year as fall turns into winter and the days get progressively shorter, many of us begin to experience the toll that darkness takes upon us. Our mood sinks and we can find it harder to go about the daily tasks of life. We begin to long for the return of the healing light of the sun. Certain types of artificial light try to mimic what the sun can do, but they are, in the end, cheap and garish substitutes for the real thing. The biblical narrative tells a story of a world that was enveloped in darkness a darkness of sin, prideful autonomy, and foolish efforts to create our own light. And, into this great darkness, God the true Light has come. Jesus is the Light that has come into our darkness. His light is full, complex and rich. He brings life and flourishing everywhere he is received. Let us worship!

FOR REFLECTION Because nerds like us are allowed to be unironically enthusiastic about stuff. We don t have to be like, 'Oh yeah that purse is okay' or like, 'Yeah, I like that band's early stuff. Nerds are allowed to love stuff, like jump-up-and-down-inthe-chair-can t-control-yourself-love it. Hank, when people call people nerds, mostly what they are saying is, 'You like stuff', which is just not a good insult at all, like 'You are too enthusiastic about the miracle of human consciousness. Unless otherwise noted, all Scripture quotations are from The Holy Bible, English Standard Version (ESV ), copyright 2001 by Crossway, a publishing ministry of Good News Publishers. John Green The sum of all we have said since we began to speak of things thus comes to this: it is to be understood that the plentitude and end of the law and of all the sacred Scriptures is the love of a Being which is to be enjoyed and of a Being that can share that enjoyment with us...that we might know this and have the means to implement it, the whole temporal dispensation was made by divine Providence for our salvation Whoever therefore thinks that he understands the divine Scriptures or any part of them so that it does not build up the double love of God and of our neighbor does not understand it at all. Augustine, On Christian Teaching What counts in your life and mine is not successes but fruits. The fruits of your life you might not see yourself. The fruits of your life are born often in your pain and in your vulnerability and in your losses. The fruits of your life come only after the plow has carved through your land. God wants you to be fruitful. The question is not, "How much can I still do in the years that are left to me? The question is, "How can I prepare myself for total surrender so my life can be fruitful? Our little lives are small, human lives. But in the eyes of the One who calls us the beloved, we are great greater than the years we have. We will bear fruits, fruits that you and I will not see on this earth but in which we can trust. Henri Nouwen, Moving from Solitude to Community

FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT CALL TO WORSHIP Standing Please silence all mobile phones and electronic devices for the duration of the worship service. Text in bold is read together by the entire congregation. Plain text is read by one of the worship service leaders. "House of Jacob" and "Zion" are biblical metaphors for the people of God. In particular, the Zion allusion emphasizes God dwelling in and among his people. Isaiah 2:2-5 (NRSV) In days to come the mountain of the LORD s house shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be raised above the hills; all the nations shall stream to it. Many peoples shall come and say, Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths. For out of Zion shall go forth instruction, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. He shall judge between the nations, and shall arbitrate for many peoples; they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the LORD! Frances R. Havergal 1874; Henri A. Cesar Malan, 1827 O Come, Messiah, Come 3 # 4 # # Oh come!oh come Mes - si - ah! 5 LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT CANDLE Christians adopted the practice of the lighting of candles during Advent in the Middle Ages. Another candle is lit during each of the four Sundays of Advent, signifying hope, love, joy, and peace. LECTIO SACRA 1 John 4:7-12 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us. The word of the Lord! Thanks be to God! Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been the practice of the church for thousands of years to have portions of the bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God s word. Propitiation means a sacrifice that bears God s wrath and turns it to favor, and that is also the meaning of the English word propitiation. As the perfect sacrifice for sin, Jesus turns away God s wrath. ESV Study Bible INTERLUDE Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection and worship. 2

Standing CONFESSION OF SIN Confession of sin happens within the context of relationship, both with God and each other. We confess together, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ. Holy God and reconciling King, As a father has compassion on his children, so You have compassion on those who fear You; for You know how we are formed, and remember that we are dust. Forgive our sins. They are many. Where we have not loved our neighbors; where we have been silent and indifferent to violence, injustice, racism and human suffering; And where we have failed to see Jesus in those in need, be merciful and forgive. Where we have not loved the stranger, the prisoner, the lost or the marginalized, be merciful and forgive. Melt our hearts for our broken world, and turn our indifference into compassion, until you make heaven and earth one. Through Jesus. (You are invited to confess your sins silently.) 7 RECEIVING OF GRACE I John 1:8-9 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. May the peace of Christ be with you! And also with you! HYMN OF GOD S LOVE Amazing Grace Amazing grace! How sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found; Was blind, but now I see. John Newton 1779 (last stanza author unknown), New Britain 1831 Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed. Through many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come; Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home. When we ve been there ten thousand years, Bright shining as the sun, We ve no less days to sing God s praise Than when we d first begun. 4

PRAYING THE PSALMS Psalm 80:1-7 Praying through the Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using the prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, there will be pauses for reflection. Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, you who lead Joseph like a flock. You who are enthroned upon the cherubim, shine forth. Before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh, stir up your might and come to save us! Restore us, O God; let your face shine, that we may be saved! O LORD God of hosts, how long will you be angry with your people's prayers? You have fed them with the bread of tears and given them tears to drink in full measure. You make us an object of contention for our neighbors, and our enemies laugh among themselves. Restore us, O God of hosts; let your face shine, that we may be saved! Grace Kids order of worship is available in the lobby for kids 5 years old and up. No sermon time activity today. Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the author and perfecter of my faith. Amen. INTERLUDE OFFERING The offering is a way for members and friends of Grace Church Seattle to support the church s mission and ministry. If you are our guest today, please feel under no compulsion to give. Please let us know you ve joined us today, as well as any comments or prayer requests, by placing your welcome card in the offering basket. Prayer for Those Searching for the Truth Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen. 6

PRAYER FOR UNION WITH GOD Kari Christina Reeves, Canyon Road: A Book of Prayer Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen. God, give me the ability to hear your voice. Break through the wall of silence, and enter into the deepest chambers of my heart. Give me grace, and give me comfort. I want you to teach me what it means to worship you. As I sit in your presence by faith, I want to understand what it means to know you. (Silent reflection) You have broken into my world, so break into my heart afresh. I grant you access, so please come in and meet me now. I don t know how to ask for this or how to describe it; I simply want to be close to you. Where I have constructed walls to protect myself from you, overcome them. (Silent reflection) As I learn what it means to worship, grant me freedom. Give me the power and guidance of your Spirit. As I feel my way through these new experiences, give me a special sense of your love, Jesus. Support my faith with your faith. Support my commitment with your commitment. Support my new life with your own. Free me from my inhibitions, and give me faith to believe that you hear when I pray. I also ask, God, that you grant me the privilege of hearing you sing over me. I want to know your love. (Silent reflection) Standing Father, give me the power of your Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit, show me Jesus. Jesus, show me the Father. Amen. 7

We invite all baptized followers of Jesus Christ who acknowledge their sins against God and their neighbors and confess their need for the grace of Christ to partake of this meal. If you are a Christian and haven t been baptized, please talk with one of our pastors. We would be honored to baptize you. We hope that this time is helpful to you as you consider your relationship with Jesus Christ and with his people, the church. Allergen-free communion elements (wafer ingredients: organic brown rice flour, organic white rice flour) are available at the center of the communion table. To partake, please dip in the wine cup on the table, then proceed through the line. Prayer for Receiving Communion Lord Jesus, your perfect life, death, and resurrection are the source of all blessing in this life and the life to come. As I eat this bread and drink this cup, renew me in the joy and glory of knowing and serving you. I come to this table on the basis of your merit only and not my own. As you have completely and fully offered yourself for me, I now completely and fully offer myself to you as a living sacrifice. Amen. 8

SERMON TEXT I John 2:3-11, 4:7-12 [3] And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. [4] Whoever says I know him but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, [5] but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: [6] whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked. [7] Beloved, I am writing you no new commandment, but an old commandment that you had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word that you have heard. [8] At the same time, it is a new commandment that I am writing to you, which is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining. [9] Whoever says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness. [10] Whoever loves his brother abides in the light, and in him there is no cause for stumbling. [11] But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes. [7] Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. [8] Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. [9] In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. [10] In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. [11] Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. [12] No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.
