Advent Week 4 Order of Worship December 18, :00 am and 11:30 am

SUNDAY SCHEDULE 1300 E Aloha St First Service 9:00am Christian Formation 10:30am Second Service 11:30am FIRST SERVICE Nursery 6 months - 2 years Grace Kids 2s: Room 117 3s: Fellowship Hall (FH) 4s/5s (PreK): Room 119 Kinder-8 years old Room 103 Sermon Activity CHRISTMAS PAGEANT 10:30am Sanctuary THE WAY OF PEACE: ADVENT 2016 Because of the tender mercy of our God, whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace. Luke 1:78-79 Dear Friends, Peace is an often misunderstood word. By peace, we can sometimes mean the absence of conflict. When a war ends, nations sign a peace treaty. Similarly, when we are stressed out, we long for some peace and quiet, and by this we mean an absence of turmoil or tension. By peace, we can also mean something (or someone) that brings us happiness. At peace can describe how we feel after we have eaten a really great meal or finished an excellent novel. SECOND SERVICE Nursery 6 months - 3 years But, in the Bible, peace is much deeper, richer and far more complex. Peace describes a rich and fertile situation where all relationships are flourishing in the way God intended them to be. When the Bible uses the concept peace, it means many things happening at once: People in right relationship with God, their Creator and Savior, People in right relationship with themselves, People in right relationship with one another, and People in right relationship with creation. Finding the path to peace is so often hard to do. Our culture is constantly offering to us lifestyles and choices that promise peace, but in reality can never deliver on those promises. And, because of our own uncertainty, pride, and shame, we can often be easily led astray in our search for peace. This year during Advent* and Christmas, we are going to be looking at texts from the Old Testament prophet Isaiah. God spoke through Isaiah giving Israel, the ancient people of God, and ultimately us his promises of peace. God desires for us to walk in his ways of peace, and shows us the way to peace requires us to draw near to him. So, don t give into the temptation towards self-protective cynicism or mindless holiday distraction. This Advent season, let us come to the Lord and ask him to show us the way. Let us worship! (*For those new to the church calendar, Advent is the 4 weeks immediately preceding Christmas Day. It is a time when we look back to Jesus first coming over 2,000 years ago to begin his reign of peace. It is also a time for us to look forward to his return, when he will consummate his kingdom of peace here on earth.)

REFLECTION QUOTES And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself. Jesus, John 12:32 Christ is his own attraction, Christ is the only trumpet that you want to trumpet Christ. Preach the gospel, and the congregation will come of themselves. Charles Spurgeon Something has me Oh something has me Acting like someone I don't wanna be Something has me Oh something has me Acting like someone I know isn't me Ill with want and poisoned by this ugly greed The Avett Brothers, Ill with Want Is Jesus with us? Even as we stammer to name our well-rehearsed sins? Is he with us still? According to the Scriptures, he knew us as we are before he came, and still he chose to come. 4 Please silence all mobile phones and electronic devices for the duration of the worship service. FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT PRELUDE Immanuel: God With Us Seated Jess Alldredge Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh were 3 of the 12 tribes of Israel. In this Psalm, it is a way of asking God to come and visit his people here in this congregation today. Text in bold is read together by the entire congregation. Plain text is read by one of the worship service leaders The small symbols you will see throughout these pages correspond to a "Key to Liturgy" that you can pick up in the lobby to engage children in the elements of our worship service. CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 80:1-3 Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, you who lead Joseph like a flock. You who are enthroned upon the cherubim, shine forth. Before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh, stir up your might and come to save us! Restore us, O God; let your face shine, that we may be saved! Standing Our worship begins each week with a call to worship. We are gathered here today because God, our Creator, desires to have a relationship with us. Whether we realize it or not, he is the one calling us to himself today and every day. Isaac Wardell 2009 New Jerusalem Music Messiah 3 & # 4 & # & # & # Oh come!oh come Mes - si - ah! 5 LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT CANDLE Seated Christians adopted the practice of the lighting of candles during Advent in the Middle Ages. Another candle is lit during each of the four Sundays of Advent, signifying hope, love, joy, and peace. LECTIO SACRA Matthew 1:18-25 Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been the practice of the church for thousands of years to have portions of the bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God s word. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel (which means, God with us). When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! INTERLUDE Break Forth, O Beauteous Heavenly Light Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection and worship. music: Johann Sebastian Bach, arr. Lena Seeger 2

Confession of sin happens within the context of relationship, both with God and each other. We confess together, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ. CONFESSION OF SIN Adapted from 1 John 1:8-9 & A New Zealand Prayer Book Brothers and sisters, if we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. With confidence in the saving work of Christ for us, let us come and tell the truth to God and each other about our sins. Standing Almighty and merciful God, we have sinned against you, in thought, word and deed. We have not loved you with all our heart. We have not loved others as you have loved us. We are truly sorry. In your mercy forgive what we have been, help us to amend what we are, and direct what we shall be. That we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, through Jesus Christ our Savior. (You are invited to confess your sins silently) RECEIVING OF GRACE Adapted from Colossians 1 God has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints of light. God has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of our sins. May the peace of Christ be with you! And also with you! 3

LITANY OF PRAYERS FOR THE CHURCH Standing O God the Father, from whom the whole church in heaven and earth is named; O God the Son, who lives as head over the church; O God the Holy Spirit, who gathers and perfects the church; O Holy Trinity, eternal love: Have mercy upon us. That it may please you to strengthen and enlarge your holy Church in every land, and to unite all those who profess and call themselves Christians in faith and hope and charity: We ask you, good Lord. That your Church may strive, not for its own safety, but for the world s salvation, seeking only your kingdom and your righteousness: We ask you, good Lord. That you will grant to all those who lead in this congregation the spirit of wisdom, power, and love, and call many more to the work of your ministry: We ask you, good Lord. That, regardless of the praise or contempt of the world, your Church may worship and adore you in spirit and in truth: We ask you, good Lord. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. 10 11:30 AM AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Nicene Creed Standing Adopted in the 4th Century, the Nicene Creed is the most universally affirmed creed among Christian churches. What do we believe? We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. Catholic refers to the true Christian church at all times and in all places. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 7

If you are a Christian and haven t been baptized, please talk with one of our pastors. We would be honored to baptize you. We hope that this time is helpful to you as you consider your relationship with Jesus Christ and with his people, the church. If you would like prayer during communion, intercessors will be available at the front and back of the sanctuary to pray with you. Simeon s Song (The song text below is given for reflection) Lord I go in peace; your word fulfilled. My eyes have seen salvation s dawn. Allergen-free communion elements (wafer ingredients: organic brown rice flour, organic white rice flour) are available at the center of the communion table. To partake, please dip in the wine cup on the table, then proceed through the line. Prayer for Receiving Communion Lord Jesus, your perfect life, death, and resurrection are the source of all blessing in this life and the life to come. As I eat this bread and drink this cup, renew me in the joy and glory of knowing and serving you. I come to this table on the basis of your merit only and not my own. As you have completely and fully offered yourself for me, I now completely and fully offer myself to you as a living sacrifice. Amen. 14 ONGOING EVENTS & GROUPS SERVING Adult Christian Formation Series Will Resume January 22nd. To many of us, the Bible can be daunting and seemingly impossible to understand. Or, for others, we can become so familiar with the story of God that it becomes somewhat disconnected from the reality of our day-to-day lives. God s story is a compelling description of the reality of our human existence, and it is has everything to do with our life here and now. During this 10-week class, Understanding and Living God s Story: Connecting our Head and Heart, John Haralson and Debbie Smith will re-tell the big story of God and connect the story to the practical issues and questions we face as we live the other six days of the week. This will be a great class for people who are new to faith as well as those who have been a Christian all their life! 15 PARISH FELLOWSHIPS Since our congregation draws from a wide geographic area, the parish model provides a way for people to connect with people who live near them. There is the greatest opportunity for organic connection and time together when people are proximate to one another. We want to establish and grow community groups within each parish, and we also hope that quarterly parish fellowships provide a natural way to reach out to neighbors who aren t part of the Grace community. If you are uncertain which parish your neighborhood is in, contact Debbie Smith at debbie@graceseattle.org. 19 SERMON TEXT Isaiah 7:1-17 [1] In the days of Ahaz the son of Jotham, son of Uzziah, king of Judah, Rezin the king of Syria and Pekah the son of Remaliah the king of Israel came up to Jerusalem to wage war against it, but could not yet mount an attack against it. [2] When the house of David was told, Syria is in league with Ephraim, the heart of Ahaz and the heart of his people shook as the trees of the forest shake before the wind. [3] And the LORD said to Isaiah, Go out to meet Ahaz, you and Shear-jashub your son, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool on the highway to the Washer's Field. [4] And say to him, Be careful, be quiet, do not fear, and do not let your heart be faint because of these two smoldering stumps of firebrands, at the fierce anger of Rezin and Syria and the son of Remaliah. [5] Because Syria, with Ephraim and the son of Remaliah, has devised evil against you, saying, [6] Let us go up against Judah and terrify it, and let us conquer it for ourselves, and set up the son of Tabeel as king in the midst of it, [7] thus says the Lord GOD: It shall not stand, and it shall not come to pass. [8] For the head of Syria is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin. And within sixty-five years Ephraim will be shattered from being a people. [9] And the head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is the son of Remaliah. If you are not firm in faith, you will not be firm at all. [10] Again the LORD spoke to Ahaz: [11] Ask a sign of the LORD your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven. [12] But Ahaz said, I will not ask, and I will not put the LORD to the test. [13] And he said, Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary men, that you weary my God also? [14] Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. [15] He shall eat curds and honey when he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good. [16] For before the boy knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land whose two kings you dread will be deserted.
