1 Lord, who throughout se forty days for us did fast pray, teach us with you to mourn our sins close by you to stay. As you with Satan did contend, did victory win, O give us strength in you to fight, in you to conquer sin. As you did hunger did thirst, so teach us, gracious Lord, to die to self, so to live by your most holy Word. And through se days of penitence, through your Passiontide, forevermore, in life death, O Lord, with us a bide. Abide with us, that through this life of doubts hope pain, an Easter of unending joy we may at last attain! Lord, Who Throughout These Forty Days Claudia Frances Hernaman (1873) Lent

Jonathan Chaplin, Living with Integrity in a Splintered World Most of us know that we should make some changes to our lives, but we often never get around to m. Many of us would like to eat better, exercise (at least a little), pray more, read Scripture more. But somehow se things all seem to get pushed to back burner so we can focus our attention energy on what has been called tyranny of urgent. This is gift of season of Lent, 0day period of time leading up to 7week Easter Season that begins on Easter Sunday. The church, in its wisdom, knows how we can tend to get offtrack over course of a year. So, every spring, we are invited to enter into disciplines of Lenten season so that we might get back on course (for disciplines, think intentional practices). This means that Lent is not a time to pretend like we re spiritual superstars. Truth be told, when we begin to engage or, reengage in spiritual disciplines like fasting, morning evening prayer, tithing, corporate worship, we quickly begin to see how much opposition we have in our own hearts towards doing very things that will help us grow as followers of Christ. In or words, we actually need reboot opportunity that Lent offers every year precisely because we re not spiritual superstars. Also, it s important to know that appropriate posture to take towards se disciplines is progress growth, not shame guilt. We re not doing m so that we can persuade God that he can finally accept us as his children. Instead, we pick up se practices with hopes that God will bless us with new growth new experiences of his mercy goodness. So, we invite you to join leaders at Grace enter into Lent this year. We have put toger a brief guide (available at Welcome Center) that we prayerfully hope will help you make progress in your life with God. Each week has a Scriptural matic focus that will go along with Sunday s sermon text. May God bless you over upcoming weeks. Let us worship! 3 REFLECTION QUOTES It is important to recognize that legalism always presupposes grace. Legalism seeks to elicit gracious favor through law keeping. It begins with a picture of grace, but a reluctant grace that needs a catalyst, an act of obedience to release gift. In this way fact of obedience is like a primer that ignites an explosion of grace. Legalism is defined by its ambivalence towards grace. Legalism accepts grace with one h while attempting to control it with or. At its heart legalism is an attempt to procure grace on its own terms, to place a h on tap of grace. So legalism does not reject grace; it assumes it. But at same time is is marked by its deficient understing of that grace. This deficient understing is often expressed in an effort to make grace of God more reasonable, less extravagant, ultimately controllable (Matw 20:116). Good works done in context of a deficient belief in grace, where re remains still some idea that we move into a better state of grace with God through doing something good, are legalistic. Whenever our works derive from a sense of closing distance with God, we deny his presence already promised in gospel. We act legalistically to address what we believe is God s ambivalence toward us. J. DeWaal Dryden, A Hermeneutic of Wisdom: Recovering Formative Agency of Scripture It is, sadly, possible to be unamazed by grace of God, to take it for granted, as though it were ours by right or, worse, by merit. Thus, we disgrace grace of God. In process, melody line of Christian life is lost. Sinclair B. Ferguson, By Grace Alone Whatever happened, our first night at Hammersmith Odeon [a 1975 concert in London] became one of our 'legendary' performances, but it was also moment I learned that unless you are very aggressive, very proactive about what you want, what you've created can be coopted taken from you, whatever results. It's nothing personal. You will simply be stripped bare, for better or worse, at altar of great marketing gods, who have a dynamic an agenda guided by DNA of commerce. Bruce Springsteen, Born to Run

Carine Winkworth, 1863 LECTIO SACRA Philippians 3:17:1 Seated Brors, join in imitating me, keep your eyes on those who walk according to example you have in us. For many, of whom I have often told you now tell you even with tears, walk as enemies of cross of Christ. Their end is destruction, ir god is ir belly, y glory in ir shame, with minds set on earthly things. But our citizenship is in heaven, from it we await a Savior, Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by power that enables him even to subject all things to himself. Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been practice of church for thouss of years to have portions of bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God s word. Therefore, my brors, whom I love long for, my joy crown, st firm thus in Lord, my beloved. 7 PRAYING THE PSALMS Psalm 27 The Lord is my light my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? When evildoers assail me to eat up my flesh, my adversaries foes, it is y who stumble fall. Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war arise against me, yet I will be confident. Praying through Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, re will be pauses for reflection. One thing have I asked of Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in house of Lord all days of my life, to gaze upon beauty of Lord to inquire in his temple. For he will hide me in his shelter in day of trouble; he will conceal me under cover of his tent; he will lift me high upon a rock. And now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me, I will offer in his tent sacrifices with shouts of joy; I will sing make melody to Lord. Hear, O Lord, when I cry aloud; be gracious to me answer me! You have said, Seek my face. My heart says to you, Your face, Lord, do I seek. Hide not your face from me. Turn not your servant away in anger, O you who have been my help. Cast me not off; forsake me not, O God of my salvation! For my far my mor have forsaken me, but Lord will take me in. (Continued on next page).

8 Teach me your way, O Lord, lead me on a level path because of my enemies. Give me not up to will of my adversaries; for false witnesses have risen against me, y brea out violence.
