ORDER OF WORSHIP Sunday, September 28, :00 am and 11:30 am graceseattle.org

LEVITICUS: HOLY GOD, HOLY PEOPLE "Full humanity is humanity united to God, in communion with God." - J. Todd Billings, Union with Christ Jewish children used to begin their synagogue education by studying the book of Leviticus. For many of us, this seems unimaginable and possibly even unkind. Of all the places in the Bible to start, why in the world would you begin with Leviticus? In fact, Leviticus seems like it should be the last place in the Bible we should turn. One shrewd observer wryly pointed out that "Leviticus often becomes that graveyard where read-through-the-bible-in-a-year plans go to die." Truth be told, Leviticus is often tedious and cumbersome. It reads more like an instruction manual than a novel. Furthermore, Leviticus is seemingly irrelevant to our lives. What good does it do us to know about outdated religious practices, arcane rituals related to skin diseases, and whether or not we should eat shellfish? Surely there are better ways to spend our intellectual and spiritual energies. But, we neglect Leviticus to our peril. As we will see, the burden of the book is relational. Leviticus lays out a blueprint that gives us the shape and texture of what our lives look like when lived out in union with God. One of the most significant statements in Leviticus is this one: You shall be holy to me, for I the Lord am holy and have separated you from the peoples, that you should be mine. (Leviticus 20:26) This speaks of God's holiness, which is another way of speaking about how God is different than us or "set apart" from us. How are we to be joined to this God who is so fundamentally "other"? And, once we are in relationship with him, how do we live out this union and express our love and loyalty to God? In other words, how do we begin to reflect his holiness into the world? These are the main concerns of this rich book. Finally, it is important to know that Leviticus is a blueprint. As a blueprint, it is not the finished product. As we shall see throughout the book, the beautiful image silhouetted in Leviticus is fulfilled through the person and work of Jesus Christ. We are now being invited to live into the Christ-fulfilled reality of the pencil sketches we find in Leviticus. Let us worship! 3 "We eat to enjoy time with family and friends and to celebrate important events like weddings and birthdays and holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas. This is why God 'eats' Israel's sacrifices. He doesn't need them to stay alive, but he eats Israel's food as a sign that he is their friend. He 'eats' to make a covenant with Israel, to continue the 'wedding' feast that started at Sinai." - Peter Leithart, A House for My Name: A Survey of the Old Testament We only enter into the full life if our faith gives thanks. Because how else do we accept his free gift of salvation if not with thanksgiving? Thanksgiving is the evidence of our acceptance of whatever he gives. Thanksgiving is the manifestation of our 'Yes!' to his grace. - Ann Voskamp, One Thousand Gifts How long beneath the Law I lay, In bondage and distress. I toiled the precept to obey, But toiled without success. To see the Law by Christ fulfilled, To hear His pardoning voice, Changes a slave into a child And duty into choice. Then all my servile works were done, A righteousness to raise. Now, freely chosen in the Son, I freely choose His ways. - William Cowper, Love Constraining to Obedience

S U N D A Y, S E P T E M B E R 2 8, S I X T E E N T H S U N D A Y A F T E R P E N T E C O S T CALL TO WORSHIP This is the day that the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it! O God, we joyously come together to worship, S T A N D I N G realizing we need not summon you into our midst, for you are here. We need not call you into the secret places of our hearts, for you are there. Please silence all mobile phones and electronic devices for the duration of the worship service. Text in bold italics is read together by the entire congregation. Plain text is read by one of the worship service leaders. We need our eyes of faith to be opened, that we may see you; our ears to be unstopped, that we may hear you; our minds to be sensitive, that we may know you; our hearts to be tender, that we may receive you. Grant each of us a blessing, O Lord, according to our specific needs, in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee Henry J. van Dyke 1907, Ludwig van Beethoven 1824 Joyful, joyful, we adore thee, God of glory, Lord of love; Hearts unfold like flowers before thee, opening to the sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; drive the dark of doubt away; Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day! All thy works with joy surround thee, earth and heaven reflect thy rays, Stars and angels sing around thee, center of unbroken praise. Field and forest, vale and mountain, flowery meadow, flashing sea, Singing bird and flowing fountain call us to rejoice in thee. Mortals, join the happy chorus, which the morning stars began; Father love is reigning o er us, brother love binds man to man. Ever singing, march we onward, victors in the midst of strife, Joyful music leads us sunward in the triumph song of life. O R D E R O F W O R S H I P 1

Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been the practice of the church for thousands of years to have portions of the bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God s word. LECTIO SACRA Romans 12:1-8 (NIV) Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God s will is his good, pleasing and perfect will. For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully. The word of the Lord! Thanks be to God! Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection and worship. INTERLUDE O R D E R O F W O R S H I P 2

CONFESSION OF SIN Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord. Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool. S T A N D I N G Confession of sin happens within the context of relationship, both with God and each other. We confess together, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ. Brothers and sisters, let us confess our sins to our gracious and forgiving King. Holy and merciful God, in your presence we confess our sinfulness, our shortcomings, and our offenses against you. You alone know how often we have sinned in wandering from your ways, in wasting your gifts, in forgetting your love. Have mercy on us, O Lord, for we are ashamed and sorry for all we have done to displease Forgive our sins, and help us to live in your light and walk in your ways, you. for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Savior. (You are invited to confess your sins silently.) RECEIVING OF GRACE Adapted from Psalm 32 Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the one against whom the LORD counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit. May the peace of Christ be with you! And also with you! O R D E R O F W O R S H I P 3

(O) œ Praying through the Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using the prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, there will be pauses for reflection. PRAYING THE PSALMS Psalm 25:1-10 To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul. O my God, in you I trust; let me not be put to shame; let not my enemies exult over me. Indeed, none who wait for you shall be put to shame; they shall be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous. Make me to know your ways, O LORD; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long. O R D E R O F W O R S H I P 4

Remember your mercy, O LORD, and your steadfast love, for they have been from of old. Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions; according to your steadfast love remember me, for the sake of your goodness, O LORD! Good and upright is the LORD; therefore he instructs sinners in the way. He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble his way. All the paths of the LORD are steadfast love and faithfulness, for those who keep his covenant and his testimonies. Prayer for Those Searching for the Truth Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen. 18 C U L T I V A T E Gospel in Life Living life and believing the gospel in the 21st century can be just plain weird. At times our culture seems so far removed from the gospel that our faith seems irrelevant. We are tempted to slink into relative obscurity or fight to maintain our footing. Often the gospel of hope seems powerless to change our daily lives, much less to shape our culture. But the exact opposite is true! The gospel, the story of God redeeming His creation, give us the love, hope, and passion we need to truly love each other well, to work with passion, and to be a part of a flourishing city. Gospel in Life, by Tim Keller, is an eight-week video-based study of the gospel and how to live it out in everyday life. In week one we will study the city, our home now, the world that is. Week eight closes with the theme of the eternal city, our heavenly home, the world that is to come. In between we will learn how the gospel can change your heart, your community, and how you live in this world. 20 S E R M O N T E X T [1] When anyone brings a grain offering to the Lord, their offering is to be of the finest flour. They are to pour olive oil on it, put incense on it [2] and take it to Aaron s sons the priests. The priest shall take a handful of the flour and oil, together with all the incense, and burn this as a memorial portion on the altar, a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord. [3] The rest of the grain offering belongs to Aaron and his sons; it is a most holy part of the food offerings presented to the Lord. [4] If you bring a grain offering baked in an oven, it is to consist of the finest flour: either thick loaves made without yeast and with olive oil mixed in or thin loaves made without yeast and brushed with olive oil. [5] If your grain offering is prepared on a griddle, it is to be made of the finest flour mixed with oil, and without yeast. [6] Crumble it and pour oil on it; it is a grain offering. [7] If your grain offering is cooked in a pan, it is to be made of the finest flour and some olive oil. [8] Bring the grain offering made of these things to the Lord; present it to the priest, who shall take it to the altar. [9] He shall take out the memorial portion from the grain offering and burn it on the altar as a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord. [10] The rest of the grain offering belongs to Aaron and his sons; it is a most holy part of the food offerings presented to the Lord. [11] Every grain offering you bring to the Lord must be made without yeast, for you are not to burn any yeast or honey in a food offering presented to the Lord. [12] You may bring them to the Lord as an offering of the firstfruits, but they are not to be offered on the altar as a pleasing aroma. [13] Season all your grain offerings with salt. Do not leave the salt of the covenant of your God out of your grain offerings; add salt to all your offerings. [14] If you bring a grain offering of firstfruits to the Lord, offer crushed heads of new grain roasted in the fire. [15] Put oil and incense on it; it is a grain offering. [16] The priest shall burn the memorial portionof the crushed grain and the oil, together with all the incense, as a food offering presented to the Lord.
