2 SUNDAY SCHEDULE 1300 E Aloha St First Service 9:00 am Christian Formation 10:30 am Second Service 11:30 am FIRST SERVICE Nursery 6 months - 2 years Grace Kids Toddlers (2&3): Room 117 PreK: Room 119 GRACE KIDS CHRISTIAN FORMATION 10:30 AM Toddlers: Room 117 PreK: Room 119 Kinder/1st grade: Room 103 2nd grade: Room 120 3rd/4th grade: Room 110 5th/6th grade: Room 102 Adults: Fellowship Hall SECOND SERVICE Nursery 6 months - 3 years FALL 2018 My God, Bones what have I done? These are the iconic words of Captain James Tiberias Kirk from the movie Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, after Captain Kirk did the unthinkable for fans of the science fiction TV show and franchise Star Trek he destroyed the USS Enterprise which was symbol of inspiration, home and optimism for the characters and viewers of the beloved program. Destroying the Enterprise was like eating cornflakes without the milk, or having cheese with no bread or wine; you just can t have Kirk, Spock and Bones without the Enterprise! For those of us unfamiliar with pop culture references and shows like Star Trek, I am sure you can resonate with the tragedy and heartbreak of being displaced from home, of being disillusioned when once inspired, and pessimistic where there was once optimism. To help guide us on our life s journey, stripped of our normal leadership as a church, we are taking a break from our annual summer survey of the Psalms and spending some time with the remnant of believers in the Old Testament who were stripped of their normal leadership and displaced from their own Enterprise, the Temple of the Living God. This Summer, Grace will focus on the books of Haggai and Zechariah that speak to a people who are called to rebuild the Temple that was a symbol of inspiration to the nations, home to God and his covenant people, and a sign of optimism that one day the world would be made right again. After Kirk heartbreakingly stares at the Enterprise burning up in the atmosphere and asks, What have I done?, Bones replies, What you had to do, what you always do. Turn death into a fighting chance to live.. In Scripture, God allowed the destruction of the Temple in response to our sin, but through that death His people were reborn. In Christ, His Body, or Temple, (John 2: 19), was destroyed so that in his death we might live. This Summer as we read and reflect, may the words of Haggai and Zechariah inspire us all towards true faith and obedience. 4 Please silence all mobile phones and electronic devices for the duration of the worship service. EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST WELCOME CALL TO WORSHIP Adapted from Psalm 107: 1-3, Seated Standing Text in bold is read together by the entire congregation. Plain text is read by one of the worship service leaders The small symbols you will see throughout these pages correspond to a "Key to Liturgy" that you can pick up in the lobby to engage children in the elements of our worship service. Our worship begins each week with a call to worship. We are gathered here today because God, our Creator, desires to have a relationship with us. Whether we realize it or not, he is the one calling us to himself today and every day. Reginald Herber, 1826 John B. Dykes ( Nicaea ), 1861 Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he has redeemed from trouble and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south. Let us thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! Let us extol him in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders. 5 LECTIO SACRA Isaiah 65:17-25 Seated For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth, and the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind. But be glad and rejoice forever in that which I create; for behold, I create Jerusalem to be a joy, and her people to be a gladness. I will rejoice in Jerusalem and be glad in people; no more shall be heard in it the sound of weeping and the cry of distress. No more shall there be in it an infant who lives but a few days, or an old man who does not fill out his days, for the young man shall die a hundred years old, and the sinner a hundred years old shall be accursed. They shall build houses and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit. They shall not build and another inhabit; they shall not plant and another eat; for like the days of a tree shall the days of people be, and chosen shall long enjoy the work of their hands. They shall not labor in vain or bear children for calamity, for they shall be the offspring of the blessed of the Lord, and their descendants with them. Before they call I will answer; while they are yet speaking I will hear. The wolf and the lamb shall graze together; the lion shall eat straw like the ox, and dust shall be the serpent's food. They shall not hurt or destroy in all holy mountain, says the Lord. Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been the practice of the church for thousands of years to have portions of the bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God s word. This is the Word of the Lord! Thanks be to God! INTERLUDE Comfort, Comfort You My People Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection and worship. music: Benjamin P Smith- Chenovick 2011 arr. by Jess Alldredge, 2012 text: Johann Olearius, 1671; trans. Catherine Winkworth,

6 CONFESSION OF SIN Standing Almighty and gracious God, you have told us to love our neighbors, but we have failed. Confession of sin happens within the context of relationship, both with God and each other. We confess together, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ. Instead of loving them, we have at times wished evil upon them. Instead of building our neighbors up, we have torn them down. Instead of speaking well of them, we have gossiped. Instead of reconciling with our neighbors, we have often nurtured bitterness. Instead of giving, we have taken. Instead of forgiving, we have sought revenge. Forgive us our sins. May the love with which you love us spill over into the lives of others. (You are invited to confess your sins silently.) RECEIVING OF GRACE Zechariah 8:1 Thus says the LORD of hosts: I am jealous for Zion with great jealousy and I am jealous for her with great wrath. God's jealousy means his constant care and persistent love for us God's great wrath means deliverance from our sin, death, and the Evil One. On Christ, God's wrath is expended! In Christ, we are forgiven! With Christ, we are brought to new life! This is the Gospel! Thanks Be to God! 3

9 WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS Seated PASSING THE PEACE As recipients of God's grace, we gladly receive peace from him. In response to his grace, we also extend that grace to one another with a handshake or a hug. Traditionally, Christians have greeted one another during this time in the service with the phrase, "May the peace of Christ be with you" and receive back the greeting "And also with you." GOSPEL LESSON Playstreets Zechariah 8:1-17 Rev. Jason Davison Sermons can be streamed and downloaded at graceseattle.org/resources. INTERLUDE Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all need and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the author and perfecter of faith. Amen. Prayer for Those Searching for the Truth Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen. Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying debt, bearing punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen. 6

13 THE SACRAMENT OF COMMUNION Communion, also called the Lord s Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal of Christians. We invite all baptized followers of Jesus Christ who acknowledge their sins against God and their neighbors and confess their need for the grace of Christ to partake of this meal. If you are a Christian and haven t been baptized, please talk with one of our pastors. We would be honored to baptize you. We hope that this time is helpful to you as you consider your relationship with Jesus Christ and with his people, the church. If you would like prayer during communion, intercessors will be available at the front of the sanctuary to pray with you. The Sursum Corda The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is meet and right to do so. It is right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Sanctus & # # 4 & # # & # # & # # & # # & # # Ho - ly, ho - ly, ho - ly Lord, God of pow'r and might, heav'n and earth are full of your glo - ry. To partake, please dip in the wine cup on the table, then proceed through the line. Prayer for Receiving Communion Lord Jesus, your perfect life, death, and resurrection are the source of all blessing in this life and the life to come. As I eat this bread and drink this cup, renew me in the joy and glory of knowing and serving you. I come to this table on the basis of your merit only and not own. As you have completely and fully offered yourself for me, I now completely and fully offer self to you as a living sacrifice. Amen. The Sursum Corda (Latin: Lift up your hearts ) is an opening dialogue in the Eucharistic liturgy of the Christian Church and dates back (at least) to the third century. This text encourages the church to come with thankfulness and joy to the Lord s table. by Dan Koch 2018 The Sanctus (Latin: Holy ) is a Christian hymn text, typically sung in response to The Sursum Corda. It is an invitation to join the voices of the church with the heavenly host, who are continually proclaiming the Father s glory (Isaiah 6:1-3; Matthew 21:9). 10

We meet on the first Sunday of the month from 11:30-12:45; please come as often or seldom as you need. If you have questions please contact Lisa Behringer at cozycottage@mac.com. Two-Day Silent Retreat October 22-24, 2018 A silent retreat is an opportunity to take time away from the noise and distraction of everyday life, to rest and listen for God. Debbie (Smith) Tacke and Dan Huie will lead this weekday silent retreat at the Archbishop Brunett Retreat Center in Federal Way. It will begin on Monday evening at 6 pm and will end with lunch on Wednesday. The retreat provides time to be alone with God and to make space to enjoy conversation and communion with him. During the retreat, each retreatant will meet with a spiritual director (Debbie or Dan) to process times of prayer and to mutually discern the movements of the Holy Spirit, what is coming up in prayer and in relationship with God. Cost for the retreat is $200/person, which includes all meals and a private room. Space is limited to the first 8 people who register. To register, Debbie at debbie@graceseattle.org. 14

19 SERMON TEXT Zechariah 8:1-17 [1] And the word of the Lord of hosts came, saying, [2] Thus says the Lord of hosts: I am jealous for Zion with great jealousy, and I am jealous for her with great wrath. [3] Thus says the Lord: I have returned to Zion and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem, and Jerusalem shall be called the faithful city, and the mountain of the Lord of hosts, the holy mountain. [4] Thus says the Lord of hosts: Old men and old women shall again sit in the streets of Jerusalem, each with staff in hand because of great age. [5] And the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in its streets. [6] Thus says the Lord of hosts: If it is marvelous in the sight of the remnant of this people in those days, should it also be marvelous in sight, declares the Lord of hosts? [7] Thus says the Lord of hosts: Behold, I will save people from the east country and from the west country, [8] and I will bring them to dwell in the midst of Jerusalem. And they shall be people, and I will be their God, in faithfulness and in righteousness. [9] Thus says the Lord of hosts: Let your hands be strong, you who in these days have been hearing these words from the mouth of the prophets who were present on the day that the foundation of the house of the Lord of hosts was laid, that the temple might be built. [10] For before those days there was no wage for man or any wage for beast, neither was there any safety from the foe for him who went out or came in, for I set every man against his neighbor. [11] But now I will not deal with the remnant of this people as in the former days, declares the Lord of hosts. [12] For there shall be a sowing of peace. The vine shall give its fruit, and the ground shall give its produce, and the heavens shall give their dew. And I will cause the remnant of this people to possess all these things. [13] And as you have been a byword of cursing among the nations, O house of Judah and house of Israel, so will I save you, and you shall be a blessing. Fear not, but let your hands be strong. [14] For thus says the Lord of hosts: As I purposed to bring disaster to you when your fathers provoked me to wrath, and I did not relent, says the Lord of hosts, [15] so again have I purposed in these days to bring good to Jerusalem and to the house of Judah; fear not. [16] These are the things that you shall do: Speak the truth to one another; render in your gates judgments that are true and make for peace; [17] do not devise evil in your hearts against one another, and love no false oath, for all these things I hate, declares the Lord. 16
