Order Worship Ash Wednesday February 10, :00 pm
Worship Service Sundays 1300 E Aloha St First Service 9:00 AM Second Service 11:30 AM Ash Wednesday 2016 Tonight s Nursery 6 months 3 years What if this Lent you chose not to give up chocolate or Facebook, but chose to give up blindly sleepwalking through life? What if that meant entering in to a hard conversation with great intentionality? Reading a book that will challenge your perspective, a book on racial injustice, for instance? Creating a space for 20 min contemplative prayer in the morning evening? Praying for someone who disgusts you? There is an "easy" Lent a "costly" Lent. For some, Lent has become God's yearly weight loss or sobriety program. For some, it is the Ispendtoomuchtimeonsocialmedia guilt appeasement program. But Lent invites us to enter into a very hard conversation with ourselves. Our own choice will likely not mirror another's choice, because ours is deeply personal. This means that we ought not judge another's choice. But it ought not keep us from engaging each other honestly, with hard questions about what we need in this significant liturgical existential moment. It is a personal act repentance, which means not just turning away but turning toward which may be much harder. Turning toward uncertainty. Turning toward a hard conversation. Turning toward Flint. Turning toward a spouse who has become a stranger. Turning toward a healthy sexuality. Turning toward a forgotten stranger. Turning toward a need you've rejected. Turning toward an old gift you had that you've lost in the busyness life. Turning toward being known. Turning towards Jesus away from a more convenient God. What do you need to turn toward? Who? Chuck DeGroat
FOR REFLECTION Being unable to cure death wretchedness, people have decided not to think about these things. Pascal, Pensées Unless otherwise noted, all Scripture quotations are from The Holy Bible, English Stard Version (ESV ), copyright 2001 by Crossway, a publishing ministry Good News Publishers. Used by permission. All rights reserved. 'Remember you are dust, to dust you will return.' There s something shocking powerful about speaking the truth aloud in public this way, about the deep hunger all kinds people have to hear it. Will Hocker, a priest chaplain, told me that he sometimes gets asked for ashes by those who aren t conversant in Christian ritual. I think they sort realize it s an invitation to acknowledge limits. To bow down in public say, I m not in charge; I m not going to live forever. Sara Miles, The Daily Episcopalian blog Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom heaven. Jesus, Matthew 5:3
ASH WEDNESDAY OPENING WORDS Psalm 103:812 NIV Please silence all mobile phones electronic devices for the duration the worship service. The LORD is compassionate gracious, Slow to anger, abounding in love. He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; He does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, So great is his love for those who fear him; As far as the east is from the west, So far has he removed our transgressions from us. The song text below is given for reflection. Come All Ye Hymns from Nineveh written by Jonas Peterson 2011 Come all ye who are heavy burdened. Come all ye who are in pain. Come all ye who are heavy burdened. Come all ye who are in pain. Refrain And you may sleep in my gardens, You may stay in my house, Even forever forever, And on on! So come all ye who say "we cannot find our way." Come all ye who say "we've survived another day." Come all ye who are tired weary. Come all ye who run, trip fall. Refrain 1
Sting CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 103:1314 (NIV) As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him; for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust. 8 HOMILY A Blessed Limp Genesis 32:2232 Rev. John Haralson [22] The same night he arose took his two wives, his two female servants, his eleven children, crossed the ford the Jabbok. [23] He took them sent them across the stream, everything else that he had. [24] And Jacob was left alone. And a man wrestled with him until the breaking the day. [25] When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he touched his hip socket, Jacob's hip was put out joint as he wrestled with him. [26] Then he said, Let me go, for the day has broken. But Jacob said, I will not let you go unless you bless me. [27] And he said to him, What is your name? And he said, Jacob. [28] Then he said, Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God with men, have prevailed. [29] Then Jacob asked him, Please tell me your name. But he said, Why is it that you ask my name? And there he blessed him. [30] So Jacob called the name the place Peniel, saying, For I have seen God face to face, yet my life has been delivered. [31] The sun rose upon him as he passed Penuel, limping because his hip. [32] Therefore to this day the people Israel do not eat the sinew the thigh that is on the hip socket, because he touched the socket Jacob's hip on the sinew the thigh. Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection worship. INTERLUDE If you do not wish to receive the ashes, please feel no burden to do so. You may remain seated or kneel for prayer reflection. For those desiring to receive ashes, you may come forward by rows, starting with the front row. After returning to your seat, you may be seated or kneel for prayer reflection. INVITATION TO LENT OBSERVANCE Dear People God: I invite us to set apart this season Lent. Let it be a time turning away from sin death, turning towards God the new life he has for us in Christ. IMPOSITION OF ASHES 1 Peter 3:18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit. Let us pray. Almighty God, we have sinned against you in thought, word, deed. But let these ashes be a reminder to us Christ s sacrificial love for us. Christ became one us suffered death, So that through his death we may receive life. Amen. The song text on the following page is given for reflection 5
