WORSHIP SERVICE Sundays 1300 E Aloha St First Service 9:00 AM Second Service 11:00 AM Psalms: Learning to Pray Summer 2016 FIRST SERVICE Nursery 6 months 2 years Grace Kids 2s: Room 117 3s: Fellowship Hall (FH) 45 years: Room 119 SECOND SERVICE Nursery 6 months 3 years When we are young, our parents instruct us in certain patterns of speech. Our mothers and fathers teach us to say Please, Thank You and I m sorry. They know the lifelong importance of becoming skilled in these language forms and heart dispositions. They also know that we are not born with the ability to talk in this way. We have to learn how to do it. It works the same way with God. Like children, we all have to learn how to speak with God. We learn this language the same way we learn any other languages: by hearing and repeating the speech of others. This is how the Psalms are a great gift to us. God gave us the Psalms to teach us how to pray. They are the prayers of other people that we first hear. We then take those prayers into our own mouths and begin to repeat them. This is how we learn the Vertical Habits we need in order to develop a deep relationship with God. In the Psalms, we learn how to say to God Thank you!, You are simply amazing! and I am ready to follow you. We also learn how to cry out to God and say, Why? and Where have you gone? and I m sorry. The Psalms prepare us to engage with God in every possible life circumstance. Let us worship!

FOR REFLECTION People who want to live what I call an Instagram life versus a real life. If we re living a real life, we ve gained the understanding that getting more doesn t always lead to feeling happier. In an Instagram life, we re instead focused on making it look like we have a better life than everyone else. But even as we take our own pictures and apply filters to our world, we re flipping through other people s photo streams and feeling envious about what we see. We ask, Why isn t that our life? It s a hard cycle to break because, as friend pointed out, someone will always come along at some point and be better than you. The model Cameron Russell explored a similar disconnect in her TEDx talk about modeling. As she noted, even though models have the thinnest thighs and the shiniest hair, they re also the most insecure people you ll ever meet because they re always judged by their looks. According to Ms. Russell, a woman who started modeling at 16, she is insecure because she has to think constantly about what she looks like. So, even as we envy the beautiful people, perhaps they re envying us for looking average. Carl Richards, "Learning to Shun the Instagram Life, in The New York Times Despite the challenges presented by the widespread trivialization and dilution of the Christian gospel, I remain committed to its fundamental claim: To follow Jesus is to love your way through the darkness of the world. This love appears absurd in fact pure folly in the face of much of the world's misery and yet it yields indescribable levels of sorrow and joy, sadness and ecstasy. To be a Christian is to look at the world through the lens of the cross and thereby keep one's focus on human suffering and struggle. Unfortunately, much of American religion is market religion such as our pervasive postresurrection Christianity which identifies with the world's 'winners' based on health and wealth. In view, to be a serious Christian is to live dangerously against the grain of the world. For too much of American Christianity, to follow Jesus is to seek comfort devoid of courageous compassion and bold witness for 'the least of these. Cornel West, "Prophetic Christian Thought", from The Cornel West Reader I got a lot of things that society had promised would make me whole and fulfilled all the things that the culture tells you from preschool on will quiet the throbbing anxiety inside you stature, the respect of colleagues, maybe even a kind of lowgrade fame. The culture says these things will save you, as long as you also manage to keep your weight down. But the culture lies. Anne Lamott, in a 2003 Commencement Speech at UCBerkeley God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble. 4 SIXTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST Standing CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 100 Please silence all mobile phones and electronic devices for the duration of the worship service. Text in bold is read together by the entire congregation. Plain text is read by one of the worship service leaders The small symbols you will see throughout these pages correspond to a "Key to Liturgy" that you can pick up in the lobby to engage children in the elements of our worship service.. Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth! Serve the LORD with gladness! Come into his presence with singing! Know that the LORD, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name! For the LORD is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations. Oh! Great is our God! Brian Eicrhelberger, 2009 E on the Eye Chart (BMI) Oh! Great is our God! So we should worship greatly! No song is too loud! No orchestra too stately To hail the majesty of our King So lift your voices loud as we sing Oh! Great is our God! So let our songs be endless! So awesome his ways, how could we comprehend them? So we will make it known to our kids And we will sing about the gracious gifts you give Refrain: We will sing your praise and pour forth your fame We will bless your name Let ev ry one give thanks, because our God is great! Oh! Great is our God! And we cannot contain it! We sing from our souls, affected by his greatness His mercy covers all that heʼs made Showing his glory and his grace Refrain (3x) 1

Seated LECTIO SACRA Matthew 6:1934 Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money. Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, What shall we eat? or What shall we drink? or What shall we wear? For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been the practice of the church for thousands of years to have portions of the bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God s word. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! INTERLUDE Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection and worship. 2

Standing CONFESSION OF SIN Confession of sin happens within the context of relationship, both with God and each other. We confess together, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ. Father in heaven, you have sent your only Son into our world. Your true Light has come into our darkness. We confess that we are afraid of naming and entering into darkness. We avoid the darkness within us. Instead of dealing with our sin, we distract ourselves. Instead of facing our guilt, we make excuses and shift blame. Instead of facing reality, we drift off into numbness. We avoid the darkness around us. Instead of working for justice, we have opted for comfort. Instead of naming the sin of others, we make excuses and shift blame. Instead of entering into the pain of others, we remain uninvolved. Forgive us for the ways we have tried to deny and avoid darkness. Forgive us for doubting the power of Jesus Christ. And also with you! 3

9:00 AM Seated THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM Macy Rachel Chase Marin Elizabeth Sikes Questions from The Book of Church Order, Do you acknowledge your children s need of the cleansing blood of Jesus Christ, and the renewing grace of the Holy Spirit? 2. Do you claim God s covenant promises on their behalf, and do you look in faith to the Lord Jesus Christ for their salvation, as you do for your own? 3. Do you now unreservedly dedicate your children to God, and promise, in humble reliance upon divine grace, that you will endeavor to set before them a godly example, that you will pray with and for them, that you will teach them the doctrines of our holy religion, and that you will strive, by all the means of God s appointment, to bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord? Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. And I will establish covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you. Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household. Matthew 28:19; Genesis 17:7; Acts 16:31 To the congregation: Do you as a congregation undertake the responsibility of assisting in the Christian nurture of these children? PROMISE TO THE CHILD Adapted from the Church of Scotland Baptismal Liturgy For you, Macy and Marin, Jesus Christ came into the world. For you he lived and showed God s love. For you he suffered the darkness of Calvary and cried at the last, It is finished. For you he triumphed over death and rose to new life. For you he reigns at God s right hand. All this he did for you, though you do not know it yet. Standing CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER Adapted from The Book of Common Prayer, 1928 Lord Jesus Christ, who embraces children with the arms of mercy and makes them living members of your Church, give Macy and Marin grace to stand fast in your faith, to obey your word, and to abide in your love. Being made strong by your Holy Spirit, may they resist temptation and overcome evil, and rejoice in the life that now is, and dwell with you in the life that is to come; through your merits, O merciful Savior, who with the Father and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, world without end. Amen. 4

11:00 AM Sitting, standing, or kneeling PRAYING THE PSALMS Psalm 49 (NIV) Praying through the Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using the prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, there will be pauses for reflection. Hear this, all you peoples; listen, all who live in this world, both low and high, rich and poor alike: My mouth will speak words of wisdom; the meditation of heart will give you understanding. I will turn ear to a proverb; with the harp I will expound riddle: Why should I fear when evil days come, when wicked deceivers surround me those who trust in their wealth and boast of their great riches? No one can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom for them the ransom for a life is costly, no payment is ever enough so that they should live on forever and not see decay. For all can see that the wise die, that the foolish and the senseless also perish, leaving their wealth to others. Their tombs will remain their houses forever, their dwellings for endless generations, though they had named lands after themselves. People, despite their wealth, do not endure; they are like the beasts that perish. This is the fate of those who trust in themselves, and of their followers, who approve their sayings. They are like sheep and are destined to die; death will be their shepherd (but the upright will prevail over them in the morning). Their forms will decay in the grave, far from their princely mansions. But God will redeem me from the realm of the dead; he will surely take me to himself. Do not be overawed when others grow rich, when the splendor of their houses increases; for they will take nothing with them when they die, their splendor will not descend with them. Though while they live they count themselves blessed and people praise you when you prosper they will join those who have gone before them, who will never again see the light of life. 7 People who have wealth but lack understanding are like the beasts that perish.

As I eat this bread and drink this cup, renew me in the joy and glory of knowing and serving you. I come to this table on the basis of your merit only and not own. As you have completely and fully offered yourself for me, I now completely and fully offer self to you as a living sacrifice. Amen. 8
