ORDER OF WORSHIP Sunday, 6 July, :00 am and 11:00 am graceseattle.org

S U M M E R P S A L M S : L E A R N I N G T O P R A Y When we were young, our parents taught us certain patterns of speech. Our mothers and fathers would teach us to say Please, Thank You and I m sorry. They knew the lifelong importance of becoming skilled in these language forms and heart dispositions. They also knew that we were not born with the ability to talk in this way. We had to learn how to do it. It works the same way with God. Whether you are a Christian or not, we are not born with the innate ability to know how to speak with God. Like children, we have to learn how to speak with God. We learn this language the same way we learn any other languages: by hearing and repeating the speech of others. This is how the Psalms are a great gift to us. God gave us the Psalms to teach us how to pray. They are the prayers of other people that we first hear. We then take those prayers into our own mouths and begin to repeat them. This is how we learn the Vertical Habits needed to dialog with God. In the Psalms, we learn how to say to God Thank you!, You are simply amazing! and I am ready to follow you. We also learn how to cry out to God and say, Why? and Where have you gone? and I m sorry. The Psalms prepare us to engage with God in every possible life circumstance. Let us worship! WORSHIP SERVICE Sundays, 9:00 am and 11:00 am Meeting in the Volunteer Park Seventhday Adventist church building (1300 E Aloha St). NURSERY Available for 6 months to 2 years during the worship service. Located in the Chapel, next to the Sanctuary (upstairs). GRACE KIDS During Worship Service (9:00 am 12:30 pm) (23 years) Room 117 (45 years) Room 119

FOR REFLECTION "The antidote to exhaustion is wholeheartedness." David Whyte, Crossing the Unknown Sea This Beloved of ours is merciful and good. Besides, he so deeply longs for our love that he keeps calling us to come closer. This voice of his is so sweet that the poor soul falls apart in the face of her own inability to instantly do whatever he asks of her. And so you can see, hearing him hurts much more than not being able to hear him For now, his voice reaches us through words spoken by good people, through listening to spiritual talks, and reading sacred literature. God calls to us in countless little ways all the time. Through illnesses and suffering and through sorrow he calls to us. Through a truth glimpsed fleetingly in a state of prayer he calls to us. No matter how halfhearted such insights may be, God rejoices whenever we learn what he is trying to teach us. Teresa of Ávila, The Interior Castle "Purity of heart is to will one thing." Søren Kierkegaard

Give thanks to the LORD with the lyre; make melody to him with the harp of ten strings! Let us sing to him a new song; and play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts. For the word of the LORD is upright, and all his work is done in faithfulness. He loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of the steadfast love of the LORD. Amen! Please silence all mobile phones and electronic devices for the duration of the worship service. Text in bold italics is read together by the entire congregation. 6 Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been the practice of the church for thousands of years to have portions of the bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God s word. LECTIO SACRA Hebrews 4:110 Therefore, while the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us fear lest any of you should seem to have failed to reach it. For good news came to us just as to them, but the message they heard did not benefit them, because they were not united by faith with those who listened. For we who have believed enter that rest, as he has said, As I swore in my wrath, They shall not enter my rest, although his works were finished from the foundation of the world. For he has somewhere spoken of the seventh day in this way: And God rested on the seventh day from all his works. And again in this passage he said, They shall not enter my rest. Since therefore it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news failed to enter because of disobedience, again he appoints a certain day, Today, saying through David so long afterward, in the words already quoted, Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts. For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken of another day later on. So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for whoever has entered God's rest has also rested from his works as God did from his. The word of the Lord! Thanks be to God! Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection and worship. INTERLUDE O R D E R O F W O R S H I P 2

CONFESSION OF SIN Our loving Father, in the midst of uncertain futures, demanding jobs busy schedules, unpredictable economy, frantic lives, natural disasters, fractured families, failing health, and broken relationships, S T A N D I N G Confession of sin happens within the context of relationship, both with God and each other. We confess together, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ. instead of trusting you and entering your rest, we have been overtaken by fear, anxiety, despondency, disobedience, anger, and withdrawal. Forgive us and remind us that because of your steadfast love, rest and peace are now possible. (You are invited to confess your sins silently.) RECEIVING OF GRACE Adapted from Romans 8 God did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? In Christ, God has forgiven our sins. God has paid our debt. Nothing can separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen. O R D E R O F W O R S H I P 3

HYMN OF GOD S LOVE Amazing Grace John Newton 1779 (last stanza author unknown), New Britain 1831 Amazing grace! How sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found; Was blind, but now I see. Through many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come; Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home. Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed. When we ve been there ten thousand years, Bright shining as the sun, We ve no less days to sing God s praise Than when we d first begun. ANTIPHON & # 4 Adapted from Psalm 27, J. 9 PRAYING THE PSALMS Psalm 33:13, 1322 Shout for joy in the LORD, O you righteous! Praise befits the upright. Give thanks to the LORD with the lyre; make melody to him with the harp of ten strings! Sing to him a new song; play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts. Praying through the Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using the prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, there will be pauses for reflection. The LORD looks down from heaven; he sees all the children of man; from where he sits enthroned he looks out on all the inhabitants of the earth, he who fashions the hearts of them all and observes all their deeds. The king is not saved by his great army; a warrior is not delivered by his great strength. The war horse is a false hope for salvation, and by its great might it cannot rescue. Behold, the eye of the LORD is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his steadfast love, that he may deliver their soul from death and keep them alive in famine. Our soul waits for the LORD; he is our help and our shield. For our heart is glad in him, because we trust in his holy name. Let your steadfast love, O LORD, be upon us, even as we hope in you. 10 Prayer for Those Searching for the Truth Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen. Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the author and perfecter of my faith. Amen.
