1 ORDER OF WORSHIP Sunday, 6 May 2012, 10:00 am

2 EASTERTIDE 2012: THE MISSION OF GOD We hobbits are plain, quiet creatures. Adventures make one late for dinner. Bilbo Baggins, e Hobbit Being a Christian isn t ultimately about knowing that you re going to heaven when you die. Instead, being a Christian is about joining God in what he is doing in the world. is means placing ourselves in God s story and seeing where that adventure leads. It is a powerful invitation to step out of our comfortable lives and find ourselves immersed in the narrative God is writing. Easter is a pivotal part of God s story. On the first Easter Sunday, nearly two thousand years ago, Jesus was raised from the dead. Beginning at that precise moment in time and space, God began to remake the world. But God doesn t intend to remake the world alone. He wants us to join him. A er the resurrection, Jesus appears to his disciples and comforts them. At the same time, though, he invites them to come join him on the mission that he has begun. is is what Jesus says to his disciples in John s Gospel: Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you. (John 20:21) So is the resurrection comforting? Yes it is. It means that our debt of sin has been paid in full. But it also means we have work to do. We have the great privilege of laboring with God to see his kingdom spread. Let us worship. WORSHIP SERVICES 10:00 am Sundays. Meeting in the Volunteer Park Seventh-day Adventist church building (1300 E Aloha St). NURSERY Available for 6 months to 2 years during the service. 3 FOR REFLECTION For the essence of sin is man substituting himself for God, while the essence of salvation is God substituting himself for man. John Stott Vulnerability is the core of shame, fear and struggle for worthiness. But it s also the birthplace of creativity, of belonging, and love. Brené Brown There can be no redemption unless the truth about the world is told and justice is done. To treat sin as if were no there, when in fact it is there, amounts to living as if the world were redeemed when in fact it is not. Miroslav Volf

Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. He has given us new life and hope. He has raised Jesus from the dead. God has claimed us as his own. He has brought us out of darkness. He has made us light to the world. He is risen. He is risen indeed. Alleluia! Please silence all mobile phones and electronic devices for the duration of the worship service. Text in bold italics is read together by the entire congregation. Plain text is read by one of the worship service leaders. Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee Henry J. van Dyke 1907, Ludwig van Beethoven 1824 Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of love; Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee, opening to the sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; drive the dark of doubt away; Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day! All Thy works with joy surround Thee, earth and heaven reflect Thy rays, Stars and angels sing around Thee, center of unbroken praise. Field and forest, vale and mountain, flowery meadow, flashing sea, Singing bird and flowing fountain call us to rejoice in Thee. Mortals, join the happy chorus, which the morning stars began; Father love is reigning o er us, brother love binds man to man. Ever singing, march we onward, victors in the midst of strife, Joyful music leads us Sunward in the triumph song of life. S E A T E D O R D E R O F W O R S H I P 1

6 Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been the practice of the church for thousands of years to have portions of the Bible read during worship services. e assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God s word. LECTIO SACRA Isaiah 49:1-13 Listen to me, O coastlands, and give attention, you peoples from afar. The LORD called me from the womb, from the body of my mother he named my name. He made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me a polished arrow; in his quiver he hid me away. And he said to me, You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will be glorified. But I said, I have labored in vain; I have spent my strength for nothing yet surely my right is with the LORD, and my recompense with my God. and vanity; And now the LORD says, he who formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob back to him; and that Israel might be gathered to him for I am honored in the eyes of the LORD, and my God has become my strength he says: It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to bring back the preserved of Israel; I will make you as a light for the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth. Thus says the LORD, the Redeemer of Israel and his Holy One, to one deeply despised, abhorred by the nation, the servant of rulers: Kings shall see and arise; princes, and they shall prostrate themselves; because of the LORD, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you. Thus says the LORD: In a time of favor I have answered you; in a day of salvation I have helped you; I will keep you and give you as a covenant to the people, to establish the land, to apportion the desolate heritages, saying to the prisoners, Come out, to those who are in darkness, Appear. 7 They shall feed along the ways; on all bare heights shall be their pasture; they shall not hunger or thirst, neither scorching wind nor sun shall strike them, for he who has pity on them will lead them, and by springs of water will guide them. And I will make all my mountains a road, and my highways shall be raised up. Behold, these shall come from afar, and behold, these from the north and from the west, and these from the land of Syene. Sing for joy, O heavens, and exult, O earth; break forth, O mountains, into singing! For the LORD has comforted his people and will have compassion on his afflicted. The Word of the Lord! Thanks be to God! INTERLUDE Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection and worship. S T A N D I N G CONFESSION OF SIN Make confession to God the Lord, and let everyone acknowledge with me their sins against God and their neighbor. Our Father, you tell us to be in the world, to love you and our neighbor, to pursue justice, and to seek the welfare of our city. Forgive us for the times we have despised the world: When we have coveted our neighbors' possessions; When we have looked on those in need with contempt; When we have withdrawn from those around us. Forgive us for the times we have selfishly used the world: When we have been ruled by self-ambition; When we have not been good stewards of the world s resources; When we have had a posture of taking instead of giving. Forgive us for the times we have blended into the world: When we have not lived distinctly Christian lives; When we have been apathetic to those in need; When we have sinfully sought the approval of others. Forgive us and renew us. (You are invited to personalize your confession as you pray silently.) Confession of sin happens within the context of relationship, both with God and each other. We confess together, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ. O R D E R O F W O R S H I P 3

8 RECEIVING OF GRACE Adapted from 1 John 1:8-9 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. In Christ, we are forgiven and our sins are remembered no more. Be at peace! Amen. HYMN OF TRUST We Boast In Jesus Christ Jess Alldredge 2011 Grace Church Seattle Dead in our transgressions; held captive by our sins Spirit move within us; reset our hearts again All have sinful nature; all have selfish thoughts But God s great love and mercy brings life through Christ in us Chorus By Grace we have been saved in Jesus Christ Through faith, not by our works; we boast in Jesus Christ Mankind will disobey and follow the ways of this world Forgive us Lord we pray; you re the truth, the life, the way We are God s workmanship created in Jesus Christ To do good works in fellowship; bring darkness into light (Chorus) Bridge Bring Your kingdom, bring Your kingdom, Bring Your kingdom, Lord (Chorus) Antiphons are an ancient way of introducing and concluding the Psalms. Antiphons are sung in a call and response pattern. 9 PRAYING THE PSALMS Psalm 22:22-31 I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will praise you: You who fear the LORD, praise him! All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him, and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel! For he has not despised or abhorred the affliction of the afflicted, and he has not hidden his face from him, but has heard, when he cried to him. Praying through the Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using the prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, there will be pauses for reflection. From you comes my praise in the great congregation; my vows I will perform before those who fear him. The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the LORD! May your hearts live forever! All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations shall worship before you. For kingship belongs to the LORD, and he rules over the nations. All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship; before him shall bow all who go down to the dust, even the one who could not keep himself alive. Posterity shall serve him; it shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation; they shall come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn, that he has done it. 10 Each week, we pray for the people around us and in the world as a way to serve them according to God s will. You are welcome to sit, stand, or kneel as we pray. If you have children, please feel free to use this time to teach them to pray. S T A N D, S I T, O R K N E E L PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Father in heaven, you are good to us. Hear our prayers. For all who serve your body, the church, we ask grace and wisdom. (Pray silently for the church and those who serve.) Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. For those who have yet to put their faith in Jesus, we ask your loving pursuit. (Pray silently for those who have yet to put their faith in Jesus.) Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. For governors and rulers in every land, we ask your guidance. (Pray silently for our leaders.) Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. For people who suffer and sorrow, we ask your healing peace. (Pray silently for the suffering.) Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. S T A N D I N G Let us join together in praying as Jesus taught us to pray: Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. O R D E R O F W O R S H I P 6

Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen.

12 S T A N D I N G PRAYER OF ADORATION Adapted from The Valley of Vision: A Collection of Puritan Prayers Beloved of God, let us praise him for sending his Son for us. O Source of all good, we adore you for the gift of your Son. He is the gift of gifts: Your own dear Son, our redeemer, our substitute, our sacrifice. He is wonder of wonders: He came down to raise us up He was born like us, that we might become like him. He is love: When we cannot rise to him, he draws near on wings of grace, to raise us to himself. He is wisdom: We were far from you, with no will to return. He came, God in the flesh, to save us to the uttermost, as a man to die our death, to shed satisfying blood on our behalf, to work out a perfect righteousness for us. O R D E R O F W O R S H I P 8

20 S E R M O N T E X T John 18:1-27 When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples across the brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered. 2 Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often met there with his disciples. 3 So Judas, having procured a band of soldiers and some officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, went there with lanterns and torches and weapons. 4 Then Jesus, knowing all that would happen to him, came forward and said to them, Whom do you seek? 5 They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus said to them, I am he. Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them. 6 When Jesus said to them, I am he, they drew back and fell to the ground. 7 So he asked them again, Whom do you seek? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. 8 Jesus answered, I told you that I am he. So, if you seek me, let these men go. 9 This was to fulfill the word that he had spoken: Of those whom you gave me I have lost not one. 10 Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant and cut off his right ear. (The servant's name was Malchus.) 11 So Jesus said to Peter, Put your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me? priest, he entered with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest, 16 but Peter stood outside at the door. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the servant girl who kept watch at the door, and brought Peter in. 17 The servant girl at the door said to Peter, You also are not one of this man's disciples, are you? He said, I am not. 18 Now the servants and officers had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves. Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself. 19 The high priest then questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching. 20 Jesus answered him, I have spoken openly to the world.
