Psalm 95:6 No matter who you are a committed follower of Jesus, a person curious about Christianity, or a skeptic of spirituality God is calling you to worship him. Wherever you are on the journey, we hope that you feel welcomed and at home. Perhaps you have never been to church (or not in a long time) and fear that you will not know what to do, how to act, or what to say. Be assured: God s grace is for people just like you. In our congregation, we follow an ancient liturgical pattern in our worship, drawing from the wisdom of Christians who have gone before us. Every Sunday we renew our commitment to God, offer him our prayers and gifts, confess our sins, receive forgiveness, hear from God s word, and celebrate the Lord s Supper together. We find worshipping this way liberates us from our culture's obsession with that which is novel. We have also found worshipping this way to be deeply and profoundly formative over time. If you are not used to worship, or not used to worshipping in this manner, give yourself some time to get acclimated. We also make every effort to explain things as we go along. Although we are committed to worshiping in this manner, we realize that the danger of liturgical worship is that it can become an empty ritual. We understand that, at its heart, worship is profoundly relational. It encompasses both our relationship with God and our relationship with one another. Every week we gather to meet with God, strengthen our ties to one another, and welcome strangers into our congregation. For these reasons, although our worship is structured and informed by ancient practices, we also strive for it to be warm and personal. In all of this, our great confidence is that God enjoys meeting with us. Let us worship! 3 REFLECTION QUOTES The disciplines of seeking first the kingdom of God are the foundation for faithful behavior. As we begin the week and the day in prayer, our behavior flows out of prayer. We are more mindful of living for the glory of God and the good of others. As we commit our money to God with the tithe, we develop a greater detachment from money and from covetousness. We learn to live life generously, with an open hand. We receive the blessings God gives to the generous. As Jesus said, 'Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.' (Luke 6:38) Bishop Stephen Scarlett A healthy church will help you get over yourself...god loves you with infinite, unconditional love, we learn in church, but to experience that love fully, you have to get over yourself excessive concern with your own welfare, your own family, your own ambitions or failures. When you enter into the life of a church, you are freed to be a servant. It is true that you can discover the joy of generosity and service elsewhere. But healthy churches are reliable places to find those opportunities, every week at the back of the bulletin or in the newsletter or on the website, to witness the fruits of the Spirit, who brings humble efforts to fruition, and to be reminded by story, song, and your neighbor s example what Christlike looks like. Marilyn McEntyre, "Choosing Church" in Comment Magazine. In the vacant places We will build with new bricks There are hands and machines And clay for new brick And lime for new mortar Where the bricks are fallen We will build with new stone Where the beams are rotten We will build with new timbers Where the word is unspoken We will build with new speech There is work together A Church for all And a job for each Every man to his work. T.S. Eliot, Choruses from 'The Rock'

4 Please silence all mobile phones and electronic devices for the duration of the worship service. TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST WELCOME Seated Text in bold is read together by the entire congregation. Plain text is read by one of the worship service leaders The small symbols you will see throughout these pages correspond to a "Key to Liturgy" that you can pick up in the lobby to engage children in the elements of our worship service. Our worship begins each week with a call to worship. We are gathered here today because God, our Creator, desires to have a relationship with us. Whether we realize it or not, he is the one calling us to himself today and every day. Adapted from Psalm 27 Jess Alldredge 2012 Grace Church Seattle CALL TO WORSHIP Adapted from Psalm 27 & John 4:23 Let us worship God, our light and our salvation. The Lord is the stronghold of our lives. We desire to live in God s house and to seek God in his holy temple. We have come with shouts of joy, to sing and to make music to the Lord. Let us worship God in spirit and in truth. Teach us your ways and make straight our paths in this hour of worship and always. 5 LECTIO SACRA Joshua 24:1-3a, Seated Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem and summoned the elders, the heads, the judges, and the officers of Israel. And they presented themselves before God. And Joshua said to all the people, Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, Long ago, your fathers lived beyond the Euphrates, Terah, the father of Abraham and of Nahor; and they served other gods. Then I took your father Abraham from beyond the River and led him through all the land of Canaan, and made his offspring many. Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been the practice of the church for thousands of years to have portions of the bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God s word. Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. Then the people answered, Far be it from us that we should forsake the Lord to serve other gods, for it is the Lord our God who brought us and our fathers up from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and who did those great signs in our sight and preserved us in all the way that we went, and among all the peoples through whom we passed. And the Lord drove out before us all the peoples, the Amorites who lived in the land. Therefore we also will serve the Lord, for he is our God. But Joshua said to the people, You are not able to serve the Lord, for he is a holy God. He is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions or your sins. If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods, then he will turn and do you harm and consume you, after having done you good. And the people said to Joshua, No, but we will serve the Lord. Then Joshua said to the people, You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen the Lord, to serve him. And they said, We are witnesses. He said, Then put away the foreign gods that are among you, and incline your heart to the Lord, the God of Israel. And the people said to Joshua, The Lord our God we will serve, and his voice we will obey. So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and put in place statutes and rules for them at Shechem. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! INTERLUDE Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection and worship. 2

6 CONFESSION OF SIN Standing Confession of sin happens within the context of relationship, both with God and each other. We confess together, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ. Father in heaven, forgive us for how we have sinned with our money. For orienting our lives around it, instead of around you. For viewing it as our own, instead of as coming from you. For running away from it, instead of handling it wisely. For spending it only on ourselves, instead of giving it to your kingdom. Forgive us our sins and soften our hearts through your generosity. May your grace make us generous people. (You are invited to confess your sins silently) RECEIVING OF GRACE Psalm 103:8-13 The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. He will not always chide, nor will he keep his anger forever. He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us. As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him. May the peace of Christ be with you! And also with you! 3

8 PRAYING THE PSALMS Psalm 78:1-8 Praying through the Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using the prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, there will be pauses for reflection. Give ear, O my people, to my teaching; incline your ears to the words of my mouth! I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings from of old, things that we have heard and known, that our fathers have told us. We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done. He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to teach to their children, that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children, so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments; and that they should not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation whose heart was not steadfast, whose spirit was not faithful to God. HYMN OF GOD S DEVOTION Be Thou My Vision Traditional Celtic Hymn 8th Century Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art Thou my best thought, by day or by night Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light Be Thou my wisdom, and Thou my true word I ever with Thee, and Thou with me Lord Thou my great Father, I Thy true son Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one Riches I heed not, nor man s empty praise Thou mine inheritance, now and always Thou and Thou only, first in my heart High king of heaven, my treasure Thou art 5 High king of heaven, my victory won May I reach heaven s joys, O bright heaven s sun Heart of my own heart, whatever befall Still be my vision, O ruler of all

OFFERING MUSIC In Labor All Creation Groans Lyrics provided for reflection below. In labor all creation groans till fear and hatred cease, Till human hearts come to believe: In Christ alone is peace. In labor all creation groans till prejudice shall cease, Till every race and tribe and tongue in Christ will live in peace. In labor all creation groans till rape and murder cease, Till women walk by night unharmed and Christ is this world s peace. In labor all creation groans till false divisions cease, Till enemies are reconciled in Christ who is our peace. Lyrics: Sister Delores Hufner Music: Traditional Prayer for Those Searching for the Truth Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen. 6

10 Seated, Standing, or Kneeling PRAYER OF THE PEOPLE Adapted from a prayer of lament from the CRC s Office of Social Justice Lord, in our shock and confusion, we come before you. In our grief and despair in the midst of hate, in our sense of helplessness in the face of violence, we lean on you. For the families and friends of those who were killed last Sunday at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas we pray. (Silent prayer for the victims and all affected by the mass shooting on Nov. 5.) Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Henri A. Cesar Malan, 1827 Frances R. Havergal, 1874 For the churches striving to be your light in darkness beyond our comprehension, we pray. (Silent prayer for the body of Christ.) Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Churches, schools, night clubs, movie theaters, shopping malls, social services centers, homes: death and terror has touched them all. Our hearts, O God, ache as we live in a world where death reigns, where bullets fly, and lives are so mercilessly taken. In the face of hatred, may we claim love, Lord. May we love those far off and those near. May we love those who are strangers and those who are friends. May we love those who we agree with and understand, and even more so, Lord, those who we consider to be our enemies. Kyrie Eleison. Lord, have mercy. Heal our sin-sick souls. Make these wounds whole, Lord. 7

15 PARISH FELLOWSHIPS Since our congregation draws from a wide geographic area, the parish model provides a way for people to connect with people who live near them. There is the greatest opportunity for organic connection and time together when people are proximate to one another. We want to establish and grow community groups within each parish, and we also hope that quarterly parish fellowships provide a natural way to reach out to neighbors who aren t part of the Grace community. 16 COMMUNITY GROUPS Community groups are places of care and community where we learn more about living the Christian life together. Each group is unique and has its own "personality," and yet all groups are focused on growing in relationship with God and with each other. Groups meet on different nights in various neighborhoods around the city, and include time for fellowship, study and reflection, and prayer together. 19 SERMON TEXT Deuteronomy 12:8-14 (NIV) [8] You are not to do as we do here today, everyone doing as they see fit, [9] since you have not yet reached the resting place and the inheritance the Lord your God is giving you. [10] But you will cross the Jordan and settle in the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, and he will give you rest from all your enemies around you so that you will live in safety. [11] Then to the place the Lord your God will choose as a dwelling for his Name there you are to bring everything I command you: your burnt offerings and sacrifices, your tithes and special gifts, and all the choice possessions you have vowed to the Lord. [12] And there rejoice before the Lord your God you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, and the Levites from your towns who have no allotment or inheritance of their own. [13] Be careful not to sacrifice your burnt offerings anywhere you please. [14] Offer them only at the place the Lord will choose in one of your tribes, and there observe everything I command you. 1 Timothy 5:17-18 (NIV) [17] The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching. [18] For Scripture says, Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain, and The worker deserves his wages. Matthew 6:19-21 [19] Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, [20] but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. [21] For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 16
