Bugs Bunny Have I made wrong choice? We all know what it feels like to ask yourself this question. Wher you re secondguessing a job you took, a relationship you find yourself in middle, or what you ordered for lunch, you know sensation having sinking feeling that you might have made a mistake. Being a disciple Jesus is no different. The Gospel Luke was written to a man named Theophilus. We don't know a lot details about Theophilus, but he appears to be a Christian who is having second thoughts about life discipleship he has embarked upon. This is how Luke addresses him in book s beginning: [I ve written this for you], Theophilus, that you may have certainty concerning things you have been taught. Apparently, Theophilus is questioning his decision to become a Christian. Living in a culture that is marked by ruthless power politics, a relatively weak ten hidden church, an almost incessant questioning dismissal Christian faith, it is easy to envision Theophilus asking questions like: Is this Jesus story really true? Is God really faithful to his promises? What does true discipleship look like? Luke went to great lengths researching crafting his gospel to answer questions like se. He wrote it so that people like Theophilus, us, might have confidence that God is at work in world in our lives through Jesus Christ. To be a disciple Jesus is to be on right path path salvation, which to Luke his original audience meant healing or wholeness. So, wher you re a new Christian, a seasoned saint, or someone investigating Jesus for first time, Luke is a great book for you to dive into. Let us worship. The Lord is everlasting God, Creator ends earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understing is unsearchable. He gives power to faint, to him who has no might he increases strength. 6 Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been practice church for thouss years to have portions bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all God s word. LECTIO SACRA 1 Thessalonians 5:111 Seated Now concerning times seasons, brors, you have no need to have anything written to you. For you yourselves are fully aware that day Lord will come like a thief in night. While people are saying, There is peace security, n sudden destruction will come upon m as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, y will not escape. But you are not in darkness, brors, for that day to surprise you like a thief. For you are all children light, children day. We are not night or darkness. So n let us not sleep, as ors do, but let us keep awake be sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, those who get drunk, are drunk at night. But since we belong to day, let us be sober, having put on breastplate faith love, for a helmet hope salvation. For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us so that wher we are awake or asleep we might live with him. Therefore encourage one anor build one anor up, just as you are doing. Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection worship. Confession sin happens within context relationship, both with God each or. We confess toger, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy celebrates its abundance in Christ. This is Word Lord. Thanks be to God! INTERLUDE CONFESSION OF SIN Adapted from Luke 7:1823 Sting Far, locked away in our places suffering, disappointment darkness it is so hard to keep believing in promises we trusted in when we first believed in you. Have mercy on us, O God! We hear reports blind receiving ir sightyet surely this is a fiction, for so many God's people remain in darkness. We hear reports that lame walkyet surely this is th, for noone walks again in real life once strength to walk run has been robbed m. We hear lepers healed brought into communitybut we struggle to believe that because once someone is stricken aboned it is impossible to get back home. We hear that you have raised deadbut se are mere legends we rehearse in our mindsit is to fantastic to believe that someone can come back from death. 3 We confess to you that we suffer from same disillusionment John Baptist. Help us, heal us our disillusionment. We desire to put our confidence in you, to pray to you again in hope. Forgive us our unbelief. Amen. (You are invited to confess your sins silently)

8 PRAYING THE PSALMS Psalm 73 Praying through Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using prayer book ancient Israel. As we pray, re will be pauses for reflection. Truly God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. But as for me, feet had almost stumbled, steps had nearly slipped. For I was envious arrogant when I saw prosperity wicked. For y have no pangs until death; ir bodies are fat sleek. They are not in trouble as ors are; y are not stricken like rest mankind. Therefore pride is ir necklace; violence covers m as a garment. Their eyes swell out through fatness; ir hearts overflow with follies. They scf speak with malice; ltily y threaten oppression. They set ir mouths against heavens, ir tongue struts through earth. Therefore his people turn back to m, find no fault in m. And y say, How can God know? Is re knowledge in Most High? Behold, se are wicked; always at ease, y increase in riches. All in vain have I kept heart clean washed hs in innocence. For all day long I have been stricken rebuked every morning. If I had said, I will speak thus, I would have betrayed generation your children. But when I thought how to underst this, it seemed to me a wearisome task, until I went into sanctuary God; n I discerned ir end. Truly you set m in slippery places; you make m fall to ruin. How y are destroyed in a moment, swept away utterly by terrors! Like a dream when one awakes, O Lord, when you rouse yourself, you despise m as phantoms. When soul was embittered, when I was pricked in heart, I was brutish ignorant; I was like a beast toward you. 5 (Continued on next page.)

9 Neverless, I am continually with you; you hold right h. You guide me with your counsel, afterward you will receive me to glory. Whom have I in heaven but you? And re is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. My flesh heart may fail, but God is strength heart portion forever. For behold, those who are far from you shall perish; you put an end to everyone who is unfaithful to you. But for me it is good to be near God; I have made Lord God refuge, that I may tell all your works. [21] In that hour he healed many people diseases plagues evil spirits, on many who were blind he bestowed sight. [22] And he answered m, Go tell John what you have seen heard: blind receive ir sight, lame walk, lepers are cleansed, deaf hear, dead are raised up, poor have good news preached to m. [23] And blessed is one who is not fended by me. 16
