ORDER OF WORSHIP Sunday, August 10, :00 am and 11:00 am graceseattle.org

S U M M E R P S A L M S : L E A R N I N G T O P R A Y Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before LORD, our Maker! Psalm 95:6 When we were young, our parents taught us certain patterns of speech. Our parents would teach us to say please, thank you and I m sorry. They knew lifelong importance of becoming skilled in se language forms and heart dispositions. They also knew that we were not born with ability to talk in this way. We had to learn how to do it. It works same way with God. Wher you are a Christian or not, you were not born with innate ability to know how to speak with God. Like children, we have to learn how to speak with God. We learn this language same way we learn any or languages: by hearing and repeating speech of ors. This is how Psalms are a great gift to us. God gave us Psalms to teach us how to pray. They are prayers of or people that we first hear. We n take those prayers into our own mouths and begin to repeat m. This is how we learn to dialog with God. In Psalms, we learn how to say to God, thank you!, you are simply amazing! and I am ready to follow you. We also learn how to cry out to God and say, why? and where have you gone? and I m sorry. The Psalms prepare us to engage with God in every possible life circumstance. Let us worship! WORSHIP SERVICE Sundays, 9:00 am and 11:00 am Meeting in Volunteer Park Seventhday Adventist church building (1300 E Aloha St). NURSERY Available for 6 months to 2 years during worship service. Located in Chapel, next to Sanctuary (upstairs). GRACE KIDS During Worship Service (9:00 am 12:30 pm) (23 years) Room 117 (45 years) Room 119

FOR REFLECTION "And I think re's evidence and it's not only reason this evidence exists, but I think it's a huge cause we are most indebt, obese, addicted and medicated adult cohort in U.S. history. The problem is and I learned this from research that you cannot selectively numb emotion. You can't say, here's bad stuff. Here's vulnerability, here's grief, here's shame, here's fear, here's disappointment. I don't want to feel se. I'm going to have a couple of beers and a banana nut muffin. I don't want to feel se...you can't numb those hard feelings without numbing or affects, our emotions. You cannot selectively numb. So when we numb those, we numb joy, we numb gratitude, we numb happiness." Brené Brown, "The Power of Vulnerability" "Addiction goes deeper than obsession and compulsion. It is worship. It is giving my heart and soul over to something that I believe will ease my pain and provide an outlet for my fury at being out of control in a world that hurts me, scares me, or leaves me alone." Sharon Hersh, "The Last Addiction" "Grace bats last." Anne Lamott

Your righteousness is like mountains of God; your judgments are like great deep; man and beast you save, O LORD. Please silence all mobile phones and electronic devices for duration of worship service. Text in bold italics is read toger by entire congregation. Plain text is read by one of worship service leaders. How precious is your steadfast love, O God! The children of mankind take refuge in shadow of your wings. We feast on abundance of your house, and you give us drink from river of your delights. For with you is fountain of life; in your light do we see light. Amen! 6 Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been practice of church for thousands of years to have portions of bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God s word. LECTIO SACRA Jeremiah 2:413 Hear word of LORD, O house of Jacob, and all clans of house of Israel. Thus says LORD: What wrong did your fars find in me that y went far from me, and went after worthlessness, and became worthless? They did not say, Where is LORD who brought us up from land of Egypt, who led us in wilderness, in a land of deserts and pits, in a land of drought and deep darkness, in a land that none passes through, where no man dwells? And I brought you into a plentiful land to enjoy its fruits and its good things. But when you came in, you defiled my land and made my heritage an abomination. The priests did not say, Where is LORD? Those who handle law did not know me; shepherds transgressed against me; prophets prophesied by Baal and went after things that do not profit. Therefore I still contend with you, declares LORD, and with your children's children I will contend. For cross to coasts of Cyprus and see, or send to Kedar and examine with care; see if re has been such a thing. Has a nation changed its gods, even though y are no gods? But my people have changed ir glory for that which does not profit. Be appalled, O heavens, at this; be shocked, be utterly desolate, declares LORD, for my people have committed two evils: y have forsaken me, fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for mselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water. The word of Lord! Thanks be to God! O R D E R O F W O R S H I P 2

INTERLUDE S T A N D I N G Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection and worship. CONFESSION OF SIN Adapted from Psalm 25 Be mindful of your mercy, O LORD, and of your steadfast love, for y have been from of old. Do not remember sins of my youth or my transgressions; according to your steadfast love remember me, for your goodness sake, O LORD! Good and upright is LORD; refore he instructs sinners in way. Confession of sin happens within context of relationship, both with God and each or. We confess toger, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ. For your name s sake, O LORD, pardon my guilt, for it is great. Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted. Relieve troubles of my heart, and bring me out of my distress. Consider my affliction and my trouble, and forgive all my sins. (You are invited to confess your sins silently.) RECEIVING OF GRACE Adapted from Ephesians 2 By grace we have been saved through faith. And this is not our own doing; it is gift of God, Not a result of our works, so that no one may boast. For we are God s workmanship, Created in Christ Jesus for good works, Which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in m. Amen. O R D E R O F W O R S H I P 3

PRAYING THE PSALMS Psalm 36 Transgression speaks to wicked deep in his heart; re is no fear of God before his eyes. For he flatters himself in his own eyes that his iniquity cannot be found out and hated. The words of his mouth are trouble and deceit; he has ceased to act wisely and do good. He plots trouble while on his bed; he sets himself in a way that is not good; he does not reject evil. Your steadfast love, O LORD, extends to heavens, your faithfulness to clouds. Amen. Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you fulfillment of all my need and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, true and living bread. S T A N D I N G AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Adapted from Ephesians 1 Praise be to God and Far of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ! Brors and sisters, what are blessings God has given us in Christ? He chose us in Christ before creation of world. In love, he predestined us for adoption as his sons and daughters through Jesus Christ. He has loved us first with a strong and steadfast love. Through blood of Christ, he has forgiven us of all of our sins: sins of yesterday, sins of today, sins of tomorrow. To praise of his glorious grace, we stand before him clean and holy. He has marked us as his own by sending Holy Spirit. The Spirit dwells within us, bringing God s love deep within us. The Spirit is God s pledge to us that he will finish work he has started. What can we say in response to such love? Glory be to Far. Glory be to Son. Glory be to Spirit. Amen! O R D E R O F W O R S H I P 7
