SUNDAY SCHEDULE 1300 E Aloha St Worship Service 9:00 am WORSHIP SERVICE Nursery 6 months 2 years Grace Kids 2s: Room 117 3s: Fellowship Hall (FH) 4s/5s (PreK): Room 119 Kinder8 years old: Room 103 Sermon Activity GOSPEL OF LUKE: SPRING 2017 Hmmm I knew I shoulda taken that left turn in Albuquerque. Bugs Bunny Have I made the wrong choice? We all know what it feels like to ask yourself this question. Whether you re secondguessing a job you took, a relationship you find yourself in the middle of, or what you ordered for lunch, you know the sensation of having the sinking feeling that you might have made a mistake. Being a disciple of Jesus is no different. The Gospel of Luke was written to a man named Theophilus. We don't know a lot of details about Theophilus, but he appears to be a Christian who is having second thoughts about the life of discipleship he has embarked upon. This is how Luke addresses him in the book s beginning: [I ve written this for you], Theophilus, that you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught. Apparently, Theophilus is questioning his decision to become a Christian. Living in a culture that is marked by ruthless power politics, a relatively weak and often hidden church, and an almost incessant questioning and dismissal of the Christian faith, it is easy to envision Theophilus asking questions like: Is this Jesus story really true? Is God really faithful to his promises? What does true discipleship look like? Luke went to great lengths researching and crafting his gospel to answer questions like these. He wrote it so that people like Theophilus, and us, might have confidence that God is at work in the world and in our lives through Jesus Christ. To be a disciple of Jesus is to be on the right path the path of salvation, which to Luke and his original audience meant healing or wholeness. So, whether you re a new Christian, a seasoned saint, or someone investigating Jesus for the first time, Luke is a great book for you to dive into. Let us worship. 3 REFLECTION QUOTES But the man who is not afraid to admit everything that he sees to be wrong with himself, and yet recognizes that he may be the object of God's love precisely because of his shortcomings, can begin to be sincere. His sincerity is based on confidence, not in his own illusions about himself, but in the endless, unfailing mercy of God. Thomas Merton, No Man Is an Island Spiritual transformation does not result from fixing our problems. It results from turning to God in the midst of them and meeting God just as we are. Turning to God is the core of confession and repentance. Turning to God in our sin and shame is the heart of spiritual transformation. David Brenner Like everyone else, I want to change but I also badly want to stay the same. I d like to repent, but mostly I don t. Getting past sin s screeching feedback loop requires paying attention to God and other people, and often I don t want to make the effort. Say I ve been mean, or lazy, or selfish: unless I m forced into actual relationships I just become meaner, less able to get up, less interested in thinking about anyone else. Say I ve been drifting into nostalgia, comfort, insularity the same sins I selfrighteously assign to the Church my whole world becomes so very small that there s no point in trying anything different. And so stepping out into the streets of the city on Ash Wednesday, as one more human made of dust, is a way to get shaken free, slapped upside the head by grace. Jammed body to body against the neighbors who irritate me, the friends I m too busy for, the strangers I ve failed to notice; speaking the truth aloud about our common mortality in a violent, classstratified city; glimpsing the inextinguishable desire for connection amid the din of commerce all this allows me to see again what treasures sin has kept me from, what s truly precious in God s eyes. 4 Please silence all mobile phones and electronic devices for the duration of the worship service. SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER WELCOME Seated Text in bold is read together by the entire congregation. Plain text is read by one of the worship service leaders The small symbols you will see throughout these pages correspond to a "Key to Liturgy" that you can pick up in the lobby to engage children in the elements of our worship service. Our worship begins each week with a call to worship. We are gathered here today because God, our Creator, desires to have a relationship with us. Whether we realize it or not, he is the one calling us to himself today and every day. CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 24 (NRSV) The earth is the LORD s and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it; for he has founded it on the seas, and established it on the rivers. Who shall ascend the hill of the LORD? And who shall stand in his holy place? Those who have clean hands and pure hearts, who do not lift up their souls to what is false, and do not swear deceitfully. They will receive blessing from the LORD, and vindication from the God of their salvation. Such is the company of those who seek him, who seek the face of the God of Jacob. Lift up your heads, O gates! and be lifted up, O ancient doors! that the King of glory may come in. Who is the King of glory? The LORD, strong and mighty, the LORD, mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, O gates! and be lifted up, O ancient doors! that the King of glory may come in. Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory. 5 LECTIO SACRA 1 Peter 4:1214, 5:611 Seated Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ's sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been the practice of the church for thousands of years to have portions of the bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God s word. Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. Be soberminded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! INTERLUDE Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection and worship. CONFESSION OF SIN Standing Almighty God, you have raised Jesus from death to life and crowned him Lord of all. We confess that we have not bowed before him or acknowledged his rule in our lives. We have gone along with the ways of the world and failed to give him glory. Confession of sin happens within the context of relationship, both with God and each other. We confess together, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ. Forgive us and raise us from sin, that we may be your faithful people, obeying the commands of our Lord Jesus Christ, who rules the world and is head of the church, his body. Amen. (You are invited to confess your sins silently) 2

PRAYING THE PSALMS Psalm 68:110, 3235 Praying through the Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using the prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, there will be pauses for reflection. God shall arise, his enemies shall be scattered; and those who hate him shall flee before him! As smoke is driven away, so you shall drive them away; as wax melts before fire, so the wicked shall perish before God! But the righteous shall be glad; they shall exult before God; they shall be jubilant with joy! Sing to God, sing praises to his name; lift up a song to him who rides through the deserts; his name is the Lord; exult before him! Father of the fatherless and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation. God settles the solitary in a home; he leads out the prisoners to prosperity, but the rebellious dwell in a parched land. O God, when you went out before your people, when you marched through the wilderness, the earth quaked, the heavens poured down rain, before God, the One of Sinai, before God, the God of Israel. Rain in abundance, O God, you shed abroad; you restored your inheritance as it languished; your flock found a dwelling in it; in your goodness, O God, you provided for the needy. O kingdoms of the earth, sing to God; sing praises to the Lord, to him who rides in the heavens, the ancient heavens; behold, he sends out his voice, his mighty voice. Ascribe power to God, whose majesty is over Israel, and whose power is in the skies. Awesome is God from his sanctuary; the God of Israel he is the one who gives power and strength to his people. Blessed be God! 5

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Seated Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen. GOSPEL LESSON The Feast of the Repentant Luke 5:2732 Rev. John Haralson Sermons can be streamed and downloaded at graceseattle.org/resources. Sermon time activity for kids kinder8 years old meets in room 103 during the first service sermon. INTERLUDE OFFERING Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the author and perfecter of my faith. Amen. The offering is a way for members and friends of Grace Church Seattle to support the church s mission and ministry. If you are our guest today, please feel under no compulsion to give. Please let us know you ve joined us today, as well as any comments or prayer requests, by placing your welcome card in the offering basket. Prayer for Those Searching for the Truth Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen. 7

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Nicene Creed What do we believe? We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. Standing Adopted in the 4th Century, the Nicene Creed is the most universally affirmed creed among Christian churches. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Catholic refers to the true Christian church at all times and in all places. 8

As I eat this bread and drink this cup, renew me in the joy and glory of knowing and serving you. I come to this table on the basis of your merit only and not my own. As you have completely and fully offered yourself for me, I now completely and fully offer myself to you as a living sacrifice. Amen. Communion, also called the Lord s Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal of Christians. We invite all baptized followers of Jesus Christ who acknowledge their sins against God and their neighbors and confess their need for the grace of Christ to partake of this meal. If you are a Christian and haven t been baptized, please talk with one of our pastors. We would be honored to baptize you. We hope that this time is helpful to you as you consider your relationship with Jesus Christ and with his people, the church. If you would like prayer during communion, intercessors will be available at the front of the sanctuary to pray with you. 9

COMMUNION MUSIC And Is He Removed Lyrics provided for reflection And is he removed Our Master belov d, Our heavenly Lord, Is Jesus again to his heaven restored? He is gone, he is gone To his dearlybought throne; Vanished out of our sight To his mansion of pure inaccessible light. Our heart is above, Our treasure and love Laid up in the sky, And thither in all our affections we fly: No longer inclined To the fleshpots behind, The world we forego, Not a wish, or a passion shall wander below. Words: Charles Wesley Music: Jonathan Green, 2012 Yet still we all share His happiness there, The valley pass through, And our Lord to his heaven of heavens pursue, In assurance of hope The members mount up, Where Jesus hath led We follow, and reign with our glorified head. Our spirit is flown To Jesus s throne, Our bodies are here, But wait when our Lord in the clouds shall appear. In the clouds he shall come And take his bride home, To his banquet above, To his heavenly fulness of glory and love. 16 PARISH FELLOWSHIPS Since our congregation draws from a wide geographic area, the parish model provides a way for people to connect with people who live near them. There is the greatest opportunity for organic connection and time together when people are proximate to one another. We want to establish and grow community groups within each parish, and we also hope that quarterly parish fellowships provide a natural way to reach out to neighbors who aren t part of the Grace community. 19 SERMON TEXT Luke 5:2732 [27] After this he went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax booth. And he said to him, Follow me. [28] And leaving everything, he rose and followed him. [29] And Levi made him a great feast in his house, and there was a large company of tax collectors and others reclining at table with them. [30] And the Pharisees and their scribes grumbled at his disciples, saying, Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners? [31] And Jesus answered them, Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. [32] I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance. 16
