2 SUNDAY SCHEDULE 1300 E Aloha St One Worship Service 9:00 am WORSHIP SERVICE Nursery 6 months 2 years Grace Kids 2s: Room 117 3s: Fellowship Hall (FH) s/5s (PreK): Room 119 Kinder8 years old: Fellowship Hall #1 Grace Kids During Worship SPRING 2018 My God, Bones what have I done? These are iconic words of Captain James Tiberias Kirk from movie Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, after Captain Kirk did unthinkable for fans of science fiction TV show and franchise Star Trek he destroyed USS Enterprise which was symbol of inspiration, home and optimism for characters and viewers of beloved program. Destroying Enterprise was like eating cornflakes without milk, or having cheese with no bread or wine; you just can t have Kirk, Spock and Bones without Enterprise! For those of us unfamiliar with pop culture references and shows like Star Trek, I am sure you can resonate with tragedy and heartbreak of being displaced from home, of being disillusioned when once inspired, and pessimistic where re was once optimism. To help guide us on our life s journey, stripped of our normal leadership as a church, we are taking a break from our annual summer survey of Psalms and spending some time with remnant of believers in Old Testament who were stripped of ir normal leadership and displaced from ir own Enterprise, Temple of Living God. This Summer, Grace focus on books of Haggai and Zechariah that speak to a people who are called to rebuild Temple that was a symbol of inspiration to nations, home to God and his covenant people, and a sign of optimism that one day world would be made right again. After Kirk heartbreakingly stares at Enterprise burning up in atmosphere and asks, What have I done?, Bones replies, What you had to do, what you always do. Turn death into a fighting chance to live.. In Scripture, God allowed destruction of Temple in response to our sin, but through that death His people were reborn. In Christ, His Body, or Temple, (John 2: 19), was destroyed so that in his death we might live. This Summer as we read and reflect, may words of Haggai and Zechariah inspire us all towards true faith and obedience. TRINITY SUNDAY WELCOME CALL TO WORSHIP "Trinity" From The Valley of Vision Three in one, One in Three, God of our Salvation, Seated Standing Text in bold is read toger by entire congregation. Plain text is read by one of worship service leaders The small symbols you see throughout se pages correspond to a "Key to Liturgy" that you can pick up in lobby to engage children in elements of our worship service. Heavenly Far, blessed Son, eternal Spirit, We adore e as one Being, one Essence, one God in three distinct Persons, for bringing sinners to thy knowledge and to thy kingdom. O Far, thou hast loved us and sent Jesus to redeem us; O Jesus, thou hast loved us and assumed our nature, shed thine own blood to wash away our sins, wrought righteousness to cover our unworthiness; O Holy Spirit, thou hast loved us and entered our hearts, implanted re eternal life, revealed to us glories of Jesus. Our worship begins each week with a call to worship. We are gared here today because God, our Creator, desires to have a relationship with us. Wher we realize it or not, he is one calling us to himself today and every day. Reginald Herber, 1826 John B. 5 LECTIO SACRA Hebrews 12:117 Seated Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, founder and perfecter of our faith, who for joy that was set before him endured cross, despising shame, and is seated at right hand of throne of God. Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainarted. In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to point of shedding your blood. And have you forgotten exhortation that addresses you as sons? Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been practice of church for thousands of years to have portions of bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God s word. My son, do not regard lightly discipline of Lord, nor be weary when reproved by him. For Lord disciplines one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives. It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is re whom his far does not discipline? If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, n you are illegitimate children and not sons. Besides this, we have had earthly fars who disciplined us and we respected m. Shall we not much more be subject to Far of spirits and live? For y disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to m, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. For moment all discipline seems painful rar than pleasant, but later it yields peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengn your weak knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint but rar be healed. Strive for peace with everyone, and for holiness without which no one see Lord. See to it that no one fails to obtain grace of God; that no root of bitterness springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled; that no one is sexually immoral or unholy like Esau, who sold his birthright for a single meal. For you know that afterward, when he desired to inherit blessing, he was rejected, for he found no chance to repent, though he sought it with tears. This is Word of Lord. Thanks be to God! INTERLUDE 2

6 CONFESSION OF SIN "Reliance" From Valley of Vision Standing Confession of sin happens within context of relationship, both with God and each or. We confess toger, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ. My Far, When thou art angry towards me for my wrongs I try to pacify e by abstaining from future sin; But teach me that I cannot satisfy thy law, that this effort is a resting in my righteousness, that only Christ s righteousness, ready made, already finished, is fit for that purpose; that thy chastising me for my sin is not that I should try to reform, but only that I may be more humbled, afflicted, and separated from sin, by being reconciled, and made righteous in Christ by faith; that a sense of my sufficiency and ability in him is one means of my being immovable; that I can never be so by resting on my own faith, but by trusting in e as my only support, by faith; that if I cast away my faith I cast away e, for by faith I apprehend e, and as thou art very precious, so is my faith very precious to me; that I fall short of purity thou requirest, because in thinking I am holy I do not seek holiness, or, believing I am impotent, I do no more. Humble me for not being as holy as I should be, or as holy as I might be through Christ, for thou art all, and to possess e is to possess all. But to make creature something is to make it stand between e and me, so that I do not walk humbly and holily. Lord, forgive me for this. (You are invited to confess your sins silently.) 3

7 RECEIVING OF GRACE Adapted from 1 John 1:710 Hear se words of comfort for we sinners, saved by grace! But if we walk in light, as he is in light, we have fellowship with one anor, and blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. Brors and Sisters, trust in this precious promise, in Christ we are forgiven and cleansed! May peace of Christ be with you! And also with you! 8 PRAYING THE PSALMS Psalm 132 Praying through Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, re be pauses for reflection. Remember, O Lord, in David's favor, all hardships he endured, how he swore to Lord and vowed to Mighty One of Jacob, I not enter my house or get into my bed, I not give sleep to my eyes or slumber to my eyelids, until I find a place for Lord, a dwelling place for Mighty One of Jacob. Behold, we heard of it in Ephrathah; we found it in fields of Jaar. Let us go to his dwelling place; let us worship at his footstool! Arise, O Lord, and go to your resting place, you and ark of your might. Let your priests be clod with righteousness, and let your saints shout for joy. For sake of your servant David, do not turn away face of your anointed one. The Lord swore to David a sure oath from which he not turn back: One of sons of your body I set on your throne. If your sons keep my covenant and my testimonies that I shall teach m, ir sons also forever shall sit on your throne. For Lord has chosen Zion; he has desired it for his dwelling place: This is my resting place forever; here I dwell, for I have desired it. I abundantly bless her provisions; I satisfy her poor with bread. Her priests I clo with salvation, and her saints shout for joy. There I make a horn to sprout for David; I have prepared a lamp for my anointed. His enemies I clo with shame, but on him his crown shine. 5

INTERLUDE Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen. Prayer for Those Searching for Truth Jesus, you claim to be way, truth, and life. Grant that I might be undaunted by cost of following you as I consider reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to life that you promise. Amen. 6

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Apostles Creed Standing What is it that we, people of God, believe? The Apostles Creed is oldest summary of Christian beliefs. It has been used in some form since at least 3rd Century. Catholic refers to true Christian church at all times and in all places. We believe in God, Far Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by Holy Spirit, born of virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from dead. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at right hand of God Far Almighty. From re he come to judge living and dead. We believe in Holy Spirit, holy catholic church, communion of saints, forgiveness of sins, resurrection of body, and life everlasting. Amen. 19 SERMON TEXT Haggai 1 [1] In second year of Darius king, in sixth month, on first day of month, word of Lord came by hand of Haggai prophet to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, high priest: [2] Thus says Lord of hosts: These people say time has not yet come to rebuild house of Lord. [3] Then word of Lord came by hand of Haggai prophet, [] Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins? [5] Now, refore, thus says Lord of hosts: Consider your ways. [6] You have sown much, and harvested little. You eat, but you never have enough; you drink, but you never have your fill. You clo yourselves, but no one is warm. And he who earns wages does so to put m into a bag with holes. [7] Thus says Lord of hosts: Consider your ways. [8] Go up to hills and bring wood and build house, that I may take pleasure in it and that I may be glorified, says Lord. [9] You looked for much, and behold, it came to little. And when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why? declares Lord of hosts. Because of my house that lies in ruins, while each of you busies himself with his own house. [10] Therefore heavens above you have withheld dew, and earth has withheld its produce. [11] And I have called for a drought on land and hills, on grain, new wine, oil, on what ground brings forth, on man and beast, and on all ir labors. [12] Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, and Joshua son of Jehozadak, high priest, with all remnant of people, obeyed voice of Lord ir God, and words of Haggai prophet, as Lord ir God had sent him. And people feared Lord. [13] Then Haggai, messenger of Lord, spoke to people with Lord's message, I am with you, declares Lord. [1] And Lord stirred up spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and spirit of Joshua son of Jehozadak, high priest, and spirit of all remnant of people. And y came and worked on house of Lord of hosts, ir God, [15] on twentyfourth day of month, in sixth month, in second year of Darius king. 19
