2 S U M M E R P S A L M S : L E A R N I N G T O P R A Y Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker! Psalm 95:6 When we were young, our parents taught us certain patterns of speech. Our parents would teach us to say please, thank you and I m sorry. They knew the lifelong importance of becoming skilled in these language forms and heart dispositions. They also knew that we were not born with the ability to talk in this way. We had to learn how to do it. It works the same way with God. Whether you are a Christian or not, you were not born with the innate ability to know how to speak with God. Like children, we have to learn how to speak with God. We learn this language the same way we learn any other languages: by hearing and repeating the speech of others. This is how the Psalms are a great gift to us. God gave us the Psalms to teach us how to pray. They are the prayers of other people that we first hear. We then take those prayers into our own mouths and begin to repeat them. This is how we learn to dialog with God. In the Psalms, we learn how to say to God, thank you!, you are simply amazing! and I am ready to follow you. We also learn how to cry out to God and say, why? and where have you gone? and I m sorry. The Psalms prepare us to engage with God in every possible life circumstance. Let us worship! 3 FOR REFLECTION "Emerging adults are determined to be free. But they do not know what is worth doing with their freedom. They work very hard to stand on their own two feet. But they do not really know where they ought to go and why, once they are standing. They lack larger visions of what is true and real and good.many know that there must be something more, and they want it. Many are uncomfortable with their inability to make truth statements and moral claims without killing them with the death of a thousand qualifications. But they do not know what to do about that, given the crisis of truth and values that has destabilized their culture. And so they simply carry on as best they can, as sovereign, autonomous, empowered individuals who lack a reliable basis for any particular conviction or direction by which to guide their lives." Christian Smith and Patricia Snell, Souls in Transition: The Religious and Spiritual Lives of Emerging Adults While it is popular to ask, 'What would Jesus do?' the better question was always 'What is Jesus doing?' The first question assumes that the Savior is on the sidelines and that the burden of life and work is on our shoulders. But in that case the Savior is not really saving but is setting impossibly high standards that we attempt to imitate by doing what we assume he would do if he were in our situation. On the other hand, the question 'What is Jesus doing?' is built on the conviction that he is alive, reigning, and at work in our lives. In other words, he is in our situation, and that changes everything about our mission. Rather than believing that the work of Christ is completed and that now it is our turn to try and imitate his life and work, we take on the identity of being witnesses who watch and testify to his continued work of salvation that is unfolding before our eyes. 6 Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been the practice of the church for thousands of years to have portions of the bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God s word. LECTIO SACRA Philippians 4:49 (NIV) Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable if anything is excellent or praiseworthy think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. The word of the Lord! Thanks be to God! Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection and worship. INTERLUDE S T A N D I N G Confession of sin happens within the context of relationship, both with God and each other. We confess together, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ. CONFESSION OF SIN Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen. 8 Praying through the Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using the prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, there will be pauses for reflection. PRAYING THE PSALMS I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry. 10 'Ebenezer' means 'stone of help' in Hebrew. It was a stone marker that the prophet Samuel used to remind God's people how God had helped them. See I Sam 7:12. Prayer for Those Searching for the Truth Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen. Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the author and perfecter of my faith. Amen. Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. 11 S T A N D I N G AFFIRMATION OF FAITH What do we believe about the sanctification of sinners? We believe that true faith, produced in us by the hearing of God s Word and by the work of the Holy Spirit, regenerates us and makes us new creatures, causing us to live a new life and freeing us from the slavery of sin. Adapted from the Belgic Confession The Belgic Confession was written in 1567 by a Dutch minister. It is a common doctrinal statement for many Reformed churches throughout the world. Therefore, far from making people cold toward living in a pious and holy way, this justifying faith, quite to the contrary, so works within us that apart from it we will never do a thing out of love for God but only out of love for ourselves and fear of being condemned. So then, it is impossible for this holy faith to be unfruitful in a human being. Therefore, we do not speak of an empty faith but of what Scripture calls faith working through love, which moves us to do wholeheartedly the works that God has commanded in his Word. These works, proceeding from the good root of faith, are good and acceptable to God, since they are all sanctified by his grace. Yet they do not count toward our justification for by faith in Christ alone we are justified, even before we do good works. Otherwise they could not be good, any more than the fruit of a tree could be good if the tree is not good in the first place. O R D E R O F W O R S H I P 7

We invite all baptized followers of Jesus Christ who acknowledge their sins against God and their neighbors and confess their need for the grace of Christ to partake of this meal. 18 C U L T I V A T E Gospel in Life Living life and believing the gospel in the 21st century can be just plain weird. At times our culture seems so far removed from the gospel that our faith seems irrelevant. We are tempted to slink into relative obscurity or fight to maintain our footing. Often the gospel of hope seems powerless to change our daily lives, much less to shape our culture. But the exact opposite is true! The gospel, the story of God redeeming His creation, give us the love, hope, and passion we need to truly love each other well, to work with passion, and to be a part of a flourishing city. Gospel in Life, by Tim Keller, is an eightweek videobased study of the gospel and how to live it out in everyday life. In week one we will study the city, our home now, the world that is. Week eight closes with the theme of the eternal city, our heavenly home, the world that is to come. In between we will learn how the gospel can change your heart, your community, and how you live in this world.
