2 SUNDAY SCHEDULE 1300 E Aloha St One Service 9:00 am FIRST SERVICE Nursery 6 months - 2 years Grace Kids Toddlers (2&3): Room 117 PreK: Room 119 CHRISTMASTIDE 2018 In our culture, Christmas can often feel like a mad dash to get everything ready in time for December 24th. This is followed by an intense, 48-hour period where we try to squeeze in all of our celebrating. Instead of feeling joyful, we are often worn out. This is a place where church s historical practices can help us. Traditionally, Christmas celebration lasts for 12 Days from December 25th through January 5th. This historic practice is what gave rise to popular song, The Twelve Days of Christmas. The Twelve Days are when we get to fully celebrate birth of Jesus. It s a time of singing carols, reading gospel stories of Jesus birth, being with friends family, working less (if possible), eating great food, thanking God that in Jesus, Word has become flesh came to dwell with us. So instead of being like a frantic sprint followed by a collapse, traditional observance of Christmas is more of a leisurely stroll. We don t have to get in all of our celebrating over space of two days. We can spread out feast over nearly two weeks. This not only takes some of pressure off, it also teaches us something about true celebration. Our culture knows a lot about fleeting moments of euphoria. But observing an entire season of celebration teaches us something about developing lives of sustained joy. This is something that both we our culture desperately need. Joy to world, Lord has come! 4 Please silence all mobile phones electronic devices for duration of worship service. Text in bold is read toger by entire congregation. Plain text is read by one of worship service leaders The small symbols you will see throughout se pages correspond to a "Key to Liturgy". Our worship begins each week with a call to worship. We are gared here today because God, our Creator, desires to have a relationship with us. Wher we realize it or not, he is one calling us to himself today every day. CHRISTMASTIDE WELCOME CALL TO WORSHIP Isaiah 9:2-7 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a l of deep darkness, on m has light shone. You have multiplied nation; you have increased its joy; y rejoice before you as with joy at harvest, as y are glad when y divide spoil. For yoke of his burden, staff for his shoulder, rod of his oppressor, you have broken as on day of Midian. For every boot of tramping warrior in battle tumult every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for fire. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; government shall be upon his shoulder, his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Far, Prince of Peace. Of increase of his government of peace re will be no end, on throne of David over his kingdom, to establish it to uphold it with justice with righteousness from this time forth forevermore. The zeal of Lord of hosts will do this. 5 LECTIO SACRA Isaiah 61:10-62:3; Galatians 3:23-26; 4:4-7 Old Testament I will greatly rejoice in Lord; my soul shall exult in my God, for he has clod me with garments of salvation; he has covered me with robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress, as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as earth brings forth its sprouts, as a garden causes what is sown in it to sprout up, so Lord God will cause righteousness praise to sprout up before all nations. For Zion's sake I will not keep silent, for Jerusalem's sake I will not be quiet, until her righteousness goes forth as brightness, her salvation as a burning torch. The nations shall see your righteousness, all kings your glory, you shall be called by a new name that mouth of Lord will give. You shall be a crown of beauty in h of Lord, a royal diadem in h of your God. Seated Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been practice of church for thouss of years to have portions of bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God s word. Gospel Now before faith came, we were held captive under law, imprisoned until coming faith would be revealed. So n, law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. But when fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under law, to redeem those who were under law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, Abba! Far! So you are no longer a slave, but a son, if a son, n an heir through God. INTERLUDE 2

6 Confession of sin happens within context of relationship, both with God each or. We confess toger, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy celebrates its abundance in Christ. CONFESSION OF SIN From UMC Discipleship Ministries Sting Lord of Christmas Peace, we have done wrong. We have tarnished gift you gave freely. We have buried you so deeply in our hearts, world doesn't see you. We have not followed Christ, we have ignored your teachings, we have lived lives of apathy against your love, we have built fences fortresses to push people away, we have silenced screams of those in need. Forgive us, we pray. Free us from our sin, free us from our captivity, free us to a life lived in Joy through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (You are invited to confess your sins silently.) RECEIVING OF GRACE From Titus 3:4-7 Brors Sisters, light has come, has shown in our darkness. The Grace of God has come in our flesh to redeem us out of every sin calamity. Say believe se words of life: But when goodness loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by washing of regeneration renewal of Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to hope of eternal life. In Christ, we are forgiven by His great grace mercy! This is Gospel! Thanks Be to God! May peace of Christ be with you! And also with you! 3

7 HYMN OF GOD S LOVE Amazing Grace Amazing grace! How sweet sound That saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found; Was blind, but now I see. Through many dangers, toils snares, I have already come; Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home. John Newton, 1779 New Britain, 1831 (last stanza author unknown) Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed. When we ve been re ten thous years, Bright shining as sun, We ve no less days to sing God s praise Than when we d first begun. PRAYING THE PSALMS Psalm 147 Praise Lord! For it is good to sing praises to our God; for it is pleasant, a song of praise is fitting. The Lord builds up Jerusalem; he gars outcasts of Israel. He heals brokenhearted binds up ir wounds. He determines number of stars; he gives to all of m ir names. Great is our Lord, abundant in power; his understing is beyond measure. The Lord lifts up humble; he casts wicked to ground. Praying through Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, re will be pauses for reflection. Sing to Lord with thanksgiving; make melody to our God on lyre! He covers heavens with clouds; he prepares rain for earth; he makes grass grow on hills. He gives to beasts ir food, to young ravens that cry. His delight is not in strength of horse, nor his pleasure in legs of a man, but Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him, in those who hope in his steadfast love. (Continued on next page.) 4

8 Praise Lord, O Jerusalem! Praise your God, O Zion! For he strengns bars of your gates; he blesses your children within you. He makes peace in your borders; he fills you with finest of wheat. He sends out his comm to earth; his word runs swiftly. He gives snow like wool; he scatters frost like ashes. He hurls down his crystals of ice like crumbs; who can st before his cold? He sends out his word, melts m; he makes his wind blow waters flow. He declares his word to Jacob, his statutes rules to Israel. He has not dealt thus with any or nation; y do not know his rules. Praise Lord! Damon Minchella Steven Douglas White Emmanuel Come, come let us adore him, kneel down before him, worship adore him! (Repeat) Emmanuel! (Repeat) We worship you. (Repeat) 5
