2 SUNDAY SCHEDULE 1300 E Aloha St Worship Service 10:00 am WORSHIP SERVICE Nursery 6 months 2 years Grace Kids 2s: Room 117 3s: Fellowship Hall (FH) s/5s (PreK): Room 119 SUMMER 2018 My God, Bones what have I done? These are iconic words of Captain James Tiberias Kirk from movie Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, after Captain Kirk did unthinkable for fans of science fiction TV show and franchise Star Trek he destroyed USS Enterprise which was symbol of inspiration, home and optimism for characters and viewers of beloved program. Destroying Enterprise was like eating cornflakes without milk, or having cheese with no bread or wine; you just can t have Kirk, Spock and Bones without Enterprise! For those of us unfamiliar with pop culture references and shows like Star Trek, I am sure you can resonate with tragedy and heartbreak of being displaced from home, of being disillusioned when once inspired, and pessimistic where re was once optimism. To help guide us on our life s journey, stripped of our normal leadership as a church, we are taking a break from our annual summer survey of Psalms and spending some time with remnant of believers in Old Testament who were stripped of ir normal leadership and displaced from ir own Enterprise, Temple of Living God. This Summer, Grace will focus on books of Haggai and Zechariah that speak to a people who are called to rebuild Temple that was a symbol of inspiration to nations, home to God and his covenant people, and a sign of optimism that one day world would be made right again. After Kirk heartbreakingly stares at Enterprise burning up in atmosphere and asks, What have I done?, Bones replies, What you had to do, what you always do. Turn death into a fighting chance to live.. In Scripture, God allowed destruction of Temple in response to our sin, but through that death His people were reborn. In Christ, His Body, or Temple, (John 2: 19), was destroyed so that in his death we might live. This Summer as we read and reflect, may words of Haggai and Zechariah inspire us all towards true faith and obedience. Unless orwise noted, all Scripture quotations are from The Holy Bible, English Standard Version (ESV ), copyright 2001 by Crossway, a publishing ministry of Good News Publishers. Used by permission. 3 REFLECTION QUOTES APOLLYON: But you have already been unfaithful in serving your new Lord, so how is it possible for you to receive any wages from him? CHRISTIAN: Tell me, oh Apollyon, in what ways have I been unfaithful to him? APOLLYON: Very soon after leaving City of Destruction, you were quickly discouraged when you almost drowned in Slough of Despond. You made several wrong attempts to be rid of your burden, whereas you should have waited until your Prince relieved you of it himself. Through shameful oversleeping, you lost a very precious personal possession; also you were nearly persuaded to turn back at sight of those fierce lions; and when you converse, as you travel, of what you have heard and seen, your inward desire is for personal glory with regard to everything that you say or do. CHRISTIAN: All that you say is true; in fact re is much more that you have left out. But Prince who I serve and honor is very merciful and most willing to forgive;but besides this, se misdemeanors were committed in your territory where I was educated in m; and as a consequence I have grieved over m and repented of ever doing such things. Furrmore, I have received a full pardon regarding se crimes from Prince. APOLLYON: (In a furious rage) I am an ene of this Prince of yours: I hate his person, his laws, and his people: for this reason I have purposely come out here to oppose you. CHRISTIAN: Apollyon, be very careful what you are doing, for I am in King s highway, that is way of holiness; so watch yourself. "Christian Enters Battle with Apollyon", The Pilgrim's Progress, by Paul Bunyan "Those whom God effectually calleth, he also freely justifieth: not by infusing righteousness into m, but by pardoning ir sins, and by accounting and accepting ir persons as righteous; not for anything wrought in m, or done by m, but for Christ s sake alone; nor by imputing faith itself, act of believing, or any or evangelical obedience to m, as ir righteousness; but by imputing obedience and satisfaction of Christ unto m, y receiving and resting on him and his righteousness, by faith; which faith y have not of mselves, it is gift of God." Westminster Confession of Faith, 11.1 "It's not bragging if you can back it up." Muhammad Ali

EIGHTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST WELCOME CALL TO WORSHIP Adapted from Jeremiah 33:116 Seated Standing Text in bold is read toger by entire congregation. Plain text is read by one of worship service leaders The small symbols you will see throughout se pages correspond to a "Key to Liturgy" that you can pick up in lobby to engage children in elements of our worship service. Our worship begins each week with a call to worship. We are gared here today because God, our Creator, desires to have a relationship with us. Wher we realize it or not, he is one calling us to himself today and every day. by music: TRURO, Psalmodia Evangelica, 1789; text: George Weissel, 162; trans. Carine Winkworth Behold, days are coming, declares Lord, when I will fulfill promise I made to house of Israel and house of Judah. In those days and at that time God will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David, and he shall execute justice and righteousness in land. In those days Judah will be saved, and Jerusalem will dwell securely. And this is name by which it will be called: The Lord is our righteousness. 5 LECTIO SACRA Revelation 12 Seated And a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clod with sun, with moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. She was pregnant and was crying out in birth pains and agony of giving birth. And anor sign appeared in heaven: behold, a great red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns, and on his heads seven diadems. His tail swept down a third of stars of heaven and cast m to earth. And dragon stood before woman who was about to give birth, so that when she bore her child he might devour it. She gave birth to a male child, one who is to rule all nations with a rod of iron, but her child was caught up to God and to his throne, and woman fled into wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, in which she is to be nourished for 1,260 days. Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been practice of church for thousands of years to have portions of bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God s word. Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against dragon. And dragon and his angels fought back, but he was defeated, and re was no longer any place for m in heaven. And great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called devil and Satan, deceiver of whole world he was thrown down to earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, Now salvation and power and kingdom of our God and authority of his Christ have come, for accuser of our brors has been thrown down, who accuses m day and night before our God. And y have conquered him by blood of Lamb and by word of ir testimony, for y loved not ir lives even unto death. Therefore, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in m! But woe to you, O earth and sea, for devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short! And when dragon saw that he had been thrown down to earth, he pursued woman who had given birth to male child. But woman was given two wings of great eagle so that she might fly from serpent into wilderness, to place where she is to be nourished for a time, and times, and half a time. The serpent poured water like a river out of his mouth after woman, to sweep her away with a flood. But earth came to help of woman, and earth opened its mouth and swallowed river that dragon had poured from his mouth. Then dragon became furious with woman and went off to make war on rest of her offspring, on those who keep commandments of God and hold to testimony of Jesus. And he stood on sand of sea. This is Word of Lord. Thanks be to God! 2

6 Matw Bridges, George Job Elvey, Paul Marino, and Godfrey Thring 2008 Van Ness Press, Inc. INTERLUDE Crown Him With Many Crowns CONFESSION OF SIN From monergism.com Standing Confession of sin happens within context of relationship, both with God and each or. We confess toger, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ. Almighty and most merciful Far, we are thankful that your mercy is higher than heavens, wider than our wanderings, deeper than all our sin. Forgive our careless attitudes toward your purposes, our refusal to relieve suffering of ors, our envy of those who have more than we have, our obsession with creating a life of constant pleasure, our indifference to treasures of heaven, our neglect of your wise and gracious law. Help us to change our way of life so that we may desire what is good, love what you love, and do what you command, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (You are invited to confess your sins silently.) RECEIVING OF GRACE Adapted from Isaiah 61:10 Brors and Sisters, in Christ our sins are forgiven and we accept Isaiah's words as our own: I will greatly rejoice in Lord; soul shall exult in God, for he has clod me with garments of salvation; he has covered me with robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. Christ hung naked on our behalf, bearing our sin on Cross, and he has clod us in His righteousness with great joy! This is Gospel! May peace of Christ be with you! And also with you! 3

8 PRAYING THE WORD Isaiah 11:110 Praying through Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, re will be pauses for reflection. There shall come forth a shoot from stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit. And Spirit of Lord shall rest upon him, Spirit of wisdom and understanding, Spirit of counsel and might, Spirit of knowledge and fear of Lord. And his delight shall be in fear of Lord. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide disputes by what his ears hear, but with righteousness he shall judge poor, and decide with equity for meek of earth; and he shall strike earth with rod of his mouth, and with breath of his lips he shall kill wicked. Righteousness shall be belt of his waist, and faithfulness belt of his loins. The wolf shall dwell with lamb, and leopard shall lie down with young goat, and calf and lion and fattened calf toger; and a little child shall lead m. The cow and bear shall graze; ir young shall lie down toger; and lion shall eat straw like ox. The nursing child shall play over hole of cobra, and weaned child shall put his hand on adder's den. They shall not hurt or destroy in all holy mountain; for earth shall be full of knowledge of Lord as waters cover sea. In that day root of Jesse, who shall stand as a signal for peoples of him shall nations inquire, and his resting place shall be glorious. 5

I thank you for paying debt, bearing punishment on cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from dead, I turn from sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen. PASSING THE PEACE As recipients of God's grace, we gladly receive peace from him. In response to his grace, we also extend that grace to one anor with a handshake or a hug. Traditionally, Christians have greeted one anor during this time in service with phrase, "May peace of Christ be with you" and receive back greeting "And also with you." MUSICAL OFFERING Crown Him With Many Crowns Lyrics are provided for reflection. Matw Bridges, George Job Elvey, Paul Marino, and Godfrey Thring 2008 Van Ness Press, Inc. Crown Him with many crowns, Lamb upon His throne; hark, how heav'nly anm drowns all music but its own! Awake, soul, and sing of Him who died for e, and hail Him as thy matchless King through all eternity. Crown Him Lord of love; behold His hands and side, rich wounds, yet visible above, in beauty glorified: no angel in sky can fully bear that sight, but downward bends his burning eye at steries so bright. Crown Him Lord of life, who triumphed o'er grave, and rose victorious in strife for those He came to save. His glories now we sing, who died and rose on high, who died eternal life to bring, and lives that death may die. 8

12 AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Nicene Creed Standing What do we believe? Adopted in th Century, Nicene Creed is most universally affirmed creed among Christian churches. We believe in one God, Far, Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, only Son of God, eternally begotten of Far, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with Far. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by power of Holy Spirit he became incarnate from Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On third day he rose again in accordance with Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at right hand of Far. He will come again in glory to judge living and dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in Holy Spirit, Lord, giver of life, who proceeds from Far and Son. With Far and Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through Prophets. Catholic refers to true Christian church at all times and in all places. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for forgiveness of sins. We look for resurrection of dead, and life of world to come. Amen. 9

As I eat this bread and drink this cup, renew me in joy and glory of knowing and serving you. I come to this table on basis of your merit only and not own. As you have completely and fully offered yourself for me, I now completely and fully offer self to you as a living sacrifice. Amen. It is right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Far Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim glory of your Name: The Sursum Corda (Latin: Lift up your hearts ) is an opening dialogue in Eucharistic liturgy of Christian Church and dates back (at least) to third century. This text encourages church to come with thankfulness and joy to Lord s table. 10

19 SERMON TEXT Zechariah 3 [1] Then he showed me Joshua high priest standing before angel of Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him. [2] And Lord said to Satan, The Lord rebuke you, O Satan! The Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is not this a brand plucked from fire? [3] Now Joshua was standing before angel, clod with filthy garments. [] And angel said to those who were standing before him, Remove filthy garments from him. And to him he said, Behold, I have taken your iniquity away from you, and I will clo you with pure vestments. [5] And I said, Let m put a clean turban on his head. So y put a clean turban on his head and clod him with garments. And angel of Lord was standing by. [6] And angel of Lord solemnly assured Joshua, [7] Thus says Lord of hosts: If you will walk in ways and keep charge, n you shall rule house and have charge of courts, and I will give you right of access among those who are standing here. [8] Hear now, O Joshua high priest, you and your friends who sit before you, for y are men who are a sign: behold, I will bring servant Branch. [9] For behold, on stone that I have set before Joshua, on a single stone with seven eyes, I will engrave its inscription, declares Lord of hosts, and I will remove iniquity of this land in a single day. [10] In that day, declares Lord of hosts, every one of you will invite his neighbor to come under his vine and under his fig tree. 16
