ORDER OF WORSHIP Sunday, August 24, :00 am and 11:00 am graceseattle.org

S U M M E R P S A L M S : L E A R N I N G T O P R A Y Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker! Psalm 95:6 When we were young, our parents taught us certain patterns of speech. Our parents would teach us to say please, thank you and I m sorry. They knew the life-long importance of becoming skilled in these language forms and heart dispositions. They also knew that we were not born with the ability to talk in this way. We had to learn how to do it. It works the same way with God. Whether you are a Christian or not, you were not born with the innate ability to know how to speak with God. Like children, we have to learn how to speak with God. We learn this language the same way we learn any other languages: by hearing and repeating the speech of others. This is how the Psalms are a great gift to us. God gave us the Psalms to teach us how to pray. They are the prayers of other people that we first hear. We then take those prayers into our own mouths and begin to repeat them. This is how we learn to dialog with God. In the Psalms, we learn how to say to God, thank you!, you are simply amazing! and I am ready to follow you. We also learn how to cry out to God and say, why? and where have you gone? and I m sorry. The Psalms prepare us to engage with God in every possible life circumstance. Let us worship! WORSHIP SERVICE Sundays, 9:00 am and 11:00 am Meeting in the Volunteer Park Seventh-day Adventist church building (1300 E Aloha St). NURSERY Available for 6 months to 2 years during the worship service. Located in the Chapel, next to the Sanctuary (upstairs). GRACE KIDS During Worship Service (9:00 am - 12:30 pm) (2-3 years) Room 117 (4-5 years) Room 119

FOR REFLECTION God has come to you to save the sinner. Be glad! This message is liberation through truth. You can hide nothing from God. The mask you wear before others will do you no good before Him. He wants to see you as you are, He wants to be gracious to you. You do not have to go on lying to yourself and your brothers and sisters, as if you were without sin; you can dare to be a sinner. Thank God for that. - Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Life Together The Reformation was a time when men went blind, staggering drunk because they had discovered, in the dusty basement of late medievalism, a whole cellar full of fifteen-hundredyear-old, two-hundred proof Grace bottle after bottle of pure distillate of Scripture, one sip of which would convince anyone that God saves us single-handedly. The word of the Gospel after all those centuries of trying to lift yourself into heaven by worrying about the perfection of your bootstraps suddenly turned out to be a flat announcement that the saved were home before they started...grace has to be drunk straight: no water, no ice, and certainly no ginger ale; neither goodness, nor badness, not the flowers that bloom in the spring of super spirituality could be allowed to enter into the case. - Robert Farrar Capon, Between Noon & Three: Romance, Law & the Outrage of Grace We can think of our inadequacies as terrible defects, if we want, and hate ourselves. But we can also think of them affirmatively, as doorways through which the power of grace can enter our lives. - Gerald May, Addiction and Grace

Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. Please silence all mobile phones and electronic devices for the duration of the worship service. Text in bold italics is read together by the entire congregation. Plain text is read by one of the worship service leaders. Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker! For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. Amen! 1

For The Beauty Of The Earth Folliot S. Pierpoint 1864, Conrard Kocher 1838 For the beauty of the earth For the glory of the skies, For the love which from our birth Over and around us lies. Refrain Lord of all, to Thee we raise, This our hymn of grateful praise. For the beauty of each hour, Of the day and of the night, Hill and vale, and tree and flower, Sun and moon, and stars of Refrain For the joy of human love, Brother, sister, parent, child, Friends on earth and friends above, For all gentle thoughts and mild. Refrain For Thy Church, that evermore Lifteth holy hands above, Offering up on every shore Her pure sacrifice of love. Refrain S E A T E D Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been the practice of the church for thousands of years to have portions of the bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God s word. LECTIO SACRA Luke 18:9-14 He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt: Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get. But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, God, be merciful to me, a sinner! I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted. The word of the Lord! Thanks be to God! O R D E R O F W O R S H I P 2

INTERLUDE Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection and worship. S T A N D I N G CONFESSION OF SIN Adapted from Psalm 38 O LORD, rebuke us not in your anger, nor discipline us in your wrath! For your arrows have sunk into us, and your hand has come down on us. There is no soundness in our flesh because of your indignation; there is no health in our bones because of our sin. For our iniquities have gone over our heads; like a heavy burden, they are too heavy for us. Confession of sin happens within the context of relationship, both with God and each other. We confess together, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ. Do not forsake us, O Lord! Our God, be not far from us! Make haste to help us, O Lord, our salvation! (You are invited to confess your sins silently.) RECEIVING OF GRACE Adapted from I John 1 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Amen! 3

PRAYING THE PSALMS Psalm 38:9-22 O Lord, all my longing is before you; my sighing is not hidden from you. My heart throbs; my strength fails me, and the light of my eyes it also has gone from me. My friends and companions stand aloof from my plague, and my nearest kin stand far off. Praying through the Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using the prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, there will be pauses for reflection. Those who seek my life lay their snares; those who seek my hurt speak of ruin and meditate treachery all day long. But I am like a deaf man; I do not hear, like a mute man who does not open his mouth. I have become like a man who does not hear, and in whose mouth are no rebukes. But for you, O LORD, do I wait; it is you, O Lord my God, who will answer. For I said, Only let them not rejoice over me, who boast against me when my foot slips! For I am ready to fall, and my pain is ever before me. I confess my iniquity; I am sorry for my sin. But my foes are vigorous, they are mighty, and many are those who hate me wrongfully. Those who render me evil for good accuse me because I follow after good. Do not forsake me, O LORD! O my God, be not far from me! Make haste to help me, O Lord, my salvation! 5

Prayer for Those Searching for the Truth Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen. Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the author and perfecter of my faith. Amen. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen. Sermon activities for kids resumes September 21. 11 S T A N D I N G AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Q. What do you believe about the forgiveness of sins? A. I believe that God, because of Christ's satisfaction, will no more remember my sins, nor my sinful nature, against which I have to struggle all my life, but will graciously grant me the righteousness of Christ, that I may never come into condemnation. Heidelberg Catechism The Heidelberg Catechism is the best known of the Reformed confessions. It was written in Heidelberg, Germany in 1563 by two young ministers. 12 Prayer for Receiving Communion Lord Jesus, your perfect life, death, and resurrection are the source of all blessing in this life and the life to come. As I eat this bread and drink this cup, renew me in the joy and glory of knowing and serving you. I come to this table on the basis of your merit only and not my own. As you have completely and fully offered yourself for me, I now completely and fully offer myself to you as a living sacrifice. Amen. Allergen-free communion elements (wafer ingredients: organic brown rice flour, organic white rice flour) are available at the center of the communion table. To partake, please dip in either the wine (taller cup) or grape juice (shorter cup) on the table, then proceed through the line. THE SACRAMENT OF COMMUNION Communion, also called the Lord s Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal of Christians. We invite all baptized followers of Jesus Christ who acknowledge their sins against God and their neighbors and confess their need for the grace of Christ to partake of this meal. If you are a Christian and haven t been baptized, please talk with one of our pastors. We would be honored to baptize you. We hope that this time is helpful to you as you consider your relationship with Jesus Christ and with his people, the church. Gloria Patri, 2nd cent. [14] I have become like a man who does not hear, and in whose mouth are no rebukes. 400 E Pine St, Suite 215 Seattle, WA graceseattle.org STAFF Rev. John Haralson, Pastor (john@graceseattle.org) Rev.
