SUNDAY SCHEDULE 1300 E Aloha St Worship Service 10:00 am WORSHIP SERVICE Nursery 6 months 2 years Grace Kids 2s: Room 117 3s: Fellowship H (FH) 4s/5s (PreK): Room 119 SUMMER 2018 My God, Bones what have I done? These are iconic words of Captain James Tiberias Kirk from movie Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, after Captain Kirk did unthinkable for fans of science fiction TV show and franchise Star Trek he destroyed USS Enterprise which was symbol of inspiration, home and optimism for characters and viewers of beloved program. Destroying Enterprise was like eating cornflakes without milk, or having cheese with no bread or wine; you just can t have Kirk, Spock and Bones without Enterprise! For those of us unfamiliar with pop culture references and shows like Star Trek, I am sure you can resonate with tragedy and heartbreak of being displaced from home, of being disillusioned when once inspired, and pessimistic where re was once optimism. To help guide us on our life s journey, stripped of our normal leadership as a church, we are taking a break from our annual summer survey of Psalms and spending some time with remnant of believers in Old Testament who were stripped of ir normal leadership and displaced from ir own Enterprise, Temple of Living God. This Summer, Grace will focus on books of Haggai and Zechariah that speak to a people who are ced to rebuild Temple that was a symbol of inspiration to nations, home to God and his covenant people, and a sign of optimism that one day world would be made right again. After Kirk heartbreakingly stares at Enterprise burning up in atmosphere and asks, What have I done?, Bones replies, What you had to do, what you always do. Turn death into a fighting chance to live.. In Scripture, God owed destruction of Temple in response to our sin, but through that death His people were reborn. In Christ, His Body, or Temple, (John 2: 19), was destroyed so that in his death we might live. This Summer as we read and reflect, may words of Haggai and Zechariah inspire us towards true faith and obedience. Unless orwise noted, Scripture quotations are from The Holy Bible, English Standard Version (ESV ), copyright 2001 by Crossway, a publishing ministry of Good News Publishers. Used by permission. 3 REFLECTION QUOTES Then you will say in your heart: Who has borne me se? I was bereaved and barren, exiled and put away, but who has brought up se? Behold, I was left alone; from where have se come? Isaiah 49:21 (NIV) Sing, barren woman, you who never bore a child; burst into song, shout for joy, you who were never in labor; because more are children of desolate woman than of her who has a husband, says Lord. Enlarge place of your tent, stretch your tent curtains wide, do not hold back; lengn your cords, strengn your stakes. For you will spread out to right and to left; your descendants will dispossess nations and settle in ir desolate cities. Isaiah 54:13 (NIV) Let no foreigner who is bound to Lord say, The Lord will surely exclude me from his people. And let no eunuch complain, I am only a dry tree. The Sovereign Lord declares he who gars exiles of Israel: I will gar still ors to m besides those already gared. Isaiah 56:3,8 (NIV)

Please silence mobile phones and electronic devices for duration of worship service. Text in bold is read toger by entire congregation. Plain text is read by one of worship service leaders The sm symbols you will see throughout se pages correspond to a "Key to Liturgy" that you can pick up in lobby to engage children in elements of our worship service. Our worship begins each week with a c to worship. We are gared here today because God, our Creator, desires to have a relationship with us. Wher we realize it or not, he is one cing us to himself today and every day. SEVENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST WELCOME CALL TO WORSHIP Adapted from Psalm 76 In Judah God is known; his name is great in Israel. His abode has been established in Salem, his dwelling place in Zion. There he broke flashing arrows, shield, sword, and weapons of war. Glorious are you, more majestic than mountains full of prey. The stouarted were stripped of ir spoil; y sank into sleep; men of war were unable to use ir hands. At your rebuke, O God of Jacob, both rider and horse lay stunned. But you, you are to be feared! Who can stand before you when once your anger is roused? From heavens you uttered judgment; earth feared and was still, when God arose to establish judgment, to save humble of earth. 6 LECTIO SACRA Revelation 21:915; 2227 Seated Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been practice of church for thousands of years to have portions of bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by of God s word. Then came one of seven angels who had seven bowls full of seven last plagues and spoke to me, saying, Come, I will show you Bride, wife of Lamb. And he carried me away in Spirit to a great, high mountain, and showed me holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, having glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. It had a great, high w, with twelve gates, and at gates twelve angels, and on gates names of twelve tribes of sons of Israel were inscribed on east three gates, on north three gates, on south three gates, and on west three gates. And w of city had twelve foundations, and on m were twelve names of twelve apostles of Lamb. And one who spoke with me had a measuring rod of gold to measure city and its gates and ws. And I saw no temple in city, for its temple is Lord God Almighty and Lamb. And city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is Lamb. By its light will nations walk, and kings of earth will bring ir glory into it, and its gates will never be shut by day and re will be no night re. They will bring into it glory and honor of nations. But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in Lamb's book of life. This is Word of Lord. Thanks be to God! INTERLUDE CONFESSION OF SIN Isaiah 64 Standing Confession of sin happens within context of relationship, both with God and each or. We confess toger, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ. Oh that you would rend heavens and come down, that mountains might quake at your presence as when fire kindles brushwood and fire causes water to boil to make your name known to your adversaries, and that nations might tremble at your presence! When you did awesome things that we did not look for, you came down, mountains quaked at your presence. (Continued on next page.) 3

From of old no one has heard or perceived by ear, no eye has seen a God besides you, who acts for those who wait for him. You meet him who joyfully works righteousness, those who remember you in your ways. Behold, you were angry, and we sinned; in our sins we have been a long time, and sh we be saved? We have become like one who is unclean, and our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment. We fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like wind, take us away. There is no one who cs upon your name, who rouses himself to take hold of you; for you have hidden your face from us, and have made us melt in hand of our iniquities. But now, O Lord, you are our Far; we are clay, and you are our potter; we are work of your hand. Be not so terribly angry, O Lord, and remember not iniquity forever. Behold, please look, we are your people. Your holy cities have become a wilderness; Zion has become a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation. Our holy and beautiful house, where our fars praised you, has been burned by fire, and our pleasant places have become ruins. Will you restrain yourself at se things, O Lord? Will you keep silent, and afflict us so terribly? (You are invited to confess your sins silently.) 4

RECEIVING OF GRACE Adapted from Isaiah 42:1017 Take heart brors and sisters, Lord says in his Word, that he will not restrain his mercies from us. Hear and believe se words that promise light for us when we find ourselves in darkness: The Lord goes out like a mighty man, like a man of war he stirs up his zeal; he cries out, he shouts aloud, he shows himself mighty against his foes. For a long time I have held my peace; I have kept still and restrained myself; now I will cry out like a woman in labor; I will gasp and pant. I will lay waste mountains and hills, and dry up ir vegetation; I will turn rivers into islands, and dry up pools. And I will lead blind in a way that y do not know, in paths that y have not known I will guide m. I will turn darkness before m into light, rough places into level ground. These are things I do, and I do not forsake m. In Christ, we are forgiven and brought back home! This is Gospel! May peace of Christ be with you! And also with you! 5

PRAYING THE PSALMS Psalm 59 Praying through Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, re will be pauses for reflection. Deliver me from my enemies, O my God; protect me from those who rise up against me; deliver me from those who work evil, and save me from bloodthirsty men. For behold, y lie in wait for my life; fierce men stir up strife against me. For no transgression or sin of mine, O Lord, for no fault of mine, y run and make ready. Awake, come to meet me, and see! You, Lord God of hosts, are God of Israel. Rouse yourself to punish nations; spare none of those who treacherously plot evil. Each evening y come back, howling like dogs and prowling about city. There y are, bellowing with ir mouths with swords in ir lips for Who, y think, will hear us? But you, O Lord, laugh at m; you hold nations in derision. O my Strength, I will watch for you, for you, O God, are my fortress. My God in his steadfast love will meet me; God will let me look in triumph on my enemies. Kill m not, lest my people forget; make m totter by your power and bring m down, O Lord, our shield! For sin of ir mouths, words of ir lips, let m be trapped in ir pride. For cursing and lies that y utter, consume m in wrath; consume m till y are no more, that y may know that God rules over Jacob to ends of earth. 7 Each evening y come back, howling like dogs and prowling about city. They wander about for food and growl if y do not get ir fill. But I will sing of your strength; I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in morning. For you have been to me a fortress and a refuge in day of my distress. O my Strength, I will sing praises to you, for you, O God, are my fortress, God who shows me steadfast love.

We lift m up to Lord. Let us give thanks to Lord our God. It is meet and right to do so. The Sursum Corda (Latin: Lift up your hearts ) is an opening dialogue in Eucharistic liturgy of Christian Church and dates back (at least) to third century. This text encourages church to come with thankfulness and joy to Lord s table. It is right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Far Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim glory of your Name: 11

SERMON TEXT Zechariah 2 [1] And I lifted my eyes and saw, and behold, a man with a measuring line in his hand! [2] Then I said, Where are you going? And he said to me, To measure Jerusalem, to see what is its width and what is its length. [3] And behold, angel who talked with me came forward, and anor angel came forward to meet him [4] and said to him, Run, say to that young man, Jerusalem sh be inhabited as villages without ws, because of multitude of people and livestock in it. [5] And I will be to her a w of fire around, declares Lord, and I will be glory in her midst. [6] Up! Up! Flee from land of north, declares Lord. For I have spread you abroad as four winds of heavens, declares Lord. [7] Up! Escape to Zion, you who dwell with daughter of Babylon. [8] For thus said Lord of hosts, after his glory sent me to nations who plundered you, for he who touches you touches apple of his eye: [9] Behold, I will shake my hand over m, and y sh become plunder for those who served m. Then you will know that Lord of hosts has sent me. [10] Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion, for behold, I come and I will dwell in your midst, declares Lord. [11] And many nations sh join mselves to Lord in that day, and sh be my people. And I will dwell in your midst, and you sh know that Lord of hosts has sent me to you. [12] And Lord will inherit Judah as his portion in holy land, and will again choose Jerusalem. [13] Be silent, flesh, before Lord, for he has roused himself from his holy dwelling. 16
