2 WORSHIP SERVICE Sundays 1300 E Aloha St 9:00 AM Nursery 6 months 2 years Grace Kids 2s: Room 117 3s: Fellowship Hall (FH) s/5s (PreK): Room 119 THE WAY OF PEACE: ADVENT 2016 Because of tender mercy of our God, whereby sunrise shall visit us from on high to give light to those who sit in darkness in shadow of death, to guide our feet into way of peace. Luke 1:7879 Dear Friends, Peace is an often misunderstood word. By peace, we can sometimes mean absence of conflict. When a war ends, nations sign a peace treaty. Similarly, when we are stressed out, we long for some peace quiet, by this we mean an absence of turmoil or tension. By peace, we can also mean something (or someone) that brings us happiness. At peace can describe how we feel after we have eaten a really great meal or finished an excellent novel. But, in Bible, peace is much deeper, richer far more complex. Peace describes a rich fertile situation where all relationships are flourishing in way God intended m to be. When Bible uses concept peace, it means many things happening at once: People in right relationship with God, ir Creator Savior, People in right relationship with mselves, People in right relationship with one anor, People in right relationship with creation. Finding path to peace is so often hard to do. Our culture is constantly offering to us lifestyles choices that promise peace, but in reality can never deliver on those promises. And, because of our own uncertainty, pride, shame, we can often be easily led astray in our search for peace. This year during Advent* Christmas, we are going to be looking at texts from Old Testament prophet Isaiah. God spoke through Isaiah giving Israel, ancient people of God, ultimately us his promises of peace. God desires for us to walk in his ways of peace, shows us way to peace requires us to draw near to him. So, don t give into temptation towards selfprotective cynicism or mindless holiday distraction. This Advent season, let us come to Lord ask him to show us way. Let us worship! (*For those new to church calendar, Advent is weeks immediately preceding Christmas Day. It is a time when we look back to Jesus first coming over 2,000 years ago to begin his reign of peace. It is also a time for us to look forward to his return, when he will consummate his kingdom of peace here on earth.)

3 REFLECTION QUOTES The gospel of selffulfillment has been centuries in making. As Charles Taylor explains in his dense, scholarly A Secular Age, new invention of modern age is a selfsufficing humanism that accept[s] no final goals beyond human flourishing, nor any allegiance to anything else beyond this flourishing. Of no previous society was this true. In or words, happiness is our only duty today, selfbetrayal our only sin. It s not simply that lines of morality have blurred in modern times, making truth relative. It s not even that religious belief has waned. Rar, good life has been radically redefined according to benefit of individual while former measures of flourishing God s glory, society s health, family s wellbeing have been displaced. We re all on throne now. I am writing to remind us, as Taylor astutely does, of sometimes irreducible gap between thy will be done let humans flourish. God wills human flourishing, for sure. But that doesn t mean he values our momentary happiness above everything else. Indeed, Christian story is not just one of flourishing but renunciation. We deny ourselves to follow Jesus. We deny ourselves to serve our neighbor. And while holiness does surely reap happiness (in next life if not this one), we must recognize moments today when it becomes necessary to forgo our flourishing as an act, not just of obedience, but of repairing world (Taylor again). This is only way to make sense of Cross both one Jesus bore one we ourselves take up. This is story of desire as gospel tells it. Jen Pollock Michel For what am I to myself without You, but a guide to my own downfall... Let, n, strong mighty laugh at us, but let us who are poor needy confess unto You. Augustine, Confessions (AD 397) Your word is a lamp to my feet a light to my path. King David, Psalm 119:105 Unless orwise noted, all Scripture quotations are from The Holy Bible, English Stard Version (ESV ), copyright 2001 by Crossway, a publishing ministry of Good News Publishers. 4 FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT Please silence all mobile phones electronic devices for duration of worship service. CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 132:1318 Sting Text in bold is read toger by entire congregation. Plain text is read by one of worship service leaders The small symbols you will see throughout se pages correspond to a "Key to Liturgy" that you can pick up in lobby to engage children in elements of our worship service. Our worship begins each week with a call to worship. We are gared here today because God, our Creator, desires to have a relationship with us. Wher we realize it or not, he is one calling us to himself today every day. by John Mason Neale For LORD has chosen Zion; he has desired it for his dwelling place [saying]: 'This is my resting place forever; here I will dwell, for I have desired it. I will abundantly bless her provisions; I will satisfy her poor with bread. Her priests I will clo with salvation, her saints will shout for joy. There I will make a horn to sprout for David; I have prepared a lamp for my anointed. His enemies I will clo with shame, but on him his crown will shine.' 5 LECTIO SACRA Matw 2:36 (NIV) Seated But about that day or hour no one knows, not even angels in heaven, nor Son, but only Far. As it was in days of Noah, so it will be at coming of Son of Man. For in days before flood, people were eating drinking, marrying giving in marriage, up to day Noah entered ark; y knew nothing about what would happen until flood came took m all away. That is how it will be at coming of Son of Man. Two men will be in field; one will be taken or left. Two women will be grinding with a h mill; one will be taken or left. Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been practice of church for thouss of years to have portions of bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God s word. Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. But underst this: If owner of house had known at what time of night thief was coming, he would have kept watch would not have let his house be broken into. So you also must be ready, because Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him. Romans 13:111 (NIV) And do this, understing present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is nearly over; day is almost here. So let us put aside deeds of darkness put on armor of light. Let us behave decently, as in daytime, not in carousing drunkenness, not in sexual immorality debauchery, not in dissension jealousy. Rar, clo yourselves with Lord Jesus Christ, do not think about how to gratify desires of flesh. This is Word of Lord. Thanks be to God! INTERLUDE Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection worship. 2

6 CONFESSION OF SIN Sting Confession of sin happens within context of relationship, both with God each or. We confess toger, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy celebrates its abundance in Christ. Holy God reconciling King, As a far has compassion on his children, so You have compassion on those who fear You; for You know how we are formed, remember that we are dust. Forgive our sins. They are many. Where we have not loved our neighbors; where we have been silent indifferent to violence, injustice, racism human suffering; where we have failed to see Jesus in those in need, be merciful forgive. Where we have not lived with loving selfcontrol. Instead of walking difficult path of loving selfdenial for your sake for sake of those close to us, forgive us for how we have embraced sinful selfindulgence with our bodies, our possessions, our time, Forgive us heal us, O Lord. (You are invited to confess your sins silently) RECEIVING OF GRACE 1 John 1:89 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, God is faithful just to forgive us our sins to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. May peace of Christ be with you! And also with you! 3

8 PRAYING THE PSALMS Psalm 122 Sting Praying through Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, re will be pauses for reflection. I was glad when y said to me, Let us go to house of LORD! Our feet have been sting within your gates, O Jerusalem! Jerusalem built as a city that is bound firmly toger, to which tribes go up, tribes of LORD, as was decreed for Israel, to give thanks to name of LORD. There thrones for judgment were set, thrones of house of David. Pray for peace of Jerusalem! May y be secure who love you! Peace be within your walls security within your towers! For my brors companions' sake I will say, Peace be within you! For sake of house of LORD our God, I will seek your good. 5 lyrics: Johannes G.
