1 ORDER OF WORSHIP Sunday, September 27, :00 AM & 11:30 AM

2 GRACE CHURCH SEATTLE Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before LORD, our Maker! Psalm 95:6 No matter who you are a committed follower of Jesus, a person curious about Christianity, or a skeptic of spirituality God is calling you to worship him. Wherever you are on journey, we hope that you feel welcomed and at home. Perhaps you have never been to church (or not in a long time) and fear that you will not know what to do, how to act, or what to say. Be assured: God s grace is for people just like you. In our congregation, we follow an ancient liturgical pattern in our worship, drawing from wisdom of Christians who have gone before us. Every Sunday we renew our commitment to God, offer him our prayers and gifts, confess our sins, receive forgiveness, hear from God s word, and celebrate Lord s Supper toger. We find worshipping this way liberates us from our culture's obsession with that which is novel. We have also found worshipping this way to be deeply and profoundly formative over time. If you are not used to worship, or not used to worshipping in this manner, give yourself some time to get acclimated. We also make every effort to explain things as we go along. Although we are committed to worshiping in this manner, we realize that danger of liturgical worship is that it can become an empty ritual. We understand that, at its heart, worship is profoundly relational. It encompasses both our relationship with God and our relationship with one anor. Every week we gar to meet with God, strengn our ties to one anor, and welcome strangers into our congregation. For se reasons, although our worship is structured and informed by ancient practices, we also strive for it to be warm and personal. In all of this, our great confidence is that God enjoys meeting with us. Let us worship! 3 FOR REFLECTION To wait openendedly is an enormously radical attitude toward life. So is to trust that something will happen to us that is far beyond our own imaginings. So, too, is giving up control over our future and letting God define our life, trusting that God molds us according to God s love and not according to our fear. The spiritual life is a life in which we wait, actively present to moment, trusting that new things will happen to us, new things that are far beyond our own imaginations, fantasy, or prediction. That, indeed, is a very radical stance toward life in a world preoccupied with control. Henri Nouwen What would it take to become genuinely rebellious? Remember: rebellion only counts if it makes you queasy if it makes you say, 'that looks too hard to do' if it frightens you rar than seduces and flatters you. Would you burn churches? Not shop for a year? Chop down telephone poles? Abandon your family? Buy difficult art? Move to Africa? Test experimental vaccines? How rebellious are you? What would you do? Would you give up sex? Would you remain silent for ten years? Would you study some obscure subject that couldn't possibly lead to a job? Would you be willing to leave a comfortable life to beg for food while you dream of ways to crash system? What would you do? Shopping doesn't count. It never did. It's a hoax. A mirage. Let go of it. What would you do? We're entering a human epoch of unprecedented standardized behaviors and emotions and irony is that we all think we're magically different. We need rebellion. Are you ready for it? Doug Coupland Everything that creatures have, including our very existence, is a gift of sheer grace, an overflow of selfgiving love that is God's eternal character. In Genesis, God ends His creative work by setting a table for people. Peter Leithart, Blessed Are Hungry The context of love is world. Wendell Berry

He gives power to faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. 5 LECTIO SACRA Deuteronomy 15:111 At end of every seven years you shall grant a release. And this is manner of release: every creditor shall release what he has lent to his neighbor. He shall not exact it of his neighbor, his bror, because LORD's release has been proclaimed. Of a foreigner you may exact it, but whatever of yours is with your bror your hand shall release. But re will be no poor among you; for LORD will bless you in land that LORD your God is giving you for an inheritance to possess if only you will strictly obey voice of LORD your God, being careful to do all this commandment that I command you today. For LORD your God will bless you, as he promised you, and you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow, and you shall rule over many nations, but y shall not rule over you. Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been practice of church for thousands of years to have portions of bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God s word. If among you, one of your brors should become poor, in any of your towns within your land that LORD your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart or shut your hand against your poor bror, but you shall open your hand to him and lend him sufficient for his need, whatever it may be. Take care lest re be an unworthy thought in your heart and you say, The seventh year, year of release is near, and your eye look grudgingly on your poor bror, and you give him nothing, and he cry to LORD against you, and you be guilty of sin. You shall give to him freely, and your heart shall not be grudging when you give to him, because for this LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in all that you undertake. For re will never cease to be poor in land. Therefore I command you, You shall open wide your hand to your bror, to needy and to poor, in your land. The word of Lord! Thanks be to God! INTERLUDE Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection and worship. O R D E R O F W O R S H I P 2

6 S T A N D I N G Confession of sin happens within context of relationship, both with God and each or. We confess toger, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ. CONFESSION OF SIN Almighty and Merciful Far, you have told us to do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with you. Our lives, however, often do not measure up. We have not acted justly. Instead, we have acted in ways that promote our own comfort and advancement. We have not loved mercy. Instead, we have loved order and control over our lives that we can maintain if we do not serve those in need. We have not walked humbly with you. Instead, we have run from your paths when y are difficult and involve sacrifice. Forgive us for our sins against you and our neighbors. By power of your Spirit make us a congregation who acts justly, loves mercy, and walks humbly with you, through Christ our Lord. (You are invited to confess your sins silently.) RECEIVING OF GRACE Adapted from Ephesian 2:810 For by grace we have been saved through faith. And this is not our own doing; it is gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in m. In Christ, we are forgiven. Be at peace and live with great freedom! Amen. As we pray, re will be pauses for reflection.

8 Prayer for Those Searching for Truth Jesus, you claim to be way, truth, and life. Grant that I might be undaunted by cost of following you as I consider reasons for doing so. Amen. Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you fulfillment of all my need and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, true and living bread. 16 SERMON TEXT [25] And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to test, saying, Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? [26] He said to him, What is written in Law? How do you read it? [27] And he answered, You shall love Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself. [28] And he said to him, You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live. [29] But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, And who is my neighbor? [30] Jesus replied, A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. [31] Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on or side. [32] So likewise a Levite, when he came to place and saw him, passed by on or side. [33] But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion. [34] He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. [35] And next day he took out two denarii and gave m to innkeeper, saying, Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back. [36] Which of se three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to man who fell among robbers? [37] He said, The one who showed him mercy. And Jesus said to him, You go, and do likewise.
