1 ORDER OF WORSHIP Sunday, May 31, :00 am 11:30 am graceseattle.org

2 LEVITICUS: HOLY GOD, HOLY PEOPLE "Full humanity is humanity united to God, in communion with God." J. Todd Billings, Union with Christ Jewish children used to begin ir synagogue education by studying book of Leviticus. For many of us, this seems unimaginable possibly even unkind. Of all places in Bible to start, why in world would you begin with Leviticus? In fact, Leviticus seems like it should be last place in Bible we should turn. One shrewd observer wryly pointed out that, "Leviticus often becomes that graveyard where readthroughbibleinayear plans go to die." Truth be told, Leviticus is often tedious cumbersome. It reads more like an instruction manual than a novel. Furrmore, Leviticus is seemingly irrelevant to our lives. What good does it do us to know about outdated religious practices, arcane rituals related to skin diseases, wher or not we should eat shellfish? Surely re are better ways to spend our intellectual spiritual energies. But, we neglect Leviticus to our peril. As we will see, burden of book is relational. Leviticus lays out a blueprint that gives us shape texture of what our lives look like when lived out in union with God. One of most significant statements in Leviticus is this one: You shall be holy to me, for I Lord am holy have separated you from peoples, that you should be mine. (Leviticus 20:26) This speaks of God's holiness, which is anor way of speaking about how God is different than us or "set apart" from us. How are we to be joined to this God who is so fundamentally "or"? And, once we are in relationship with him, how do we live out this union express our love loyalty to God? In or words, how do we begin to reflect his holiness into world? These are main concerns of this rich book. Finally, it is important to know that Leviticus is a blueprint. As a blueprint, it is not finished product. As we shall see throughout book, beautiful image silhouetted in Leviticus is fulfilled through person work of Jesus Christ. We are now being invited to live into Christfulfilled reality of pencil sketches we find in Leviticus. Let us worship! 3 FOR REFLECTION The Gospel is not religion or irreligion. It s not morality or immorality. It s a radically different approach. The moralistic grid divides world into good people bad people. The good are in bad are out. And relativistic grid divides world into openminded people bigots. The openminded people are in bigots are out. But Gospel divides world into humble proud. It says humble are in proud are out. The Gospel says, those who think y re good are out those who know y re not are in. That is not something in middle, that s something utterly different. Tim Keller It is surely more than coincidental that trumpet blast announcing Jubilee (in Leviticus 25) sounded forth on day of Atonement. Reconciliation with God is precondition for reconciliation with brors sisters. Conversely, genuine reconciliation with God leads inevitably to a transformation of all or relationships. Ron Sider, Rich Christians in an Age of Hunger: Moving from Affluence to Generosity Despite challenges presented by widespread trivialization dilution of Christian gospel, I remain committed to its fundamental claim: To follow Jesus is to love your way through darkness of world. Cornel West, Prophetic Christian Thought

6 Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been practice of church for thouss of years to have portions of bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God s word. LECTIO SACRA John 17:1826 As you sent me into world, so I have sent m into world. And for ir sake I consecrate myself, that y also may be sanctified in truth. I do not ask for se only, but also for those who will believe in me through ir word, that y may all be one, just as you, Far, are in me, I in you, that y also may be in us, so that world may believe that you have sent me. The glory that you have given me I have given to m, that y may be one even as we are one, I in m you in me, that y may become perfectly one, so that world may know that you sent me loved m even as you loved me. Far, I desire that y also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before foundation of world. O righteous Far, even though world does not know you, I know you, se know that you have sent me. I made known to m your name, I will continue to make it known, that love with which you have loved me may be in m, I in m. The word of Lord! Thanks be to God! Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection worship. INTERLUDE O R D E R O F W O R S H I P 2

7 S T A N D I N G CONFESSION OF SIN Far, you have come to meet us as we return to you: Lord, have mercy. Jesus, you died on cross for our sins. Christ, have mercy. Spirit, you give us life peace. Lord, have mercy. Confession of sin happens within context of relationship, both with God each or. We confess toger, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy celebrates its abundance in Christ. (You are invited to confess your sins silently.) RECEIVING OF GRACE Brors sisters, hear good news! We did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but we have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, Abba! Far! it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God. And since we are children, we are also heirs, heirs of God joint heirs with Christ. May peace of Christ be with you! And also with you! O R D E R O F W O R S H I P 3

20 S E R M O N T E X T [8] You shall count seven weeks of years, seven times seven years, so that time of seven weeks of years shall give you fortynine years. [9] Then you shall sound loud trumpet on tenth day of seventh month. On Day of Atonement you shall sound trumpet throughout all your l. [10] And you shall consecrate fiftieth year, proclaim liberty throughout l to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you, when each of you shall return to his property each of you shall return to his clan. [11] That fiftieth year shall be a jubilee for you; in it you shall neir sow nor reap what grows of itself nor gar grapes from undressed vines. [12] For it is a jubilee. It shall be holy to you. You may eat produce of field. [13] In this year of jubilee each of you shall return to his property. [14] And if you make a sale to your neighbor or buy from your neighbor, you shall not wrong one anor. [15] You shall pay your neighbor according to number of years after jubilee, he shall sell to you according to number of years for crops. [16] If years are many, you shall increase price, if years are few, you shall reduce price, for it is number of crops that he is selling to you. [17] You shall not wrong one anor, but you shall fear your God, for I am LORD your God. Leviticus 25:817 [16] And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to synagogue on Sabbath day, he stood up to read. [17] And scroll of prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled scroll found place where it was written, [18] The Spirit of Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives recovering of sight to blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, [19] to proclaim year of Lord's favor. [20] And he rolled up scroll gave it back to attendant sat down. And eyes of all in synagogue were fixed on him. [21] And he began to say to m, Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing. Luke 4:1621 [1] The Spirit of Lord GOD is upon me, because LORD has anointed me to bring good news to poor; he has sent me to bind up brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to captives, opening of prison to those who are bound; [2] to proclaim year of LORD's favor, day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; [3] to grant to those who mourn in Zion to give m a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, oil of gladness instead of mourning, garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that y may be called oaks of righteousness, planting of LORD, that he may be glorified. [4] They shall build up ancient ruins; y shall raise up former devastations; y shall repair ruined cities, devastations of many generations.
